#fears and hopes for Tekken 8

On this 2024/01/25 I figured I should take a moment and articulate my thoughts and feelings coming into Tekken 8 later tonight. I can see a world in which Tekken 8, despite doing it all right, repeats history like T4. But to start with the optimism. The arcades look wonderful, I had so much fun trying it in the Demo, and I look forwards to seeing if the game manages to help players come from button mashing-> thinking about their neutral -> using all 3 dimensions available. Or at least more use of the plane. -> More player choice here. But ultimately the game still needs to teach combos and frame traps and setups to their players. But these... Are complex concepts to understand, or are mechanically demanding tasks that require practice and development. In this regard the training arena at least looks incredibly promising. Learning how you lost in Tekken 8, and what might have been possible combined with their replay system revamp. I saw what this did in Starcraft 2, and short of being able to recontrol the game with 2 players, it is incredibly similar. The game of course, looks and feels amazing, smooth fluid Tekken gameplay all the way down, but of course this is the part of the game that BNE has established in the early 00's. But this is where I get into my fears. Heat and chip. Playing some of the demo, and to clarify I do not mean the crack (my raven ass has been playing Kazuya I can show the ghost.) Heat is amazing. It has minor elements of bursts re guilty gear, but they remind me more of reversal guards from Soul calibur 6 after some time recently replaying that. And in that comparison really does draw some alarm, especially considering they were not that well received there either. However my fear is not with the heat engagement so much, I think heat will prove to be much more invaluable in combos. I know in the CBT with Raven using 3+2 to get an extra tornado inbetween something akin to fF3 fF4 tornado and a 41bt4 or b242 can lead to insane wall carry and damage. With Kazuya changing my combo from df3 df1DF2 and adding in heat burst to fF2f allowed me to still throw in whichever ender I wanted. This meant that a launch near half could result in a death between the added damage, wall carry and potential wall combo/oki. This combined with the impact of chip are my two main concenrs. As it stands there are 3 major chip categories I have seen from my play and the community. First is the non-existant impact. A game where the chip damage never matters, it plays out with little impact because either 50/50's are hitting, the recoverable health is not being capitalized on, or your landing mostly clean hits instead of combos or counters and it has little impact. Secondly while I did not play the CNT, the utility of oppressive moves, with crazy on hit 50/50's with lots of chip made their MU's incredibly difficult and forced more movement. While I like Tekken because of it's movement, these matchups were toxic in their forcing your hand to fear a tactic that already gave you disadvantage. However the interest in chip has hit, there have been games I have had where we both get low, with recoverable health, and the battle becomes much tighter because of it. But I feel like this is more of an issue with casual Tekken anyways. Where players do not want to do slow things because they are less flashy. I think Tekken 8 has the promise to really help players who want to learn and ge elbow deep into the meat of Tekken do this. I think the fear however is that getting elbow deep into Tekken is a death knell for the game that requires it.

What are your thoughts on the new Tekken character Reina?
Incredibly underwhelmed.
She's about what I expected, another anime face highschool girl.
I like her attitude. I like some of her move design, I like some of her animations where she's arrogant. The rest baffles me. If she's meant to be a Mishima, where is her wacky hair, her eyebrows for days? Why can't she be jacked? Why does she need to be another schoolgirl? She looks so generic with her purple hair and cartwheel kicks.
I hope they do something absolutely enchanting with her personality in Tekken 8 story because the appearance reveal is deeply underwhelming. So many choices for Heihachi's successor and they went with the most boring option. Right now, I do not care about her at all. I hope some miracle occurs and they pull some stunning character drama out the bag, because so far she's everything I feared she'd be when I first heard about the leak.

My biggest fear for the story of Tekken 8
I'm scared that the developers are going to do the typical forgive-and-forget trope and have Jun explain that she talked with Heihachi in the past and the whole thing was a misunderstanding by Kazuya.
This can go one of two ways:
A) Kazuya sees the error of his ways and tries to start over with his family and Jun turns into a DBZ housewife and gets written out of the series (again). Tekken will still continue but Kazuya is a good guy now and Devil will probably manifest as it's own being and try to destroy the world leading to a family team-up.
Or B) Kazuya is still evil and kills Jun at the thought of her defending Heihachi while Tekken still continues with this family feud.
I want to be clear: I'm only making these guesses based on my experience as a veteran enjoyer of Japanese culture and media. I'm genuinely impressed that they brought Jun back despite being in her 40s (even though she still looks like she's in her 20s) because Japan tends to have an issue with older women but there's still a chance she'll get written out because of this.
If she doesn't die or still comes back for Tekken 9, I'll gladly eat my words. I'm also making this post because a common trope in anime/video games to forgive your enemies even if they did really awful crimes or the redemption arc was rushed.
Again, let's hope I'm proven wrong.

It is bittersweet to me bc although I love Tek5 and it was the game that fully introduced me to the franchise (I had played other previous games before, I think 3, but not as much), it had some hits and misses with the characters as you explained in your post. Also, Jin in Tek7 felt like he was in some sort of transition, he retained his "power is everything" line and then kinda wants to die. He wasn't the main focus in that game, so maybe I can see why that happened? And as you said he also acted a bit like the Jin from 6 in Tag2. We'll see how it goes in 8. We are a few weeks away
Tek5 is def a very, very good game. But it is kinda weak when it comes to characterization, or even story. Jin in Tek7 did have some of his Tek6 intros/outros removed. Such as he no longer has the "Fear of the wrath of God" or the smirking intros, and he also had the "pitiful" outro removed (Probably more I'm not thinking of) It could be possible they kept the other two just because Tek7 was obviously on a low budget, and they might've reused assets / didn't want to have to make too many new in/outros for Jin. (albeit, I think they did make a few new ones for DJ... so that's probably not it)
Because Jin didn't have a big role in the Tek7 story, they probably didn't know exactly what to do with the character. Harada's outlook on Jin felt different than it does now. For example, insisting on Jin being bad (or at the very least, not a hero) because of his actions in Tek6. Also during Tek6, he boasted about what a Brilliant character Jin is and his transition to being the greatest Tekken villain ever in the making (LMAOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!) and during Tek7, Harada seemed more insistent on Jin being a problematic figure. And now with Tek8, they seemed to have backtracked completely. Talking about how yes, war bad, but Jin had Good Intentions. And then referring to Jin as an almost-villain in Tek6 (almost villain? I thought he was grand villain that took 10 years in the making? What about calling him a villain in the Tek6 artbook? They seemed very insistent on Jin being straight up bad before) And all of Jin's villainous traits from Tek6 seem to have been completely removed, as well as characters even referring to him as the mankind's hope.
So because Jin wasn't in a big role, it's possible they didn't know what direction they wanted him in exactly. He was depicted with remorse for his actions, as he wanted Miguel to kill him. But he still had those in/outros. The team already knew that Bad Guy Jin was highly controversial. So, they might've been on a tightrope when writing him in Tek7 - not wanting to lean toward making him Totally Good but also not wanting to lean toward the other side of making him Totally Bad. But now that he's the main protag of Tek8, and the prime focus, they've fallen into the Totally Good side to make him a Good Hero for the story or whatever. I dunno.
ANYWAY. I just hope it goes good. I can't believe we're so close to it now... this blog is probably really gonna explode after it releases lol.

Hype and fear regarding Tekken 8!
I have so many thought right now but I'll try to write them down as coherently as possible:
This trailer looked so good! And apparently it's not a cutscene but actual gameplay!?!
Okay so I'm really hyped right now but I also have one BIG fear for Tekken 8: Are they gonna merge Jin and Devil Jin into one character?!?
Cause I REALLY hope that's not the case! Partially because I main DJ and it'd really suck if I won't be able to play as him anymore but rather have to choose Jin and then transform during the match! I also fear that doing that would limit DJ's movepool as him and Jin would be one character and they'd probably give him a mix of both of their movesets instead of giving them both their own full movesets (these are just my theories though).
But the main reason I don't want this is that I like Devil Jin as his own character and it'd really really suck if they "removed" him from the game by just making him a part of Jin now. I always enjoyed Devil Jin's presence in the games and the role he played, both directly and indirectly. He's been such a huge part of Jin's storyline for so long that it feels kinda anticlimactic if Jin just "got rid" off him so suddenly. Even though DJ wasn't playable from the very beginning, he's still been in every game that Jin's been in and has had a huge role in the story. So for Jin to just be able to control his devil gene all of a sudden just doesn't feel right to me. But I might also be jumping to conclusions here.
Since we don't see Jin fully transform (like Kazuya does when he switches to Devil in the games) I hope that it means that Jin still doesn't have full control, or at least that they're gonna make Devil Jin his own playable character in Tekken 8, I guess it depends on how much of DJ's moveset they're gonna give Jin in his half transformed state (cause it'd be wierd to give him DJ's flying moves with just one wing, on the other half it'd also be wierd to give Jin a lot of DJ's moves and then also add DJ as there'd be two characters with basically the same moveset). But I feel like many people would be upset if they merged the two since their figthing styles are so different from one another.
A good solution imo would be that Jin can't fully transform or he'll still lose control! That would also add some more stakes to his fights, as he still has to be careful not to give in fully to the devil gene.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see but for now at least I'm holding on to the hope that DJ will be his own character in this game!
So while I'm hyped for a new game and the continuation of the story, I'm also anxious to see how they handle Jin and Devil Jin going forward.
#I have so many thoughts on this#and so many mixed feelings#like I'm super hyped for a new game#but I'm also really scared they'll get rid of The Boy#it's so late now I should really go to bed#but I have so many thoughts I doubt I'll be able to sleep anytime soon haha#man this reveal came outta nowhere#like I know we got that teaser with Kaz a while back but I did not expect them to just drop a trailer like this#tekken 8#jin kazama#devil jin

10 Best Fighting Game Movies
https://ift.tt/31CS0wp
Once upon a time, Bruce Lee, Jim Kelly, and John Saxon visited a crime boss’ private island to compete in a fighting tournament and it was awesome. The 1973 movie Enter the Dragon is basically the prototype for the fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. And when those fighting games became popular, they inspired their own movies that either tried to emulate Enter the Dragon or do something completely new.
The ‘90s gave us the cheesy live-action fighting game movies from Hollywood and the animated movies from Japan. There have been several live-action Mortal Kombat movies as well as a few animated ones. There have also been multiple Street Fighter movies, four attempts at Tekken, a trilogy of Fatal Fury films, and more.
Are most of them bad? Yes. But did we pick our 10 favorite fighting game movies anyway? You bet. Here are our picks:
10. ART OF FIGHTING (1993)
Eh…it’s harmless.
The Art of Fighting series is mostly defined by the twist that the first game’s final boss is the main character’s father and the second game’s final boss is a younger incarnation of the villain from Fatal Fury. Take away those aspects and you’re left with a rather lowkey storyline for a fighting game where a teenage girl is kidnapped by a mobster and is rescued by her brother and her boyfriend.
Wait, I said that weird. It’s two different people, I swear! Except in Capcom, where Dan Hibiki is literally both of them merged into one character.
In the 45-minute Art of Fighting movie about Ryo and Robert, who are like chiller and dopier versions of Ryu and Ken, we watch as the duo gets sucked into a plot about stolen diamonds, martial arts criminals, and angry police lieutenants. It doesn’t take itself seriously and it’s a fine, breezy watch.
Ryo’s incorrect hair color kind of irks me, though.
9. STREET FIGHTER ALPHA: THE ANIMATION (1999)
This movie suffers from the same problem as Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture. It features a cast of heroes from a fighting game taking on a villain created for the movie instead of the villains we actually give a shit about. But the movie does also have some brief but awesome cameos (Kim Kaphwan and Geese Howard from Fatal Fury and Dan Hibiki and Akuma from Street Fighter Alpha) to brighten up a less-than-stellar plot.
Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation does at least get by because the original characters play up Ryu’s whole fear about being overcome by “the Dark Hadou.” This leads to some cool animations where Evil Ryu looks like a mindless, shambling zombie but also an unstoppable fighting machine.
The movie’s main storyline is about a kid named Shun who claims that he’s Ryu’s long-lost brother. He too is a fighter cursed with an inner dark side, which is used as a red herring to suggest that Shun’s father (and presumably Ryu’s father) is actually Akuma. That ends up being bupkis and Shun is just linked to some scheme by a mad scientist or whatever.
Probably the funniest thing about this movie is the directors’ infatuation with Chun-Li’s midsection. She’s wearing her form-fitting Street Fighter Alpha costume and there are dozens upon dozens of random close-ups to her lower torso from the front and back. If this were a drinking game, it would kill you.
8. FATAL FURY 2: THE NEW BATTLE (1993)
Of the Fatal Fury movie trilogy, this one is easily the best, even if it makes all the good guys seem like a bunch of overly-serious crybabies. The basic story is that after having avenged his father’s death, Terry hits rock bottom, dusts himself off, and comes out the other end stronger. Good, good. Going Rocky III is the perfect direction for a follow-up.
The problem is that Terry comes off as a bit of a whiner and the other heroes try way too hard to vilify the movie’s main antagonist, who hasn’t actually done anything that terrible. Krauser shows up one day, challenges Terry to a fight, wins, and says, “Okay, when you get better, train and fight me again.” Krauser isn’t trying to take over the world or murder orphans or whatever. He’s just a dude with huge shoulder armor who wants a good fight.
But everyone acts like Krauser’s the absolute worst. Terry starts drinking and falls to pieces while his buddies hope to get revenge. What a bunch of jerks.
While a fun romp, the worst thing about this sequel is how they redesigned Krauser. Gone is his mustache and forehead scar for the sake of making him seem younger. Kind of a bullshit move, considering he’s supposed to be the half-brother to middle-aged Geese Howard.
7. TEKKEN: THE MOTION PICTURE (1998)
This hour-long anime is almost great but just can’t stick the landing. It runs into the same problem as Mortal Kombat: Annihilation where the game series tells a specific overall story but the movie cuts corners to tell the same story. Tekken: The Motion Picture covers the first Tekken while setting up Tekken 3 and skipping Tekken 2 completely.
It means that everything’s well and good until the confusing and rushed finale. Otherwise, the movie is a fine use of the Enter the Dragon formula. Heihachi Mishima has a special island fighting tournament and the entrants include his vengeful son, a couple of cops investigating the situation, a gigantic robot, an angry Native American girl, two feuding assassin sisters, and a bunch of awesome characters who only get about three full frames of appearances each. Really would have liked to see something from Paul, King, and Yoshimitsu, though.
Other than Kazuya being pissed at everything, the best scenes are the over-the-top ones. When Jack does crazy robot stuff, when dinosaurs show up and start eating people, and that memorable sequence where Heihachi catches a hatchet with his mouth and then shatters it with his jaw.
6. STREET FIGHTER (1994)
I know this movie is just a GI Joe script with Street Fighter names pasted over it. I know it’s a cheesefest of dopey ideas and Belgian accents. I’ve long accepted that. Thing is, the movie is still a total blast to watch. What it lacks in faithfulness to the source material, it makes up for with pure camp and ham.
The 16 characters from Super Street Fighter II are represented here, except Fei Long is replaced with the forgettable Captain Sawada. How ironic that the movie star character isn’t even in the movie!
In general, the movie features some head-scratching depictions of classic Street Fighter characters. All-American Guile is played by Jean Claude Van Damme, Charlie Nash and Blanka are the same character, Dee Jay is an evil hacker, Ryu and Ken are comedic conmen, and Dhalsim is a frumpy scientist.
It’s Raul Julia’s M. Bison who keeps this guilty pleasure afloat. He’s to Street Fighter what Frank Langella’s Skeletor was to Masters of the Universe. He gives 110% and his performance is easily the best reason to watch this movie. It’s truly a wonder to behold.

King of Fighters: Ranking All the Characters

The movie is infamous for inspiring a fighting game based on it, but you know what nobody ever talks about? The Double Dragon movie also had a fighting game based on it made by Technos and released on the Neo Geo. And Double Dragon wasn’t even a one-on-one fighter to begin with!
Anyway, if you intend to sit back and watch Street Fighter, make sure to add in the RiffTrax commentary.
5. DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE (2006)
Enter the Dragon meets Charlie’s Angels is a heck of a concept, but DOA: Dead or Alive is so confidently tongue-in-cheek that it succeeds as an action comedy that’s way better than it has any right to be. Part of why it works is that Dead or Alive has never had much of an overarching storyline, but is more defined by the individual characters (plus, you know, all the cheesecake). Enough of those characters appear in what’s your regular “fighting tournament on a mysterious island” setup.
The whole thing moves with such energy that it’s easy to get sucked in. It’s the opposite of the live-action Tekken movie, where even though the film features accurate versions of all the characters, everything is so drab and lifeless that you just can’t wait for it to be over. In DOA, the combatants spend their downtime playing cartoony action volleyball with Fake Dennis Rodman on commentary, while in Tekken everyone mopes about dystopian capitalism.
Other than Helena’s character being “important dead guy’s daughter,” most of the main characters are charismatic enough to keep your attention during the 3% of the movie when fights aren’t happening. It must suck for Ninja Gaiden fans that Hayabusa is depicted as a total dweeb, but he at least gets to do some cool stuff here and there.
The movie also has Kevin Nash playing a character based on Hollywood Hogan and he’s so likeable that I’m genuinely bummed that he peaces out about halfway into the movie. Luckily, the movie is entertaining enough that I didn’t even notice until after it was over. It helps that during that time, we get more of Eric Roberts, his amazing hair, and his special sunglasses that turn him into the ultimate martial arts master.
Spoiler alert, but the secret to defeating him is, get this, removing his sunglasses!
4. MORTAL KOMBAT LEGENDS: SCORPION’S REVENGE (2020)
It took a while, but Warner Bros. Animation is on fire these days. After that Batman vs. TMNT movie and Teen Titans Go vs. Teen Titans, the studio appears to be hitting more than they miss. That’s exactly the kind of team needed to put together the latest animated Mortal Kombat movie.
This is the umpteenth retelling of the first game’s story. Not only does it have to compete with the first live-action movie, but also the events of Mortal Kombat 9, which depicts the tournament in cutscene format. Fortunately, Scorpion’s Revenge has a few tricks up its sleeve. First, it puts Scorpion in the forefront as the protagonist. He was barely a character in the original movie and the game just had him kill Sub-Zero and feel bad about it for the rest of the story mode. Now he feels like a character in a crossover, making a mark on the original story instead of being put in the sidelines.
We also have the wonderful stunt casting of Joel McHale as Johnny Cage. More importantly, Jennifer Carpenter plays Sonya Blade, which is such a step up from Ronda Rousey’s voice acting in Mortal Kombat 11.
This cartoon has a very hard R when it comes to violence. From the very beginning, Scorpion’s origins are gruesome and grisly. Once Jax is introduced, it doesn’t take long until we realize, “Oh, that’s how they’re dealing with THAT plot point in this continuity.” Then there’s a surprise villain death late in the movie that not only comes as a shocking development, but it’s so graphic and nasty that you can’t help but be taken aback.
Scorpion’s Revenge is a fantastic first chapter of what is hopefully a series of animated movies, but it does have its pacing issues. Scorpion being the protagonist may be a welcome change, but at times it does feel like a square peg being crammed into a round hole.
3. TEKKEN: BLOOD VENGEANCE (2011)
One of the best things about the Tekken series is the endings. While the cutscenes from the first couple games haven’t exactly aged well, these CGI epilogues have become a staple in nearly every installment. What better reward for your time and success than watching a rocking action sequence with Yoshimitsu and Bryan Fury killing each other in the jungle?
And so, to play to the series’ strengths, Bandai Entertainment released a Tekken movie that’s really just one big ending cutscene. It’s not canon, but it feels at home with the games.
Since Tekken’s main conflict is with two ruthless megalomaniacs (Heihachi and Kazuya) and a disgruntled nihilist (Jin), it’s hard to treat any of them as a real protagonist here. Instead, they go with Ling Xiaoyu, who is portrayed as the person who sees the good in Jin and wants him to see the light. She’s given a robotic BFF in Alisa Bosconovitch because Xiaoyu is kind of a tame character and needs someone with chainsaw arms and a jetpack to liven things up.
The first hour or so is good enough to keep your attention and its lightened up by a couple appearances by Tekken’s best character, Lee. But once it gets to the third act, it just becomes a completely awesome Heihachi vs. Kazuya vs. Jin fight, with Xiaoyu taking a backseat to watch all the crazy shit going on. It’s a full-on fireworks factory, as we not only see Devil forms of Kazuya and Jin but a very special final form for Heihachi that’s a true delight for Tekken fans.
2. STREET FIGHTER II: THE ANIMATED MOVIE (1994)
Let it be said that for someone who grew up in the ‘80s and ‘90s, finding a faithful cartoon adaptation of a video game property was not easy. Link and Simon Belmont were unlikable sexual harassers. Mega Man was a more annoying sidekick than Scrappy Doo. Mario and Luigi teamed up with Milli Vanilli. Power Team was…a thing. When we got an animated movie based on Street Fighter II, it was mind-blowing. This was a movie where the very first scene was Ryu tearing Sagat’s chest into a bloody gash thanks to a well-animated Shoryuken.
There’s a lot going on in this movie, but at the same time, nothing is going on. By this point, there were 17 characters in the various Street Fighter II games, and outside of a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Akuma cameo, it feels the need to include every single one of them. Some get minor roles, like Cammy and Dee Jay. Then there’s Zangief and Blanka, who fight each other for no reason other than for the sake of giving them something to do. Even Ryu vanishes for a huge chunk of the runtime.
Once everything funnels into the third act, this movie is great. And the earlier fight scenes are straight fire too, including the memorable Chun-Li vs. Vega brawl. Even though the movie already feels true to Street Fighter II, it’s even better when you realize that it’s all supposed to be a prequel to the game itself.
Or at least I hope so. Otherwise, all Sagat gets to do is get his ass kicked by Ryu and get chewed out by Bison.
1. MORTAL KOMBAT (1995)
The stars truly aligned for this one. Mortal Kombat Mania was at its peak, so it makes sense that this movie was a retelling of the first game’s story with added aspects from the second game, all while hyping up the arcade release of the third game. CGI was such a novelty in Hollywood in the ’90s that even if it looked primitive, it still looked cutting edge at the time. It was the perfect time to release this movie.
But Mortal Kombat isn’t perfect. Reptile is embarrassing. Scorpion and Sub-Zero being relegated to goons still stings. I still roll my eyes at the part towards the end where Sonya is suddenly the damsel in distress and Raiden flat-out verbally buries her by saying she couldn’t beat Shang Tsung in a million years. Otherwise, it’s the perfect storm of ‘90s action garbage.
There are so many over-the-top and charismatic performances here. Johnny Cage, Raiden, Shang Tsung, Kano, and even Goro are a blast to watch. All 10 characters from the original game are given something to do and, most importantly, they realize how uniquely weird the game’s story is and actually dive headfirst into it. The movie isn’t embarrassed to be a Mortal Kombat movie but handles itself well enough that we aren’t embarrassed to be watching a Mortal Kombat movie.
Even with a PG-13 rating, the movie was violent enough. Kano talked up seeing a pile of frozen guts in the wake of a Sub-Zero fight, Scorpion got his skull sliced apart with demon brain goo spewing all over the place, and Shang Tsung got impaled to death.
With the reboot being rated R, going for the gore could very well be the right route to go, but for the love of the Elder Gods, don’t forget to have FUN. All I’m saying is, if even Johnny Cage isn’t hamming it up, then what’s the point?

Death by rabbits <3 I MEAN Mun questions!
1. What’s your name?
Online, I go by Lita. I also go by Pom - And yes there’s a reason I relate to Pomeranans and Pomskies but I won’t get into that here. XD Either or will catch my attention~!
3. Random fact about yourself?
I’ve been in this fandom, technically, for 20 years.I started playing the TCG and won my first duel against a friend on new year’s day, 2000, after getting my first cards for christmas right before. I just wasn’t actually rp’ing in it until a few years ago, when a dear friend of mine pulled me into the GX side of things after me dropping ygo as a whole for a while for personal reasons, and now @soulburnings wouldn’t let me leave even if I wanted to (and I don’t). XD
5. What’s your favorite song?
I don’t have a specific favorite song? I like a whole bunch? Uh... If I have to pick any of them, I might say I Will Not Bow - Breaking Benjamin, High Hopes - Panic At the Disco, Shining Star - Backstreet Boys... I have too many I really can’t pick. XD
7. Do you like horror?
Yes and no. Yes in that I like very limited, little bits of horror, no in that I don’t like it as a whole, really. I like Resident Evil, I play the RE games and Dead Rising and I love them to no end, I liked Zombieland, and I do kind of want to try Layers Of Fear after seeing a couple playthroughs... But for the most part, not really. I don’t stray too far from those. I can’t. More power to ya’ll if you do but I’m out. XD
9. Believe in ghosts?
I honestly can’t say no. I had an experience as a kid where I saw one (it literally couldn’t have been anything else and I wasn’t the only one who saw it; I and two others checked around for an explanation and found nothing) and I’ve been unable to say no ever since, even if I’m not a diehard ‘GHOSTS EVERYWHERE!’ kind of person.
11. Do you play video games? What’s your favorite if so
GOD YES. XD I love video games! <3 I actually always have one within reach and too many consoles to my name, but... Given how many copies of it I own, this honor might go to Resident Evil 4. I want to also say tied with it is the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy, the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy, Xenogears, Xenoblade Chronicles, Tekken, Final Fantasy 8, 9, 15, and 10, and Animal Crossing. Special mention to Arch Rivals on the original NES system for being my first game and the one that actually got me into gaming in the first place, always played with my brother. <3
13. How do you get inspired to write?
It just kindda happens? I’m not sure I can give a reason when inspiration can hit over making tea, so... But I will say, I get ideas off everything. A bit of advice is to never shut out the simplest things - How does your muse make tea? If you think about it, inspiration can come. XD Probably makes no sense, does it?
15. What’s your go to writing song if you have one?
For Mako, High Hopes. I’ve noticed lately I have trouble writing when there’s something playing that has lyrics, so I tend to turn to Lindsey Stirling’s music, or a game soundtrack, like Beat Saber‘s or that of Concrete Genie. If all else fails, I’ll hit up Youtube for some soundcapes.
17. Did you have a greek mythology phase or an egyptian mythology phase? Or something else entirely?
Already answered! <3
19. Pastels or dark shades?
Already done~
21. How long have you been writing?
I remember writing my first story when I was getting into Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, so... About 23 years, maybe? Lord that makes me feel old to say, Vel, why do you do this to me? XD I was definitely writing in the late 90′s though, so that’s a thing.
23. Angst or fluff?
Both! I just prefer them written well? XD Like needless angst AND needless fluff are just... They don’t need to be there? So don’t? XD Give them a reason for being. Make them make sense for being there. That said, I’m probably more likely to magikarp-flop myself into a fluff thread faster than I am an angst, just because I’ve been through enough offline during the day I want some feel good cute.
25. Do you write on any other platforms?
I do, kind of, write on Discord, but that’s about it. I’ve done messenger boards and emails but this and through IMs is pretty much where I’m at these days.

Chapter 1
A new tournament, a new era. The strangest events had happened throughout the world during the last event. With Heihachi reported dead, the tournament had been held by an unknown sponsor. No one knew who, or any of the finer details, just that they would be fighting for a cash prize and possible contract for something much greater. Whatever it was, it attracted the usual crowd.
Rae had heard of the tournament many years before. As a teen she had eagerly watched the events on the TV with her family, but it had not been until the new announcement that she had even considered entering. Her hand-to-hand skills had been pretty weak at best, but she had decided to set a goal for herself to enter. Oh, what she could do with that prize money! She grinned to herself as she imagined a win, cheque in hand, people cheering. She didn't care much about the glory, but the money was certainly enticing.
She had come from a poor background. A small village in the United Kingdom where most people worked their fingers to the bone for enough money to live on and take care of their families. She came from a small family. One mother, one father and her two siblings. They had always struggled to make ends meet, even with everyone working, so the prize money would certainly change everything for the better. So, with the try outs over, the contract signed, she was good to go.
---
The day of the first heat arrived and Rae had flown out to the first location. She had never felt so important. A private jet, free accommodation? It was sweet. At the first stage she sat in a makeshift area that had been erected for the entrants to change, get ready and even train in and was surrounded by so many familiar faces. Ones she had seen on TV so many times. Excitement and anxiety welled up within her. She had never dreamed she would get to meet them, let alone have to fight against them. A surge of panic hit her like a tonne of bricks, as the realisation hit her that they were skilled and she was probably going to get beaten very badly. Despite her training day and night, she still worried that she was not good enough. An anxious sign left her lips as she sat and watched Paul Phoenix train with a dummy, his powerful punches landing in the most brutal fashion.
---
Raihiko was ready. She had been training for years for this tournament and she was finally able to compete. After the preliminaries, she signed the contract and headed to the first rounds of the Iron Fist.
As she walked into the make shift training area, the sounds and smells of the competition hit her hard. She was really here. She was really doing this.
She had never cared for hand to hand combat. She enjoyed the sound of metal on metal, the feel of the steel slicing through flesh. She had been forced into similar competitions, though you won your life, not money. This could prove to be an interesting competition. Hell, the only reason she even agreed to begin training was for the cash alone.
She wore her sparring garb, feeling quite naked without her tonfa strapped to her hips.
She stood and watched as a woman went to town, beating the shit out of a bag of sand. Her clothes were... Revealing. How could one fight in such a garb when there was the lingering fear of your tits falling from your top? She disliked women like that. Half the time they did it to purposefully reveal themselves, either to gain the upper hand or for attention. She sort of hoped she would be fighting the woman today. She could beat her ass and get her out of her sight.
She began walking again, not quite looking where she was going, suddenly hitting a brick wall. Or at least that was what it felt like.
"Oh! I am- uh..." she looked up at the menacing form of a man. If he could be called that. He was tall, severely scarred with white hair and a skeletal mask across his face.
"Watch where the fuck you are going." he grunted as he walked away without another word.
Rae was sat on a small wooden bench, adjusting her knee and elbow pads when she heard a growling voice come from down the side of the lockers next to her. It seemed all the other fighters in the ready room hadn't even registered it. They were obviously used to trash talk and scuffles to the point it didn't bother them. She turned her head and leaned around so she could look at who had complained and caught sight of two extra people. A Japanese woman wearing black attire and a white haired... Monster of a man. Her eyes moved up and down as she noted all the scarring on his chest. Were those bullet holes!? She quickly looked away and yanked on the straps of her elbow pads. She knew who he was now, but he was so much more intimidating in person. Would she have to face him that round? She sure as hell hoped not.
Paul finished beating seven shades out of the training dummy, stretched and made his way over to the bench to grab a towel. After wiping his head and wrapping it round his neck, he let out a hearty laugh. "Nothin' beats a good traning session, man. Nothin'!" Rae gave him a half-smile and straightened her shoulder pads. "You wanna get in a quick practice round before we start?"
Rae shook her head. "I'm, er... I'm good. I think I'll save my energy for the actual match."
Paul shrugged and looked over to Raihiko and gave a wave with his gloved hand. "Yo! Newcomer! Wanna spar some?"
Raihiko jumped as she turned quickly to come face to face with a man with a strange hair style waving at her. Well this just keeps getting better and better.
"I... Would but, I must find my locker and warm up. Perhaps we shall be put together in the ring?" she smiled and waved him off before continuing on. She found her locker, tossing her stuff on a bemch besides a young brunette woman. She shoved her given key into the slot and opened it, tossing her bag in, the destinct clinking of steel sounding within. She flinched as she looked around hoping no one heard. She would never cheat, but she just couldnt part with her beloved tonfa. She slammed the locker shut before shoving her key into her bossom.
Rae stood and kicked the toes of her boots on the floor to make sure they were on right and couldn't help but chuckle as Paul gave an almost defeated look at them both.
"Aw shucks, ain't no one willing to spar these days." He slowly trudged his way over to his locker, unlocked it, reached inside and started munching on something. The wrapper was noisy.
"So..." Rae turned to Raihiko. "You speak English? I'mglad. Some of the people here don't. I was worried I might not be able to at least hold a conversation." She tugged on her gloves and zipped up her blue leather jumpsuit as much as she could without trapping her own skin up in it. "What brings you here? Or should I not be talking to you? I don't even know protocol at these events yet."
Paul peered out from his locker with his cheek bulging. "Nah, s'ok. Itsh good t'talk. Jusht..." He swallowed loudly. "Just pick yer people wisely."
Raihiko slammed her locker shut and sat down to adjust and tighten her boots.
"Hai, I spent several years abroad in the US so I had to learn. Thise Americans. It is a wonder they can breathe unassisted. No offense." she looked over to the man who was stuffing his face with a shrug before turning her attention back to the brunette.
"Kobayashi, Raihiko. And you are?" she asked with a smile. She was weary, but she would be friendly. After all, she didnt want to make enemies right out the gate. Seemed she already pissed off one big ass brute. No sense in pushing her luck.
"Rae... Uh, sorry. Rachel." She offered her hand to shake, but quickly retracted it out of nervousness. "Taylor."
Paul choked on whatever it was that he was eating and pounded on his chest for a moment. "Heyyy, we aren't all that bad y'know! Some of us can breathe just fine! Well, when not inhaling crumbs."
Rae snickered over at the man and he cleared his throat, before turning back to Raihiko. "I saw you almost died a moment ago. Good job on not getting torn to bits there."
Raihiko looked to the American, raising a brow as she looked him over, as though her point was just proven. She then turned her attention back to Rachel.
"What, big bad and ugly? Heh. Yeah. Making friends already. I hope I am not against him. There is something in his eye that isnt right." she shrugged as she stood and straightened her garb. This was going to be interesting.
Rae tilted her head a little to grin at Paul again, then looked back at Raihiko. "You... Don't know about him huh? Well, I'd say there's something off for sure." She adjusted her shoulder pads once more to make sure they were all set and shook her head. "Believe me, facing off with him is something I am NOT looking forward to. He's terrifying."
Paul slowly scooted over and scratched the back of his neck. "Ol' Be-ran there?"
"Oh fuck, don't let him hear you call him that." Rae couldn't help the snorting laugh that came out her mouth.
"He hits hard, but he has his weaknesses. When I faced off with him last I saw that he leaves himself wide open."
"Oh?"
"Yeah, man. He's all about them power hits!"
Raihiko raised a brow as she glanced at the brute. He was currently beating the snot out of a practice dummy. He reared back for a hell of a punch and sand went flying everywhere as the poor thing exploded. Rai blinked before turning her attention back to the two.
"So I take it he is a usual competitor? Forgive me, i have not actually seen any of the fights. My Sensei told me about it a few years ago and began training me for it." she shrugged as she went back to tightening her boots and straightening her attire. "So who else is a returning competitor? Are you?" she asked as she looked at Rae.
She shook her head as she waved a hand in the air to swat away a little dust that had blown their way. "No. This is my first time too."
Paul let out a stifled snort, to which rae responded with an exasperated sort of glare. "Really?"
"Hey, c'mon. I couldn't help it. That one was jess too easy!" He turned to Raihiko and flexed a bicep. "I'm always in these tournaments. I've been comin' since day one!"
Rae snorted. "I bet."
"Ayyyy!"
The two gave a small fist bump, before turning in surprose as the remains of the training dummy Bryan had been pounding was hurled over their heads. It landed in a heap of ragged sack cloth on top of the lockers.
Raihiko quickly ducked in order to avoid getting hit with any flying debris. She quickly turned and glared at the white haired brute.
Bryan grinned a malicious grin as he watched the small group by the lockers. Oh how he hoped he would be in the ring with that red haired jap. Teach the little cunt a lesson for running into him.
Great. Now sand was all in her hair. Rae glared over at Bryan, but instantly regretted it. "Ah shit."
Paul scruffed at his hair and dusted himself off. "Sup?"
"Nothing. It doesn't matter. Any ideas who we are against first?"
"I think I saw you were against Christie Monteiro on the roster. I'm against Lucky Chloe."
"Ew." Rae wrinkled her nose. That girl had appeared out of no where in the previous tournament. She was an idol and she disgusted her to her core. "I feel for you, I really do."
Paul let out a very loud, raucous laugh. "Y'think that's bad? I think I saw Raihiko here was pitted against Alisa Bosconovitch!"
Bryan raised a brow as he glared right back at the brunette. Who did she think she was? Glaring at him like that. He held the post to the dummy in his hand, squeezing it tightly and reducing it to splinters before he trudged off to find another to beat the shit out of before the tournament started.
Raihiko looked to Paul, a curious look on her face.
"Who is this Alisia?" she asked as she finished her adjustments and crossed her legs as she sat straight. She didnt like the sound of his taunting.
Rae kept glancing back to Bryan, then to Paul and Raihiko and back again, the fear that she'd well and truly made herself a target sending shivers down her spine.
Paul grinned, oblivious to her inner turmoil and folded his arms. "She's a robot. Pink hair. A bit cringey really. I mean, what does she think she is, some anime character? You'll see anyway. Have a good one, yeah? I gotta high tail it out. I'm up next!"
"Yeah, see you." Rae watched as the skycraper haired man swaggered his way out and turned back to Raihiko. "Well, good luck. At least neither of us are facing 'You-know-who'. I suppose that's a relief, eh?"
Raihiko shrugged.
"I suppose, but i have to go against some Ryuzaki charactor wannabe." she grumped as she looked around realizing less and less people were around. "Are these... Matches... That fast? Want to go watch his? See how this is going to go?" she asked with a smile as she stood and stretched.
"Paul's match? Or Mr Psycho? I'm down to watch both if you are. This will be fun if you've never seen a match before. It'll give you a good feel too." She slowly moved her way towards the entrance and peered out. A match was just about to start. Bryan versus... Was that... "Lei Wulong!? Oh no! This is the worst match up, who the fuck thought this would be a good idea!?"
"Ok so... What does that mean?" she asked as she watched as the bell rang and the brute went in, not holding back as he immediately began beating on the guy. It was interesting watching the man defend himself.
Rae instantly got into it and was ducking and dodging as she watched the pair. "Oh OH NO! Shit!" It took a moment to register that she had been asked a question. "Hm? Oh! Well... The story is Lei has been out for his blood for years. Well, not really his blood. Something about Bryan's past. So the fact they paired these two is a bit silly."
She watched as Lei spiralled around, hugged the floor and jumped up as Bryan threw a powerful punch, then a kick.
He was out for blood. A maniacal smile graced his features as he threw punch after punch. He wanted this mans guts spilled across the arena. He let out a loud battle cry as he threw a kick up, successfully round housing the man across the room.
Lei landed on the floor about 10 feet away, groaning and growling as he struggled to get up, but Bryan wasnt going to let that happen. No. This was personal. He ran at the man, nearly jumping on him, knocking him back onto his back as he threw punch after punch anywhere and everywhere he could connect with above the shoulder line.
Raihiko watched in horror as the savaged man attacked the other... Lei he was called. This was madness. Were there no rules against this? O h wait. That's right. The only rule is no weapons. How silly of her to forget.
It didnt take long for the madman to subdue his opponent. Was he alive? He looked to be breathing, but he was pretty well banged up. Rai gulped loudly as the white haired man turned and headed right for them as people ran in to help the other fighter off the floor. Great.
Rae was still throwing air punches as she watched and letting out the odd 'ooh' and 'ahh'. Lei was battered and bruised as she had expected. She had seen Bryan fight plenty of times before, but something about seeing it all in person made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. The round was over, he had won and she almost hadn't even registered that he was stomping thier way until he was almost a few feet away. "Oh fuck. I mean, uh..." She scooted to one side. The last thing she wanted was to end up like Wulong.
Rai had to admit that the young woman besides her was quite the animated one. She quickly moved out of the way, letting the behemoth of a man through.
Bryan growled an "outta my way" as he nearly bumped into the brunette that had dared to glare at him earlier.
"Well ladies." said paul as he stretched his arms up and cracked his neck and knuckles simultaniously, "That would be my cue." he said as he stepped forwards and looked back, finger gunning the both of them as he winked.
Rai rolled her eyes.
"I think i am next, actually." she said as she looked up at the board.
Had she been able to she'd have melded with the door frame as he growled his words. Alas, she couldn't, so had to clench her teeth and scrunch her eyes shut as he breezed past her, the scent of sweat and the blood on his knuckles rocketing up her nostrils. It wasn't until Paul spoke that she managed to shake herself free of the vision of being pummelled into gore.
"W-Well... Good luck, I guess. Though I kinda don't want you to win, since it might mean I'll have to face you further down the line."
Paul offered a wink. "Thanks for the vote of confidence, Missy!" WIth that, he was gone, off to face his opponent.
Rae turned to Raihiko and let out a small sigh. "I suppose I should find a training dummy. I didn't want to agree to sparr with Paul, but I do think I should get in some practice. Loosen up. As much as I'd like to watch Paul, I think I'll go do that while I have time. You can join me if you want, or you can stay and study Paul's fighting technique just in case."
Raihiko nodded. She certainly needed to warm up. Especially since she was next and she had just gotten off a plane only a few hours earlier.
She slowly made her way around the corner and to the right where another set of dummies sat. "Oh... Shit."

I have some questions, aside from the Blade Runner esque lore, since these people are on time as told by the bartender checking his watch, why does everyone look surprised?
Everyone who may of not had the luxury to travel or may have had this feeling for a while in ones home town you see everything as kind of dull and dream of greener more eventful pastures. What happens when the world around you keeps the familiar faces but changes the theme of the world around you? Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi embodies this with various nods to Gainax works. Theirs a deeper plot and more history then the area lets on being quite a ride. I recommend it to any otaku, Gainax studio fan, or anyone who feels trapped where they live as it covers escapism somewhat.
If the other show embodies escaping ones home with parody worlds, this embodies the love of ones home with passing through of intergalatic characters...even though its Jersey. When Jersey resident Coop comes across a giant mech robot what does he do? He modifys it and straps his car to it. Proceeding to take it out for the occasional spin on the town and in doing so attracts the mechs original pilot Kiva. This in a way puts Coop in the position to become the guardian of Earth....well at least the Jersey area this show is Megas XLR. The games humor has lots of homage to various works of the far East and western culture with cut away gags, entertaining fight scenes, and imaginative amount of weaponry within the mech its a joy ride worth a glance if you get the time. Downside of the show is only 2 seasons were made before being canceled to be written off for tax purposes...yeah. My favoriote part of this show was the mechs controls, either using a steering wheel or SNES controler. Could you imagine a video where you play as a mech with infinite buttons from the point of view of the cockpit and you get so many weapons its the fun of whatever combinations you put in and can do.
This weeks movie is the dark zombie horror comedy Shaun of the Dead. When North London is at the disaster of a zombie apocalypes Shaun tries to forge together a hair brained scheme of running out and finding his friends to hide in a pub, perhaps to impress his ex, perhaps for a pint, perhaps genuinley for the safety of his mom and step dad? The game has a good bit of witty satire and has lots of gags throughout like other human parties with a similar situation passing through, struggling with actualy killing a zombie, and other issue that may be a inconvience during a zombie apocalypse.
This weeks face off is a two versus two bout.
Two fighters from Tekken and two from King of Fighters
We have the heavy hitting android of Tekken Jack and his partner in his bout is the aggressive cyborg Bryan Fury.
On the King of Fighters team we have two team mates. Clark the heavy hitting grappler and Ralf the haymaker throwing, rushing charge style.
What happens when these two teams clash? Its a battle of strength and skill.
Vs:
Clark & Ralf(KOF) vs Bryan Fury & JACK (Tekken)
Hope you enjoyed this episode or post or however you wanna phrase it. Be safe, treat yourself well, and pay your taxes.

PlayStation VR Library Now Over 100 Titles
Originally launched on 13th October, 2016, the PlayStation VR went through something of a rocky start to reach its current position as king of the high-end virtual reality (VR) castle, with over 1 million units sold. With the upcoming release of the updated PlayStation VR headset, this seems like a good opportunity to look at the history of the device so far, and what is currently available for users to play.
Upon first launch, the PlayStation VR’s popularity appeared to take Sony by surprise, as the company had not produced enough stock to meet demand, a problem particularly seen in Japan where customers queued around the block on restock days. With the new PlayStation VR version seeing initial release in Japan later this month, lets hope Sony have learned from experience.
The PlayStation VR features a 5.7 inch OLED panel with a display capable of 1080p resolution, the device also has a video output box that allows video to output to the TV as well as the headset as well as providing processing for 3D audio effects. Though the PlayStation VR has no build-in headphones, it has a standard 3.5mm audio jack for users to plug in their own headphones, or a third-party audio solution such as the Mantis. The headset has nine LEDs for position tracking, which is PlayStation Camera is responsible for.
A run down of the currently available PlayStation VR titles follows below:

Koei Tecmo: One Last Chance for English Dub
It has been nearly three years since I started writing the Koei Warriors Rant Series in reaction to Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate and Samurai Warriors 4 being localised without English voices. Over the years, I have learnt a lot about the localisation and dubbing of animes and video games, along with the sad truth about gaming companies - they don’t listen to their fans when it comes to some particularly important elements.
Over the course of the Koei Warriors Rant Series and later, Dub Logistics, I have changed my focus of my ranting and discussion from Koei Tecmo to other Japanese gaming companies. However, I have noticed recently that despite my efforts, Koei Tecmo have still not dubbed some of their most important games, which I will outline below. Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that I provide this ultimatum hypothesis:
If Dynasty Warriors 9 and at least one other game (preferably Dissidia Final Fantasy NT) is not dubbed on release, then Koei Tecmo will likely never dub a Koei Warriors game again.
As you may know, Koei Tecmo have disgraced their dub fans time and time again with their lack of English dubbing in localised games, particularly in the Koei Warriors series, which is the main focus of this post. Here are a few examples of the “important” games that have not been dubbed:
Warriors Orochi 3 (despite a two-year gap between releases, Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate has not been dubbed as well)
Samurai Warriors 4 (despite the game celebrating the tenth anniversary of the franchise)
A.O.T. Wings of Freedom (despite the original Attack on Titan anime receiving an English dub)
Berserk and the Band of the Hawk (same as above)
Before you start at me for being entitled or something like that, let me tell you now that I’ve heard all the reasons before and I will more or less have the same answer for what you are thinking. So why not just check out the Dub Hater’s Guide to Dual Audio and look up your reason before I have to ban and shame you on my Facebook page?
Here’s my reasoning about why I have picked Warriors All-Stars, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT and Dynasty Warriors 9 as the lynchpins for my hypothesis:
Warriors All-Stars
While the undubbed digital exclusive Dynasty Warriors: Godseekers celebrated 15 years of Dynasty Warriors 2′s release in Japan, Warriors All-Stars, also known as Musou ☆ Stars, celebrated Omega Force’s 20th anniversary and by extension, the Dynasty Warriors series.
At the start of the year, I made a post predicting that Warriors All-Stars would be subbed based on the number of franchises that have received dubbed or subbed releases. A few weeks later, I broke down the statistics and discovered that the ratio of dubbed to subbed franchises came very close at 7:6. When Koei Tecmo announced that they would be localising this game to the West, I gave them a challenge to implement dual audio for the characters who came from dubbed franchises. At the same time, I broke down the statistics again and determined a dub/sub character ratio of 15:12. I thought that if only the 15 characters received English voice options (maybe alongside the original characters of the game), then maybe the fans would be a bit happier. I mean, look at the Marvel vs. Capcom series, or maybe even Tekken and Street Fighter. If those games can have characters speaking their own languages (let along dual audio), then I don’t see why the characters in Warriors All-Stars can’t do that as well.
So in short, partial dubbing for this game would be sufficient in my opinion. Subbed characters like Toukiden’s Tokitsugu or Nights of Azure’s Arnice can still have their Japanese voices, while dubbed characters like Zhao Yun or Yukimura Sanada should have an option to switch between their English or Japanese voices.
UPDATE: 7 August 2017 - After checking the newly-created Steam page for Warriors All-Stars, it is now clear to me that Koei Tecmo intends on subbing this game, even with William from Nioh retaining his English voice actor. This is NOT a partially dubbed game, but rather a sub-only game, just as we predicted. As such, Koei Tecmo have failed the challenge that I have given.
Dissidia Final Fantasy NT
This game is not a Koei Warriors game, but there is a reason why this game is on the list. As you may know, Dissidia Final Fantasy was a PSP game that featured characters from every Final Fantasy game ever made. In 2015, it was announced that Dissidia Final Fantasy would receive a reboot for arcades, with a PS4 release being planned for at least a year after the launch. The game would be developed with the partnership of Team Ninja, known for developing the Dead or Alive games and being affiliated with Koei Tecmo.
The arcade version of the game was released on November 26, 2015. In early June 2017, an Amazon entry for a worldwide PS4 release was leaked, confirming an early 2018 release, similar to Final Fantasy XV. Currently, we have no information regarding its localisation or the languages available, but given that the game was developed with the cooperation of Koei Tecmo, we fear that the game may not be dubbed, thereby alienating and disgracing English dub fans.
As such, we hope that Koei Tecmo stays out of the localisation and release of this game, allowing Square Enix to release the game as they do best. However, being a Final Fantasy game, I can probably reassure you that it is a given fact that Square Enix would be responsible for the release of this game. All we can do now is pray for this game to be dubbed.
UPDATE: 7 July 2017 - It seems that we have confirmation of Dissidia NT being released with dual audio, thanks to a tweet from Square Enix community manager Dan Seto. Basically, regardless of what happens with Warriors All-Stars, everything stands on the localisation of Dynasty Warriors 9.
Dynasty Warriors 9
Koei Tecmo’s habit of not dubbing their localised games led to them forcing a partial dub for Dynasty Warriors 8. Camp voices and narration were omitted, to the outrage of English dub fans, and certain voices (like enemy defeated quotes) from Dynasty Warriors 7 were also reused. Now, don’t get me wrong, but I think a partial dub is better than having no dub at all. However, given their disgrace to their dub fans in recent years (particularly regarding the release of Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires), I think that it is time to say “enough is enough”.
If Dynasty Warriors 9 does not receive a decent English dub, then it is likely that future Koei Warriors games will never be dubbed again. Keep in mind that I’m not talking about other Koei Tecmo games like Dead or Alive and the Atelier series (which frankly, is still sub-par in terms of dubbing all the voiced lines).
With Dynasty Warriors 9 being an entirely new platform with the introduction of the open world system, we are predicting that this game will hopefully be more popular than any other Dynasty Warriors entry, even if the entire series is just repetitive in terms of gameplay. Without English voices, the games wouldn’t be as popular and successful as they are today.
UPDATE: 7 August 2017 - With the confirmation that Warriors All-Stars will be subbed and Dissidia NT will receive dual audio, this is basically a reminder that the fate of English dub in Koei Tecmo games rests with Dynasty Warriors 9. While it is clear that we should not expect English dubbing in most of their games (with the exception of the main Atelier and Dynasty Warriors titles, possibly including Xtreme Legends), we hope that Koei Tecmo will at least wake up and give us an explanation as to why they have not dubbed many of their important games. However, I realise that this “explanation” has been answered by a lot of their fans, some who are pretty adamant on defending their decisions. So while they have lost a lot of my respect for them over the years, I’m basically making Dynasty Warriors 9 my “last chance” for them, since I believe that they are probably saving up for this game.
As of this post, we have received no confirmation or explanation as to why Koei Tecmo is giving up on dubbing their localised games. By extension, I have not seen them implement my suggestion for funding an English dub through a Kickstarter-like campaign. If our hypothesis is proved to be true, then we may still have a chance for future games being dubbed on localisation. Otherwise, we can conclude that Koei Tecmo has stopped caring for their English dub fans. Until then, I will be posting updates regarding this on the NoDubNoBuy page, so stay tuned.
UPDATE: 13 Feburary 2018
Well, Dynasty Warriors 9 has been released with English voices alongside Japanese and Chinese (Mandarin) voices as well. It’s a 2 out of 3 result now, meaning that there is still some hope for Koei Tecmo to continue dubbing their games. However, because the cost to dub the game was too great, I have now decided to end my fight with Koei Tecmo and stop following their pages. In this post, I’ve identified over 15 games that had their potential dubs sacrificed in order to dub this one. Additionally, the recent SAG-AFTRA voice actors’ strike has caused them to change recording studios and fully recast the voice actors. I know the strike wasn’t necessarily Koei Tecmo’s fault, but that just did it for me.
We may have won, but at what cost? With things going the way they are, it’s better to just assume that Koei Tecmo will only dub the Dynasty Warriors games and move on.

In a perfect world, what does your T8 story look like? (And what is the educated, 'realistic' expectation?)
Hopes for Tekken 8
Hmm, well I wrote a post-Tekken 7 story with lots of my ideas in, and I guess that's probably still my preferred go to for a conclusion for Kazuya and Jin. It gives them both something resembling an opportunity at redemption, or at least goes some way to repairing a relationship between them, from which they can then try to find meaning.
I've also speculated in the past about a post-Tekken 7 return of Jun Kazama and what that could possibly look like. And another time I talked about the role of Hwoarang and Xiaoyu in helping Jin to find meaning in existence again. And I've also discussed some hopes and fears for Tekken 8 over here.
I think there are lots of different directions that a good story could go, and it will be more about the execution than the ideas. We could see the return of Azazel, as hinted by Zafina's arm, we could see the return of Jun and a possible canonisation of something Unknown-related, we could have a giant mecha-Heihachi, or Claudio's demonic arm careening out of control. Any of these if done right could make a great story, but for me, whether its good or not will come down to the arcs they let their characters undertake.
I've mentioned lots of times before, but I would like to see something other than just a repeat of Kazuya and Heihachi's fight, except this time between two devils. I would also like to see something from Jin that isn't just a mirror image of Kazuya except for plot armour reasons he still counts as the good guy. If Jin chooses to use his Devil the way Kazuya does, then he needs to fall and the narrative needs to embrace that he is as, if not more, villainous than Kazuya. If Jin chooses a different path, then I think that first of all needs to try and be a non-violent one, and, failing this, should at least show us his mental anguish in having to become the evil he is trying to defeat. Personally I would like something like a redemption arc for him, but not one when he just broodingly flies away like in Blood Vengeance. I want him to have found a reason for living and to try and repair himself and hold himself accountable to the world for his actions.
For Kazuya, I don't mind whether or not he gets a redemption arc, but I want the complexity of his character to be shown. I would like the sympathetic parts of his character to have a little screen time, not to absolve him of his actions, but to draw attention to the fact that an abused child used a genetic abnormality within him to fight for survival and that it is from this fear-bound mindset that we have the tyrant we know today. He doesn't need to be redeemed, but the tragedy of his humanity does need to be acknowledged.
I'm repeating myself a lot from other posts here, but I don't really have a 'perfect Tekken 8 story' in mind. As long as it treats its characters with integrity and resolves the arcs it has set up and does something interesting and true to character with them, then I won't mind.
I do think that is a lot to ask though. Later games have overlooked and neglected earlier game lore before, and I think with a project that's been going on this long and has so many millions of dollars wrapped up in it, it's quite possible that artistic merit won't be at the forefront of a future Tekken game. For me, lots of the great parts of Tekken were in what wasn't said, as much as what was. There are lots of summaries in prologues that lay the bare bones of a story and leave a lot to imagination. This made them very rich to me. By contrast, there's not a lot of room for imagination in something like the story mode of Tekken 7, and clumsier aspects of writing come through more obviously. There are lots of aspects of Tekken 7's story that I like, and I do feel like Kazuya's multifaceted elements haven't been forgotten with lots of the artistic choices in Tekken 7, but we also inevitably have to neglect the rich diversity of the Tekken universe in order to have such a linear, cinematic story.
I don't want Tekken to devolve into a Mortal Kombat-style forced chapter story with each character having an episode, however shoe-horned, but I do think there needs to be a lot more creativity in thinking about how to better let other characters have stories within the game. My favourite dialogue between Lee and Lars comes from a Tekken Pachislot game, where they talk about their differences in approach, and Lee is reluctant to adopt Lars's full on militarism. That should be something that is accessible and enjoyable through a main Tekken game, not left to chance footage only viewable on a slot machine in one country and language.
Even if they stick with their "chapter episodes" for non-main story characters, there should at least be a chapter for every character, including DLC characters, and preferably a full English translation of each character's Japanese biography at least available on the English Official Website, instead of the snippet biographies there are at present.
In terms of what I think they'll actually do, we've got it confirmed that Kazuya and Jin will clash at some point, and that Jin seems to make much greater use of his Devil Gene. From the way the choice with the breaking chains was discussed in the press release, it seems they will go the way of Jin letting Devil loose in some capacity. So I think a major componant of Tekken 8 will be 'how do we deal with unleashed Devil Jin', because the either Jin has to have a more Kazuya-style control of his gene, which means aligning his will more to Devil's, or Devil has fully taken over him and is out for blood. It would be kind of cool to see a reversal, where people again rely on Kazuya to bring Jin to heel, but at the end of the day he's again only seen as villanous for this act. More realistically though, I guess Devil Jin will defeat Kazuya, and we'll then have to have a section on how to bring Jin back to himself, perhaps involving Claudio and Xiaoyu. If we're lucky, we'll get Lars on the sidelines offering to shoot him, and Lee telling him to chill tf out until they try some other options first. Then maybe Jin will be cleansed of his devil and feel awful so walk off into the sunset never to be seen again. idk man, i'm just thinking of all the tepid ways to resolve this conflict whilst maximising showy fights, which is about my expectations for the game. I'm going to try and pour out some more fanfic just in case the game disappoints me into losing my drive.
Cheers for the ask!
