Skate America Ice Dance RD Recap: IAM WTF
We, nearly inevitably, have an all-IAM podium after the RD and I am over the IAM-ification of ice dance. There are 11 music cuts in Chock & Bates' program. 11! It feels like someone scanning an AM radio band to hear every single Oldies station in existence.
The choreo is as frantic as the music, which is one jazz hand away from choking on its own mediocrity.
Tumblr media
These are the reigning world ice dance champions. What is happening to their feet? Please, someone, I beg, explain why we have an abundance of two foot skating and half-hearted kick steps in elite choreography. It's giving Exhausted Dinner Theatre Understudy.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Fear and Gibson are out here parodying themselves by using a throwback disco cut that only serves to remind us of their superior '18-19 disco free dance. Also, why are we putting anyone in costumes that look like the upholstery from at 1979 Buick?
Tumblr media
I'm not going to dignify Davis & Smolkin with a gif. Champions of nepotism and benefiting from the IAM gleam. Eteri's lacquered claws have a long reach.

I said 12 months ago that if the older teams who stayed on after the Olympics don’t innovate their skills the younger teams will start to catch them.
Tumblr media
I wasn’t wrong.
Well Done Lilah and Lewis 🥇

Okay, so that sweet dreams/here comes the rain again cut was very very good. And that the speed of that final left was nuts.
I really enjoyed that.

first off, agreed with everything you said!  especially the Marjo and Zak love, the eagerness to see the US dance face-off among those younger teams, and the Li/Lew repetitiveness.
the Taschlerovi were a huge highlight!  I know their free dance was a miss for a lot of people, but it really landed for me personally.  it didn’t feel preachy or like a cheap attention-getting ploy; they seemed sincerely invested in & emotionally attached to the message of it.  I also thought their RD was one of the better ones in a mostly low- to mid-quality field (bring back the pattern i swear to GOD—).
Reed and Ambrulevicius’s free program was the other major highlight for me: such a cool music selection with some really unique dance moves and lift positions.
and agreed on Lolo and Nik as well!  I thought they were...just about the only top team with two good programs this season, lol, and that’s even with their RD being one of the half-dozen Congas we had to sit through, which is saying something!
the season's over! i loved it, even without being super invested in the top top dance teams- what were your highlights?
in dance for me, it was Marjo and Zak's programs all season, Kaitlin & Jean-Luc's FD at Skate America, watching CPom come back stronger and focused and with such sophisticated programs... next season with Green/Parsons, CPom and Zingas/Kolesnik will be interesting
Lilah and Lewis have done 3 recent seasons - disco, Vogue, and Gaga - with a similar vibe. hope they stretch next season- not sure they can go back to this well any more without it getting repetitive and snoozy. the ISU has been pushing ice dance towards entertainment, and L/L were 4th at Worlds doing this, so maybe they'll just keep doing "fun" programs. but i hope they have other dimensions they can show
Evan Bates and Nik Soerensen are 34, Marco Fabbri is 35. teams are staying in longer. but nobody can look at Laurence and say she's over the hill. i hope Lolo and Nik compete for another season and climb higher.
and ISU, the war on Ukraine didn't end. the athlete ban needs to stay in place. it's not enough to say Russia and Belarus can't hold ISU events

Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson's free dance costumes at the 2024 Europeans, 2023 Nebelhorn Trophy and 2023 Nepela Memorial. They skated to music from Rocky, Rocky III and Rocky the Musical.
They had matching warm-up jackets too, seen here at the 2023 NHK Trophy:

this line has always baffled me genuinely what is she talking about. what book
edit: anon helped me with this one, apparently this an idiom...! oops lol. see, i have heard things like "you could write a book on x, you know so much about it...!" but never "you wrote a book on x," like, in the past tense, like you actually wrote it. perhaps this is common and i just don't know about it, but either way, i'm happy my question is finally answered...
i'm afraid i do look a little silly now... but that's alright
NOOOOO GUYS STOP LIKING THIS POST ITS EMBARASSSINGGGGG (not genuine go ahead I find it funny)

OMG! This season’s rhythm dance is 80s!
I can’t think of anything that would suit the Disco Brits better. I can see Lewis in leg warmers already 🕺

so. this scene has been talked about a lot:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this scene is a really interesting example of the criminal minds writers giving tiny pieces of character backstories that are never elaborated upon, (or, more broadly, forgetting early established character details) because unlike a lot of examples where lines are said and immediately forgotten about, I do think this revelation informs a lot of Hotch's character. I'm not necessarily saying that the writers always had it in mind when writing Hotch that he experienced childhood abuse, but I do feel like you can see the ways in which he was affected. I don't know—this made more sense in my head, but it feels a little less forgotten about and a little less thrown in than some other examples. I think a big difference between this scene and some later ones is that:
The trauma happened pre-series
and
It was established in the first season.
criminal minds isn't great at letting their characters be affected by their in-series trauma for more than a few episodes (and then maybe it'll come up once or twice down the line because the writers remembered it happened) and a lot of later instances* of characters being revealed to have some major pre-series trauma suffer because the impact it would have reasonably had on them isn't consistent with earlier portrayals and sometimes even contradicts established information.
not that it can't be interesting to look at those earlier portrayals of their characters with the backstory that is added later. again, this all made more sense in my head: essentially, the reason i think this feels different to me is that the writers knew when they started writing hotch that he was abused as a child, while other characters who have traumatic backstories revealed have those backstories added much later, and so the writers have a not-great choice between showing the effects their trauma had on them when there was no sign of it earlier, or moving on with their character as if none of it ever happened.
*i'd like to quickly establish that i'm not talking about morgan here. that was also a pretty early reveal and feels consistent enough with early characterization that i wouldn't be shocked if the idea was first floated while season one was being written
