The Tie That Binds Us — Chapter Nine (Looking Toward The Future)

Summary: Harper makes some strides in her personal life, and she has a big question for Olivia.

The two days Harper spent with Olivia were some of the most peaceful she’d experienced in years, and perhaps the only peace she’d gotten since Hannah's death. As Monday morning rolled around, and Harper had to go back into the confines of Liberty High, it got her thinking. What if it could always be like this? Certainly it wouldn’t be perfect, it wouldn’t fix everything, but at least her home life could be good. And she was eighteen. There was no law against her packing up her things and leaving her childhood home behind.

Of course, that brought up the fact that she had nowhere to go. That wasn’t entirely true. Olivia was welcoming enough, but spending a weekend was far different from moving in on a more permanent basis. Olivia having her over was probably a good distraction, but if she were there all the time, would it weigh on Olivia, having her daughter's best friend as a constant reminder? She wanted to ask Olivia if she could stay longer, but the last thing she wanted to do was make things worse for her in the long run. Harper shook her head, trying to push the thoughts to the background for now. She had the school day to get through before she did anything about her living situation.

Her first stop was the guidance counselor, thankfully not Mr. Porter. She had been assigned to Mrs. Antilly, and she wanted to test out of Liberty High. She was more than ready to leave this place behind, and she was going to take whatever steps she could to do that. She was told it would take a couple of weeks to get all the materials together for the test, but that gave her time to study. Not that she felt she needed it, but it wouldn’t hurt to brush up, she supposed.

Two weeks. That was something she could handle. A countdown of sorts. And so it begun. Harper kept her head down for most of her allotted two weeks, the first flying by, and the second dragging along as if it would never cease to end entirely. She kept up her efforts with Clay, still mostly hellos and waves as they passed in the halls. She was at least getting a smile out of him now, though he still seemed haunted. She wondered if she should speak to him.

Finally, the time came, and she was called down to Mrs. Antilly's office to collect her testing materials. At least, that’s what she hoped, but it wasn’t quite that simple. "Seeing as it’s so late in the day," her counselor explained, "I’ll have you take the test bright and early Monday morning. It will probably take up most of your day, but with your grades, I don’t expect it to be too strenuous. You just come in, come right down here to my office and I’ll monitor your test for the as long as it takes you. Sound good?"

She would have preferred taking it right away, but the wait wouldn’t be too much longer, so she merely nodded. "Very good. I'll see you Monday, Miss Cassidy."

Harper began the walk back to class, but the bell was about to ring, so she slowed her pace and milked it until the bell rang and she could grab her bag and go. Monday would be her last day at Liberty, and it couldn’t come soon enough.

Just as she was coming up to her locker, Tony caught up to her. "Hey, haven’t seen you much these past two weeks. What’s been going on?"

"I'm about to be free of this place is what’s going on. Testing out on Monday."

"Congrats," Tony said, clapping her on the back.

"I’m also asking Olivia if I can move in with her this weekend," she said.

"Wow, that’s big. You mean it? You don’t think—"

"Tony, I’ve thought of every possibility there is to think of, and I figure it’s worth a shot. I’m going to ask her to be honest with me, and if she says no, then it ends there. But I love it there, with her, I—"

"Harper," Tony admonished, lowering his voice so they were less likely to be overheard. "Are you sure you know what you’re doing? Olivia is great and all, and certainly a better choice to live with than your mom, but I'm just afraid you might be…getting a little too involved."

Harper opened her mouth with the intent of contradicting him, but he did have a point. She liked Olivia, maybe a little more than she should, and it hadn’t been the first time she’d toyed with the idea of them ending up as something more than friends, or confidants, or whatever it was that they were now. She had no idea what Olivia would even think of that, so whatever she may daydream about sometimes, it remained unsaid.

"I’ll be fine. I know what I’m doing," she finally told Tony.

"Okay, if you’re sure. Good luck."

And with that she was off to Olivia's. When she arrived, Harper heaved a sigh, dropping her bag to the floor. It had been a long day. She could have just gone home, crawled into bed and hoped for a decent weekend, but going home would have only made things worse.

"Harper, is that you," Olivia asked, sounding as if she were several rooms away. Harper wandered closer to the sound of her voice, finding her standing in the kitchen.

"Why, were you expecting someone else," she teased, but her heart wasn’t fully in it.

"Bad day," Olivia questioned, skimming over Harper's attempt at a joke, and getting right to the heart of the matter.

"Just long. I couldn’t leave that place fast enough. On Monday I’m testing out, so hopefully, after next week, I’ll be done with Liberty High."

"Well you know you’re welcome to stay here if you’d rather not go home. We could watch a movie, have some popcorn, try to forget everything for a couple of hours."

"I think that’d be good," Harper agreed.

As the two settled in for another classic romcom and a bowl of popcorn, Olivia rested her arm on the back of the couch, just barely skimming over Harper's shoulder. She could get used to this routine, but she wasn’t sure she could let it go on if she had to leave for somewhere else. If Olivia didn’t want her to stay, then she’d be breaking her own heart, and possibly Olivia’s by pulling a disappearing act.

"Olivia, can I ask you something?"

"Of course," Olivia replied, her mouth half full of popcorn.

Harper braced herself. She didn’t plan on doing this now, but what better time than the present, right? She readjusted her position so she could be face to face with Olivia before asking her question. "I need you to be honest with me. Don’t worry about hurting my feelings or anything. Just give me your sincere answer."

"God Harper, what is it? You’re starting to scare me."

"Would you like it if I moved in here with you, like permanently?"

Olivia blinked back at her for a moment, and Harper realized she must have caught her completely off guard. Still, waiting for her answer was agonizing.

"I— would you really want to do that? I would love to have you here full time. First with Hannah and now Andy...I hate being here alone."

"Then I’ll stay. Like, for real. For good."

"For good? Aren’t you planning to go off to college?"

"I’ve applied to a couple, mostly local. I plan on finishing my application to NYU. It’s where Hannah wanted to go. I thought I should at least try, for her." At that, Olivia teared up, a sad smile appearing and Harper reached out and hugged her. When Olivia put her arms around her, Harper thought there was no better place in the world than this. If this was what her future looked like, then she was ready to embrace it, whatever challenges may come.

The UnTitledverse Fam during The Perfect Storm saga

Here's my Found Family of The UnTitledverse during The Perfect Storm saga.

We've got Joaquin Cobalt (age 15, height either 5ft 4inch or 5ft 5inch, transitioning male and accidental reincarnation) - Should never drive - Stubborn and short-tempered enough to get into trouble but skilled and competent enough to get himself and others out of trouble - Holds no love for bugs. Additional info: If Calvin isn't in charge, then Joaquin is - Has been traveling the multiverse for five years trying to survive not really updated on movies or places to eat and all that - Puts up a strong facade to be taken seriously - Though doesn't see the point in competition - Has yet to learn diplomacy - Mario's protege in the theatrics and showmanship.

Maisie Lockwood (age 14, height around 5ft 2inch, female and a human clone) - Shortest of the group and youngest of the group - Can't drive - Finds trouble somehow - Usually good at getting out of trouble but now she's dealing with robots and demons and whatnot so she kind of needs a little help - Loves bugs and refuses to help move them. Additional info: BABY! - Absolutely not mature enough to be a leader - Owen and Claire had her catch up on the best movies (especially A Land Before Time) - Quite affectionate when she wants to be - Loves to play fight, especially with Mario due to his shapeshifting abilities, also goes out of her way to scare the shit out of Joaquin, Calvin and Charlie sometimes.

Calvin Dearing (age technically 136 though looks like a stressed-out 36-year-old, height 5ft 6inch, male and a dream spirit) - Oldest of the group - Can drive but due to the sightings of a "driverless" vehicle, refrains from doing so unless under specific circumstances - Surprisingly the only who never gets into trouble and the one most often getting them out of trouble - Bugs remind him of the creepy critters he had to deal with down in the Purgatory disguised as Carmine Studio, so its on site for him. Additional info: The most mature and experienced one to be leader - Out of touch for films but knows the best restaurants - The least affectionate and competitive person - More the grandfather of the group but parent works too - A Dream Spirit is not suitable to be a host for anything.

Mario Emmet (age 39, somehow taller than Charlie at 6ft 3inch (5ft 11 inch in human form), male and a shapeshifting alien) - Can surprisingly drive well but may stray from responsibility sometimes - Tallest - Gets into a lot of trouble - Bugs remind him of himself so he doesn't harm them. Additional info: Not the baby and knows it but wishes he were - Would have them all eat in a sewer if he could - The most affectionate and touch starved boy - The most competitive out of the group - Play fights for days, Charlie being his most common partner but Maisie being his favorite playmate - Knows how to entertain guests so is designated host.

Charlie Emily (Technically 40 years old only looks to be in her early 20s, 5ft and 4inch, female and an android with a little bit of soul) - Knows how to drive responsibly - miffed that she's older than her alien boyfriend but he's a shapeshifter and is always taller than her - gets into trouble with Mario - Shows no mercy to bugs. Additional info: Tried leading for a day... almost got everyone killed - The one who knows the best things to watch and best places to eat - One of the most competitive people alongside Mario - Parent friend to Maisie and Joaquin - Does play fight with Mario but overall isn't outright seeking to do so everyday - Too shy and inexperienced in intimacy/affection or social events so Mario often takes initiative.

The Group: Mario views all of them as his family after losing his mother, while most of the others view each other as friends at best, though some like Joaquin and Maisie go "ah, that's Mario's girlfriend/Joaquin's brother figures". Mario and Charlie are the most likely to talk about their interests or whatever they can think of, while Joaquin and Maisie sit at the middle between "talking sometimes" and "listening in" while Calvin is all for just listening. Calvin is the only one alone who goes "we have food at home" while the others just vary in enthusiasm over seeing McDonalds. Mario is the most expressive and emotional while Calvin is the most stoic and calm, the others just sit in the middle. Calvin and Joaquin (+ Charlie sometimes) are the most likely to need alone time while Maisie and Mario need attention. Calvin's sarcasm leaves no one alive, and Mario relentlessly teases anyone he can find, though while Joaquin and Maisie get just a healthy amount that doesn't put them down, Mario shows Charlie no mercy with the height difference between himself and her despite the fact he's younger than her. Most of them are in the middle for showing affection through words and actions but Charlie and Joaquin usually show it through the latter. Mario and Maisie are designated goofballs, while Calvin and Joaquin are their designated goofball wranglers... Charlie's a wild card in this department though.

Faceclaims for Joaquin and Calvin are Brendan Jordan and Laurence Fishburne respectively. Maisie Lockwood still looks like her actress Isabella Sermon. Yet to find a faceclaim for Charlie Emily or Mario's human form but have some facial expressions he's made below (warning none of these doodles are colored):

Mas quando é alguém de fora que está falando besteira da sua alcateia, pula em cima porque só pode falar mal da Eichen Pack quem está do lado de dentro.

The Tie That Binds Us — Chapter Eight (Brought Together)

Summary: After an overheard call between her mother and Olivia, Harper chooses her side and spends the weekend at Olivia's.

Word Count: 1,298

Warnings: Harper's toxic mother

Harper had intended on a quiet Saturday and it had thankfully gone that way until the early evening when the sound of the landline phone ringing interrupted her peace. Her mother refused to pay for a cell plan for herself and had to be talked into getting Harper her own phone for months. Normally, Harper would have gone right back to her activities, not at all concerned about who might be on the other end, but something about her mother's tone told her that she should hear this.

"Hello," Colleen droned, and Harper could already sense her irritation with the caller. She sounded annoyed at the inconvenience of having to pick up a phone at all.

Harper picked up the receiver in her room to listen in. "Is Harper at home?" It was Olivia. Shit. She should have given her her cell number for this very reason.

"Is this that Baker woman? Whatever your name is. What’s it to you anyhow, lady? Don’t you have your own kid to worry about," Colleen spat. Harper raised a hand to her mouth, disgusted —but not at all shocked— at her mother for saying something so senselessly cruel. Harper knew there would be consequences for eavesdropping, but she couldn’t remain silent, not over this.

Harper came storming out of her room, slamming the phone down on the receiver on the way out. "Don't you have a sympathetic bone in your body, or do you only feel sorry for yourself?"

Harper watched as her mother set the phone down, seemingly unperturbed by her interruption and outrage. "Did she hang up," Harper asked when her mother said nothing.

"I guess," she offered with an indifferent shrug.

Harper shook her head. "I don’t blame her. You were an insensitive bitch. I’m going over there. Don’t expect me home tonight."

"Harper Cassidy, that woman is not your mother, or your girlfriend, or whatever the fuck you think she is. She's just a sicko preying on a child. My child!"

Harper felt the fight draining out of her. She’d tried for so long to get through to her mother, but it was just like treading water and not getting anywhere. So she stopped yelling. She’d say what she had to say, as one last ditch effort, but she wasn’t about to waste any more energy on her than she had to.

"I’m eighteen, mom. I’m not a child anymore. The fact that you would even think that of someone who actually cares about me really just says a lot about you. You might have given birth to me and call me your daughter, but it’s been a long time since you’ve been a mother to me." Harper punctuated the end of her statement by turning to the door, walking out, and closing it firmly behind her.

When she got outside to begin the walk a couple of blocks over to Olivia's, she let the tears stream down her face, trying to shut out every thought of her horrible mother. She needed to get out of that house. She’d spent too much of her life under her mother’s roof, and after Hannah, and how she just was to Olivia, she really couldn’t stand it anymore.

She arrived at Olivia's front door faster than usual when she walked there from home. She knocked lightly, realizing that she probably should have called instead of just showing up. When Olivia answered the door, she was seemingly unsurprised to see her. "I’m so sorry," Harper immediately apologized. "My mother can be—"

"It’s alright," Olivia soothed, but Harper could tell she’d been crying. No doubt that had been entirely her mother's fault.

"It’s not," Harper insisted, but let the subject drop. "Can I...stay here tonight?"

"Of course." Harper came inside and made her way to the living room couch, which she flopped down onto like her legs had been waiting to give the whole way over. Olivia joined her after shutting the door. Neither were in the mood to talk, but they could both use a distraction. Olivia turned on the tv just in time to catch the opening scene to Sleepless In Seattle. Both content to leave the film on, they spent the next two hours watching it and letting their bad moods fade away during the sweet love story.

Olivia flipped the channel to something else once the movie had ended and Harper didn’t catch much of whatever came next, favoring instead to take a short nap, her head resting comfortably on Olivia's shoulder. When she woke up an hour or two later, she pulled herself away from Olivia with a muttered apology, feeling embarrassed to have fallen asleep like that, but Olivia dismissed the apology and didn’t seem to mind.

The rest of the day went on in the most mundane of ways, but Harper loved the simplicity of it. She helped Olivia do a bit of light cleaning, and they coexisted with ease, maneuvering around one another like they’d done so a hundred times. It felt like a home should feel, more so than her real home ever had.

"Harper, what’s this," Olivia asked from the direction of the kitchen. Harper made her way to the sound of Olivia's voice and saw in her hand the crumpled up Hot or Not list that she’d thrown out the other day.

Harper's heart skipped a beat. She wondered how much Olivia really knew about what school was like for Hannah. With a deep breath, Harper began to explain. "It was a stupid thing a group of guys made. They put a bunch of names down in these categories and I thought it was just dumb and dismissed it, but it affected Hannah so much more. It might have been the thing to start it all," Harper ended with, her voice dropping to a whisper. She felt the pinprick of tears stinging the back of her eyes. She didn’t want to break down like this in front of Olivia, but Hannah's tapes came flashing back to the forefront of her mind and she bit back a sob.

Olivia didn’t ask any more questions, seeing as how it had upset Harper so. Instead she simply hugged her, and Harper let herself be encircled in Olivia's arms, letting a few stray tears fall before she was able to pull herself together again.

Once Harper's distress had abated, Olivia, with Harper still pressed against her, suggested that Harper take them for a drive. "Seeing as you passed your test, might as well get some more experience under your belt. Take me anywhere. Let’s just get away for a bit. Does that sound good?"

Harper nodded against Olivia's chest, then allowed herself to pull away. Driving was going to take all her concentration, so it would be a good and welcome distraction. They headed for the door, Olivia grabbing her keys and handing them over to Harper as they made for the car. It felt so strange for Harper to be behind the wheel, but she was slowly getting used to it.

Harper ended up driving them to the Crestmont. She hadn’t consciously chose that location, but for some reason it had felt right. Harper put Olivia's car in park and they both got out. It was late, and the theater had closed, so they just stood in front of it, side by side, and Olivia put her arm around Harper's shoulder.

They stood there wordlessly for several minutes, each caught up in their individual memories of Hannah before they eventually got back in the car and Harper drove them back to Olivia's. Whatever forces had brought them together tonight, maybe even Hannah herself somehow, Harper was grateful for it. They needed each other, and this time Harper wasn’t about to let her down.

this city is haunted...

being raised by a single mother isn’t always easy. in fact, it was never easy until vera’s mother began to work her way through the upper class of new york city. it was her mother’s job, after all. a last-ditch effort to keep little vera off the streets that soon afforded them a lavish lifestyle to which vera quickly grew accustomed.

still, watching men fall at her mother’s feet for the right price reason wasn't a genuine fairytale. behind the glitz of the champagne fountains, lavish jewellery adorning her mother's neck, the opera, and ballet, there was nothing but darkness when vera was forced to sit alone in her room for hours while her mother did whatever with whomever. she was lonely even when she wasn't alone.

the more vera saw her mother change from a man-swindling businesswoman to a swooning, fawning piece of arm candy to men who didn't care for her at all, the more she began to resent their lifestyle altogether. she felt guilt, at first, her emotions bold and fiery and unrelenting even when she was young, but as the years passed, and mother drifted further and further, vera turned hard and icy. she locked her heart away and swore never to rely on anyone else. least of all, a man.

vera was seventeen when her mother died, of circumstances vera still isn't clear on, and the whole world threatened to crumble around her. nothing could console her. nothing could offer her solace from the aching, desperate grief. not even the embrace of the white crocodiles, whom her mother was an associate of. nothing. so, vera fled. she packed what possessions mattered, photographs, a delicate pearl ring that belonged to her mother, and left new york city for good... or so she thought.

the irony was glaringly obvious when she moved back to the city five years after she left. everything felt different, and everything felt exactly the same. every street was tainted with memories that flashed behind her eyes whenever she dared to close them.

now, over a decade later, vera has remained behind the walls she built of ice and stone but found a way to mask those walls with florals and beautiful imagery. she clawed her way to her position at Stoneage Industries and cared little for the people she stepped on along the way. it's not that vera is heartless, though some (including she) may claim she is. she is like this because she has to be for survival. for vera knows what disappointment, loss, and pain feel like. she knows loneliness so well she swears it's etched into her bones. perhaps that is why vera feels so at home amongst the chaos, sitting on top of a pile of money brought in by robots and replicants. she envies their ability to feel nothing.
