Fax to Max
Just sent this Fax to Max. Feel free to copy it or use it as a basis for anything you write or say to them on the phone. I also included b/w images of one of the numbers we do know about and some of WBD's guiding principles.
Btw faxed for the first time yesterday. Very excited!
Tumblr media
Dear Mr. Zaslav,
I am writing to you concerning some recent news about the WBD-owned streaming service Max.
I was saddened to hear of the cancellation of Our Flag Means Death last week. However, my sadness has since turned into confusion and outrage.
Our Flag Means Death has consistently outperformed many other Max properties that have been renewed for another season, such as The Gilded Age and And Just Like That. Our Flag Means Death has a huge and passionate fanbase, online engagement with related key words are massive, not to mention the show is a critical success. I would like to point out the 94% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Our Flag Means Death has also appeared on many year-end "Best of 2023" lists.
All this is despite the fact that Season 2 has not even aired in most parts of the world. Season 1 brought in another huge wave of viewers when it was released on the BBC and made available for purchase on YouTube.
Moreover, Max has promoted it as one of their "Biggest Hits" when one logs into one's account. Especially among young and queer audiences, the show enjoys immense popularity.
Our Flag Means Death is now the latest in a long line of queer-centered shows that have been cancelled prematurely. And quite frankly, queer audiences are getting sick of it. We are a big and active demographic and many of us have plenty of disposable income. Indeed, I spent some of mine to buy Our Flag Means Death on YouTube, even though I had already seen it on the BBC - which I also pay for.
To add insult to injury, yesterday Max CEO Casey Bloys made the following statement: "I need Gay Twitter to come out and support The Gilded Age." This truly felt like a slap in the face, considering "Gay Twitter" has been tweeting about our wishes for another season of Our Flag Means Death for over a week at this point.
Your company appears to have gravely misjudged what gay viewers want from their media. A show like The Gilded Age, which features only one major character who is queer, does not cut it. We are after rounded, diverse queer characters, like those in Our Flag Means Death, not one single rich, white, cis gay man in a sea of heterosexual characters.
On Our Flag Means Death, Bloys later added, "the numbers weren't there for a renewal." I am very curious as to which numbers he is referring to. Max do not release their
streaming stats. But the mass-exodus of Our Flag Means Death from Max is anything to go by, I highly doubt his statement is accurate!
At this point I would also like to quote one of Warner Bros. Discovery's own guiding principles: "Intentionally seek out diversity, remove barriers, and create space for all to share ideas and be heard. Actively listen and lead with empathy, integrity, and transparency."
Suffice it to say Our Flag Means Death's fans have made themselves heard - numerous news outlets and Max's social media managers can attest to that. What we are missing at this stage are your "empathy" (calling on gay viewers after cancelling a show beloved by gay people is frankly offensive), "integrity" (sticking to your principles on seeking out and empowering diversity), and "transparency" (Bloys claims the numbers aren't there we have no way of verifying his statement).
To sum up, I implore you to follow one of your other guiding principles: "acknowledge mistakes and learn from them." Cancelling Our Flag Means Death was a grave mistake that you have the power to undo.
Please do so.
I look forward to hearing the announcement of Our Flag Means Death Season 3 soon. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,

So like, reading Maximum Ride again after like 4-6 years and like, there are so many things I’m questioning. For starter Manga reader only because I have this issue of not being able to read other forms of something I’ve already read. Brain kinda shuts down. So like
1) The whole Max, Martina (Martinez?), and Ella thing is just so strange. For starters Max is just awful. Prioritizing a random girl being cornered and has an easy escape route (Max took it after all) over your 6 year old sister who is in the hands of actual mad scientist who you know has actively done shitty unethical things is just, why?! Angel could’ve been saved just a bit earlier if you listened to Fang! But also the whole Martinez has something to do with the school but then it’s completely forgotten.
2) Max leaving the Blind guy and the 8 Year Old alone because “Angel (who is to young to know how to escape the school) might escape and come back here”. Gazzy has little combat experience because he is either told to run/hide or uses bombs and Iggy is BLIND!
3) Iggy really goes between I have the best hearing in the flock to I have normal human hearing. Like sometimes he can hear Erasers (like only twice?) or the homeless people in the subway and most of the time either he’s surprised by them (angel’s kidnapping or the ambush when Max and Fang leave) or Angel finds then before him (the two children). Like, JP make it’s consistent! Let Iggy be the Flock’s alarm so when they don’t have him in the group they suffer more casualties! Especially during when Erasers become robots so Angel becomes useless (like de buff the girl honesty)
4) speaking of Iggy. He has been shown enough times that he’s really REALLY smart. Building bombs, being able to remember recipes to cook, learning and mapping places out (E house and Anne’s place), yet JP literally doesn’t expand or utilize it to its fullest. Iggy could probably be the Flocks brain but no~, he’s to blind to be the flocks brain, let’s have Fang (the right hand man, second command of the flock, has invisibility powers and (I just learned) immortality) and Angel (child with telepathy, mind control, shapeshifting, and probably other things) be the brains and Max (leader and golden child) have moments here and there. The most I’ve seen of Iggy utilizing his brains was lock picking or making bombs/planning out traps. I could be missing some but JP makes it so hard to know.
5) the severe infantilism of Iggy
6) Gazzy still has no new power unlike everyone else (but Iggy’s are pretty shitty because they all are powers to “help him see without him actually seeing”). Like let him have telepathy or maybe a way that only him and Angel can communicate each other.
7) Nudge. Like she isn’t as bad as Iggy and definitely not the worst like Gazzy, but god she’s still really poorly written. She has this whole thing of not wanting to be a freak and wanting to find her family and wanting to be normal and not having to run all the time but every single one of these just stops on a dead note! It like stops existing after like 2-3 chapters and never brought up. Like she’s the most interesting girl in the flock but just so butchered.
8) their looks. Ok I’m not gonna harp so badly on the Manga artist because she is Korean and Korean beauty standards and all that is just bad in general but that’s just cultural differences. But one thing I never understand was that makeup transformation. Angel who has short hair suddenly has hair that goes below her neck. Nudge’s bleached streak somehow stays even though her natural hair should’ve shown by the 9 manga vol. Fang who always was shown with straight hair now has really curly hair. That’s not how hair works and let’s not talk about Iggy and those weird dark tips.
9) Fax and Ella/Iggy (which I learned was canon. I was wondering where all those Ella/Iggy stories came from) I don’t hate straight ships. I just hate these straight ships.
10) oh poorly written trauma handled even worse my beloved. Your telling me Iggy, the one who was awake the entire operation on his eyes doesn’t have trauma. Your telling me Fang, who almost died to an Eraser doesn’t have trauma. Your telling me Max, the one who continuously has a voice in her head, a chip in her shoulder, seeing an Eraser in the mirror doesn’t have trauma?! Angel?!
But like I could continue because there is so much but, there where definitely things I liked. I like how Iggy was drawn. Out of all the characters he looked always bony and skinny and long. Like even next to Fang who is supposed to be the same height he looks so twiggy and tall. Gazzy was so interesting because he was that grey “I suffered through the school but I was also way to young to remember” and I wish it was expanded more. I liked the Ari arc if you ignore every other Ari part in the story. Total was nice if we found nice as before he talked.
Like not to be the paranoid one but if I was in the flocked I would be questioning everything. A Gazzy photo from an abandoned apartment? They could’ve stuck it there after knowing their research was stolen just to trap the flock. Anna watching a new about Iggy’s parents? She purposely put it on so Iggy will be removed. Erasers still finding the flock? Did anyone thing that the others might have chips in them, especially when Fang, Gazzy, and Iggy where attacked. Also how does Fang still have his laptop when he was captured by the institute?

Y’know what? I think there should have been MORE Fang Ari rivalry.
Because Ari knows that he and Max are siblings from the beginning. He never makes much of an effort to hide that. And he also knows, between himself and Max, Jeb will always pick Max. He doesn’t understand why, and he doesn’t understand that Jeb’s version of love is going to hurt no matter what, but he knows that Jeb loves Max more than him. That’s fine, because it has to be fine, because he’s not allowed to be angry at Jeb.
But the flip side of knowing Max is his sister is knowing that he’s her brother. And knowing that he’s not her only brother. And knowing that, between himself and her siblings— this specific sibling, more often than not, because Max and Fang have always depended on each other— she will pick her sibling every. Single. Time. Jeb picking Max is fine, he’s okay with that, but there’s no way in hell that Max should be allowed to pick this asshole over her flesh and blood brother.
(Max does not know that Ari is her brother. Ari is seven, so this fact is irrelevant.)
So yeah. He can be mad at his sister all he wants, and he is, he’s always angry, but he hates Fang. This person who got to spend a whole lifetime with his sister, who keeps turning her against her family, who she so obviously loves more than she loves her father or her real brother. Things would be a lot better for all of them if Fang didn’t exist, and if Fang is alone and in pain and terrified when they die? Well, that’s just a bonus.
And on Fang’s side... this seven-year-old with sharp teeth keeps trying to kill them. They try not to think about how they nearly fell out of the sky, or their hospital stay, or how their body still hurts and will never be the same, but it creeps up on them at night, like bile in their throat, and Ari doesn’t stop trying to kill them. Once is a coincidence, twice is a pattern, three times is a vendetta, and Fang is not going to lay down and die. Maybe killing Ari will finally let them sleep at night.
Max treats them like a monster when they try to hurt Ari. Truly hurt him, not just to incapacitate, because she knows Ari’s name and that means he’s more important than all of the other Erasers they put in the ground. Never mind that all of them were also kids, and that this specific kid keeps trying to kill Fang. And he can’t be mad at Max, because they need them and Max to be okay, they need to stick together, so that’s all the more reason to get their would-be-murderer out of the picture.
So they keep trying to kill each other, until Max (finally, finally, Ari knew it could happen) sides with Ari, and Fang leaves. Ari always knew that he could only be Max’s favorite if Fang was out of the picture, and Fang only now realizes that they’re playing for favorites, and they’re not a seven-year-old, they know that’s not how the world works, but—
But they know that they can’t both live under the same roof. Knows that Ari has a date on the back of his neck that marks him for death, and that Fang has been dancing around death for so long that it’s going to come to collect eventually, so it’s just a matter of who cracks first.
Fang leaves, because they were never good at dealing with conflict. If Max has decided that blood means more than they do, then that’s her choice.
Ari dies. Not too long after, Fang dies, and apparently neither are allowed to rest because the next time they see each other, they’re both breathing, even if neither would call each other alive. Neither would call themselves alive, but if they say that out loud then they have to admit that something’s wrong, so it’s a whole lot easier to look at the other and call them a ghost that needs to be put down.
They keep trying to kill each other. They somehow get more violent, more bloody, because neither really remember how to fear death anymore. They’re both on borrowed time, and there’s no point in being precious with it. And if one of them gets a good enough shot in and puts the other in the ground, then that means one of their bodies will be put right.
(It feels like some divine joke, or perhaps a punishment for a sin neither of them committed, that the one person who would understand what it feels like— that they’re moving and speaking but never actually came back, that something pulled them out of their broken bodies and shoved them back in all wrong— would be the same person who they hate.)

Max: wow, Fang must have put a lot of thought into his decision to go to California
Fang: *heard the song Ride to California while they were at the football game and it was the first thing that popped into his head when they split up*

kento nanami is your dad’s boss … you meet him at a important dinner once that your dad forces you to come along to and he always holds a dark look in his eyes whenever he talk to you, he talks to you about the company, briefly says how pretty you are before he sips on his drink and licks his lips, you try to avoid him but for some reason he keeps trying to talk to you even though it’s clear you can’t hold a conversation with this man. so when your dad sprains his back and needs you to fill in for him, for a month max, he swears, you do it, never really realizing how much time the two spend with each other. you know little to nothing about the position or even what is it that these men do.
all you know is that you’re the only girl there… wearing a tight knee length skirt wasn’t the brightest of plans but it was hot outside and you just came to get some papers, sign them and fax a few of them. you’d be gone in less than two hours. you weren’t expecting Nanami to come into your dad’s office with yet another stack of papers, grumbling how important they were, about how he needed this done by the end of the day.
“did you work my dad like this? no wonder he sprained his back! i know he has desk work and has to go into the field with you and i don’t appreciate this!” you give him a piece of your mind and you know you shouldn’t, he’s your boss… at least for now, but more importantly he’s your dad’s boss, he could lose his job. but your mouth was moving faster than your brain. you can’t believe how selfish this man is.
“you never worked a day in your life huh?” he rolls his eyes. “i can tell that a cute little thing like yourself never so much a lifted your finger, you think he sprained his back because of me? what about that new bedroom set you pleaded with him to build you?” and that stops you dead in your tracks as you narrow your eyes at the man.
suddenly more annoyed than you ever been. “listen here! you don’t know me. you don’t know what i do! my daddy’s not expendable, this job is his life.” your eyes feel moist and your lips are quivering, he cups your face.
and you don’t know exactly how it happens but then…
he’s sinking in deep inside of you and he’s finally just like “well maybe i should give your dad a raise—fuck, maybe a bonus too…” you’re squeezing him so tight and he says: “he is a good worker, the fucking best. fuck… you’re so—fuck. you’re so damn tight…! pretty little thing like you milking my cock like you own it.”
“if i offered you a position,” his hips moving quick as he ruts deeper inside of you. “a permanent position…would you take it? work for me. Daddy’s not getting any younger babydoll. I’ll make sure he works one last good year and then you can return his favor. Just keep sucking me in just like that and I’ll just pay him all out, right now.”
