It's the morning of the second task, the day crisp and frosty, creating puffs of air as Mattheo huffed in exertion, marching down to the Black Lake surrounded by his friends. Suffice to say, he was pissed. It was fucking frigid outside and he hadn't seen you all morning, the combination enough to set him dangerously on edge.

Students and staff alike were cheering and shouting their encouragement for their champions, but he was completely zoned out, his mind bouncing back and forth between your lingering absence and the task ahead of him. He only perked up when Dumbledore's loud voice rang out over the crowd.

"Welcome to the second task!" it radiated.

"Last night something was stolen from each of our champions, a treasure of sorts—"

He dared them, dared any fucking one of them to come near him, welcomed it actually, a chance to take out his rage, but they steered clear, perhaps sensing it would be a losing battle despite the tritons they carried and their razor-sharp teeth.

He swam on, his muscles straining, aching with the exertion of pulling his weight through the thick water at such an unwavering and desperate pace, but the feeling faded, drained from him, as four distinct figures came into view, four bodies, tethered and floating in the water, their hair moving eerily around their faces, their bodies stiff and still, like corpses.

He identified you immediately and he swam harder and harder until he was close enough to touch you. Several people around you gasped, even Igor Karkaroff had the wherewithal to look surprised, impressed even, before Mattheo walked away, marching right off the platform and back towards the school as the entire crowd watched you go.

Apes walking in on you changing? We love a silly trope.

Caesar would just stare at your backside and say absolutely nothing upon entry of the nest. Intentionally, the Ape King knows what you look like bare, your shoulders nice to look at from a standing position as Caesar was often used to seeing them when you were on your hands and knees or he was spotted glances from under your jacket or shirt.

It's one of his favorite things to spectate in the times where you dress in front of him after mating, the dips and curves he was able to see in full splendor when your body was further away. Until you are turning around and yelping, knees drawing themselves together as you try to stagger your clothing in your hands to keep yourself shielded with a yap, "Caesar! Wh-when did you co-come in?!"

Only then would he look away noting the amused embarrassment that you had towards being naked in front of him as if it were the first time, turning so his broad back was pointed towards you.

There was no way to deny the scent of your arousal that hits him the moment that his green gaze flittered down and got a glimpse of your chest before you managed to cover it up with your tangled up shirt. Caesar huffs at your commanded gaze, rolling his neck in minor disappointment as you utter under your breath, "Seriously, how long were you standing there?" "Long... enough to see your---" "CAESAR!"

Noa would immediately feel frozen upon seeing any of your flesh that he wasn't meant to see in that moment, regardless of if you have mated or not. Most likely stunned at the first moment, he'd give you a long catering gaze from top to bottom before turning away as you stammer, trying to bring whatever you could to cover yourself while heat eradicated your cheeks, all the way up to your ears. "T-Turn around!" You squeak, bringing an animal pelt to cover your front side that Noa's eyes were blessed with upon entry.

Feverishly, he is fast to turn on his feet but odds are he's stammering out an apology of sorts that is getting tangled into signs drifting towards your eyes as your heart is racing in your chest, trying to tug your clothing on as quickly as you could. Noa can hear you shuffling behind him, cursing softly when you trip over your pants and he's drawn to the temptation of looking over his shoulder to peek a glance.

Barely, the Ape is able to see the fabric pulling itself over your ass and he's quick and fauxly nonchalant to look away with puffed cheeks, small raspberry and a subtle roll of his broad shoulders as if you weren't aware that he turned back to look as heat rose against your entire body.

Does not stop thinking about it and you two are drifted into an awkward state of existence together trying to ignore the moment of impact for the rest of the day, Noa unable to even look you straight in the eye without feeling that familiar tug in his navel and he needs to talk himself out of saying something stupid that could ruin his chance with you.

Blue Eyes, much like Noa, would feel frozen to the ground. He came into the nest on his hands and feet, moving on all fours was a quicker way to get the largeness of his body towards agility. First thing that the Prince sees are your boobs. Right at his line of vision, Blue Eyes comes to a slow stop and just... Gawks right at them. Subtly at first, but then it becomes more ardent as you're able to see the hackles against his shoulders rising with anticipation of seeing more as you swallowed hard, bringing your arms up to cover up.

"Bl-... Blue! I thought you were going to be gone longer! W-Was getting ready for you to come back, I'm not ready for dinne---"

The Ape is quick to shuffle towards you, his gait meaningful and each step seemed to set the ground on fire before the Prince of Apes was grasping your hands assuredly, releasing the tension you had from covering yourself and tugging them away as he mutters with one lazed hand in paced sign.

'Came back early to... surprise... you. Am... more surprised... By you.' It's hard to ignore the sudden hunger in his eyes that darkened a shade of azure and before you know it, you're on your back in the nest. "W-We'll be late---" Shuddering softly at the caress of his hands against your side, Blue Eyes only nodded and crawls his way onto you. He'll deal with being late to dinner with Caesar later. He needed you now.

Koba, in the one time that he had walked in on you getting dressed in your hut, was all his fault as much as he tried to yell at you for causing yourself indecency. Caesar made him. Caesar demanded the Bonobo come catch you for the council meeting that had already begin and begrudgingly, for his dear friend, Koba subsided against an argument, wanting nothing more than the meeting to come to an end so he could go on his way to do what he wanted with his day and found himself standing, almost hunched in on himself as you dragged your worn out bra over your bare shoulders.

Reaching backwards with impressive stretch to clip it shut that Koba found to be rather distasteful, causing a gross sensation of bile to rise in his stomach, the Ape was growling towards you, "Human... Ready?" "Fuck!" You snapped, nearly toppling over your own feet as you were still pantless, lingering now in your underwear as you didn't bother to turn towards the familiar gruff of the voice, "Ever heard of knocking!?" Your hands are grasping at your trousers and pulling them on much to the disgruntled dismay of Koba who wanted to say something jabbing about the lack of muscles that cased your thighs. They were soft and smoothed and held no purpose as they now shook and seemed unable to carry your weight.

"Why do you turn around and let me finish getting ready or are you just gonna finish your peep show?"

"Pointless," Koba narrowed his eyes when you turned your head and he was blessed with the reddening nature of your side profile and a rather delicious dip of your side-boob which made the fur against his spine shimmer as Koba bit at your Human knack for embarrassment. "Have seen... Your... Human form... many times. Koba... Hates it the more... He looks at it." "WHAT?!"

Rating (almost) every Cherry Magic iteration

Manga, Japanese Drama, Chinese Radio Drama, Japanese Drama Movie, Thai Drama, Anime

After rewatching (almost) every iteration of the story multiple times, I've compiled a list of my personal reviews for each adaptation (and the manga) and how much I would recommend them, what they each did well and what they might have lacked.

Manga:

Personal Score: 9.5/10 (only because it's still on going)

Objective Score: 9/10

Skipability: 0, you can't understand the whole story without the manga and also, you're missing out.

If you're reading this post, you probably know the plot of Cherry Magic, so I won't explain much about that. Since this is mostly to rate the adaptations in comparison to the manga, I can only emphasize how important the entirety of the manga is to understand cherry magic. Doesn't matter how many adaptations you've watched, I don't think you can truly consider yourself a fan if you don't engage with the manga. It's the only version where everything has the proper time to be fleshed out, especially in regards to Adachi, Kurosawa and their relationship. Toyota's writing as the story goes on is something to marvel at and unfortunately, the adaptations have yet to reach that far to represent it properly. The art progression is also noticeable and even if the art style puts you off at first you can see and appreciate the improvement.

Japanese Drama (2020):

Personal score: 9.5/10

Objective score: 8.5/10

Skippability: Maybe a 2-3, you can still enjoy the story without it but it's worth seeing how the drama influenced the manga.

Arguably the most popular and most successful iteration of the story, the Japanese drama of Cherry Magic deserves every bit of praise it gets. Before I get into the pros and cons, I need to contextualise the environment the jdrama was created and aired in because recent conversations lack nuance on that aspect. The Cherimaho drama was produced and aired on TvTokyo in 2020 and it was the station's second BL drama, the first being the incredible slice of life gay cooking drama, What Did You Eat Yesterday? So, wanting to replicate the success of that, the creators wanted to focus on the human drama aspect of Cherry Magic without, of course, toning down its LGBT themes. And they did exactly that. And they did that very well. The execution, while not flawless, was incredible start to end. The way they adapted the characters into a more toned down environment felt natural, and not too far off from their original characterisation. It's a visual feast and among all adaptations, it has the best and most memorable soundtrack. The strongest point of this adaptation has to be Kurosawa as well as the way more minor characters were handled and fleshed out. The progression of the relationship feels natural and they managed to adapt the manga's fast pace in a way that doesn't feel rushed on film form.

As for the weak points, it all comes down to the second half of the show, which I feel I need to give context for once again: Cherimaho drama was created when the manga was merely at volume 4 (in events, that's their first date) and Toyota had shared with the writing team her drafts for volume 5. So, after the confession, the drama had to create original plot lines which, while not bad, did feel different from the strong beginning of the show. The most complained about is the rushed handling of Tsuge and Minato's relationship, which was to be expected as they had so little interactions at that point in the manga. And, of courss, the thing the jdrama is notorious for: the lack of a kiss scene. Was it disappointing? Yes. But believe me when I say that it's literally not as a big deal when you watch the entire show. The show does not shy away from its queerness and there is nothing in their actions that could be interpreted as platonic. This poor production choice (which we can assume was implemented by someone else, tvtokyo has also removed straight kisses from adaptations for some reason and also it Was the height of covid) should not sully your experience with the show and in no way does it take away from its queerness. This version also features an asexual character as well as a mini arc for them so it's clear that the writers knew what they were doing and they were doing their best and it's so clearly conveyed in the gentleness of the show. It is also evident in the movie sequel, but more on that on its time to review.

All in all, I would say you need to experience the jdrama as it becomes a set point for the manga; the story shifts in the best way possible and it's all thanks to the jdrama and its unpredictable success.

(Though nothing beats watching it weekly during COVID)

Chinese radio drama (2022):

Personal score: 9/10

Objective score: 9/10

Skippability: Above a 6 since it's not really influential but I am not exaggerating when I say you are missing out maybe the best spin on the story thus far.

Cherry Magic's first and best foreign adaptation to date. First of all, we need to acknowledge how bananas it is for a niche yaoi manga to get a chinese radio drama because of its drama's success. Second of all, it's hilarious and incredibly romantic and the best and most creative take on the story. The localisation made for some interesting changes in the story and when it came to original plot lines, they nailed every single one. It's been a hot minute since I rewatched it but it's such a memorable piece of media. It's extremely underrated considering how accessible it is (thank you naina <3). Audio form foreign media may be hard to get into but the radio drama deserves every second of your time. Literally the only weak point I can mention for this adaptation is that it's not a visual medium and it's hard to get used to at first. But the voice acting, the character writing, the music, the manga and original plots— everything was executed near perfection.

Oh and it's just fucking hilarious. Like, extremely so.

Japanese Drama Sequel Movie (2022):

Personal score: 9/10

Objective score: 8/10

Skippability: 0 if you've watched the jdrama.

Cherimaho the Movie was announced on November 28th 2021 for a, later revealed, April 2022 release. And us international fans were able to watch it on November 8th 2022.... And yes, it was worth it! A manga loyal sequel to the jdrama, which had an original ending, was a bit hard to execute so there are points you have to suspend your belief. But this sequel was a nice last peek into the relationship of jdrama Adachi and Kurosawa and a well done farewell to the jdrama franchise. I was especially moved by the tackling of the reality of a long term gay relationship and the way the characters handled it. The movie is essentially split into two halves and both are crucial for Adachi and Kurosawa's development. If I had to mention a weak point, besides one or two scenes, it would be that I would love for certain events and character actions to be more in line with the manga but I am also aware that those changes were made to fit the characterisation already set by the Japanese Drama. Oh and the no kiss thing is still an issue somehow. But again, the rest of the story being good enough makes up for it. Still questionable production choices.

Thai Drama (2023-2024)

Personal score: 4/10

Objective score: 6/10

Skippability: 10, only recommended out of morbid curiosity.

Harsh score. What did the show get so wrong? I will admit being biased against it at first. Right after the movie had just dropped, a new adaptation is announced and almost immediately steals the spotlight. It doesn't help that it's produced by GMMTV, who, along with japanese channel MBS, I consider the most annoying BL factories (with the rare exceptions) for fans and shows alike. I also wasn't thrilled that the casting was decided on a pre-existing couple rather than which actors would fit each individual character best. But I tried to look forward to it, especially since the cast and crew insisted that this was a manga adaptation rather than a remake and that they would go beyond the plot lines the japanese drama did. I had some gripes with the jdrama in comparison to the manga so that was good to hear. After a while, they dropped a few trailers and I decided that my worries were probably for nothing and that the show seemed interesting and we produced. And it surprisingly was! For a few episodes, at least. The localisation is very well done. Adachi's living situation, his transport to work, the work environment— vastly different from the original setting but successfully adapted to Thai culture. This version is a lot more lighthearted on about everything. At first, this was a fun spin. Focusing on its comedy, since it's a strong point of the earlier story. But, as the show went on, that wasn't necessarily a good thing. The strong point of this adaptation was the first few episodes as well as the production quality. It's visually beautiful as far as settings, Tay and Jan go. The runtime being longer kind of worked in their favor, as each episode would cover more ground (with exception ep1 which managed to adapt like 15 pages into 50 minutes). Another strong point is the handling of Tsuge and Minato—although their age gap wasn't properly conveyed, the chemistry they had, even if they were a bit out of character, was fun enough. Unlike the Jdrama, the writers here had a clearer visiom of what they wanted to do with them (and they also had like 7 more volumes of content).

Unfortunately, this is as far as my praises go. The weakest point of this show is its main character. Adachi, in this show Achi, is the most unlikeable protagonist I've seen in a hot minute—and I was watching Ossans Love while this was airing. Generally, he's not even that bad ; but he's kind of run of the mill stereotypical uke archetype you'd find in those manufactured BLs, pretty opposite of what Adachi is. He goes through no character development as he begins pretty much at where Adachi ends and he's just so uninteresting to follow. The actor didn't do a great job either but to his defense, he wasn't given much to work with. Kurosawa's counterpart, Karan was way better, at least but he can't make up for the protagonist. The completely made up heterosexual ship between Fujisaki and Rokakku (Pai and Rock here) was a pain to watch especially since they tried to keep Pai's independent nature from the Jdrama (where she was canonically aroace) which just made her disinterested in Rock's advances until the very last episode where she's suddenly into him–if i wanted to watch a badly paced heterosexual couple I wouldn't be watching a BL, respectfully. But besides all that, I think this adaptation was a wasted opportunity. It clearly had budget and time. But it relied heavily on the Jdrama instead of the manga and well, that's fine for fans of the drama but promising manga accuracy and delivering an even more sanitised version of the jdrama was just a huge disappointment. Why should I relive the japanese drama? What's YOUR take on the manga?

Also to clarify rumours I've seen spread around, Toyota was not involved in the making. The japanese side that needed to approve the script was not directly reporting to Toyota because another company has the rights to distribute the Cherry Magic IP, she wasn't as involved in negotiations and stuff as people claim she was, especially considering she learned of the show's existence a few days before the general public did. The usage of AI art in the drama's promotion despite Toyota being vocally anti AI was also a point of disconnect that left a bitter taste in my mouth. But also I acknowledge that Cherry Magic Thailand exists mostly for Thai fans, probably in a similar way the 80% of my country's tv shows are remakes and honestly good for them, I'd love to have a CM remake in my culture even if it's not "perfect" and I'm sure parts I personally found confusing as changes make sense in a way I cannot understand, hence why the objective score is pretty higher than my personal score.

Anime (2024)

Personal score: 8.5/10

Objective score: 7.5/10

Skippability: 4, cute and loyal enough so it's worth checking out

The much anticipated Cherry Magic anime was something, alright. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish but it, unfortunately, has some glaringly big problems when it comes to its animation. For the runtime they were given, they were able to include much more than I thought they would and even if the pace tended to be faster than expected at times it wasn't as much of a problem; I love Cherry Magic a lot and I believe its strongest narratives begin after volume 5 or so and I'm glad we had the chance to see a little of that as well. The voice acting is definitely the greatest thing about this adaptation. In most of CM's adaptations, Kurosawa's actor tends to always stand out more but the anime for me is a bit more balanced; both Kobayashi and Suzuki are extremely talented and passionate in this. Thankfully, the same passion is also transmitted in the english dub, which is so fucking funny. A lot of people were disappointed with the last episode, as they fast forwarded some things for a grand finale but I'm willing to let it slide because at least they are self aware about the impossibility of a second season and chose to show some highlights we might not have gotten otherwise. Plus, they're making up with the movie so, we'll see! Back to the animation though, some episodes were criminal to sit through. It's sad because this treatment is likely because CM is a josei bl manga and animation projects like that tend to get the short end of the stick a Lot. That piano BGM *you know the one* was also frustrating at times. And I wish the colors popped a little more, yknow?

Honorable mention: Audio Drama (2019-)

I can't score it because I listened to it once on a bus ride and I'm not even sure I finished it. I'm sure I'll come back to it.

White Swamp (Webcomic)

Genre: BL/Psychological

This one is really short with only 7 chapters, but I still think it's a fun ride overall. There's a bit of an age gap, and the pacing is a bit fast, but it does have some twists that are pretty fun to see. I the reveal at the end was done pretty well and it's not too bad for a short dark BL.

The story starts out with Jungseon waking up to Hyunwoo cleaning up the snow on his driveway. He's surprised because it's been a long time since he's seen him and near Christmas, no less. However, this is a sad time for Jungseon given it was when his son died and his wife left him. We see the backstory of how the two met, with Jungseon going to teach the elderly in a remote village after his tragic incident. This is where he met Hyunwoo who at the time was still in school and after his grandmother died, Jungseon took him in as his son of sorts. Eventually Hyunwoo left, revealing to Jungseon that he had been studying theater and ends up as one of the actors in a play called as a lead actor in one of the plays. The two talk about their pasts together, how Hyunwoo was initially pretty abrasive towards Jungseon's adoption of him. Due to a snowstorm, Jungseon lets Hyunwoo stay for the night with Hyunwoo catching him due to Jungseon's bad leg. He ends up massaging him, leading to Jungseon remembering that Hyunwoo confessed to him and this leads to Hyunwoo kisisng him afterwards. This leads to Hyunwoo raping Jungseon only for him to wake up the next day, believing it was a dream. Sanghwo, Jungseon's editor comes to visit the two and Hyunwoo leaves unhappy. Sanghwo talks about how he always finds Hyunwoo creepy though Jungseon shuts him down. The two talk and drink for a while before Sanghwo decides to take a quick drive to get cigerettes despite Jungseon's concerns for the weather. Jungseon gets flashbacks to a car accident, leading him to be extremely traumatized and shaking, and while Jungseon is driving he ends up crashing as his brakes were cut. Jungseon, concerned and afraid for his editor tries to go after him, but is stopped by Hyunwoo who has returned. Sanghwo calls Jungseon to inform him that he's been in an accident, though tells him not to come and get him as he can get to the hospital himself. This still leaves Jungseon reeling from the experience with Hyunwoo kissing him to try to get him to calm down. After hugging it out, Hyunwoo offers to make Jungseon dinner and Junseon asks why Hyunwoo left him in the first place. Hyunwoo mentions that on the day he left, a classmate fell down the stairs and snapped his neck before revealing upfront that he was the one who killed him. He seems to have planned it as the classmate not only insulted him but also wanted to get out of town and this seems to trigger some lost memories he had when his parents died. After soul searching in Seol, Hyunwoo finds a newspaper article talking about a car accident, stating simply that it was extremely similar to a book that Jungseon had wrote himself. It's revealed that Jungseon seemed to be the one who killed Hyunwoo's parents.

Hyunwoo wants to take revenge for his parents, even stating that he was the one who cut the brakes on Sanghwo's car, though Hyunwoo gets jealous for Jungseon even mentioning anything about him. Jungseon is able to break free and run to his car, and despite his trauma starts to drive it. However, Hyunwoo gets in the way and Jungseon is unable to run him over, causing him to swerve and crash instead. After Hyunwoo catches him Jungseon apologizes for killing his parents, and even accepts death for his actions, though Hyunwoo has different plans. He gets raped inside of the car and even has to talk to Sanghwo while this is happening over the phone. After this happens, Hyunwoo tries to end his life with a shard of glass, though Jungseon is able to stop him and reciprocates his feelings out of desperation and obligation. We get a flashback to what actually caused Hyunwoo's parents to die. We see that his parents were constantly fighting, with his dad's work stress causing him to mistreat Hyunwoo in return. After his favorite toy car gets destroyed, we see that on the day of the car accident, Hyunwoo was actually the one who cut the breaks causing his parents to die though he never ends up telling this to Jungseon.

Kind of fitting that I'm writing this on Christmas Eve, but here we are. This story is pretty decent as a horror story, especially set in a more holiday like setting, though my biggest gripe with it is that it's paced really fast. Within only a couple of chapters, Hyunwoo reveals that he not only killed someone but also that he knows Jungseon killed his parents, though I do like the twist at the end that he was the one who ultimately caused his parent's death. Normally I'm not too fond of these kinds of age gaps, but I think in this context it expands on the horror aspect more, seeing that the parental love that Jungseon had for taking care of Hyunwoo turn into a twisted love that he didn't want to give away to anyone. Both of these characters have pretty bad and traumatic events in their lives, with the car accident and the death of his son being a driving force for Jungseon taking care of Hyunwoo and Hyunwoo eventually learning about how Jungseon was the one who was the one who crashed into his parent's car being good driving factors into this entire situation. It is poetic that Hyunwoo tries the cutting the breaks even twice despite not remembering his past, as if foreshadowing just what his past was really like. Hyunwoo has complicated feelings for Jungseon, because while on the one hand he clearly loves and cares about him given that he is the only proper parental figure (outside his grandmother) who really cared for him and on the other hand he feels very resentful for Jungseon not only crashing into his parent's car but also writing a story about it. The haunting part was definitely near the end where he remembers that he was the one who caused his parents death, not Jungseon, yet never tells him, leading him to forever believe that he was the reason for Hyunwoo's trauma really brings a new darkness to it. Like I said, the only big issue I have is the pacing because it could have had a couple of chapters to flesh things out more, and some parts in the middle feel very fast paced or rushed. I think it could have made a great short thriller if it was similar to how A Room Without Windows was paced.

Overall, its not a bad short thriller, especially towards the winter time. I think that it has good twists and turns and is pretty short so if you want a short yandere story to read, this one is a good one to get through.

It's december already which just feels insane to me. Christmas is coming which makes me happy but this year went by too fast. Anyway as usual, spoilers and opinions below, read at your own risk.

QL - Currently Watching

🇹🇭 Caged Again [4/10] - Junior is one of my favourite characters. He never learned to deceive so he just says what he feels like it's the most natural thing. And his confidence and optimism are contagious. I love him. And Sun is just smitten and terrible at hiding it so it's a good thing Junior is completely clueless about these things. I'm loving Jodd and Jeng and since they are also animals, I think we're getting more about them next episode. I can't wait. 🇹🇭 Fourever You [9/16] - I am so incredibly bored. They are stretching these two pairs for no reason. They should have just given us the four pairs in 16 eps cause this is torture. 🇯🇵Fragrance You Inherit [3/8] - It's lovely. I love Sakura. I really liked the scene in the restaurant. Sakura talking about being a single mom and Mone being supportive brought tears to my eyes. It was a beautiful moment. I love the relationship between the moms and the kids and I'm curious to see how Toki will react, if he in fact doesn't know already. It's also interesting to think about what exactly parents owe their kids or not, specially regarding something like that. Fansubs being provided by @isaksbestpillow. Thank you🧡 🇯🇵Love in the Air Koi [5/10] - The pacing is so much better here. I agree with @lurkingshan here and the kidnappings will probably be combined somehow. I like the second couple a bit better here than the thai version, but I'm still not the biggest fan of this storyline. Although Fuma is better than Prapai.

🇯🇵 Love is a Poison [11/12] - Shiba is so in love. I always believed, just like Shan, that Haruto was coming back, but it was painful watching Shiba hurt. Only one episode left where they will defeat the bad guy and live happily ever after. I will not accept anything else. 🇯🇵Miseinen [4/11] - Well at least they are 'friends' now. I can't with these two. That ice cream scene was insane and it's burned into my brain. This is a great adaptation and I need all the episodes like right now.

🇹🇭 Perfect 10 Liners [6/24] - PondSand are everything to me basically. I'm so over ArcArm and I need the next couple stat. It looks like this will be another parade of guest stars which is kinda fun and next week Sea will make an appearance along with the always fun jealousy plot which hopefully will end with them being boyfriends so we can move on to the next couple.

🇹🇼 See Your Love [7/13] - The contraste between the couples is hilarious to me. The sign language scenes were the cutest and they are adorable. And this must be a record number of the 'falling into each other's arms and almost kissing but not' trope. No one is that clumsy. The sides are bonkers.

🇹🇭 Spare Me Your Mercy [1/8] - Strong start. I'm reserving judgement but I like the setting a lot, so many MoD vibes, and I like this pair. They can act.

🇹🇭 The Heart Killers [2/12] - I'm watching quietly.

🇹🇭 Your Sky [3/12] - This might be too cute. Teerak is adorably clueless and Fah is so smitten. He came up with that nickname so fast, it's almost as if he's been calling him that in his head for a while. Also, the friend group is amazing at running interference. That scene in the lift was great. And I love the scenes with the Teerak and Babe.

🇨🇳 Blue Canvas of Youthful Days - Great until episode 10. Unearned and unbelievable ending. Mostly forgiven because China. 🇰🇷🇹🇭 Eccentric Romance - What did I watch? was it bl? was it a crime drama? No idea, but it was not good.

🇹🇭 Every You, Every Me - Rushed ending but I really liked the bl inside the bl. I wanna see these two again.

🇹🇭 Jack & Joker - YinWar. On my screen. In 2024. Even if it was bad, it was good.

🇹🇭 Kidnap - Proof that Ohm will pretty much get me to watch anything.

🇰🇷 Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo - Pain and snow and happy endings.

🇰🇷 Love in the Big City - As close to perfection as anything I ever watched. Young will stay with me forever.

I will say, Kidnap is turning out to be as pulpy as I was initially hoping it would be.

It's fast-paced in a way that BL rarely is—our hero finds himself in a new predicament every week, struggling to balance his situational needs with his moral code. He's fighting off loan sharks, his brother has health issues, he's struggling with a kidnapping that he's not emotionally committed to, he's falling for his target, he's getting involved with the mafia, and soon enough, the police will be on his tail.

It may not be as heavily sexual as some pulp can be, but Kidnap bears markers of erotic and romantic pulp stories—it's tinged with situational bondage, we have a sadistic villain, and its romance is built on a contrast of high danger and emotional tenderness. As a romantic lead, Min is both strong and vulnerable, while Q plays a "damsel in distress" who is smart, snarky, and more capable than he seems.

Because I'm not fluent in Thai, I'm not comfortable speaking to the wittiness or snappiness of the dialogue, but the show is funny, and the comedy brings a levity that such a fast-paced story needs. Not all shows dealing with heavy topics like loan sharks or mafia need a lighthearted or silly aspect, and often this can be out of place, but when you are moving as quickly as Kidnap, those heavier elements can feel like a constant barrage.

I won't declare that the show was for-sure going for a pulp feeling, but it certainly bears the markers of a lot of pulp literature. Pulp weeklies (which, incidentally, made a lot of their money off of advertisements x), needed stories that would keep their readers coming back week after week. How will Min get out of this predicament now?

Overall, I hope that people can take Kidnap as it is without judging it for failing to achieve something that it's not trying to accomplish. Pulp may not be for everyone, and that's fine. It's certainly not high-brow literature, it was made to be accessible to the masses, but many great writers got their start in pulp, and the pulp era had a lasting impact on modern storytelling. Personally, I tend to really love things with strong pulp influences, so I am being well fed by Kidnap. Maybe that will change in the future, but so far I have enjoyed each episode more than the last.

Suppose I haven't watched much BL to be fair but sort of surprised how Twilight Out of Focus went there on the third episode. Every pairing takes relationships at their own pace, but that was fast.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Honestly, 3 are neck & necking for top position! They are all so good in different ways. But The Sign had me hooting with laughter this week, so it scooped #1.

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 4 of 10 - This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, paranormal, fated mates, mystery, suspense, slasher, and horror. It’s the king of genre mash-up chaos. I have no idea what I’m watching but I’m ON this ride. Is it a roller coaster? Is it a haunted house? Is it a twirl & hurl? Is there candy floss? Am I even tall enough? Who tf cares. All through the second scene, I was laughing. It was legit funny. Billy has great comedic timing. Guess he’s not just a pretty face.

Everyone should be watching this. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it.

Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 6 of 12 -  Yech. August may be one of GMMTV’s least likable characters ever (and that is saying something). Meanwhile, MOAR language play! They spoiling me!

Ep 6 so that kiss was right on schedule. I’m looking forward to the boyfriend eps before doom & pain in the new year. Carry on GMMTV. 

Speaking of...

Cherry Magic (Sat YouTube) ep 2 of 12 - Oh they’re great. It’s great. It’s paced oddly, moving quickly through most of the key scenes of the original JBL in these first 2 eps. I think it’s intending to encompass more of the manga series than that one did. Which is good, cause that will get us all the way to The Library Kiss (TM). It's the best kiss in the manga. I also like the sides in this show (better than the JBL version). 

My Dear Gangster Oppa (Thurs iQIYI) ep 8fin - What a lovely slightly unhinged little show. Tew, can we talk? Un-ironic suspenders, that takes courage. Also, the revolver was a crazy gun choice. 

Final thoughts:

This show is just as ridiculous as its title. About a gaymer who falls in love with one of his in-game teammates, who just happens to be a IRL gangster. A real gangster, the kind that actually kills people regularly. The lead pair is doing their best with a ridiculous story and shoddy script, but I enjoyed it. Although I was grateful it wasn’t very long, what we got was oddly satisfying if, frankly, a little bit silly. Recommended. 8/10 

That said, what's important about this BL is not the show, but the production and style. Let me explain... no, too much, let me sum up.

This is a chimera BL. Regarding characters: it has Japan's style otaku + Korea's style gangster + Thailand's style friendship group. It used Thai talent + Korean money (Kakao) & IP (adapted from a manwha) but aired on a Chinese channel globally (iQIYI). I'm delighted by the eclectic insanity of this production and truly doubt that any other genre but BL could ever produce like this. It's like diplomat's BL and it's the great wonder of our age that it happened at all. This BL deserves its place in the history books on production alone, even if that place is only in the footnotes. A remarkable little monster.

For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - The sides are… messy. Using the same actor for the old bf is… odd. But in the end, this show leaves me smiling. Which means, I like it despite myself. 

Bake Me Please (Mon Gaga) ep 4 of 6 - It's decent. It’s basically what I wanted Antique Bakery to be when I first watched that way back when (not to mention Bite Me). But there’s been so much BL since then that, for some reason, this is falling flat. I think it’s moving too fast for a Thai series. Although, say what you like, Ohm has to be one of the best soft kissers in the industry. He's just good at mouth tenderness.

Ugh, that doesn't sound right. But you know what I mean.

Twins the series (Fri GaGa) ep 7 of 10 - I love how First is so upset when Sprite starts chatting and being nice to Koh. Sprite is just a sweet easy-going likable boy. I enjoy Sprite as a main character, he’s a bubbly little communicator. And they had a cute kiss.  

Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 5 of 14 - Because there was more Alan and Jeff and they were more key to the plot I was more into this ep. I do compare it to green smoothie down the pants in the Trash Watch.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 3 of 12 - Look OffGun are truly great. But I’m just not sure we need them in BL anymore. That said, it’s nice to see Off as "the one with the crush" for a change. Also, this show is only good when OffGun are on screen together, otherwise it kinda, well, sucks.

Night Dream (Sat YT) ep 1 of 6 - Cafe setting featuring a cook and a writer. *Seems awfully familiar.* Except these two are exes and this is a reunion romance. It’s stiff and very pulp but not bad (no crap sound effects) and I am a sucker for a reunion romance. That said, Rookie Thailand is not to be trusted, proceed with caution.

Absolute Zero (Weds iQIYI) ep 12fin - I'm grateful this is over. It was tense but for the wrong reasons - sadness and confusion. This final episode was fine, but that’s because it was mostly them being together + flashbacks. Plus all the familiar actor faces of the grown-up friends (hi, Karn my lovely, still stunning I see). But 2 of 12 episodes is not enough for the 10 of suffering and confusion that came before.

In conclusion:

A man is killed on his 10th anniversary resulting in a time paradox, for which the only solution is him never meeting his childhood sweetheart until later in life. Both lovers cycle back to the past at different ages, so that they each become their own 1st & 2nd great loves, but every time it ends in pain, until each also endures 10 years of separation. Finally it gets fixed, but leaves them with multiple memories of time's failures like temporal PTSD, and everyone around them has chronic deja vu. Me? I got both. This is one of those BLs that is high-quality with great acting but poor story. If you like your BL dwelling, maudlin, and tense due to angst and suffering, then you might enjoy this. But I just regret it, 6/10. Recommended only if you like confusing time travel emo pain.

In which case, just watch Tokyo in April is... instead. Give over Thailand, Japan does it better.

Middleman’s Love (Fri YT & iQIYI ep 6 of 8 - While our main couple isn’t working for me... the side couple isn’t working for me either. I really wanted to give LeoTai a chance, this is the 3rd show I’ve seen them in, and still nope. I like Jade a lot more when he’s sad. He’s a much more pleasant screen experience depressed. I would like him to stay hurt for a couple of eps, just so I can enjoy this show a tiny bit more. But then he just goes unhinged again. Argh. I just don’t like it. 

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) Pisces of Me ep 17 of 24 - Codependent boyfriends in middle school planning for high school dealing with stuff. Including other boys being into them. 

Playboyy (Thurs Gaga) 5 of 14 eps - Dear Playboyy, it's not you, it’s me… I hate you. You’re about as deep (and as palatable) as a shot glass of cum. While I'm sure you’re someone’s kink, you're my weakest link. Goodbye. DNF

VIP Only (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 5 of 10 - It’s cute but I don’t think BL in this short format is Taiwan’s strength these days. And this is quite slow and dull. Perhaps they should have whacked it down to 6 eps, not 10.

Sahara-sensei to Toki-kun (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 3 of 8 - This is one of those JBLs that I should like on paper but is failing me. The drag bit was ridiculous but handled gently. The kiss was… well… something wasn’t it? It’s all very odd. I like the photographer cutie character. 

It's Airing But...

The Whisperer (Sun ????) 10 eps - Thai horror BL that ALSO involves cheating (what joy is mine). I don't think even the perfect single dimple can motivate me to watch. Word is... it's terrible.

7 Days Before Valentine (Weds WeTV) 10 eps - Giving me Luminous Solution vibes. I'm waiting to binge if it's safe.

Beyond The Star (Weds iQIYI) 8 eps - House of Stars meets Boyband. I was NOT impressed with ep 1. Been told I shouldn't bother.

What Did You Eat Yesterday Season 2 AKA Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2 (Japan Gaga) 10 eps - I find this series more fun to binge, so I'm waiting until after it completes its run next week.

Dear Kitakyushu (Thai/Japan movie) in theaters in country only, I know nothing about distribution.

Behind the Shadows (Korea movie) this is a historical I was interested in, but I've been told they kill the gay so I'm OUT.

I just watched 4 Minutes episodes 2 and 3 back-to-back...

...and I noticed something interesting about the NC scenes in the first three episodes.

They're not that "sexy". In fact, it feels like they're not supposed to be sexy.

The purpose of these scenes is not to be hot fan service eye candy whatever no the purpose is to further the plot or provide information about characters' personality, mental/emotional state and dynamics between characters.

They're something to analyze and pick apart and base entire theories on, not something pretty to look at.

Idk how to put this but they're filmed and edited in a way that makes me go "oh wow that's a bit much - very fast paced and unsatisfying" and I'm 99% that's exactly what they're trying to evoke.

I mean it was pretty obvious early on that this show wouldn't be for pwp enjoyers or romcom fans but still I find this very interesting from a BL genre standpoint.
