Both of our mains in Jack & Joker are competent but exceedingly naïve in different ways; Jack thinks if he keeps trying to do good the right way the world will work out for him despite how unfair he knows it to be, and Joke thinks if he does good even by illegal means his efforts will make a positive difference and win his parents' respect despite knowing how they would disapprove of his means. And both of their efforts have blown up in their faces by the end of the first episode.

Hi!!! Your posts are always amazing and I have so many bookmarked because you create the best little collections. Anyway, I am in a big BL rut right now and I can't seem to get into anything. Any fast-paced, recs that can bring me out of my slump? Thanks so so much :)
Oooo, fast paced is pretty subjective lemme think...
Imma got with the narrative sense of the word pacing (rather than just an in-your-face fast-moving plot, although that too,) so: good tension, craft, and narrative. Here's my pulls - I went broad and into the well, in case you had seen some recent stuff.
10 Fast-Paced BLs to Pull You Out of a Slump
(I'm assuming you have seen KinnPorsche)
I did a quick pitch for each cause I'm drunk so maybe they're funny, all spelling errors are my own and the result of growing up in 3 different English speaking nations and 2 non-English ones.
Someone wanted more elevator pitches a while ago, here ya go!
Our Dating Sim - nerds in love, reunion, deadlines, gaming, teasing, pining tiny idiots, ADORABLE
2. Semantic Error - you cannot be a BL fan and not have watched this, the ultimate enemies to lovers, also the prettiest
3. To My Star - neurotic actor (actual puppy), grumpy chef, sparks, cooking lessons, LOVE!
4. We Best Love - defines fast paced in romance, literally when asked why his character fell in love so fast Yu said, "well I only had one 20 minute episode." Yet... we BELIEVED IT.
5. HIStory 2: Crossing the Line - it's a perfect sports romance, don't bother me with trifles
6. Not Me - also how do you say antidisestablishmentarianism in Thai? + hot boys kissing who probably shouldn't be and convoluted soap opera identical twins plot... someone at GMMTV thought it made sense, we just here for the tattoos and the the Pride scene
7. The Eighth Sense - who let Korea be this angsty? SO MUCH TENSION.
8. Unintentional Love Story - omg the plot, forced into a totally understandable betrayal, falling in love despite himself, put into a corner he can't get out of, the AGONY, the eyes EMOTING at us in PAIN
9. HIStory 3: Trapped - hot cop falls in love with hotter mafia boss he is chasing for MURDER (bonus weirdly domesticated switch-blade wielding hit-man obsessed with geeky police tech support - COME ON)
10. Long Time No See - assassins, cat fishing, either side of a turf war, HOT sex scenes then even hotter beating the shit out of each other and kissing while COVERED IN BLOOD (this came from KOREA?)
There.
All kinds of flavors.
One of them just HAS to work!
If not, you could go for shorts. Try Strongberry:

maybe it doesn't account for much considering i'm a very casual viewer - in fact, even calling myself a viewer is generous - but the finale of hidden agenda really felt so mismatched with the rest of the series in a lot of different aspects. also appreciate what it did in highlighting tense family dynamics but it left a lot to be desired
#hidden agenda#thai bl#thoughts#i will say#what i mean when i say i'm not really a viewer is i truly did not watch any episode the whole way through#i just skip/fast forward through its a bad habit of mine#though also i think that says a lot about the pacing of the series if i can do that so idk

Mine.
Pairing: Daryl x Reader
Era: Commonwealth
Summary: Daryl indulges in one of your kinks.
Warnings: Poorly written smut, p in v, swearing, knives, choking
Word count: 1k (ish)
A/N: This is my first time writing smut so I am very scared LOL. The first fic you post on tumblr being smut can be very nerve-wracking. Just had Daryl indulging my knife kink rattling around in my brain and I got inspired.
~~~~~
“Shut th' fuck up, slut.”
A hand was pressed down onto your mouth as a growl exited his, while the other grasped both your wrists and held them above your head. Daryl's length was moving back and forth through your walls at a dizzying pace while your eyes rolled into the back of your head in pure bliss. Though your eyes were now wide open and staring directly at the redneck on top of you because of his previous comment. Your breath hitched and you nodded your head fervently.
The hand that was previously pressed onto your mouth moved down to squeeze your throat, all while continuing to pound into you, causing a whine to crawl out of you, your mouth still closed.
“Tryin’ to stay quiet for me like tha'. Good fuckin’ girl.”
The mix of degradations and praise combined with the added pressure increasing on your throat had your head spinning and a knot building in your lower stomach. “Who do you fuckin’ belong to? Who is it, huh?” Daryl purposefully leaned down to growl against your ear, knowing each and every one of your turn ons. The mix of pain and pleasure was too much for your brain to handle, not being able to think a single thought, let alone a coherent sentence. So instead of answering, you gave a high-pitched moan in response, drool dripping down the corner of your mouth and onto your chest.
He smirked. He fucking smirked, and somehow quickened the pace.
Daryl gave a raspy grunt in disapproval and gripped your chin that was previously on your throat, forcing you to look at him directly. “Didn't hear ya, slut. Who d'ya belong to?”
You snapped out of your haze, not wanting to disappoint nor disobey him. “Y- … You.” You struggled to stutter out in between your fast breaths.
“That's.” Thrust. “Fuckin’.” Thrust. “Right.” Thrust.
He slowed his thrusts down to a lazy pace before stopping completely, earning a dramatic whine from the depths of your soul when you felt him slip out of you. “Dar!” You dragged in an annoyed tone, Daryl already stepping off the bed and onto the carpet. He simply chuckled lightly and rolled his eyes.
“Relax. Wanna try somethin'.”
He grabbed something from off of the shared dresser you had on the other side of the room, making sure you didn't see what it was and hid it behind his back. Slowly, he walked back to the bed and got in a sitting position, making direct eye contact the whole time, building anticipation. “C'mon over and ride me, but don't face me.”
Your brows furrowed in confusion, but you did as you were told, crawling on your hands and knees to the middle of the bed where Daryl now was, and gently eased yourself back onto his cock, bouncing slowly. “What's this about, Dar?” You questioned, your breath already beginning to quicken.
“You'll see. Just keep ridin', sunshine.” Once again, albeit confused, did as you were told, already getting comfortable with the position, letting small moans slip out, all while Daryl rubbed your hip with his left hand and still holding that unknown something in his right.
Immediately after those words left your mouth, his long, sharp, hunting knife met with the base of your throat, while his other free hand gripped your hair and tilted your head back, exposing even more of the soft flesh. And he was pushing on it, increasing the pressure with every thrust. He's went out hunting with that knife before you two even met, so you had no doubt he knew what he was doing, and that thought somehow turned you on more than you already were. He swiped it slightly along your clavicle, almost drawing blood.
“You ready, baby?”
Even while you were experiencing the bliss of riding his cock over and over, that elicited a chuckle from you. Why was he being so secretive? “For what, babe?”
Your mouth went slack. No noise exited you besides your exaggerated breathing and your, frankly, embarrassing loud moans.
“There it is. You're such a fuckin’ slut. My slut. Makin' you feel so good, huh?”
All your senses were heightened. You were on cloud nine and barely even heard what he said besides registering his low, raspy, growling. Daryl was making you a wet, blubbering mess, and he only wished he could see what those eyes looked like rolled in the back of your head. So he resorted to the voice again. (He figured out about that kink the very first night you spent with each other. “You're really obvious, y'know that?”)
“Use ya words, bitch. Are you mah slut ere not?” Daryl spoke lowly but with assertion, his accent becoming more and more noticeable.
“Yes! Yes! Oh fuck, yes!” You responded emphatically, not only answering his question, but letting him know how good he's making you feel.
“You gonna cum all over this cock for me, sunshine?”
“Fuck, yes. Yes, I will. Oh fuck…” You're surprised you even answered his question with the state you were in, but you did, albeit breathlessly. Daryl chuckled and put a bit more pressure on your throat, moving up to the middle this time.
The knot in your lower stomach got tighter and tighter, and with a couple thrusts to your sweet spot while rasping sweet nothings in your ear, you saw white, feeling your cunt drip with Daryl's cum down onto your thighs and roll down onto his. You almost collapsed forward, but you felt a pair of strong arms grip your midsection before throwing the knife away from the two of you with a flick of his wrist.
Daryl placed gentle kisses on the side of your neck and then your temple. He hugged you from behind, his cock still buried within you.
“Hey Dar?” He slowly eased your back up against his firm chest, making it easier for him to lock eyes with you.
“Hm?” He purred.
~~~~~
“Can you do that again sometime?” You asked softly in between trying to catch your breath. He chuckled once again and punctuated it with a sweet, open-mouthed kiss to the lips.
“Hell yeah, I will.”
God. I NEED HIM.

Lights! ☆ Camera!!☆ Action!!!☆
✰ Starring ✰ Miguel O'Hara
The live video you will be participating in contains:
Camboy/Streamer Miguel, voyeurism, Oral sex, biting, dirty talk, Miguel is Shameless, Dom!Miguel, exhibitionism, a small amount of spanking, Mami, and other pet names being used.
Viewer discretion is advised.
Enjoy the show.
Scene one!! 🎬 Look who's here
You peered into the cracked door of your boyfriend's streaming room. His hand was pumping his fully erect cock as he murmured your name. The camera was in front of him with the chat blowing up. You would be lying if you said it was causing your pussy to ache. He was so fucking pretty, and so fucking huge. The camera only showed from his neck down. You know if they saw his face they'd be absolutely mesmerized by it. As you peered further into the room by some miraculous change you managed to trip stumbling into the room. Miguel's head snapped to you, and a sly smirk appeared on his face.
"Ah...Chat it seems my lovely girlfriend decided to visit me what should I do..?" He asked already knowing what he planned to do.
They wanted him to eat that precious pussy of yours. They didn't have to tell him twice.
═════════ ⋆★⋆═════════
Scene two!! 🎬 Spread for the camera
You were now naked as you sat on Miguel's lap his hands on your thighs. You swear you'd be embarrassed if you didn't feel his pulsing length touching you.
"Spread those pretty legs for me, Mami. Show them that pretty pussy of yours~" Miguel whispered in your ear.
His voice was like a drug, and you couldn't get enough of it. You obediently spread your legs in front of the camera. Miguel made sure your face stayed out of the camera. Your dripping and needy cunt was on display to all the people on the stream, but you didn't care. All you cared about was the sweet nothings and kisses Miguel was leaving on your neck.
"Mi amor...you ready?" He asks quietly.
You nod as the chat continues to go wild.
"Good." He grinned.
═════════ ⋆★⋆═════════
Scene three!! 🎬 Let me taste you
"Oh god- R-right there-" you slurred out as Miguel's tongue maneuvered around your needy cunt.
You were hovering over his face until..you felt one of his hands hit your thigh. Not too hard but hard enough for you to sit down. He wanted you to sit, not hover. The mask he had on to cover the upper half of his face occasionally bumped your clit along with his nose. You swear he'd be down there if he could. You try to take your weight off of him hovering. You could see the chat just barely through your teary eyes.
'Sit down all the way!!'
You hovered over Miguel until you felt his claws sharply graze your skin before his hand met your ass. You could've sworn the sound echoed through the room. You continue to hover over him with your ass aching from when he hit it.
"Sit down." He said...no demanded.
You whined quietly and gently sat your weight down.
He was down there for what felt like an eternity. You finally released into his mouth you moaned as he lapped your juices.
They climb off of him and sit up as you wipe his face. He looks at the chat and it was very obvious what they were saying.
'Fuck her already!!'
'Ruin that pussy!!'
Miguel chuckled deeply as his hand rested on your thigh. He was about to oblige but then he saw your face. That beautiful face screamed 'fuck me.' You stared at him your hand trailing to his cock. You wanted to fuck him. No cameras. no mask. You wanted him to leave you a moaning mess. The chat is still raving telling him to fuck you, but his attention was so caught on you he didn't even care.
═════════ ⋆★⋆═════════
Scene fo- CUT THE CAMERAS?! 🎬
"Ah- S-slow down-!" You moaned.
Miguel did just what you wanted he cut off the camera, and went directly to fuck you.
His pace was fast and deep as your nails penetrate the pillow. His hands held your hips as he pushed himself as deep as he could go. His teeth sunk into your skin causing a sharp feeling on your shoulder. You felt him lick the spot he bit. He drew blood, and it was obvious. If his mouth wasn't kissing sucking or biting you he was spewing out praises and compliments that made your heart flutter.
"Mami, you feel so good." He said as his brutal pace never once stopped.
You felt him pull out and wonder why he did.
"Why did you p-" Before you could finish he had flipped you over legs held open.
"Need to see your face." He said. His eyes looked like an animal ready to devour its prey.
He pushes himself back into you slowly. Even though you just took him inside moments ago your body could never get used to how big he was. His hands hold your legs open as he pounds into you at that brutal pace again. Your back is arching off of the bed as he practically punishes your pussy. All you could hear was his grunts and praise and you moaned. The sound of your body and his connecting every time he thrust into you was drowned out by your moans.
"S-slow down Miguel-!" You stuttered out between moans.
"You're all fucking mine. All mine and you feel so fuckin' good." He practically growled.
You felt that familiar knot in your stomach. The one that told you that you were at your limit. You babble senseless telling Miguel your about to cum.
"Cum for me, Mi amor." He breathed out between his brutal attacks on your poor pussy.
That's all he had to say as your body reaches that euphoric state that Miguel always managed to make your body climb to. He continued to fuck you through that heaven-sent feeling. You continue to babble senseless as you came on his dick. His pace started to get sloppy and the harsh pace and rhythm he had was disappearing. He was about to cum. You were tightening around from you orgasm and it was too much for him to bare.
"You want me to fill you up? Fill up that pretty pussy? Hmm?" He questioned.
"Yes-!" You slurred out too drunk on his dick to say anything other than yes.
You felt his warm seed fill your body. He groans his grip around your waist tightening. He didn't pull out he just laid on your chest.
"I can't do any more streams with you or they're all going to end early." He mumbled.
You let out a exhausted laugh and run your fingers through his hair.
"We'll see about that."

sunday
"go~od girl," sunday purrs, stroking your hair. "taking me so good... mm, yes, right there..."
he guides you in bobbing your head up and down his dick. you kneel before him, your eyes watery with tears each time his tip nudges the back of your throat.
"faster now, yeah? you can take it, i know you can..." he holds your head, gently wiping away the tears with a thumb, then starts thrusting.
you whine and whimper, struggling on instinct, which only serves to please sunday more. he throws his head back, his wings fluttering in pleasure, faster and faster.
"'m gonna cum, angel, so good, you're so go- ah-"
his hips jerk up, forcing his tip into your throat and spilling his hot seed into your mouth. your nose fills with his scent and you can't help but moan around him, lashes fluttering.
you feel him go soft, panting. sunday lets go of your head and pulls out, and you swallow obediently without him telling you to.
"good girl," he whispers, pulling you up onto his lap. "i'll give you a reward..."
aventurine
"trust me," he murmurs in your ear. he blows warm breath over the sensitive flesh behind your ear, purring when you gasp out a moan. "good... just like that."
you can't see him and every nerve ending sparkles because of it. you're tense with anticipation, hearing the sheets rustle and the bed shift, but you can't see him, can't touch him with your hands bound behind your back.
"ven," you plea, though you're not sure what you're pleading for.
he shushes you, kissing the back of your neck, trailing featherlight kisses all the way down your spine, catching you by your hips when he bites down and you lurch forward.
"behave," he purrs teasingly, and you can feel the cool roughness of his gloves spread your inner lips with a wet sound. "aww, did someone miss me?"
you brace your elbows against the pillow, biting back a sound of pleasure as his tip nudges you open, then turn back in confusion when he stops.
long fingers catch your jaw, turning your head forward and pressing onto your tongue so your mouth opens.
"be good for me," he coos. "i want to hear you, darling, every sound... mmmh... like that..."
he slides in a little more. your only warning is hearing his breathing, before he slams into you, sheathing himself fully.
"ven!" a cry of his name isn't enough to cover up his shuddering breath.
"good girl," he sighs. "such pretty sounds for me..."
blade
even praising you he manages to be mean and condescending. your eyes are filled with tears, but not because of his words; you're overstimulated, exhausted, and blade shows no signs of letting up.
"sweet thing," he coos, brushing away a tear with his thumb. "you can take it, hm? just cum one more time. one more."
he fucks you steadily, not fast enough for you to cum but certainly enough for you to feel every inch of his throbbing, hot dick.
"bl~ade," you moan brokenly. "blade- ah, mmph-"
"sweetheart." he rubs a finger over your bruised lips, letting you taste yourself. "use your words."
"please, blade, fuck me- ah, fuck, fuck, fuck-"
he must have been waiting for you to say just that, because he instantly picks up the pace, thrusting twice as quickly as before. you're left babbling nonsense again, chanting words every time he thrusts into you and kisses your sensitive, gummy spot.

Apes walking in on you changing? We love a silly trope.
Caesar would just stare at your backside and say absolutely nothing upon entry of the nest. Intentionally, the Ape King knows what you look like bare, your shoulders nice to look at from a standing position as Caesar was often used to seeing them when you were on your hands and knees or he was spotted glances from under your jacket or shirt.
It's one of his favorite things to spectate in the times where you dress in front of him after mating, the dips and curves he was able to see in full splendor when your body was further away. Until you are turning around and yelping, knees drawing themselves together as you try to stagger your clothing in your hands to keep yourself shielded with a yap, "Caesar! Wh-when did you co-come in?!"
Only then would he look away noting the amused embarrassment that you had towards being naked in front of him as if it were the first time, turning so his broad back was pointed towards you.
There was no way to deny the scent of your arousal that hits him the moment that his green gaze flittered down and got a glimpse of your chest before you managed to cover it up with your tangled up shirt. Caesar huffs at your commanded gaze, rolling his neck in minor disappointment as you utter under your breath, "Seriously, how long were you standing there?" "Long... enough to see your---" "CAESAR!"
Noa would immediately feel frozen upon seeing any of your flesh that he wasn't meant to see in that moment, regardless of if you have mated or not. Most likely stunned at the first moment, he'd give you a long catering gaze from top to bottom before turning away as you stammer, trying to bring whatever you could to cover yourself while heat eradicated your cheeks, all the way up to your ears. "T-Turn around!" You squeak, bringing an animal pelt to cover your front side that Noa's eyes were blessed with upon entry.
Feverishly, he is fast to turn on his feet but odds are he's stammering out an apology of sorts that is getting tangled into signs drifting towards your eyes as your heart is racing in your chest, trying to tug your clothing on as quickly as you could. Noa can hear you shuffling behind him, cursing softly when you trip over your pants and he's drawn to the temptation of looking over his shoulder to peek a glance.
Barely, the Ape is able to see the fabric pulling itself over your ass and he's quick and fauxly nonchalant to look away with puffed cheeks, small raspberry and a subtle roll of his broad shoulders as if you weren't aware that he turned back to look as heat rose against your entire body.
Does not stop thinking about it and you two are drifted into an awkward state of existence together trying to ignore the moment of impact for the rest of the day, Noa unable to even look you straight in the eye without feeling that familiar tug in his navel and he needs to talk himself out of saying something stupid that could ruin his chance with you.
Blue Eyes, much like Noa, would feel frozen to the ground. He came into the nest on his hands and feet, moving on all fours was a quicker way to get the largeness of his body towards agility. First thing that the Prince sees are your boobs. Right at his line of vision, Blue Eyes comes to a slow stop and just... Gawks right at them. Subtly at first, but then it becomes more ardent as you're able to see the hackles against his shoulders rising with anticipation of seeing more as you swallowed hard, bringing your arms up to cover up.
"Bl-... Blue! I thought you were going to be gone longer! W-Was getting ready for you to come back, I'm not ready for dinne---"
The Ape is quick to shuffle towards you, his gait meaningful and each step seemed to set the ground on fire before the Prince of Apes was grasping your hands assuredly, releasing the tension you had from covering yourself and tugging them away as he mutters with one lazed hand in paced sign.
'Came back early to... surprise... you. Am... more surprised... By you.' It's hard to ignore the sudden hunger in his eyes that darkened a shade of azure and before you know it, you're on your back in the nest. "W-We'll be late---" Shuddering softly at the caress of his hands against your side, Blue Eyes only nodded and crawls his way onto you. He'll deal with being late to dinner with Caesar later. He needed you now.
Koba, in the one time that he had walked in on you getting dressed in your hut, was all his fault as much as he tried to yell at you for causing yourself indecency. Caesar made him. Caesar demanded the Bonobo come catch you for the council meeting that had already begin and begrudgingly, for his dear friend, Koba subsided against an argument, wanting nothing more than the meeting to come to an end so he could go on his way to do what he wanted with his day and found himself standing, almost hunched in on himself as you dragged your worn out bra over your bare shoulders.
Reaching backwards with impressive stretch to clip it shut that Koba found to be rather distasteful, causing a gross sensation of bile to rise in his stomach, the Ape was growling towards you, "Human... Ready?" "Fuck!" You snapped, nearly toppling over your own feet as you were still pantless, lingering now in your underwear as you didn't bother to turn towards the familiar gruff of the voice, "Ever heard of knocking!?" Your hands are grasping at your trousers and pulling them on much to the disgruntled dismay of Koba who wanted to say something jabbing about the lack of muscles that cased your thighs. They were soft and smoothed and held no purpose as they now shook and seemed unable to carry your weight.
"Why do you turn around and let me finish getting ready or are you just gonna finish your peep show?"
"Pointless," Koba narrowed his eyes when you turned your head and he was blessed with the reddening nature of your side profile and a rather delicious dip of your side-boob which made the fur against his spine shimmer as Koba bit at your Human knack for embarrassment. "Have seen... Your... Human form... many times. Koba... Hates it the more... He looks at it." "WHAT?!"

Rating (almost) every Cherry Magic iteration
Manga, Japanese Drama, Chinese Radio Drama, Japanese Drama Movie, Thai Drama, Anime
After rewatching (almost) every iteration of the story multiple times, I've compiled a list of my personal reviews for each adaptation (and the manga) and how much I would recommend them, what they each did well and what they might have lacked.
Manga:
Personal Score: 9.5/10 (only because it's still on going)
Objective Score: 9/10
Skipability: 0, you can't understand the whole story without the manga and also, you're missing out.
If you're reading this post, you probably know the plot of Cherry Magic, so I won't explain much about that. Since this is mostly to rate the adaptations in comparison to the manga, I can only emphasize how important the entirety of the manga is to understand cherry magic. Doesn't matter how many adaptations you've watched, I don't think you can truly consider yourself a fan if you don't engage with the manga. It's the only version where everything has the proper time to be fleshed out, especially in regards to Adachi, Kurosawa and their relationship. Toyota's writing as the story goes on is something to marvel at and unfortunately, the adaptations have yet to reach that far to represent it properly. The art progression is also noticeable and even if the art style puts you off at first you can see and appreciate the improvement.
Japanese Drama (2020):
Personal score: 9.5/10
Objective score: 8.5/10
Skippability: Maybe a 2-3, you can still enjoy the story without it but it's worth seeing how the drama influenced the manga.
Arguably the most popular and most successful iteration of the story, the Japanese drama of Cherry Magic deserves every bit of praise it gets. Before I get into the pros and cons, I need to contextualise the environment the jdrama was created and aired in because recent conversations lack nuance on that aspect. The Cherimaho drama was produced and aired on TvTokyo in 2020 and it was the station's second BL drama, the first being the incredible slice of life gay cooking drama, What Did You Eat Yesterday? So, wanting to replicate the success of that, the creators wanted to focus on the human drama aspect of Cherry Magic without, of course, toning down its LGBT themes. And they did exactly that. And they did that very well. The execution, while not flawless, was incredible start to end. The way they adapted the characters into a more toned down environment felt natural, and not too far off from their original characterisation. It's a visual feast and among all adaptations, it has the best and most memorable soundtrack. The strongest point of this adaptation has to be Kurosawa as well as the way more minor characters were handled and fleshed out. The progression of the relationship feels natural and they managed to adapt the manga's fast pace in a way that doesn't feel rushed on film form.
As for the weak points, it all comes down to the second half of the show, which I feel I need to give context for once again: Cherimaho drama was created when the manga was merely at volume 4 (in events, that's their first date) and Toyota had shared with the writing team her drafts for volume 5. So, after the confession, the drama had to create original plot lines which, while not bad, did feel different from the strong beginning of the show. The most complained about is the rushed handling of Tsuge and Minato's relationship, which was to be expected as they had so little interactions at that point in the manga. And, of courss, the thing the jdrama is notorious for: the lack of a kiss scene. Was it disappointing? Yes. But believe me when I say that it's literally not as a big deal when you watch the entire show. The show does not shy away from its queerness and there is nothing in their actions that could be interpreted as platonic. This poor production choice (which we can assume was implemented by someone else, tvtokyo has also removed straight kisses from adaptations for some reason and also it Was the height of covid) should not sully your experience with the show and in no way does it take away from its queerness. This version also features an asexual character as well as a mini arc for them so it's clear that the writers knew what they were doing and they were doing their best and it's so clearly conveyed in the gentleness of the show. It is also evident in the movie sequel, but more on that on its time to review.
All in all, I would say you need to experience the jdrama as it becomes a set point for the manga; the story shifts in the best way possible and it's all thanks to the jdrama and its unpredictable success.
(Though nothing beats watching it weekly during COVID)
Chinese radio drama (2022):
Personal score: 9/10
Objective score: 9/10
Skippability: Above a 6 since it's not really influential but I am not exaggerating when I say you are missing out maybe the best spin on the story thus far.
Cherry Magic's first and best foreign adaptation to date. First of all, we need to acknowledge how bananas it is for a niche yaoi manga to get a chinese radio drama because of its drama's success. Second of all, it's hilarious and incredibly romantic and the best and most creative take on the story. The localisation made for some interesting changes in the story and when it came to original plot lines, they nailed every single one. It's been a hot minute since I rewatched it but it's such a memorable piece of media. It's extremely underrated considering how accessible it is (thank you naina <3). Audio form foreign media may be hard to get into but the radio drama deserves every second of your time. Literally the only weak point I can mention for this adaptation is that it's not a visual medium and it's hard to get used to at first. But the voice acting, the character writing, the music, the manga and original plots— everything was executed near perfection.
Oh and it's just fucking hilarious. Like, extremely so.
Japanese Drama Sequel Movie (2022):
Personal score: 9/10
Objective score: 8/10
Skippability: 0 if you've watched the jdrama.
Cherimaho the Movie was announced on November 28th 2021 for a, later revealed, April 2022 release. And us international fans were able to watch it on November 8th 2022.... And yes, it was worth it! A manga loyal sequel to the jdrama, which had an original ending, was a bit hard to execute so there are points you have to suspend your belief. But this sequel was a nice last peek into the relationship of jdrama Adachi and Kurosawa and a well done farewell to the jdrama franchise. I was especially moved by the tackling of the reality of a long term gay relationship and the way the characters handled it. The movie is essentially split into two halves and both are crucial for Adachi and Kurosawa's development. If I had to mention a weak point, besides one or two scenes, it would be that I would love for certain events and character actions to be more in line with the manga but I am also aware that those changes were made to fit the characterisation already set by the Japanese Drama. Oh and the no kiss thing is still an issue somehow. But again, the rest of the story being good enough makes up for it. Still questionable production choices.
Thai Drama (2023-2024)
Personal score: 4/10
Objective score: 6/10
Skippability: 10, only recommended out of morbid curiosity.
Harsh score. What did the show get so wrong? I will admit being biased against it at first. Right after the movie had just dropped, a new adaptation is announced and almost immediately steals the spotlight. It doesn't help that it's produced by GMMTV, who, along with japanese channel MBS, I consider the most annoying BL factories (with the rare exceptions) for fans and shows alike. I also wasn't thrilled that the casting was decided on a pre-existing couple rather than which actors would fit each individual character best. But I tried to look forward to it, especially since the cast and crew insisted that this was a manga adaptation rather than a remake and that they would go beyond the plot lines the japanese drama did. I had some gripes with the jdrama in comparison to the manga so that was good to hear. After a while, they dropped a few trailers and I decided that my worries were probably for nothing and that the show seemed interesting and we produced. And it surprisingly was! For a few episodes, at least. The localisation is very well done. Adachi's living situation, his transport to work, the work environment— vastly different from the original setting but successfully adapted to Thai culture. This version is a lot more lighthearted on about everything. At first, this was a fun spin. Focusing on its comedy, since it's a strong point of the earlier story. But, as the show went on, that wasn't necessarily a good thing. The strong point of this adaptation was the first few episodes as well as the production quality. It's visually beautiful as far as settings, Tay and Jan go. The runtime being longer kind of worked in their favor, as each episode would cover more ground (with exception ep1 which managed to adapt like 15 pages into 50 minutes). Another strong point is the handling of Tsuge and Minato—although their age gap wasn't properly conveyed, the chemistry they had, even if they were a bit out of character, was fun enough. Unlike the Jdrama, the writers here had a clearer visiom of what they wanted to do with them (and they also had like 7 more volumes of content).
Unfortunately, this is as far as my praises go. The weakest point of this show is its main character. Adachi, in this show Achi, is the most unlikeable protagonist I've seen in a hot minute—and I was watching Ossans Love while this was airing. Generally, he's not even that bad ; but he's kind of run of the mill stereotypical uke archetype you'd find in those manufactured BLs, pretty opposite of what Adachi is. He goes through no character development as he begins pretty much at where Adachi ends and he's just so uninteresting to follow. The actor didn't do a great job either but to his defense, he wasn't given much to work with. Kurosawa's counterpart, Karan was way better, at least but he can't make up for the protagonist. The completely made up heterosexual ship between Fujisaki and Rokakku (Pai and Rock here) was a pain to watch especially since they tried to keep Pai's independent nature from the Jdrama (where she was canonically aroace) which just made her disinterested in Rock's advances until the very last episode where she's suddenly into him–if i wanted to watch a badly paced heterosexual couple I wouldn't be watching a BL, respectfully. But besides all that, I think this adaptation was a wasted opportunity. It clearly had budget and time. But it relied heavily on the Jdrama instead of the manga and well, that's fine for fans of the drama but promising manga accuracy and delivering an even more sanitised version of the jdrama was just a huge disappointment. Why should I relive the japanese drama? What's YOUR take on the manga?
Also to clarify rumours I've seen spread around, Toyota was not involved in the making. The japanese side that needed to approve the script was not directly reporting to Toyota because another company has the rights to distribute the Cherry Magic IP, she wasn't as involved in negotiations and stuff as people claim she was, especially considering she learned of the show's existence a few days before the general public did. The usage of AI art in the drama's promotion despite Toyota being vocally anti AI was also a point of disconnect that left a bitter taste in my mouth. But also I acknowledge that Cherry Magic Thailand exists mostly for Thai fans, probably in a similar way the 80% of my country's tv shows are remakes and honestly good for them, I'd love to have a CM remake in my culture even if it's not "perfect" and I'm sure parts I personally found confusing as changes make sense in a way I cannot understand, hence why the objective score is pretty higher than my personal score.
Anime (2024)
Personal score: 8.5/10
Objective score: 7.5/10
Skippability: 4, cute and loyal enough so it's worth checking out
The much anticipated Cherry Magic anime was something, alright. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish but it, unfortunately, has some glaringly big problems when it comes to its animation. For the runtime they were given, they were able to include much more than I thought they would and even if the pace tended to be faster than expected at times it wasn't as much of a problem; I love Cherry Magic a lot and I believe its strongest narratives begin after volume 5 or so and I'm glad we had the chance to see a little of that as well. The voice acting is definitely the greatest thing about this adaptation. In most of CM's adaptations, Kurosawa's actor tends to always stand out more but the anime for me is a bit more balanced; both Kobayashi and Suzuki are extremely talented and passionate in this. Thankfully, the same passion is also transmitted in the english dub, which is so fucking funny. A lot of people were disappointed with the last episode, as they fast forwarded some things for a grand finale but I'm willing to let it slide because at least they are self aware about the impossibility of a second season and chose to show some highlights we might not have gotten otherwise. Plus, they're making up with the movie so, we'll see! Back to the animation though, some episodes were criminal to sit through. It's sad because this treatment is likely because CM is a josei bl manga and animation projects like that tend to get the short end of the stick a Lot. That piano BGM *you know the one* was also frustrating at times. And I wish the colors popped a little more, yknow?
Honorable mention: Audio Drama (2019-)
I can't score it because I listened to it once on a bus ride and I'm not even sure I finished it. I'm sure I'll come back to it.
Happy Cherimaho The Musical to all those who still celebrate <3 And if you made it all the way here, don't forget to check the Cherry Magic Masterdoc <3

I will say, Kidnap is turning out to be as pulpy as I was initially hoping it would be.
It's fast-paced in a way that BL rarely is—our hero finds himself in a new predicament every week, struggling to balance his situational needs with his moral code. He's fighting off loan sharks, his brother has health issues, he's struggling with a kidnapping that he's not emotionally committed to, he's falling for his target, he's getting involved with the mafia, and soon enough, the police will be on his tail.
It may not be as heavily sexual as some pulp can be, but Kidnap bears markers of erotic and romantic pulp stories—it's tinged with situational bondage, we have a sadistic villain, and its romance is built on a contrast of high danger and emotional tenderness. As a romantic lead, Min is both strong and vulnerable, while Q plays a "damsel in distress" who is smart, snarky, and more capable than he seems.
Because I'm not fluent in Thai, I'm not comfortable speaking to the wittiness or snappiness of the dialogue, but the show is funny, and the comedy brings a levity that such a fast-paced story needs. Not all shows dealing with heavy topics like loan sharks or mafia need a lighthearted or silly aspect, and often this can be out of place, but when you are moving as quickly as Kidnap, those heavier elements can feel like a constant barrage.
I won't declare that the show was for-sure going for a pulp feeling, but it certainly bears the markers of a lot of pulp literature. Pulp weeklies (which, incidentally, made a lot of their money off of advertisements x), needed stories that would keep their readers coming back week after week. How will Min get out of this predicament now?
Overall, I hope that people can take Kidnap as it is without judging it for failing to achieve something that it's not trying to accomplish. Pulp may not be for everyone, and that's fine. It's certainly not high-brow literature, it was made to be accessible to the masses, but many great writers got their start in pulp, and the pulp era had a lasting impact on modern storytelling. Personally, I tend to really love things with strong pulp influences, so I am being well fed by Kidnap. Maybe that will change in the future, but so far I have enjoyed each episode more than the last.
#em post#kidnap the series#kidnap meta#i guess?#eta: i don't mean to say if you don't enjoy kidnap it's coz you don't like pulp lit#there's literally hundreds of pulp stories so no one is going to enjoy it all

Suppose I haven't watched much BL to be fair but sort of surprised how Twilight Out of Focus went there on the third episode. Every pairing takes relationships at their own pace, but that was fast.

This Week in BL - Top 3 Are HEATING UP
Organized, in each category, by ones I'm enjoying most at the top.
Dec 2023 Wk 2
Ongoing Series - Thai
Honestly, 3 are neck & necking for top position! They are all so good in different ways. But The Sign had me hooting with laughter this week, so it scooped #1.
The Sign (Sat YT) ep 4 of 10 - This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, paranormal, fated mates, mystery, suspense, slasher, and horror. It’s the king of genre mash-up chaos. I have no idea what I’m watching but I’m ON this ride. Is it a roller coaster? Is it a haunted house? Is it a twirl & hurl? Is there candy floss? Am I even tall enough? Who tf cares. All through the second scene, I was laughing. It was legit funny. Billy has great comedic timing. Guess he’s not just a pretty face.
Everyone should be watching this. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it.
Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 6 of 12 - Yech. August may be one of GMMTV’s least likable characters ever (and that is saying something). Meanwhile, MOAR language play! They spoiling me!
Mhok letting Day go then walking away at the party hurt so bad.
Argh this show is great!
Ep 6 so that kiss was right on schedule. I’m looking forward to the boyfriend eps before doom & pain in the new year. Carry on GMMTV.
Speaking of...
Cherry Magic (Sat YouTube) ep 2 of 12 - Oh they’re great. It’s great. It’s paced oddly, moving quickly through most of the key scenes of the original JBL in these first 2 eps. I think it’s intending to encompass more of the manga series than that one did. Which is good, cause that will get us all the way to The Library Kiss (TM). It's the best kiss in the manga. I also like the sides in this show (better than the JBL version).
My Dear Gangster Oppa (Thurs iQIYI) ep 8fin - What a lovely slightly unhinged little show. Tew, can we talk? Un-ironic suspenders, that takes courage. Also, the revolver was a crazy gun choice.
Final thoughts:
This show is just as ridiculous as its title. About a gaymer who falls in love with one of his in-game teammates, who just happens to be a IRL gangster. A real gangster, the kind that actually kills people regularly. The lead pair is doing their best with a ridiculous story and shoddy script, but I enjoyed it. Although I was grateful it wasn’t very long, what we got was oddly satisfying if, frankly, a little bit silly. Recommended. 8/10
That said, what's important about this BL is not the show, but the production and style. Let me explain... no, too much, let me sum up.
This is a chimera BL. Regarding characters: it has Japan's style otaku + Korea's style gangster + Thailand's style friendship group. It used Thai talent + Korean money (Kakao) & IP (adapted from a manwha) but aired on a Chinese channel globally (iQIYI). I'm delighted by the eclectic insanity of this production and truly doubt that any other genre but BL could ever produce like this. It's like diplomat's BL and it's the great wonder of our age that it happened at all. This BL deserves its place in the history books on production alone, even if that place is only in the footnotes. A remarkable little monster.
For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - The sides are… messy. Using the same actor for the old bf is… odd. But in the end, this show leaves me smiling. Which means, I like it despite myself.
Bake Me Please (Mon Gaga) ep 4 of 6 - It's decent. It’s basically what I wanted Antique Bakery to be when I first watched that way back when (not to mention Bite Me). But there’s been so much BL since then that, for some reason, this is falling flat. I think it’s moving too fast for a Thai series. Although, say what you like, Ohm has to be one of the best soft kissers in the industry. He's just good at mouth tenderness.
Ugh, that doesn't sound right. But you know what I mean.
Twins the series (Fri GaGa) ep 7 of 10 - I love how First is so upset when Sprite starts chatting and being nice to Koh. Sprite is just a sweet easy-going likable boy. I enjoy Sprite as a main character, he’s a bubbly little communicator. And they had a cute kiss.
Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 5 of 14 - Because there was more Alan and Jeff and they were more key to the plot I was more into this ep. I do compare it to green smoothie down the pants in the Trash Watch.
Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 3 of 12 - Look OffGun are truly great. But I’m just not sure we need them in BL anymore. That said, it’s nice to see Off as "the one with the crush" for a change. Also, this show is only good when OffGun are on screen together, otherwise it kinda, well, sucks.
Night Dream (Sat YT) ep 1 of 6 - Cafe setting featuring a cook and a writer. *Seems awfully familiar.* Except these two are exes and this is a reunion romance. It’s stiff and very pulp but not bad (no crap sound effects) and I am a sucker for a reunion romance. That said, Rookie Thailand is not to be trusted, proceed with caution.
Absolute Zero (Weds iQIYI) ep 12fin - I'm grateful this is over. It was tense but for the wrong reasons - sadness and confusion. This final episode was fine, but that’s because it was mostly them being together + flashbacks. Plus all the familiar actor faces of the grown-up friends (hi, Karn my lovely, still stunning I see). But 2 of 12 episodes is not enough for the 10 of suffering and confusion that came before.
In conclusion:
A man is killed on his 10th anniversary resulting in a time paradox, for which the only solution is him never meeting his childhood sweetheart until later in life. Both lovers cycle back to the past at different ages, so that they each become their own 1st & 2nd great loves, but every time it ends in pain, until each also endures 10 years of separation. Finally it gets fixed, but leaves them with multiple memories of time's failures like temporal PTSD, and everyone around them has chronic deja vu. Me? I got both. This is one of those BLs that is high-quality with great acting but poor story. If you like your BL dwelling, maudlin, and tense due to angst and suffering, then you might enjoy this. But I just regret it, 6/10. Recommended only if you like confusing time travel emo pain.
In which case, just watch Tokyo in April is... instead. Give over Thailand, Japan does it better.
Middleman’s Love (Fri YT & iQIYI ep 6 of 8 - While our main couple isn’t working for me... the side couple isn’t working for me either. I really wanted to give LeoTai a chance, this is the 3rd show I’ve seen them in, and still nope. I like Jade a lot more when he’s sad. He’s a much more pleasant screen experience depressed. I would like him to stay hurt for a couple of eps, just so I can enjoy this show a tiny bit more. But then he just goes unhinged again. Argh. I just don’t like it.
My Universe (Sun iQIYI) Pisces of Me ep 17 of 24 - Codependent boyfriends in middle school planning for high school dealing with stuff. Including other boys being into them.
Playboyy (Thurs Gaga) 5 of 14 eps - Dear Playboyy, it's not you, it’s me… I hate you. You’re about as deep (and as palatable) as a shot glass of cum. While I'm sure you’re someone’s kink, you're my weakest link. Goodbye. DNF
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
VIP Only (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 5 of 10 - It’s cute but I don’t think BL in this short format is Taiwan’s strength these days. And this is quite slow and dull. Perhaps they should have whacked it down to 6 eps, not 10.
Sahara-sensei to Toki-kun (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 3 of 8 - This is one of those JBLs that I should like on paper but is failing me. The drag bit was ridiculous but handled gently. The kiss was… well… something wasn’t it? It’s all very odd. I like the photographer cutie character.
It's Airing But...
The Whisperer (Sun ????) 10 eps - Thai horror BL that ALSO involves cheating (what joy is mine). I don't think even the perfect single dimple can motivate me to watch. Word is... it's terrible.
7 Days Before Valentine (Weds WeTV) 10 eps - Giving me Luminous Solution vibes. I'm waiting to binge if it's safe.
Beyond The Star (Weds iQIYI) 8 eps - House of Stars meets Boyband. I was NOT impressed with ep 1. Been told I shouldn't bother.
What Did You Eat Yesterday Season 2 AKA Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2 (Japan Gaga) 10 eps - I find this series more fun to binge, so I'm waiting until after it completes its run next week.
Dear Kitakyushu (Thai/Japan movie) in theaters in country only, I know nothing about distribution.
Behind the Shadows (Korea movie) this is a historical I was interested in, but I've been told they kill the gay so I'm OUT.
Next Week Looks Like This
Still coming:
12/23 Dead Friend Forever (Thai horror) iQIYI
Original 2023 forthcoming BL master post (see comments, some are inaccurate, NOT KEPT UPDATED). With the end of the year upon us I'll do an "announced for 2023 but never happened list" soon.
THIS WEEK’S BEST MOMENTS
He so pretty.
I forgot how likable TayNew are, and frankly I think New is a better version of this role for me, personally. I like him a lot. He's a conscientious sweetheart. And a good egg. (Cherry Magic)
Ah the rooftop my old friend. (Last Twilight)
I would like to point out that it's no accident the naga's sex dream happened in the shower, he's a water creature after all. (The Sign)

It's december already which just feels insane to me. Christmas is coming which makes me happy but this year went by too fast. Anyway as usual, spoilers and opinions below, read at your own risk.
QL - Currently Watching
🇹🇭 Caged Again [4/10] - Junior is one of my favourite characters. He never learned to deceive so he just says what he feels like it's the most natural thing. And his confidence and optimism are contagious. I love him. And Sun is just smitten and terrible at hiding it so it's a good thing Junior is completely clueless about these things. I'm loving Jodd and Jeng and since they are also animals, I think we're getting more about them next episode. I can't wait. 🇹🇭 Fourever You [9/16] - I am so incredibly bored. They are stretching these two pairs for no reason. They should have just given us the four pairs in 16 eps cause this is torture. 🇯🇵Fragrance You Inherit [3/8] - It's lovely. I love Sakura. I really liked the scene in the restaurant. Sakura talking about being a single mom and Mone being supportive brought tears to my eyes. It was a beautiful moment. I love the relationship between the moms and the kids and I'm curious to see how Toki will react, if he in fact doesn't know already. It's also interesting to think about what exactly parents owe their kids or not, specially regarding something like that. Fansubs being provided by @isaksbestpillow. Thank you🧡 🇯🇵Love in the Air Koi [5/10] - The pacing is so much better here. I agree with @lurkingshan here and the kidnappings will probably be combined somehow. I like the second couple a bit better here than the thai version, but I'm still not the biggest fan of this storyline. Although Fuma is better than Prapai.
🇯🇵 Love is a Poison [11/12] - Shiba is so in love. I always believed, just like Shan, that Haruto was coming back, but it was painful watching Shiba hurt. Only one episode left where they will defeat the bad guy and live happily ever after. I will not accept anything else. 🇯🇵Miseinen [4/11] - Well at least they are 'friends' now. I can't with these two. That ice cream scene was insane and it's burned into my brain. This is a great adaptation and I need all the episodes like right now.
🇹🇭 Perfect 10 Liners [6/24] - PondSand are everything to me basically. I'm so over ArcArm and I need the next couple stat. It looks like this will be another parade of guest stars which is kinda fun and next week Sea will make an appearance along with the always fun jealousy plot which hopefully will end with them being boyfriends so we can move on to the next couple.
🇹🇼 See Your Love [7/13] - The contraste between the couples is hilarious to me. The sign language scenes were the cutest and they are adorable. And this must be a record number of the 'falling into each other's arms and almost kissing but not' trope. No one is that clumsy. The sides are bonkers.
🇹🇭 Spare Me Your Mercy [1/8] - Strong start. I'm reserving judgement but I like the setting a lot, so many MoD vibes, and I like this pair. They can act.
🇹🇭 The Heart Killers [2/12] - I'm watching quietly.
🇹🇭 Your Sky [3/12] - This might be too cute. Teerak is adorably clueless and Fah is so smitten. He came up with that nickname so fast, it's almost as if he's been calling him that in his head for a while. Also, the friend group is amazing at running interference. That scene in the lift was great. And I love the scenes with the Teerak and Babe.
QL - Finished
This is gonna be the quick-fire version cause I'm tired.
🇨🇳 Blue Canvas of Youthful Days - Great until episode 10. Unearned and unbelievable ending. Mostly forgiven because China. 🇰🇷🇹🇭 Eccentric Romance - What did I watch? was it bl? was it a crime drama? No idea, but it was not good.
🇹🇭 Every You, Every Me - Rushed ending but I really liked the bl inside the bl. I wanna see these two again.
🇹🇭 Jack & Joker - YinWar. On my screen. In 2024. Even if it was bad, it was good.
🇹🇭 Kidnap - Proof that Ohm will pretty much get me to watch anything.
🇰🇷 Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo - Pain and snow and happy endings.
🇰🇷 Love in the Big City - As close to perfection as anything I ever watched. Young will stay with me forever.
🇹🇭 Peaceful Property - A mess and also proof that TayNew will get me to watch anything.
🇰🇷My Damn Business - It was fine.
🇹🇼 The Nipple Talk - Mama was a gift.
Others - Watched
🇰🇷 Bad Guy | 🇯🇵Seoul Blues | 🇯🇵Blue Boys | 🇹🇼Marry My Dead Body | 🇯🇵Some Love Begins with Mistaken Identity | 🇰🇷Taming the Bad Boy | 🇰🇷Joseon Chefs | 🇰🇷The History of Us | 🇯🇵 Polyethylene Terephthalate 1 & 2
And continuing my YinWar agenda they just released a song and the video is hilarious.

I just watched 4 Minutes episodes 2 and 3 back-to-back...
...and I noticed something interesting about the NC scenes in the first three episodes.
They're not that "sexy". In fact, it feels like they're not supposed to be sexy.
The purpose of these scenes is not to be hot fan service eye candy whatever no the purpose is to further the plot or provide information about characters' personality, mental/emotional state and dynamics between characters.
They're something to analyze and pick apart and base entire theories on, not something pretty to look at.
Idk how to put this but they're filmed and edited in a way that makes me go "oh wow that's a bit much - very fast paced and unsatisfying" and I'm 99% that's exactly what they're trying to evoke.
I mean it was pretty obvious early on that this show wouldn't be for pwp enjoyers or romcom fans but still I find this very interesting from a BL genre standpoint.
#and yes i watched dff and yes its basically the same concept#regarding the nc scenes i mean#4 minutes#4 minutes the series#4 minutes spoilers#4 minutes ep 3

Welcome to another round of W2 Tells You What You Should See, where W2 (me) tries to sell you (you) on something you should be watching. Today's choice: 鬓边不是海棠红/Winter Begonia
Winter Begonia is the tale of the intertwined lives of a wealthy, westernized businessman and a bratty, dramatic Peking Opera performer as they navigate the historical landscape of 1930s China.
It is a slow historical ramble of a show, to the point where I couldn't really say it has a single plot. Events just happen in their lives, and the show follows them with a pleasant steadiness. Characters go away, and sometimes they come back. Interpersonal conflicts rise and then get resolved. Sometimes you just get to sit and watch part of an opera happen. The last third of the show develops a slightly more cohesive narrative, but even then, it's still mostly a loose constellation of events related to larger goings-on in the culture.
So if you're looking for tight plots and fast-paced action, you'll want to look somewhere else. But if you're the kind of person who likes to wrap up sometimes in a gentle warm blanket of a beautiful show, I have five reasons you should give this one a try.
1. Oh, they're in love
Perhaps the most notable thing about Cheng Fengtai and Shang Xirui is that they spend the entire show smiling at one another, staring longingly at one another, and/or making each other laugh.
A lot of danmei couples depend on having at least one partner who, if not outright tsundere, is at least stoically long-suffering -- which is romantic, sure, but also exhausting in real life. These two read about as married as any danmei pair I've ever seen because they make one another smile all the time. They're incredibly touchy and affectionate from basically the moment they meet. They're not just in love, they actually like one another.
Now, don't get me wrong: These two are both absolute exhausting gremlins who deserve one another so they don't have to be anyone else's problems. But they're good-natured enough about their respective gremlin natures that when one of them lets loose with his rascality, the other tends to think it's hilarious.
They don't even have the mandated danmei breakup! They're never mad at one another for more than the length of an episode. Most of the time they're just refreshingly normal about one another (or, you know, about as normal as two drama queens can be). And when they're being not normal about one another, it's because the circumstances they are currently enduring are not normal either.
They're so in love that by the time you get to the last episode, everyone in their lives is like, gee, those two sure are in love. For the main couple in a Chinese-censored BL adaptation? That's pretty darn in love.
2. The costumes!!!
Of course I have to gush over the costumes. Several major characters are professional opera performers, and their wardrobes are just stunning in complexity and detail -- and accuracy, apparently.
But they're not even where all of the wardrobe budget went! Everyone looks great, from the dapper upper class to the household servants to the street performers.
I also can't get over how everyone looks so cozy in their winter outfits. The show really wants to hammer home how cold Beijing is, and so most non-opera clothes are either heavily quilted or furry. Not a single outfit in this show is slimming (except maybe for some of the gorgeous gowns Cheng Meixin wears). It's all about conserving body heat, which means a lot of people walk around basically wearing mildly tailored quilts all the time. I love it. I envy it.
3. Oops! All bottoms!
This is a show of very soft men. It helps that very many of them have spent their whole lives playing female roles, but even those that haven't tend to be pretty darn soft.
(And I'm not even talking about the way people keep handing Cheng Fengtai babies and he loves it.)
Du Luocheng and Shang Xirui are absolutely what happens when you get two soft gay guys who are kinda into one another, but they're both too lazy to top, so they just become best friends instead.
Fan Lian stands as a testament to how you can be the only heterosexual in the show and still be soft as hell.
The old married gays. Softness level: off the charts.
Chen Renxiang's role is that of the opera frenemy, and he's incredibly soft about it. (This actor is also apparently in the Sha Po Lang live-action adaptation! Maybe someday it will be released...)
Opera underling La Yuehong hardens up later in the show, but even when he does, there's still a tragic softness to it.
Even the baddies are soft! Pretty much all the rival opera bitches fall into the "love to hate" category -- and nearly all of them win at least some sympathy from you before they leave the story for good.
There's one more soft boy whose presence surprised me, and that is Xue Zhicheng/Kujo Kazuma, a sympathetic Japanese character. Every other Japanese character in the show is sinister somehow -- not surprising, considering the drama is set during the brutal Japanese occupation of Beiping/Beijing.
But this little guy is a gentle, well-meaning opera fan who just wants to watch his favorite performers! When his actions cause trouble, it's only because he's so well-meaning that he couldn't see how anyone could disapprove of his attempts at cross-cultural undertanding. He even comes to the rescue a few times, at significant personal cost!
Moreover, the show uses him to make it clear that there's a difference between the Japanese occupying force and Japanese people and culture. In fact, the show is pretty critical of people who conflate the two and use interest in the latter as evidence of support of the former. That is not a level of nuance I've seen from other dramas set in this time period, and I was pleased to see it.
In conclusion, the critial war shortage in 1930s Beijing was not food or medicine or ammunition, but tops.
4. A whole lotta ladies
Again, not even counting the fact that one of the two main guys, many of his buddies, all of his heroes, and several of the antagonists professionally dress as women.
The most notable of them is Cheng Fengtai’s wife, Fan Xiang'er. They've been married for years by the time the show starts, and they have a son together. Theirs is an arranged marriage that they've managed to make work so well that they've actually wound up liking one another ... most of the time. Remember what I said earlier about his being exhausting? She knows that better than anyone.
(Sidebar: If you are uncomfortable with a love story where one of the participants is canonically married to someone else, this may be one you want to skip. That said, there are several male characters in this show who have multiple wives and/or mistresses, so the metric of what counts as infidelity in this setting is ... loose.)
Beyond her, though, there are many more female supporting characters in this show, from all different socioeconomic levels, in all different kinds of situations.
A caveat: Some of the women (one in particular) are at times frustrating as hell because they're too often written as jealous shrews who believe all the terrible gossip they hear and act on it without having actual adult conversations with anyone first. I dislike this trope, mostly because it relies on making some smart women artificially very stupid for the sake of forwarding the plot. I have little patience for situations that could have been solved five episodes ago if somebody had just been willing to ask clarifying questions.
That said, I can't be too mad about that, because there are many, many more women who are not written like that. Some of them are good and loyal! Some are sneaky and self-interested! Some are callous and manipulative! Some are meek and traumatized! Some make terrible decisions! Some make terrible decisions but, like, you get it! You know, just like in real life?
The answer to better representation is almost always more representation. When a character is the only one of whatever they are, everything they do is kind of an indictment of that category, especially when that category has a history of stereotypical negative representation. When there are several others, the characters stop being representatives of that category and start being just plain characters.
5. It just feels good to watch
Don't misunderstand: This is not a happy fun time show where everything in sunshine and roses all the way down. There are plenty of tense and emotional parts. Not everyone we like makes it out of the drama alive. Not all love stories get a happily ever after. People disappoint one another all the time. Awful things happen when soldiers occupy civilian populations. Poverty is a bitch.
But the show itself remains a nice viewing experience. It's absolutely a feast for the senses, what with all the music and costumes and sets and props and old-fashioned cars and everything.
The story is very straightforward. It's never trying to do any complex schemes or mislead you before some big reveal. I imagine this could be a good show to put on in the background while you're doing something else. You're never going to be too desperately confused about what's going on if you zone out for a minute -- and if you are, just hang on for a bit, because by next episode, it'll probably be onto whatever storyline comes next.
I have not read the novel, and I cannot judge anything against its standards. However, my friend who has read parts of the novel tells me that the adaptation is much preferable, because in the novel, you get to hear everyone's internal narration -- and everyone's internal narration makes it clear they're all bratty, insufferable assholes. That is not the case here! Or, rather, they are often bratty and/or insufferable, but from outside their heads, it's a lot more charming.
Finally, it's legitimately a very good love story. Shang Xirui is the only person in Cheng Fengtai's life who loves him for who he is, not what someone else needs him to be. Cheng Fengtai goes from being enraptured by this beautiful little weirdo to basically wanting to wife him. They spend a lot of time taking care of one another, sometimes in the only ways they know how. They're capable of operating independently -- there are several episodes where their storylines diverge completely -- but they'd prefer not to. They've just each found their soulmate, and that's all there is to it. (The red thumbprint in the palm is about the most romantic thing I've ever seen.)
I'm a little surprised by how little I hear English-speaking fandom talk about this one, especially since (see below) it's a widely available, high-budget show that even has a Shang Xirui figurine, and there's no question about how in gay love these two are. But if you hop over to AO3, there's only 257 works total in the Winter Begonia tag, a scant 57 of which are in English, and if you've tried looking into the Winter Begonia tag on Tumblr, you know it's pretty quiet 'round here.
I can't be sure, but I'd assume that's partly because this is both a) a relatively low-stakes drama, and b) so enmeshed with actual historical events and concepts that you'd have to do at least a baseline amount of research before making any fan media. I would imagine that for some folk, this is a barrier to entry.
And it is 49 slow, gentle episodes long. I saw Tumblr posts asking which episodes are important, because the posters don't want to or can't commit to watching the whole thing. But the answer is ... all of them? none of them? There's no plot you'd be getting or missing with specific episodes. There are very few things I can think of that would even qualify as spoilers. It's just a walk through a couple very eventful years in the main pair's lives. I understand if folk aren't up for that, but if you are, this is really a gem.
Have I convinced you to give it a try?
I would say that Winter Begonia is perhaps the most easily watchable of any c-drama I've come across. Here's where you can find it:
iQiyi
Viki
Amazon Prime
YouTube
We watched most of it on YouTube, where the subs were perfectly fine. However, there was one episode where we had to switch platforms because the English subs were all out of synch, so we went to Amazon and they were fine there too. Other than that, I don't really have a sense of which translation experience is the best. Try them all!
(PS: If you feel like putting on a tinfoil hat, I'm just going to say, they look at one another like that in real life, too.)

Turning by Kuyu
okay. I acknowledge the fact that I wasn’t expecting much when I started reading Turning. Just out of desperation since the manhwa was still at early stages and I ended up on the novel. I was kinda expecting disappointed (bad experience with to novels) and was sceptical about the absolutely humongous amount of chapters.
Even as I started reading it, it felt a little boring and slow paced (mostly due to being used to Fast and Furious(tm) in bl romance), but I gradually started to enjoy how Kuyu-nim developed their characters. In all the instances of reading novels, one thing had remained the same for me: not being able to remember the side-characters. Obviously, this time it was different. Even the most insignificant character showed development as the story progressed, something which I really loved and am wholly invested in. And soon enough I found that I started to crave for even more chapters to read. Finished 1/4th of the tl in two days, three weeks to catch up. Not a moment passed when I felt the need to drop it due to bad plot OR bad to (kudos to the translators).
I almost couldn’t believe it was omegaverse. The fetishisation of the a/b/o trope in many novels wasn’t present here. Then comes the world building. Like TOTCF, this novel has mages, swordsmasters and divine power users, along with the author’s personal inclusion of ‘awakeners’, all of which Kuyu-nim has masterfully balanced and structured.
That aside, the political intrigue in this novel has been a major highlight, since the mc’s and ml’s shenanigans in this sphere (especially ml’s) has been an absolute delight. While in the power sphere, the mc’s fights are engaging.
I could rant all day, but to all those who are apprehensive of starting reading this, lemme tell you I am 89% sure it’ll get famous when the manhwa catches up. Early readers gonna get the perks. Please, please read this novel. Show all your support, cuz in my humble opinion, I have stumbled upon a masterpiece I place right beside Little Mushroom in standards and way above mdzs, svsss and maybe even tgcf in comparison
