i choose to love you in silence,
for in silence i find no rejection.
i choose to love you in loneliness,
for in lonliness no one owns you but me.
i choose to adore you from a distance,
for distance will shield me from pain.
i choose to kiss you in the wind,
for the wind is gentler than my lips.
i choose to hold you in my dreams,
for in my dreams, you have no end.
~Rumi
and i cry everytime i read this in farsi.

i’m starting a diaspora war over babel by rf kuang lets go
Shuda edited and said : ramy’s dad said allah hafez and i had to PUT THE AUDIO BOOK DOWN AND YELL
#i believe theyd say khuda hafez purely bc no one fucking said allah hafez until like 10 years ago#khouda hafez is also from farsi and is a shared term with hindu and other south asian religous groups#i think in the 1800s especially in the context of babel and in the context of india being perceived as a wholly hindu country#the secular khouda hafez would be the term#like yeah sure maybe theres an urdu document from 200 years ago that has allah hafiz but literally everyone says khouda hafiz

I want to see you.Know your voice. Recognize you when you first come round the corner. Sense your scent when I come into a room you’ve just left. Know the lift of your heel, the glide of your foot. Become familiar with the way you purse your lips then let them part, just the slightest bit, when I lean in to your space and kiss you. I want to know the joy of how you whisper “more”.

Iranians’ and Indian Muslims’ different relationships to European philology explain why the two conceived of their languages in such contrary ways. This divergence reveals the historical contingency of the two narratives. It was not inevitable that Iranian nationalism would adopt the philological model of linguistic continuity, which is made clear by comparison with Indian Muslims’ conception of Urdu as a mixed language.
This history leads to several conclusions.
First, what appears today as national culture – unique and discretely bounded – is the product of exchange with others from beyond the borders of the nation-state. This is certainly true of modern Iran. Nationalism, and what I call ‘Persianate modernity’, is the veneer that hides the very conditions of cosmopolitan cooperation and exchange that generated national culture in the first place. This suggests something about culture: it has no inherent politics, no predetermined trajectory.
Culture is an empty vessel that can be attached to all kinds of political projects. Cross-cultural exchange similarly can serve reactionary ends just as well as progressive ones. At the turn of the 20th century, exchange between Iranians and Indians served to alienate Indians from the history of Persian literature. More recently, the idea of Indian Muslims’ cosmopolitan origins has marked them as outsiders to India – a narrative adopted by India’s prime minister Narendra Modi and other Hindu nationalists to help marginalise and disenfranchise millions of Indian Muslims.
Nor is ‘indigeneity’ inherently progressive, a fact also illustrated by India’s Hindu nationalists. They now describe themselves as an indigenous population besieged by Muslim allochthones, ie foreign intruders. Indeed, we find the language of indigeneity taken up by ethno-nationalists elsewhere in the contemporary world – from the European Right, claiming to defend its indigenous culture against foreign refugees, to Jewish supremacists in Israel, who insist on their own indigenous roots in the land.

me today in first arabic class when i saw shin and first example word was beyt and i can write my name way easier than all the guys called jack and shit followed by immediate rapid ego death when i realise i have to learn 3 versions of every letter and the teacher says she doesn't even understand moroccan arabic as a native speaker and then shows us arabic cursive thats literally just squiggles with no diacritics 😭😭😭
#and the class is like 1/3rd girlies who speak farsi urdu etc and already know the letters#she also talked about ibrahim the prophet and ismail inventing arabic like its historical fact but u know. live laugh love shes very lovely#I think she was just trying to make it engaging for the significant proportion of the class that were muslims who dont speak Arabic#love listening to her speak though and I was better than like 90% of the other white students cuz I can make a kh sound#although that hhh aspirant sound is gonna take me forever
