What we have here is one of the PC Engine's BEST-SELLING games throughout its 12-year life cycle history, and no, that symbol on the katakana is NOT a swastika. King Yomi of the race of Earth, descended from the stalk of the giant Dark Orchid, was finally banished deep underground by the Fire Clan and the seven sacred swords. A thousand years later, a Tycoon with designs on Zipangu breaks the seal and releases Yomi and the Dark Orchid. It is up to the tender boy general and descendent of the Fire Clan, Sengoku Manji-maru, along with his friends, the flamboyant Kabuki Danjuro, the ferociously powerful Gokuraku Taro, and the mysterious, star-crossed Kinu, to stand up to the beasts of the race of Earth. Set in the fictional but distinctively Japanese world of Zipangu, the game's sprawling, out-of-this-world adventures track the hero of the race of Fire as he battles the great demon of the Earth....the game astoundingly sold nearly as many copies as its platform sold consoles. It has enjoyed enduring popularity, long sitting at the top of fan voting in gaming magazines. With over three thousand characters, an all-star cast of narrators including Kyoko Kishida, three hours of narration, twenty thousand map screens, animated sequences around every corner, and the full orchestra sound of Joe Hisaishi, you don't have to look hard to find the many ways in which Tengai Makyo II rewrote the book on RPGs. Each of these elements serves to develop and enhance the human dramas of the game's labyrinthine story.

Geez it's been almost a year...and I need to admit about this
I can't stop thinking about Tengai Makyou series, I play other RPGs and I still can't get this franchise out of my head. It feels like a never-ending addiction. The first thing that comes to my mind is a narcissistic blonde guy whose voice is very infectious to me...*COF COF* I mean, I think this has become one of franchises of my life. The concept was supposed to be a Japanese "work" misunderstood by the US, but most of the games are so heavily Japanese that it made me more influential in the language, like, I managed to memorize some kanji thanks to these games and I started trying to understand what the characters were saying, like "BOKU GA JIPANGU ICHI NO DATE OTOKO!!"; "WAGARITINI TEKINASHI!". And their designs, stories and soundtrack make my heart warm...as if it impacts me....I managed to beat the original version of Tengai Makyou II in 135 hours and 17 minutes, and it made me so happy even having difficulties in some game events.
I may be going crazy for anything related to ancient Japanese culture that is heavily influenced, and I haven't finished the other "main" games yet, like 4th Apocalypse and Zero, but I intend to finish them someday. I appreciate if you're one of the only people reading this and I hope more people get interested in this franchise and have at least the "main" games in the west.

Tengai Makyou II: Manjimaru (TG-16 Mini)
Tumblr media
Phew.
Phew!
What a game! You might have noticed that my semi-daily updates for TurboGrafx-16 Mini games have slowed down a lot recently, and you can put the blame on Tengai Makyou II: Manjimaru. Normally for these mini-console entries I only spend an hour or two with each game. That's obviously not enough time to finish any RPG, but I've played most of them before anyway. The ones I haven't played rarely grab me in any serious fashion. I had not played Tengai Makyou II: Manjimaru before. Well, after a couple of hours I wanted to play more, and I did. And I kept doing so. And now, seventy-odd hours of gameplay later, I am finished Tengai Makyou II: Manjimaru. For a 1992 RPG, this game is incredible. Decadent, even. There is so much here!
I've played a couple of the other games in the series before, and I had heard a lot of great things about this one. Just never had the motivation to play it, I suppose. I'm glad I finally did, though. I like pretty much everything about this game. The presentation is excellent, with nice cutscenes, battle graphics, and a fantastic soundtrack. The world design is distinctive and interesting, the battles are fast and fun, and you get a decent amount of input in how your characters are set up. The story is engaging, both extremely silly and deadly serious at different points. And there's just so much here. The game just keeps on going, which could be a bad thing were it not for the solid pacing.
This is also the first game I had to unpack the PC Engine Mini for. Up until now I've been playing on the TurboGrafx-16 Mini, but this is one of the two games that is exclusive to the PC Engine model. That makes sense, I suppose. Manjimaru's name has an easily misunderstood kanji in it, and since it was never released outside of Japan the game is completely in Japanese. Not particularly easy Japanese, either. That's the case for some other games that were included in the TurboGrafx-16 Mini line-up, but none of them prominently featured the manji. So I do get it.
Still, this is an awesome game. I'm glad it was included in the PC Engine Mini, because that's the reason I finally played it. As glad as I am to see the Suikoden games make a comeback, I think we all need to lean on Konami a little to do a new Tengai Makyou collection and release it globally. This series deserves a lot more attention.

And now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good.
is god the cat that chases you for fun, someone who pretends benevolence, flicking you away only to sink teeth into your neck while you hold out a begging hand? a cat with a mouse in its mouth. i see, i see, i see.
in thine eyes i saw god and not as the reflection of myself but something i can touch, something that dies— someone i can kill. someone i could love. these knees have dropped, on cold dirt ground, on wooden floor: century-old, on marble floors that make them ache. in thine hands, i’ve left my life and my heart, my soul that was drug back from hell. hands, eyes, smile, light. your wings i crushed like a cruel boy with a dragonfly at the onset of spring. lavender-scent, the smell of my mother’s perfume and it all reeks of a prayer that never ends. i need you, like the steady weight of a gun in my unsteady hands. like the clean water that washes off this blood off my hands yet never fully cleans it. not enough for absolution or forgiveness. i need you like the cedar brown drink. no, i needed you like it. now, i need you like the smell of fresh air on a sober morning. a thumb caressing my own on a winter evening and everything in between.
if god was a cat with a mouse that he chooses to kill then i’m a vine, hugging you close in devotion, in ruination. trying to touch everything you and yet never being able to reach all of you. too less, too little to know you truly but never quittin’ the attempts. so, i will pray to you. the only true sign that god exists. his cruelty is proof enough but your unsmiling lips and your smiling eyes are a better proof of the fact that he was capable of beauty and he poured it all into you. the hands that are gentler than the light of the early morning sun, the voice that could make hell tremble and yet softly call my name. my name feels less like a punishment and more like a poem in your mouth.
i can’t ever be good because i’m always tryin’ to be perfect and my brother’s little head that reached my knee, hugging my leg so close, i have to look up to see his eyes now. little-brother, not so little. if this hand had a weapon—no, this hand is the weapon and that means a weapon raised him and yet, his voice has a softer edge to it and i can’t ever fathom that. i’m always looking down, at the ground, at the barrel of a gun, at the bottom of a drink. searching for things that even a halo can’t illuminate and yet, i have to look up to talk to him. to know his goodness means to believe in my own, to see your holiness is to grasp your hands in mine. i will let myself be good, try to be good because i can’t ever be perfect. knowing that your heavenstring-cut hands will cradle this imperfect hands in your own.
let me be good for you. stay.

PC Engine - Far East of Eden - Tengai Makyo Ziria
Title: Far East of Eden - Tengai Makyo Ziria / 天外魔境 ZIRIA [非売品]
Developer/Publisher: RED / Hudson Soft
Release date: 30 June 1989
Catalogue No.: HCD9005
Genre: RPG
Format: CD-ROM2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tengai Makyou Ziria was one of those killer apps that cemented the status of the PC Engine CD addon in Japan in 1989 and it's easy to see why. The game's opening must have been truly stunning when it was first released. It tells the story of how the warlord Masakado attempted to take over the world of Jipang with an army of demons but was ultimately thwarted by the brave heroes of the fire clan. Skip to several centuries later and it seems demons have appeared once again. Our main character Jiraiya is apparently a descendent of the fire clan and is thus set upon a quest by his master the toad sage to find the other descendants and defeat the demon army once again.
Right off the bat, you can tell that much care went into the animated cutscenes and the voice acting is top-notch. It gives the game a lot of its atmosphere, fleshes out many of its important characters, and makes your party members relatable. There is quite a lot of voice acting, meaning many of the music tracks in the game are chiptunes. These are all well done, though, emulating classical Japanese instruments and tunes well. There is enough variation here to make sure it doesn't outstay its welcome either.
The game world of Jipang is very much based on feudal Japan, featuring many of the same regions and famous locations like Edo, albeit in a different geographical layout. You will travel from town to town basically helping the local feudal lord deal with their demon problem before moving on to the next region. Meanwhile, there are a good amount of region random encounters along the way, with a bit of grinding involved upon entering a region to get your equipment and level up to par. The encounter rate and amount of grinding feels lenient, especially compared to some other RPGs of the time.
The battles themselves can go by quickly or slowly and there's an option to increase text scrolling speed which will make random battles much more enjoyable. Enemy sprites don't have much animation, but they are detailed and there is a wide variety of them. You won't see many palette swaps and there are many different backgrounds based upon the environment the battle takes place in. This genuinely made me curious to see which enemies and backgrounds I would see in a new area. Sadly, the highly detailed backgrounds would not make it into the sequel.
Boss fights are noteworthy because the bosses themselves are incredibly detailed. This is achieved by drawing the boss sprites as an entire background in combat. Which allows for detailed art and animations. Furthermore, bosses usually require a precise strategy or key item which you will have to discover before fighting them. Usually, townsfolk will give you hints to this end, so nothing comes out of left field.
Some mechanics were standard practice at the time that do age the game a little. The I button brings up the menu, which also includes the 'talk' and 'search' options, so you can't search or talk automatically as you would in later RPGs. This is something the sequel fixes. There's also no way of seeing which stat changes a piece of equipment will give you before buying them or even when equipping them, so it's best to save your game before buying any new equipment and be sure to check out your characters' stats before and after equipping something new. This is again something the sequel does fix. Thankfully holding down the II button lets you run, making traversing towns and dungeons much quicker than they would otherwise be.
The way you learn magic in this game is different from other RPGs. Instead of leveling up, finding spellbooks, or buying them in some fashion, the land is riddled with shrines to local spirit animals that serve as guardian deities. These have been sealed by the demon clan and can only be freed by your party members after which they will grant you a new spell. Many of these are optional, but some are mandatory as part of the plot. All of them are useful, however, so it's recommended to seek all of them out. One of the things I found disappointing was that you spend quite a bit of time by yourself before gaining new party members. In fact, you'll gain some temporary allies that you don't directly control in battle, but other than that you'll only gain 3 permanent party members across a 30-hour game.
Overall, the game is fairly big for the time but doesn't outstay its welcome and the storyline is enjoyable, if predictable. The setting and presentation are really what set it apart and it's easy to see why this game blew the minds of Japanese gamers back in 1989. It's interesting to check out for that reason alone. There are guides online to help you get through the game and this game definitely gets a recommendation.
