Where can I start? It’s been a very long time since I’ve bought a game based on a preview video let alone a long time since I’ve bought an RPG based on a preview video. But that’s just what I did with Tengai Makyou. Tengai Makyou by Hudson is one of the few RPG games that I really enjoyed. There’s just something about Hudson’s masterpiece that keeps you coming back for more. Graphically it’s ok but nothing special. Magic Knight Rayearth looks better and that’s older but as we all know good games are not about pretty graphics.
Tengai Makyou gets its charm from its presentation and characters. The presentation is done very well including some if not the best use of Cinepak on the Saturn!! Add the voice driven story plus instantly appealing characters (bar one little git with a wok for a hat) and you have yourself a magnificent game that drawers you are closer and closer each time you play. The game is also full of humor which even non-Japanese players will find funny thanks to a translation guide over at GameFAQS.com.
The one thing that is important with presentation etc. in an RPG is the story line. So far, I’ve been playing Tengai Makyou for 11 hours and I can honestly say that so far, the story while not too serious has been very enjoyably, keeping me on the edge wanting to play just that little bit longer.
A special mention must go to the battle system. While it’s basically your standard turn based RPG battle affair it’s presented in more of an anime style than the traditional small character sprites Vs each other. In this game you don’t even get to see your characters, just their names and power bars. What you do see are full screen animations of the enemies as they attack you. The animation isn’t all that great to be honest but every now and then you’ll be treated to one of your character’s special moves that do look well animated. So, well in fact that you’d swear it was video playing!!
I haven’t touched on the audio yet in this game. As you know it’s fully voice driven thanks to the talents of many popular voice actors and actresses. The real magic however comes from the music. One word describes it, Beautiful.
Get yourself a copy of Tengai Makyou ASAP then print out the English guide written by Lando over at Game FAQs. This is one RPG that all Saturn fans should try out.

Geez it's been almost a year...and I need to admit about this
I can't stop thinking about Tengai Makyou series, I play other RPGs and I still can't get this franchise out of my head. It feels like a never-ending addiction. The first thing that comes to my mind is a narcissistic blonde guy whose voice is very infectious to me...*COF COF* I mean, I think this has become one of franchises of my life. The concept was supposed to be a Japanese "work" misunderstood by the US, but most of the games are so heavily Japanese that it made me more influential in the language, like, I managed to memorize some kanji thanks to these games and I started trying to understand what the characters were saying, like "BOKU GA JIPANGU ICHI NO DATE OTOKO!!"; "WAGARITINI TEKINASHI!". And their designs, stories and soundtrack make my heart warm...as if it impacts me....I managed to beat the original version of Tengai Makyou II in 135 hours and 17 minutes, and it made me so happy even having difficulties in some game events.
I may be going crazy for anything related to ancient Japanese culture that is heavily influenced, and I haven't finished the other "main" games yet, like 4th Apocalypse and Zero, but I intend to finish them someday. I appreciate if you're one of the only people reading this and I hope more people get interested in this franchise and have at least the "main" games in the west.

Tengai Makyou II: Manjimaru (TG-16 Mini)
Tumblr media
Phew.
Phew!
What a game! You might have noticed that my semi-daily updates for TurboGrafx-16 Mini games have slowed down a lot recently, and you can put the blame on Tengai Makyou II: Manjimaru. Normally for these mini-console entries I only spend an hour or two with each game. That's obviously not enough time to finish any RPG, but I've played most of them before anyway. The ones I haven't played rarely grab me in any serious fashion. I had not played Tengai Makyou II: Manjimaru before. Well, after a couple of hours I wanted to play more, and I did. And I kept doing so. And now, seventy-odd hours of gameplay later, I am finished Tengai Makyou II: Manjimaru. For a 1992 RPG, this game is incredible. Decadent, even. There is so much here!
I've played a couple of the other games in the series before, and I had heard a lot of great things about this one. Just never had the motivation to play it, I suppose. I'm glad I finally did, though. I like pretty much everything about this game. The presentation is excellent, with nice cutscenes, battle graphics, and a fantastic soundtrack. The world design is distinctive and interesting, the battles are fast and fun, and you get a decent amount of input in how your characters are set up. The story is engaging, both extremely silly and deadly serious at different points. And there's just so much here. The game just keeps on going, which could be a bad thing were it not for the solid pacing.
This is also the first game I had to unpack the PC Engine Mini for. Up until now I've been playing on the TurboGrafx-16 Mini, but this is one of the two games that is exclusive to the PC Engine model. That makes sense, I suppose. Manjimaru's name has an easily misunderstood kanji in it, and since it was never released outside of Japan the game is completely in Japanese. Not particularly easy Japanese, either. That's the case for some other games that were included in the TurboGrafx-16 Mini line-up, but none of them prominently featured the manji. So I do get it.
Still, this is an awesome game. I'm glad it was included in the PC Engine Mini, because that's the reason I finally played it. As glad as I am to see the Suikoden games make a comeback, I think we all need to lean on Konami a little to do a new Tengai Makyou collection and release it globally. This series deserves a lot more attention.

today, for my first entry, Ignatius. fucking Ignatius. also, fucking Hans. both are costing me more than a handful of Groschen. in the case of the ram, i have expended a tiny fortune in carrots, but this little shit refuses to come my way, so i have to look into how to make him sacrifice himself for the greater cause, JCBP. in case of Hans, i'm a little bit worried about him. yes, i went overboard with my tirade at the pillory (it's just my idea or Henry can say truly nasty things if his speech isn't high enough? happened with poor Bozshena as well - thingee dixit), and a Tavern owner told me about someone like him dealing with some unsavory sort. i just hope the idiot doesn't get hurt, shit. at this point i think both Ignatius and Hans have so much in common, but you can't bring back a lord only with carrots. so in the meantime, i'll try to bite my pride and tongue and work with the ram (as, at least, the beast should be much more workable than a lord), so hopefully Mutt will decide to come after the morsel. i hope it's tasty, for my own sake.
before i left Troskowitz, Svatya apologised to me. i was surprised. after all the problems we caused (and all the people i dropped, if i'm not mistaken, four were on the floor and i could have kept going until, well, you know). He didn't deserve none of what happened, i should have intervened instead of just shouting from the sides. but what can you do, especially at a tavern before noon. from the way i kept talking about Lord Capon he got a bit wary - so he was actually dealing with a lord! i assured him not to worry, no bad blood was drawn.
so the road has been just a thread of worries. maybe i should get back at the forge in Tachov. the blacksmith, even with a temper like his forge, has been nothing but wonderful. i have a small room there, so that's nice. the sounds and sights of the forge have been a bit of a respite. respite from this cursed ram with baritone bleat. And from lords and carrots.
(thingee here. i always wanted to have a game log of sorts, like when i was into Tengai Makyou and i used to snoop Japanese gamer blogs. they had this very fun thing where they uploaded art related to what they did on the game daily. so i gave it a go! i also switched to raster artwork instead of vector so i can draw quicker, so expect looser art instead of fully rendered pieces. hopefully i'll get faster at it. also, sorry for text inconsistencies and typos, i'm writing this out of my ass pretty much lmao)

What we have here is one of the PC Engine's BEST-SELLING games throughout its 12-year life cycle history, and no, that symbol on the katakana is NOT a swastika. King Yomi of the race of Earth, descended from the stalk of the giant Dark Orchid, was finally banished deep underground by the Fire Clan and the seven sacred swords. A thousand years later, a Tycoon with designs on Zipangu breaks the seal and releases Yomi and the Dark Orchid. It is up to the tender boy general and descendent of the Fire Clan, Sengoku Manji-maru, along with his friends, the flamboyant Kabuki Danjuro, the ferociously powerful Gokuraku Taro, and the mysterious, star-crossed Kinu, to stand up to the beasts of the race of Earth. Set in the fictional but distinctively Japanese world of Zipangu, the game's sprawling, out-of-this-world adventures track the hero of the race of Fire as he battles the great demon of the Earth....the game astoundingly sold nearly as many copies as its platform sold consoles. It has enjoyed enduring popularity, long sitting at the top of fan voting in gaming magazines. With over three thousand characters, an all-star cast of narrators including Kyoko Kishida, three hours of narration, twenty thousand map screens, animated sequences around every corner, and the full orchestra sound of Joe Hisaishi, you don't have to look hard to find the many ways in which Tengai Makyo II rewrote the book on RPGs. Each of these elements serves to develop and enhance the human dramas of the game's labyrinthine story.

I was thinking about that fanart of Shirobon and Kabuki with swapped clothes, and, knowing that Kabuki and Kikugoro are rivals, I took the opportunity to draw Kikugoro and Kurobon with swapped clothes too, after all, at the time of PCE Kurobon was Shirobon's rival.
You must be wondering if Kikugoro doesn't really care about wearing this costume, he's literally the same guy who dresses up as a ballerina in Tengai Makyou II and that PC-FX game I forgot the name of
