Heaven's Gate
This article is part of our Japanese Obscurities feature. We put out a whole book about them, which is available as both a full color hardcover and a Kindle ebook from Amazon! If you’d like to see more of these features, please check out the book and if you enjoyed it, leave a five star review so we can do a follow up with even more interesting, offbeat, or historically important Japanese games!
This review was originally published in 32 Bit Library Volume 4, which includes coverage of Atlus’ games for the PlayStation, as well as several import titles. Check it out!
Heaven’s Gate (known as Yusha: Heaven’s Gate in PAL territories) is one of the PlayStation’s many 3D fighting games, this time an arcade port coming from developer Racdym. The company had previously made two other similar looking games, Shadow Struggle and Critical Blow, but while those were 2.5D fighters in the style of Street Fighter EX, Heaven’s Gate takes very heavily after Virtua Fighter. It uses the same three button setup to punch, kick, and guard, you can attack enemies on the floor (or roll out of the way if you’re down), and you can even knock your opponents off the sides of the stage for a quick victory. However, in this game, some stages have ceilings, which you can latch onto and bounce off of using a triangle kick maneuver, and you can hit enemies into it as well. It also features super gauges, here called Sol / Lunar Bars. When it’s filled up, you can activate it, which grants a brief moment of invincibility and lets you use a few extra special moves, including super attacks.

Snowboard Kids 2
Tumblr media
JP release: 19th February 1999
NA release: 1st March
PAL release: 30th April 1999 (AUS only)
Developer: Racdym
Publisher: Atlus
N64 Magazine Score: 86%
Tumblr media
Some sequels try to reinvent the wheel, others try to make improvements on the original while some, like Snowboard Kids 2, just provide more of the same. The first Snowboard Kids was a pretty good game, and so is Snowboard Kids 2. You snowboard through some nice looking levels, using ski lifts to finish a “lap” and use items to hit other racers.
Tumblr media
The story mode feels very much expanded upon, with a little town you can walk around acting as a menu and cutscenes before and after with some silly but fun little animations. In terms of what you actually play, it doesn’t actually change much, so it’s a nice example of how a bit of nice presentation can make something feel much more like a fulfilling experience.
Tumblr media
One of the biggest issues in Snowboard Kids 2 is the track design. The themes are great, and includes space and underwater levels. The problem is the tracks are much flatter, which makes the game extremely slow. The speed issue was present in the first game, but this highlights it even more. Considering the absurdity of the game, the snowboards accelerating on flatter surfaces really shouldn’t be a problem.
Tumblr media
There are a few nice minigames, such as a speed challenge using items and a trick mode. The most interesting was a Paperboy mission where you have to deliver newspapers to houses. Snowboard Kids 2 is in a nicer package than the first, but the lack of speed can just be frustrating.
Snowboard Kids 2 is criminally slow. Yes, we know that speed on your snowboard is dependent on the steepness of the hill. Yes, we know that if you fall or collide with something, you can only accelerate off as gravity allows. WE KNOW THESE TGINS! But in a game where reality gets cast aside with wilful abandon at every opportunity, in the name of things good in gaming, why pick this one law of physics to stick to? In places – particularly after a fall on a flat section – Snowboard Kids 2 is so arse-bendingly slow. It really and truly, purely and simply, utterly and completely MAKES YOU WANT TO SCREAM.
- James Ashton, N64 Magazine #28
Remake or Remaster?
A remake with all the courses with a bit more speed would be great.
Official Ways to get the game
There’s no official way to play Snowboard Kids 2

"Snowboard Kids Remastered Collection" Video Game idea
A few weeks ago, "Snowboard Kids 2" turned 25 years old. I remember first renting this game from Blockbuster. A few years later, I would own a copy of the Nintendo 64 cartridge from a flea market. To this day, I'm surprised that nobody talks about the "Snowboard Kids" games anymore, with Youtube user, Curiomatic discussing how he would envision "Snowboard Kids 3" (Click here to see his video).
Another thing I should point out is that both Nintendo 64 games never made an appearance on the Wii Shop Channel, the Wii U eShop, or even Nintendo Switch Online. Despite the franchise being overlooked, its publisher and developer, Atlus and Racjin (formerly Racdym) are still around. So, what I was thinking of is if we had an HD remaster collection for "Snowboard Kids 1 and 2".
TITLE
"Snowboard Kids Remastered Collection"
ESRB RATING
E
PREMISE
Play through the story mode of "Snowboard Kids 2", with newly animated cutscenes that play for the first game's levels (since story mode wasn't in the first game).
GAMEPLAY
Like the two N64 games, you shred down mountaintops on your snowboard until you reach the ski lift at the bottom of the course. You can perform tricks while jumping off ramps to gain additional coins, and use those coins to spend on item boxes during races.
MULTIPLAYER
While Story Mode is restricted to 1-player, the Multiplayer Mode makes up for that by allowing four players to play locally, with a new online mode for 16-player races and tournament matches. There can also be a boss rush mode for defeating all the bosses from "Snowboard Kids 2".
There's not much else I can think of, but you can also read about my idea by clicking here.

I felt so inspired by Curiomatic’s Snowboard Kids 3 project that I began toying around with some concept screens for boards and (possibly) additional gear/costumes. I’m not super crazy about the header fonts but tried to pick some that resemble older ones. My favorite part is the little snowman border on selected menu buttons! I hope you enjoy :]
