wow! a death note zine how cool let me go check – oh. yet another zine from 2017. never mind.
#genuinely serious when i say that i have a strong desire to mod a zine eventually#i've been making indie zines and selling them at fairs so i know a fanzine would be a much bigger project#but i think our fandom is overdue for a new one...#mellodramattic zine anyone?#death note#zines#fanzines

I'm meeting jodie and mandip at a convention next week! Will definitely be taking the tote bag with me :)
Omg, that’s amazing! They’ve both now got copies of the zine, so hopefully they recognise it when they see it!
#although I feel like Mandip is much more likely to recognise it than Jodie#because Mandip chatted to me about it for ages and had me sign her copy but poor Jodie was just busy and we chatted but she moved on#like mentally she had other things to think about yknow . fair enough#ANYWAY HAVE FUN AT THE CON!!#let me know what they say 👀#doctor who#thasmin fanzine#fanzine#doctor who fanzine#thasmin#doctor who zine#dr who#yasmin khan#thirteenth doctor#dr who fanart

does the milgram team allow fan projects like zines?
It’s a nonprofit for-charity zine, so it’s in the end no different than making a big collection of fanart! I’d assume it’d fall under the laws that allow dojinshis in Japan, but again, it’s non profit and outside Japan!
Questions can be directed @milgramcf too!
#so pretty much it doesn’t matter cause fair use#it’s just like fanart or fanfic#and even merch artists at cons are all good#since it’s not as they’re claiming to be milgram#or making a crazy amount of money#milgram#milgram fanzine#🔄️

hi loch !! i have SUCH a random ask for you. i believe you moderated the Law And Order: A Symmarah Fanzine. i wondered if there was any way to buy the PDF nowadays?
Yup, that was one of my last fanzine projects before COVID hit lol
Unfortunately, due to the nature of for-profit fanzines and payment details for the contributors changing in the years since, I'm unable to offer the fanzine for sale in any form. The art and fanfics were all uploaded online, so I encourage you and other Symmarah fans to check it all out <3
#Law And Order: A Symmarah Fanzine#I cannot in good conscious sell a fanzine without knowing all the contributors can be paid again#a fair few of them have disappeared from public online spaces in the last few years or changed their payment details so it's not possible#sorry about that but the content is all online!!! pls check it out and give the creators all your love

~~~~
FAQ - great questions, keep asking!
Q: What kind of content are we looking for?
A: Answer here!
Quick content info: SFW (PG-PG13) zine focused on Zack Fair. Please read the full content info post here.
~~~~
Q: What are the expectations for contributers (writers/artists)?
A: Creators will be making a brand-new piece(s) for the zine, based on what they think they will realistically be able to complete for the project deadlines (TBD, keep in mind the publishing date is est. early 2025 but can absolutely change). There are no prompts and there is no theme other than Zack Fair. A discord will be created (and staff are always here via asks) to help each other come up with ideas and encourage one another's projects!
In addition, one person may submit up to 4 contributions for the zine, in the form of mix-and-match or the same grouping. I.e. 4 pieces of art, 4 fics, or 2 pieces of art and 2 short-form pieces of writing, etc. These details can be ironed out on an individual basis, and not all pieces may appear in a physical zine.
Finally, pieces for this zine are expected to be kept hidden from public view until the zine is finalized (a.k.a. not posted on any social media or Ao3 except for teasers/ads for the zine, details TBD [do not post any ads on Ao3 they do not allow that]).
~~~~
Q: Are there going to be length limitations?
A: For the digital zine, no, outside of fics being limited to one-shots. If a physical zine gets designed, then those one-shots will be limited to a certain page number TBD.
~~~~
Q: Will proceeds go to charity if this becomes a purchase-only zine?
A: Yes! First, it has to be determined if this is will be a purchased item or not. If it does, then we will pick a charity.
~~~~
Q: Do I get any perks as a contributor?
A: A free digital zine, even if the final edition ends up being purchase-only. Any merch is TBD (we will have to see if funds are available to buy all contributors a copy of a physical zine, if it gets produced).
~~~~
Q: Who is leading the project?
A: So far, just @sherlockwolf. Feel free to browse their tumblr and AO3 (same username) to get a feel for how they interact with FF7!
~~~~
Q: Will the discord have mods?
A: Yes! Once it is set up, there will be a mod application process for 2 additional mods. Details about the discord will be sent out later on to those who are accepted onto the project at the end of September.
~~~~
Q: Are collabs between writers and artists allowed?
A: Absolutely! There is a section in the discord server for this and those collabs will have to be communicated between the involved writer, artist, and project lead.

Realised I never posted the insta promo graphic they made me for KC Zine Con 8

promo graphic from KC Zine Con insta for my virtual table on the website for KC Zine Con 8 - has an image of a dymo label maker (the modern type that looks a bit like an alien from Alien) and some dymo label text strips sitting on a collage of Dennis Wilson, plus the text "Jenna Appleseed Thoughts Of You Fanzine Thoughts Of You, a digital charity fanzine about Beach Boy Dennis Wilson. all profits go to a homelessness charity. 2 issues ft unofficial t-shirts & unusual merch, Dennis as the true surfer of the beach boys, archive interviews, coverage of virtual zinefests (inc KC Zine Con 6 & 7), odd vinyl cover art, thoughts on what Dennis & some of his songs mean to me & fans, cartoons, & dennis' support & connection with homeless people. cw: contains brief mentions of abuse & mental illness. KCZC Virtual Tabler" in all caps on a green background.
Earlier post about the con
and my virtual table is still there with all the others on the con website (search for Jenna Appleseed) https://kczinecon.com/virtual-tables-all

Jazz becoming a walking perch for firelizards is exactly the mental image I needed this morning. If we were in the old days of fanzines, this would be such a popular idea.
I have seriously considered the concept of Jazz landing on Pern. His signature color is blue, and he’s all about music and spying. He’d fit right in at the Harper Hall- well, so long as he can fit into the Harper Hall. I also just think it would be fun for him to have firelizards. Little guys.
I am unfamiliar with what you're talking about but I am very curious

Just saw your post about graphic novels that intrigued you and it intrigued me too. Would you mind sharing which graphic novels have you read that you'd recommend or that affected you in interesting ways? Thank you!
When it comes to graphic novels, I tend to prefer the slightly idiosyncratic, and definitely adult. While I did like The Night Eaters, and Something Is Killing the Children (my first experience really dipping my toe in...) I learned very quickly that (a) I can't do anything with even a whiff of YA, and (b) series are not my forte. But that's okay, because this space also has a lot of artists writing and illustrating for adults, really putting the "novel" in "graphic novel."
I've talked before about Junji Ito and Alison Bechdel, so I won't repeat myself---though I do still love Bechdel's work with the unspoken, prickly edges of things; I think very fondly of that weekend I spent reading badly-translated jpegs of Ito's work, the sense of destabilization and disorientation it left me with.
A list of some other works that stand out, in no particular order:
The Third Person, by Emma Grove, which delves into the experience of someone with multiple identities, each with its own relationship to gender. Especially if you're about to read Catriona Ward's The Last House on Needless Street for book club, I think this should be a required pairing.
If you're looking for something that captures the mundane struggle of making a life (similar to Will McPhail’s In.) there are lots of options! I'd recommend Roaming, by Jillian and Mariko Tamaki, or maybe It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth, by Zoe Thorogood. I think Roaming might be stronger as a narrative, but It's Lonely is an imaginal and imaginative chronicle of that struggle to make a life, make art---though it didn't work for me as a narrative, the visuals stand out to me as beautiful, surreal in exactly the way I like.
I liked The Underwater Welder, by Jeff Lemire, for very similar reasons---the bits about a son trying to grapple with the legacy his alcoholic, semi-neglectful father didn't land, but when the narrator dives deep into the bay and encounters an abandoned ghost town where his own used to be? That was haunting.
If you enjoy Bechdel and Grove's work, then Julia Wertz's Impossible People is similarly a delight, and grapples thoughtfully with the narrator's alcoholism; it just didn't quite land for me in the way I wanted it to.
(Is this where I admit that I did like Blink, by Christopher Sebela et al? It's very old school scifi and almost cinematic in its approach, makes very few apologies for it, but the art is so, so divine.)
One of the most idiosyncratic was Paying for It by Chester Brown; an illustrated manifesto about the values of paying for sex, and the lives of the sex workers the narrator encounters. Honestly the most interesting part of this one was the fact that Brown has clearly thought about this subject a lot, and talked to everyone in his life about it. Some of the afterwords aren't from him---they're from his friends, who watched this from the outside, and share their perspective on how Brown has chosen or defends his approach to sex.
The even better news is that there are lots of DIY artists in this space as well! I have my own favorites close to home, plus I bought multiple copies of the Kentucky Route Zero fanzine, and I was lucky enough to snag some of the work offered as part of the Shortbox Comics Fair.
In particular I loved Stevie B.'s Dr. Limos Plays God (I'm a sucker for a clone identity crisis!), Otava Heikkila's Home by the Rotting Sea (which has some very fun Octavia Butler echoes), Narsid's Last Crane (lovely, and quite sad), and also Ver's Sacred Bodies, which has the dubious distinction of making me think "this better not awaken anything in me" for the first time since Crimes of the Future.
All this to say...graphic novels are neat, I enjoy them, but it's a bit like watching a movie with subtitles. I mostly understand what's going on, but I think I'm missing some of the finer shades and nuances that would take my experience to the next level.
#how do people make art??? we just don't know.#(I have read other good graphic novels they just didn't stand out quite like these;#like Brian Fies' work is lovely; lots of sunday comics (doonesbury; bloom county) resonance with that one#I like David Small too! impeccable linework and the shading; the blue shadows and empty fields are evocative#Sophie Burrows does muted almost-watercolors; very little dialogue; it reminds me of The Snowman#it's just a neat medium! I don't understand it but I like it.)#from the bookshelf
