Ah yes, Dragonslayer. The poster child for "FL NPCs that would be a protagonist in their own game." And yet I didn't find him until I was master rank.

Day 25 - Perpetuity
Rael had seen many impressive and fantastical thing already in their short life, from the deepest corners of the Golmore Jungle and throughout all the lands they had traveled. But never had they seen something that was so terrifying and beautiful at the same time as one of the great wyrms.
On white feathery wings the dragon Hraesvelgr had descended from the sky and his presence alone radiated such an ancient powerful energy that it made Rael’s skin crawl in awe. They could hear him speak aloud, a deep voice in a strange tongue, that sounded foreign and familiar alike. But at the same time it felt like his words echoed in their mind and in their soul and Rael, as well as the others, seemed to understand Hraesvelgr perfectly well.
He didn’t seem aggressive but neither was he particularly friendly. Instead he bluntly told Ysaile what he thought about her fantasy of being Shiva reborn.
“The spirit thou hast summoned belongeth not to Shiva, 'tis but a shade conjured by thine own fancy. In an age long past, mine own kin were guilty of like folly. Beguiled by the dark ones' lies, they attempted to resurrect a king amongst wyrms, who thou hath slain — yet the divinity they called forth merely borrowed the semblance of my fallen brood-brother. Such gods are not summoned, but created. Phantoms spun from the threads of misplaced faith. The spirit you summoned was but thy dream of Shiva. Thy souls hath been corrupted by a deity of thine own making, child.”
Ysaile was visibly shocked by this revelation and the others seemed quite speecheless to. But as horrible as this news was, it had not been what they came here for. So before the dragon would see their conversation as over and rise back into the sky, Rael called out to him.
“Be that as it may, Lord Hraesvelgr, Ysayle's desire to heal the rift between man and dragon is real, and it has borne us this far. We would spare both our kind and yours the ravages of this senseless war! Please join your voice to ours in a call for peace and forgiveness!”
But Hraesvelgr only angrily turned his head towards Rael and made a deep growling sound.
“The tale of thy kind is one of avarice, treachery, and death ─ and thou wouldst speak to me of peace, dragonslayer? The blood of mine brothers and sisters is on thine hands. Old and new blood, thine souls reek of it. Hark thee, mortal, to the naked truth...then tell me thou deservest forgiveness!”
Then the great dragon revealed some truths to them against which the real nature of Shiva paled in comparison.
A thousand years ago, he claimed, the first King Thordan, craving the strength of the dragons eyes, had murdered Ratatoskr — one of the first brood and therefore sister to both Hraesvelgr and Nidhogg. They ate her eyes, to gain the dragons power, and so condemned their descendants to Nidhoggs vengeance and a never-ending war.
Rael could feel that every single of Hraesvelgr’s words was true, no matter how bitterly Estinien argued against it.
And while this truth did nothing to better the ongoing slaughter of innocents, the wrath of the dragons was undeniably justified.
In Rael’s opinion the fact that each of the murderer’s descendants, which likely was almost all of Ishgard, still carried a piece of Ratatoskr‘s essence in them, was pure irony.
All these highly faithful people, the kind as well as the arrogant ones, the so-called heretics and those holy men judging them, were in reality almost dragons themself — only a small drop of blood away from transforming into the very thing they had been taught to hate.
The dragons had been the first victims of this war, and they would never forgive and make peace. This became very clear as Hraesvelgr mourned his sister and explained to them the dragon’s nature of perception and memory.
“The betrayal that yet haunts mine every waking moment is no less than the truth to my kind. Fain would I strike the image from my mind, yet still the scene doth linger ─ of my brood-sister's tattered corpse, defiled by her Elezen allies. Thou thinkest in mortal terms. Our perception of time is too broad for thee to grasp. For a wyrm such as Nidhogg, however, that history is yet part of his present, as fresh as the blood that did gush from Ratatoskr's wounds. How could he not be driven mad?”
Rael realised that he was right and that Nidhogg would never be appeased by apologies or compensation. For as long as he felt the pain and rage over his sister’s death, which was forever, he would return again and again to let Ishgard feel his vengeance.
But if their mission of peace was destined to fail, what other option remained. Estinien would certainly suggest slaying Nidhogg, but neither did Rael wish death upon the dragon nor did they think his kin would not want to avenge him and wage war against Isgard even more furiously. They would have to slaughter each and every single one of Nidhogg‘s kin to end this conflict, a thought that made Rael nauseous.
While the Viera still tried to desperately find another solution, A‘viloh did something entirety unexpected. Unexpected and reckless.
In fear Rael held their breath as the small Miqo’te slowly stepped forward, closer and closer to the giant dragon. Soothingly A‘viloh raised his arms as Hraesvelgr turned his head towards him with a threatening growl, his sharp teeth bared.
But the Miqo’te didn’t flinch away.
Instead he looked at the dragon and rested a hand on one of his curved horns. Slowly his arms reached around it, as far as he could, in the closest thing to an embrace he could offer. Then he rested one side of his head against the dragons horn and closed his eyes.
„I am so sorry.“, he said, while everything else was deadly silent.
None of them had even thought of offering apologies or condolences to Hraesvelgr, guilty or not. His tale a cruel one, shocking even, but still so distant to them. Little could they understand his pain. Only A'viloh had found the compassion and bravery to at least try to comfort the giant dragon.
For a moment no one dared to speak or move. Then the great wyrm huffed deeply, which made the Miqo’te loosen their grip and look up, while his long red hair was whirled around by the dragons breath. Rael could already imagine Hraesvelgr razor-sharp claws and teeth tearing poor, silly A‘viloh to shreds.
Instead the great wyrm slowly raised his head again and spoke a little more calmly than before.
„Thine words are meant well, mortal, but they could never soothe my pain or my wrath. It is only by the calming embrace of Shiva‘s soul that mine own fury hath not consumed me. But let us speak no more of what is done. My faith in your kind is spent, and I would be alone.“
Then without another sound he unfurled his wings and rose to the sky. Stunned they watched him vanish between the clouds. Only then Rael dared to breathe again.

My Souls Hot Takes
Decided to write up a couple of my less popular opinions for souls games. Please don't get upset over any of these, if you disagree that's totally valid
Dark Souls 1:
Bell Gargoyles is my favorite base game boss
I don't like Ornstein and Smough that much
Gwyn's theme is nowhere near as sad or dramatic as its made out to be in my opinion
Painted World isnt fun to me at all
Tomb of the Giants isnt that bad
I miss the whimiscal 80s fantasy aesthetic the series lost in the following entries even if i understand it narratively
Dark Souls 2:
I'm not just a hater or fail to appreciate an underrated gem, I simply dont enjoy this game
I think Darklurker is mid and the runback gimmick is stupid
The world and lore arent that much better to me than any other souls games and dont save the game
Life Gems are actually pretty okay
Old Dragonslayer is really not that big of a deal
Royal Rat Vanguard is the single worst boss in souls to me
Fume Knight is just kinda alright to me, I enjoy Sir Alonne much more
The health cap loss fucking sucks i hate it
Its perfectly fine to both love and hate this game please calm tf down
Dark Souls 3:
Soul of Cinder isnt that exciting, I might just be biased though bc i started the DS games with 3
Jailers arent that bad, Thralls are way worse
Ancient Wyvern kinda funny tbh
I really really dislike Sister Friede
The random wolf guy in ariandel is the wost boss in 3
Corvian Knights are the coolest enemy in the trilogy
The game isnt actually as ugly and monotone as people say
Pontiff Sulyvahn is sooooo mid to me I could not care less for his parry bait jojo stand ass goofy fight
Yhorm is such a nothing boss without the siegward narrative to me
Demon Prince solos literally any other duo boss and its not even close
R1 and O spam is a dark souls staple to me, not DS3 exclusive at all
Dragonslayer Armor and Oceiros are insanely underrated
Sekiro:
Demon of Hatred actually slaps
Corrupted Monk actually slaps
Great Shinobi Owl is really mid to me, too gimmicky
Guardian Ape has the same issues as DoH just to a lesser extend
The 2 giant beast (serpent and carp) area hazards are so good
Souls should give underwater another shot imo
Most of the minibosses are kinda bad to me
Bloodborne:
Laurence is actually peak
Not really a fan of Maria's fight, gonna replay the game soon to see if it'll finally click
Winter Lanters are pretty cool
Micolash fans are weird why are there so many
Yharnam Sunrise is the most boring ending of any souls game
As much as i would love it, I cant feasibly see a logical contuination of the Bloodborne universe
Saw Spear mid idc
Chalice Dungeons are both infinitely better and worse than people say I really dont know how to feel about them
Simon's Bowblade is one of the coolest weapons in fiction
Elden Ring:
Morgott is underrated
Dragons are underrated
Placidusax's theme is kinda eh to me
Radahn and Malenia are equal, both fandoms can stfu, it said fought to a standstill for a reason
Rykard is genuinely a good fight even with the gimmick in mind
I don't care for vyke, frenzy, shabriri or any other madness hoobla
I hate using great spears so much
Summons are VALID. If they were cheating they wouldnt be in the game. Get over yourself
Idc how much you can counter it I dont like malenia's waterfowl dance and health regain
Godskin Duo isn't that bad, the REAL enemy is valiant gargoyles
Royal Revenants, Birds and Runebears at least have the decency to be rare... Imps and Lobsters though
Volcano Manor is underrated as fuck, such a unique level for a souls game with so much cool lore and visual flare

Lets pitch Fantasy Double Features
I was thinking abouts possibly doing Fantasy film Double Features....And I wanna showcase a few I thought of and wanna see if you guys can think of some fantasy films that pair well together
Rules:Films must be fantasy and there must be some thematic pairing .No "I like this movie and I like this movie" gotta sell me why the films go good together
Ill go first
VIle Villains and Visual Splendor :Dark Crystal and Legend -Before CG these might be two of the most gorgeous fantasy films ever made, showing the beauty of practical effects while also both containg iconic baddies ,in the forms of the Skeksis and the Lord of Darkness
Low and High:Conan the Barbarian and Willow ,two contrasting films one a great showcase of Low Fantasy the other a great showcase of High Fantasy
Power of Storys :the Neverending Story and the Princess Bride.VEry diffrent tales ,an Apoclypse in a world of magical cretures and the other a romantic swashbuckling comedy ,but both being united by being tales read by/to a child and both celebrations of storytelling
Transformation:The Last Unicorn and Howls Moving Castle .Now the obvious connection is the studio that made Last Unicorn ,Topcraft would go on to become Studio Ghibli which made Howls Moving Castle.....But thats boring .I think what connects these two is both are about a protagonist trying to figure out something but at the center are both are transformed and how each protag deal with that diffrently
Dragon:Foe or Friend :Dragonslayer and Dragonheart :Both are films where magic is dying from the world, both have effects by ILM ,but the major fantastical element the dragon is protrayed very diffrently :One a vicious monstrous beast the other a lovable heroic intelligent character, one brought to life by stop motion the other CG
D&D :Dungeons & Dragons and Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves .D&D is one of the most beloved Tabletop RPG's ever ,so there is infinite possibilities to what a film based on it can be ,and thus twenty years apart you get these two very diffrent takes on D&D
Tests and Quests:Pans Labyrinth and Green Knight .So while diffrent types of fantasy at the heart of both is a mysterious non human (Played wonderfully by Doug Jones and Ralph Ineson respectfully )putting the protagonist to a test

((Annalise is the star at the hunters group secret ren-faire. Hunters are incredible nerds and they have one secret renfaire where they can pretend to have a full on fantasy ren-faire where people can *actually* cast fireball. It’s like 3/4’s renfaire 1/4 LARP session. (Some groups use it for Larping). Annalise is the star because she can bring an actual dragon and, because it’s hers, she gets to ‘slay’ the dragon every year.
She will not let anyone else slay squeakers. She will remain the queen dragonslayer for life.))

what is love? a dream. a little lois lane, clad in the little prep school skirt she hates, waiting. of course her father would never dream to be on time, so here she stands. nine. a happy age, other kids played with barbies, read fairytales. dreamt of love. yet the purple hued irises of lois lane found comfort in a love for writing. doodles. what is love? a lie. this prom dress is too tight, these pictures too uncomfortable. she hates this. (secretly, she can enjoy it — but lois lane cannot exist to feed a man's ego. she can't listen to her date talk about his life like she cares. don't you see, one day i'll be on every billboard? don't you see — i'm meant for more than this. for more than you.) what is love? lex luthor treats her like a possession. she exists as the pretty thing on his arm & it works, for a bit. lois notices it becomes remarkably easy to get what you want when you're the eye of the most powerful man in metropolis. until he suddenly thinks he can buy off your stories. until he expects something in return. what is love? a weakness.
until he comes. superheroes are fantasy, akin to dragonslayers and knights and all those books she hated. but then he picks her up, holds her tight and flies her to the sky and suddenly she understands. why romeo died for juliet. why rapunzel waited in that tower for her prince to come. superman's eyes stare into hers, his knuckles against her lips. soft hands for a savior.
❝ i'm not asking for a bodyguard clark. ❞ oh how wicked she feels, clad in her nightgown on the balcony as lois looks up at him. its so intimate — so foreign. to call him clark when he adorns that S. her S. her superman, her star, her story. all hers. ❝ — are you coming to bed? it's late. i've missed you. ❞
what is love? a love letter to clark joseph kent.
i won't let anyone hurt you. clark kent for lois lane. ♡ @astraheros

#HARPERSMOVIECOLLECTION
2024 MOVIE LIST
www.tumblr.com/theharpermovieblog
I re-watched Dragonslayer (1981)
Saw this as a kid, my brother loved it, but I don't remember it.
After his master is killed, a sorcerer's apprentice takes up the task of slaying a dragon.
Director Mathew Robbins directed two other memorable movies from my childhood, "Batteries Not Included" and "The Legend Of Billy Jean". Much like Dragonslayer, they are movies I know I've seen, but which I don't remember.
Actor, and star of this movie, Peter MacNicol is an actor I've always enjoyed and is the main factor that drew me back to this film.
The 1980's are full of medieval fantasy films. From low budget trash like "Hawk The Slayer" and "Yor" to high budget Hollywood films like "Legend" "Conan The Barbarian" and "LadyHawke". The popularity of things like Dungeons and Dragons and Lord Of The Rings in the 1970's may have been the cause of this burst in the film genre. Whatever the reason, Fantasy films were big business in the 80's and therefore there are many, many, MANY of these films from the era. And, most of them, despite what nostalgia tells us, are hot garbage.
However, the few that are genuinely good are some of the best the fantasy genre has to offer. Dragonslayer is one of the good ones.
Personally, I didn't develop a real admiration for this genre until much more recently in my life. I liked Fantasy films well enough, but I didn't go out of my way for them. (I was a horror kid.) So, re-experiencing a lot of these films, especially from this era, has been a real joy. I get to see them with somewhat fresh eyes and the appreciation that comes with my understanding of film production and competent storytelling.
Dragonslayer is one for the nerd in us all. By casting Peter MacNicol as a small, somewhat capable sorcerer, this movie immediately becomes a film for the kids who wanted to be wizards and who wanted to fight dragons with magic and cunning, rather than pure Conan-like strength.
This is a well shot film, with a lot going for it visually. The sets, locations and lighting all blend effectively to help immerse us in it's world.
The acting is top notch, the writing is on point and the special effects are still magnificent. While you won't find much new ground being tread here, you get a solid and entertaining fantasy film.
Not much else to say, but in this case, that's a good thing.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Review
I originally wasn’t too interested in seeing Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves but much like with Over the Garden Wall I was pleasantly surprised after I had heard many good things about it and finally checked it out for myself.
The tipping point to make me finally check out the movie was when someone said it was essentially “Jaskier the movie.” Jaskier (often translated to Dandelion) is my favorite character from The Witcher novels and Netflix TV series (The novels are Polish, the show is American / UK made).
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among thieves has nothing to do with the previous films (and animated series) with Dungeons and Dragons in or as the title. This is a stand-alone movie, just set in the same world as those other stories. You do not need to have seen any previous Dungeons and Dragons movies or played the role playing game to be able to follow this movie. The movie has the atmosphere of a fun high fantasy film from the 1980s. Someone described it as being the Dungeons and Dragons version of Pirates of The Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. And they’re right. It does have the same vibe.
This is very much a high fantasy. I define high fantasy as a fantasy story set in its own world with its own cultures and social norms and this his definitely a high fantasy in the common tradition of resembling the middle ages.
I used to think it trite that so many fantasy stories are set in the middle ages but some years ago I came up with the theory that worlds that have magick as a crutch would be slower to technologically develop. After all necessity is the mother of invention. If magick is there you don’t need to invent a lot of the technology our own world relies on and so the culture would be slow to progress. Though I admit to having a soft spot for the rare high fantasy story set in a world that resembles The Victorian Era (late nineteenth century). Carnival Row is a good example of that rarity known as Gaslamp fantasy.
The main protagonist of Dungeons and Dragons: Honor among thieves is Edgin who is sort of a spy or secret agent known as a “Harper” who poses as a bard. He eventually decides that the selfless life isn’t as rewarding as he hoped and he gets a bit greedy, which unfortunately leads to disaster for him and his friends. But they are actually honorable and set out on a quest to rescue Edgin’s daughter and stop the scheming of a former ally and a Red Wizard. There’s a lot of humor and heart and though parts of it are predictable (such as what the tablet of re-awakening would end up having to be used for) it was still fun and enjoyable. I liked it. It stirred fond memories of similar movies like Willow, Dragonslayer, or LadyHawke and other beloved fantasies from the 1980s. My favorite scenes are the interrogation of the dead (though I sort of guessed how it would go). And the single-person transformation chase with the Teifling.
I genuinely think Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves had better writing and more likable characters than the ones in The Witcher: Blood Origin. This is what The Witcher: Blood Origin should have been like. Instead The Witcher: Blood Origin tried too hard to be dark and edgy and lost all sense of fun. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves remembered the fun.
It was nostalgic and good. Not the greatest movie ever but fun one and I’d happily watch it again.
If I were to have any complaint it’s two petty things.
1. I had to Google it to make sure the children from the 1980s Dungeons and Dragons cartoon (who make a cameo in this as live action characters) were not killed. The movie does not make it clear they survive but the director says they survived, he did not kill them off. 2. I think they could have done a better job with the movie poster. It’s pretty generic.
But as I said, I liked it. It’s a good, fun, popcorn movie. It’s a bit predictable at points and I wouldn’t have minded a new twist such as Edgin actually being able to bring back his wife (because I’ve seen the “almost resurrected a loved one but didn’t” plot done to death). It’s still a fun movie though and very nostalgic in nature.

Fantasy Life i returning characters
These might be a bit spoilery (thus under cut), but all of them are from the 2nd trailer for the game. Also, blurry because capping from a fast-moving video, and some shots are pretty darn tiny.
Duglas (Miner master)
Pierre and Butch
Monika (woodcutter)
Princess Laura
Hazel (magician/wizard) top left, Fern (hunter master) bottom right
Taylor (tailor life)
Isaac (angler)
Odin (Monika is behind him)
Glenn (Dragonslayer in the East Grassy Plains) is also very prominent, but I keep forgetting to get a screenshot of him. Also, I missed Woody’s sister (whose name changes depending on which version of the game you have), there are a few plushlings (one looks like Spoolie) and somebody has mentioned they might have seen Yuelia!
