here we go, off the top of my head:

UFO just means unidentified flying object. Anyone who's been a pilot in as many places and situations as Tommy has seen objects in flight they haven't been able to identify, whether it's an experimental craft or a weird drone, or even just a weather balloon that caught the light wrong. 

The thing he sees crash to earth in the middle of his solo camping trip to Joshua Tree after he blows up his relationship with Abby is none of those. He's well off the beaten track, a little too far through fall for there to be many people around even in the official campsites, so he doesn't know whether anyone else witnessed the object - an almost perfect sphere glowing silver against the night sky, getting bigger at a rate that indicates a velocity that makes his head spin just trying to calculate it, darting back and forth with a degree of control that shouldn't be possible for several long moments before it seems to flicker and plummets earthward. 

He's travelling light so it only takes him five minutes to break camp and quick-march in the direction of the resulting explosion. When he gets there it's to twisted metal and a ring of blue-tinged fire with untouched earth in the middle of it, and in the middle of that is a figure, dressed in a silverish flight suit, tall and lithe and pale skinned, blinking open eerily blue eyes. The voice it speaks in has strange resonances, and there are mottled marks like birthmarks across its brows and temples, down to the sides of its throat, disappearing into the high, stiff collar. Those things aside, Tommy thinks he could pass it on the street and not give a second glance other than for the reasons he's just coming to terms with.

The first thing it says before the mangled remains of its technology kicks in and starts translating sounds like Ehv'ahn, and the name it eventually gives him is frankly unpronounceable, so Tommy calls him Evan. 

That's about as far as they get before the lights of several black SUVs appear on the horizon, and they start to run.

They're perfect, it's delightful, I wish it had a hundred seasons all of them as Lightcannon-coded as this.

I'm amazed this exists and I'm amazed it's as Lightcannonish as it is despite being exclusively made for the Chinese market and never translated into English.

A modern-fantasy-AU-Runeterra slice of life zany hijinks comedy animated show where Lux is the protagonist? And Jinx is her best friend? And THEN THEY WERE ROOMMATES?

And sure, Ez exists, and there are Ezlux crumbs in one scene if you squint (though they spend most of the one private conversation they have talking about Jinx) and he's an endearing goober who ends up with a hilarious dynamic with Jinx in the final episode I won't spoil if you haven't seen it. Something I didn't know I needed in my life.

And there's sure a lot of this.

...which I am totally taking as the canon ending of the show, btw. No one can convince me otherwise. So even if there's never another season of Valoran Town, at least we'll always have Valoran Town. 💛💙 I'm just so happy this exists.

I just recently read Buried Treasure by InfeffableToreshi and I really liked it, would love those kinda vibes if you can find it in other fics. I also read an Omegaverse royalty fic where Az pretends he can’t speak Crowleys language, not a huge fan of omegaverse but smth like that would be good too. You know what- I am TIRED of batfam fantasy aus with Damian as a dragon or Bruce as a vampire!

Like yes I understand logistically it’s most fitting but come on let’s get creative! I am tired of searching and searching for a fic that isn’t: Damian-dragon, Jason-wearwolf, dick-mermaid, ect.

I think it’d be fun to play around with species soooo this is MY submission on what I think a cool dynamic for a fantasy au would be

Bruce: either human or a shapeshifter creature- i think a fun dynamic for him could be that he doesn’t have a clue that his kids have magic and have hijinks or have it be like when your kid comes out as gay so you do as much research as possible, like he’d be overly supportive

Dick: I think he’d be SICK as an angel or demon- extra points if you have him being originally human but he died after the circus act with his parents and came back as an angle or demon somehow

Jason: as much as I actually like werewolf Jason I think this man could be really good as gargoyle- I just think of all the fics where his favorite spot is next to the gargoyles and that it’d be cool if he had some kind of manic connection with them maybe from the pit??? If not a gargoyle I don’t think we get zombie Jason enough.

Steph: an human witch- humans aren’t typically capable of old manic witchcraft but Stephanie is doing her damn best! She’s constantly making up her own types of spells to cause chaos or blowing up her room when an ancient ritual goes awry.

Tim: a poltergeist- usually ghosts aren’t seen just like how Tim for the longest time felt forgotten or not seen, he eventually found out how to move and touch things and over time the residents at Wayne manor noticed the little shadows occupying their home that would take photos of them.

Cass: dragon- I KNOW I said I wasn’t a fan of the dragon thing but I think it could be fun for Cass. Most of the time dragons are big and powerful and loud but Cass is known for being small and sneaky and quiet- no less powerful of course. She always lends a scale or two to Steph for any spell she needs and takes her claim on the bats VERY seriously.

Duke: light elemental- I feel cliché saying this but I don’t read enough Duke to put him as anything else. I think he’d control light with his hands as though he was reflecting it off a mirror, occasionally you can find him just faceplanting on the ground outside because he gains power from the sun.

Damian: faerie or harpy- I so often see him as some big scary creature but I think it’d be such an interesting story to see him portrayed as a more small and friendly known species like a fae only for him to be tough as a nail. As a most fae he has trouble with hoarding tendencies and GREATLY enjoys playing tricks and deals on people- Tim once made the mistake of shaking hands with him in a bet and shudders anytime the memory is brought up. Being a far could fit his character well. He’s small but strong in his own way and god forbid you cross a fae especially a tricky one

I'm finally done with this! That last page took me ages to finish. I could have just done a crowd in a void like everyone else, but noooo, my brain had to insist on making an actual background.

I really like how I rendered these, though. I'm thinking that it might be the style I use for the main TTAU comic when I get to that point.

Cannot wait to get started actually interacting with other AUs in the @tmntaucompetition! The hijink potential of taking characters from a vaguely medieval fantasy setting and having them interact with characters from a more modern setting is going to be so fun to work with!

Cozy low stakes fantasy. Like coffee shop AU but with potions. Absolutely adorable, makes you giggle and kick your feet. If you liked Legends & Lattes, this is for you. Might be little spicy? Can't remember.

This on the other hand is very happy and so stupid, in the best way. Fake amnesia and forced proximity with obvious hijinks. This does require reader some suspension of disbelief (because one can NOT throw a company wide christmas party WITH CATERING in LONDON, two days before christmas.) but you are so fuzzy and warm that its okay.

The Green Creek -series by TJ Klune Wolfsong / Ravensong / Heartsong / Brothersong

Do you love werewolves but do not really enjoy ABO dynamics? Can you stomach some pseudo science regarding wolf packs and alphas? Good news, this series is incredible! It will make you cry and curse 'stupid sexy werewolves'. Klune is my favorite author and this is my favorite book series, I can not recommend it enough.

Big Bad Wolf -series by Charlie Adhara The Wolf at the Door

More werewolves without ABO? Here you go! Adhara's werewolf books are solidly very good, hot and also have pretty good crime solving. Two grumps try to solve a crime and one of them might or might not be a suspect!

I can also recommend the Monster Hunt spin-off series.

The Turners series by Cat Sebastian The Ruin of a Rake / The Lawrence Browne Affairs

Historical romance all the way! Cat Sebastian is always reliable on this front so pretty much all of her books are good. I did not add the first book of the series here, because I liked it less than these two, but it still a solid read! Warning for period typical homophobia but is very minor and all of these obviously have happy endings. Spicy.

In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan

This book took me by a surprise. I had very different expectations for this and it just threw them in the trash. If you want that Hogwarts-ish feeling without transphobia, this scratches that itch! Also some brilliant trope reversals and you have to on occasion face some uncomfortable feelings yourself. And the romance is very adorable. Not spicy.

Cemetary Boys by Aiden Thomas

Sometimes you accidentally summon a ghost and it won't go away and then you fall in love with him. Happens to everyone. Very good read about family, gender and acceptance. Transman as a main character. Not spicy.

IM SO NORMAL ABOUT HIM

In my headcannon Skyfire doesn’t fight for the Autobots instead acting like a cargo carrier or emergency escape.

THOUGH in the aus its as follows

Human bound

Kind of a fluffy au.. with a bit of angst

The humans found him first. Skyfire is experiencing the hyjinx as the military scratches their heads at a transformer who knows nothing about the autobots and deceptions.. literally saying and I quote. “Oh no that must be another species you are speaking of??? Im a Cybertronian from Cybertron!” Since he is pre cybertron war I believe.

We get to see a lot of cute moments where he learns about humans. Bonds with the scientists and tells them about the golden age of Cybertron.. seeing the quirks he provides.. like listening to earth music like its the best hit ever, sleeping on the ceiling in his plane mode… lmao.. and how he came to the planet at the age of the dinosaurs.. crashed and lost his energon cargo.. tried to search for it in the snow.. only to run out of fuel and go on recharge mode in a glacier. Which froze over and kept him sealed until global warming.

Soon the autobots and deceptions find out about the military keeping a secret transformer in their ranks. Idk who gets there first.. hijinks ensue tho.. and he kinda gives them the. “No I wont fight in your stupid war fuck off im gonna live with the humans..” Researching the planet and its inhabitants.. avoiding the decepticons.. and kinda allowing the autobots to visit while living his sciencey fantasy. Most of his decisions to avoid both parties is because of the horrid news that Cybertron is essentially dead..He blames it on both parties tbh..

Skyfall

Now to THE FUCKED UP SHIT! ITS ALL ANGST!WE DIE LIKE PRIMES!

the decepticons find him first… instead of the autobots saving him and the humans.. He is forced to kill them.. and is tortured with dark energon.. though that probably is a really bad idea to force a huge tranformer to take on this burden.. He gains information on Soundwave and Shockwave.. who have interesting capabilities.. stealing their findings before being saved by the autobots.. Though he is forced to fight.. and keep up.. unfortunately that leads to him killing starscream in rage.. for not helping and freeing him.. corrupted by dark energon and Unicrons force.. he is directed to kill all Autobots and Decepticons.. using his advanced understanding of tech to kill most of both groups.. and rising unicron to finish the planet off.. and his life..

Shithead McGee jr that’s so fucking funny (can I use that later?), but I got a slightly different idea.

I want to reuse popular sbi tropes and turn them on their head. Basically, evil royal sbi au (excluding techno) where Dream is an enderdragon who they hold captive because he’s “evil” (dragons have reputations of being powerful, dangerous, and thereby a threat).

Dream isn’t constantly held in a cage because he’s got binding curses all over his body. I’m thinking that his magic is used by the empire for like, imperialism.

Techno is an immortal warrior who split ways from Phil after disagreeing on how to better the world. He actually met and was friendly with Dream several decades ago (dragons live a long time).

Techno only came back to the empire as a representative to a Nether-Overworld mix commune to negotiate terms of neutrality. He knows that Phil doesn’t want to fight him and has a soft spot for him even after everything.

At the castle is when he sees Dream again.

But this is a totally unserious au, just look at the premise. Wacky hijinks and melodrama is completely on the table. This au is purely For The Bit. Just like Techno

Or: Tanjirou is a witch's apprentice with a bad habit of bringing home strays. Genya is a young man who's been called a monster so many times, he's started to believe it.

Genya letting himself to be loved, Tanjirou learning that he can also want things for himself. Just beautiful.

Tanjirou arrives at the castle looking for answers. His host will only give him more questions. What is Genya hiding?

Yes, it’s the self-promo part. We had werewolf Genya and now we have vampire Genya in some very gothic and dramatic romance.

hating on an annoying insta author bc i’m a bitch: page powars part 1

prefacing this with saying that i don’t think this person is bad or problematic, just extremely annoying and fulfills my need to indulge in haterism. so don’t harass the author or anything

the instagram algorithm was so kind as to introduce me to an instagram author named page powers. he is currently promoting his book “and they were roommates” (yes it’s named after an outdated vine meme, already off to a great start). rest under the cut bc it’s long

the premise of his book is that the mc dates a guy, the two of them break up, the mc realizes he is trans and transitions to male, and then after some unspecified amount of time they are paired up as roommates at school, and the guy doesn’t recognize mc. this is all that i have learned about the plot or characters from page’s insta other than that it’s SO GAY and TRANS and the love interest is “howl-inspired” (howl of moving castle fame ofc) i do not know anything else about this book or other characters.

oh and one other thing. based on this information how old would you guess the characters are? my guess would be 18, right? like they dated freshman year hs, broke up sophomore year, mc transferred out and began transitioning junior year which gives him enough time to become unrecognizable from what he looked like when he dated love interest. then they happen to go to the same college and are assigned to be roommates. hijinks ensue.

well if you made that very reasonable guess you would be WRONG! they are FIFTEEN! which makes so much less sense. my guess is they started dating at 13, broke up at 14 and within like a year somehow mc was already unrecognizable? i also think no 15-year-old can realistically be howl-esque. and i’m sorry but this whole plot is less impactful this way bc a middle school relationship is not a real relationship.

also what age demographic would this even be for? i feel like most ya readers want to read about characters slightly older than them, especially when it comes to romance. so would this be for 13-14 year olds? but i feel like 13 to 14 year olds aren’t interested in this kind of modern-au-fanfiction-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off kind of stuff. they like romance, yes, but usually with other sci-fi or fantasy aspects. was i just an insufferable tomboy or was nobody into pure, modern romance before the age of 15-16? i feel like people don’t get into fanficesque books until they are at least 15 and interest in that kind of stuff probably peaks in late teens early 20’s. and this may not be universal but i feel like younger adults reading this kind of wish fulfillment or fanfic-y romance usually want to read about characters their age or older, because they want to imagine they can look forward to a storybook romance. it’s why all those ali hazelwood not!reylo books are about like grad students.

so who is served by making the characters 15? it would make more sense and probably have wider appeal if they were 18 i feel. the author is clearly way above 15 (i don’t know his exact age but i’m guessing like. 27) so i don’t see why it would be easier to write about kids. i’ll get into this later but i also don’t think that it was originally fanfiction about 15 year old anime boys, more likely it’s 20-something dudes from a gacha game. i don’t think this choice is problematic per say just baffling. or maybe i’m just out of touch and there is a market for stories about 15 year olds among the fanfiction-as-literature crowd. i guess heartstopper is a thing.

had a carcar AU kicking around for a while which could be summed up as:

oscar, a squire for hire, goes on a paid mission to rescue a prince. he just doesn't expect the prince to be so utterly ungrateful about it. possible tags: AU – royalty, AU – fantasy, getting together, hijinks and ridiculousness, misunderstandings, definitely a good amount of pining, and also a lot of squabbling, road trip but make it vaguely medieval and they barely tolerate each other, also think of it as princess bride except they just snipe at each other the whole time except when they have to join forces to swordfight a common enemy, (one enemy is fred vasseur a wronged former court jester who jumps out of a tree riding toto wolff who is literally wolf), happily ever after

maomao high school au based on the april fools joke

it’s one of those stories where not only do the rich kids bully the scholarship students, they have a codified system of hazing and making poor kids act as gofers. maomao gets assigned to gyokuyou’s clique and instead of tasting their food for poison she always gets them the drinks from the good vending machine before anyone else can buy them bc she knows the restocking schedule

gyokuyou truly thriving in this au as the popular girl who’s materialistic but still kind-hearted. I think that’s what she was born for more than being an imperial consort. she always wears her uniform in a more stylish way that’s against the dress code and the teachers are like “oh you” bc her dad is a huge donor to the school and they can’t do shit

xiaolan latches onto maomao as soon as she transfers and is like “us scholarship students gotta stick together!” and maomao’s like “she’s not in my special class for scholarship students… she must be here on an athletic scholarship.” xiaolan doesn’t get why maomao is always trying to get out of gym class but she helps in exchange for maomao helping her with homework. when they run the mile she comes bouncing over to maomao like “guess what? coach ah-duo said that was a personal best!” and maomao weakly gives her a thumbs up where she’s bent over trying to catch her breath

shisui is also in maomao’s special scholarship class but they don’t really talk until they’re both lurking in the courtyard after school and their hands meet when maomao tries to grab a poisonous plant and shisui tries to grab a bug sitting on it. shisui cuts class a lot and her and maomao are bad influences on xiaolan who’s like “guys… we could lose our scholarships over this…” but maomao is fully prepared to rules lawyer the terms of the scholarship

the emperor is the school principal and jinshi is attending school under a fake name bc the emperor is his dad and he was scandalously young when jinshi was born. I’m excising the previous emperor from this au bc I don’t need a weird pedophile around the high school hijinks. instead of being a eunuch the thing that leaves him as a mere fantasy in the eyes of the girls is that he’s just from a minor branch family :/ they could have a fling with him but these are high class girls and they’re looking for high class husbands. he keeps following maomao around trying to save her from the cruel bullying which she doesn’t actually care about 

lihua is another of the school’s famous four beauties and maybe instead of her baby dying from lead makeup her cat gets sick from her perfume and maomao diagnoses it. she tries to give maomao some of her clothes as thanks but maomao is like *staring at her boobs* senpai I don’t think your dress will fit me

lishu is a first year who’s considered one of the four beauties bc she’s just so damn cute but some of the other girls bully her bc she was privately tutored her whole life instead of attending school and is very sheltered. loulan is a cool beauty who’s even worse about the dress code than gyokuyou but even more untouchable. ah-duo is controversially considered by some to be one of the school beauties but others are like “dude that’s the gym teacher”

the quack doctor is the school nurse and maomao always barges into his office during her free period to do his job for him. she’s on his computer ordering supplies with the intention of skimming a little off the top

in canon maomao doesn’t seem to care much about money but I think in a modern setting where she had more access to goods and services she would be running a business at school raking in the cash from the rich kids
