"Usagi versions" fancomic draft

Made this yesterday morning bc I wanted to draw other versions (fan designs) of Yuichi Usagi, been meaning to from before, but then it devolved into a comic draft. I like how this came out x3

The joke is basically that, after falling through a transdimensional rift, Usagi finds himself in a room with other Yuichi Usagi versions. A reference to how the usagi chronicles/rottmnt crossover joint fandom makes up a lot of their own Usagis, either based on the show (Yuichi Usagi), the comic, the other animated versions or just make up a new Rise version for their own fanworks. Although the show version is one of my favourite characters, I always thought that making fandesigns and AUs is really fun and creative in other fandoms I've been in. I'm too lazy to make one myself and like the canon version just fine, but it's cool seeing what other fans do with the concept!

Yup, not much else, but it was fun to draw and come up with things for them to say or do x3

Anyway I just thought it would be a fun excuse to make a fancomic and possibly draw those multiple versions one day, but the comic thumbnailing became too fun so I forgot to use specific versions in the comic. like you can see one page just has a sketch with notes on it referring to it as a gif. I'd like to do that, it could be fun. Another time!

I opened my notebook to write fanfic, and ended up doodling the characters instead...

Hana has been adopted by Auntie which means she's now a Yuichi and is Usagi's little sister, and you can't change my mind.

Also I gave her a different outfit so she's not still in ninja gear. She's probably wearing Usagi's old clothes. She has a bandana around her forehead so that her face still looks right, because I'm used to her with the ninja mask.

Im looking back over my head canons and making some tweaks and stuff, and one of my head canons was about Usagi and Leo and I’ve been trying to figure out if each prompt is more ROTTMNT based or 2012. And I really want Leo to be with Usagi from 2012 BUT i judt find it really hard to get around the age gap. NOW HEAR ME OUT OK?! I know it’s not that big of an age gap. Leo is at least 18+ canonically during that episode but Usagi is portrayed (to much) a little bit older. And I get very uncomfortable with ages gaps more than two years. And to me it’s about 5. This is just my personal opinion. I have not facts or anyhting behind this because I could not for the life of me find Usagi’s canonical age for 2012. I know there is so much discourse over this exact argument but I just wanted to clarify my point of view before I started putting out real work and having people come at me or whatever the fuck might’ve happened. It’s just difficult for me to see it and be comfortable with it so I’m going to leave that to ROTTMNT with my head canon/oc style Usagi that would exist in that world in my mind.

Dunno why, just felt the need to clarify this. Coz I know its often causes a lot of discorse and all that.

I love the contrast between usagi and chibiusa where usagi is very ‘the power of love’ and ‘pls talk to me!!’ meanwhile chibiusa just ‘we’re here to fight! I have a gun and I’m not afraid to use it!!’

Introducing; Yuichi Usagi-Cuddles!

There’s a slight typo in his basic character bio, (first, grey image) other than “yuich,” his family in America lives in the part of the hidden city under Jersey. He lives in Jersey. He’s a Jersian. So in terms of leosagi, it’s gonna be an enemies-to-lovers comedy-of-errors muahahahaha!!

Basically; He’s a silly guy! I feel like his kinda buffoonish, embarrassing personality in canon is simultaneously PERFECT for Rise’s writing style & grievously underrated in fanon depictions. So he’s this clownish type of character, haha.

Okay, time to go hyperfixation mode.

Adhd & his stubborn attitude;

He has ADHD! Executive function issues makes it hard for him to start tasks & manage himself, so he relies on his teams (the Mad Dogs when he’s training & the Rise equivalent to his canon friend group on his own time) to not only instruct him, but also hold him accountable & keep him on task. He’s body-doubling without even realizing it.

Although, he resents the things he does to accommodate his disability. He doesn’t notice that doing the things he does genuinely helps or why so he thinks he’s using them as a crutch because of incompetence. Every time he gets stubborn and ignores the things he needs to do, he crashes and burns. When he was new in town with no teacher & no friends who liked martial arts, he became a huge sad sack until the kraang invasion.

His character arc is about being able to rely on other people & accommodations. That relying on a bit more help than other people doesn’t make you incompetent, choosing to seek out the support you need so you can do your best is the true mature thing to do. I was inspired by canon Yuichi’s struggles with paying attention and Rise’s themes of cooperation. (& also my own experience with adhd and learning with executive function issues & junk)

Relationships w/ the turtles;

The Mad Dogs agree to let him like, intern with them? So he can see what it’s like to be a vigilante, they offer him advice and they occasionally go on low to mid-tier missions with his help. They take him on cause they think more heroes and allies out there, the less work they have to do haha. Also, one of the writers mentioned a season 3 would have them adjusting to being ~official heroes,~ I think this would be them trying to be “real.”

He’s closest friends with Mikey out of the whole group! (Adhd solidarity) Then it goes Donnie -> Raph -> and finally Leo (for now muahaha)

I tried to give Leosagi an interesting dynamic with constructing his character like this; They have similar insecurities from drawing self-worth from technical capabilities that they can develop past together, but Leo is clever and calculating about it vs Yuichi being rash and impulsive. So like smart x stupid but they’re the same actually.

His Family in Jersey;

He speaks english fluently because he’s visited his American family frequently his whole life, they’re very close. He has an accent though since he mainly speaks Japanese.

I haven’t fleshed out this concept enough, but I think members of his jersey/Cuddles half of the family would be spoofs of characters from the original yojimbo comics, implied to be reincarnations? Except Miyamoto ofc. (i’ll explain later..)

Reusing the ninja orphans plotline from the original show, his family utilizes their cute appearances to run an orphanage too. They wonder why this Chizu lady is constantly showing up with unhoused children, but they’re just grateful they’re safe now.

Everyone in his family HATES Mrs. Cuddles, they all think she’s in prison and are happy about it. She might’ve given him that scratch on his face.

Ok so I just enter to Tumblr and the first thing I see are hate comments for a post?...

I honestly loved what you did, I'm relatively new to the fandom and the first thing I saw about Leo was Leosagi fanarts which confused me because they're not even in the same series?... But people defended it so much that I thought that was a normal ship that the entire fandom liked and that's why I would have to get used to it, then I find out your blog and I'm so in love with the way you portray Leo with y/n it means a lot to me! So, in short: thanks for speaking up about it and I just really love your drawings and animations ✨

But, honestly, this is scary to see how much some people downplay Leo and his personality to just him being gay (when he's not and his personality and character arc are MUCH more than that) and deceive others into thinking leosagi is canon... I saw other case like this, and I myself at some point though it was something until I checked everything and realised that, no, it's all just headcanon that some really forcing into others and even creators themselves.

I hope you don't mind if I leave some of my thoughts on this ship under your ask, but I've watched the first episode of Usagi Chronicles because I wanted to a) see what all the fuss is about, b) try not to make people think I'm critical when I haven't even watched the show. I'm going to leave my thoughts below, so, if people want, they can read them. If not, then, please, don't. Those are my personal experience. If you like leosagi and want to continue ship it, do it. It's not my business. Under the line I'll be talking mostly about those people who, again, forcing this ship into fans and creators.

So, I watched that first episode while my friend watched the whole series, and, honestly, my thoughts were "huh..?". Like, Usagi to me felt like diet Leo. They're basically have the same personality, but Usagi is less charismatic and even annoying... Leo to some is also annoying, but he still has his charms and strategic mind. And from what I've heard, even by the end of the season 2 Usagi stays pretty much the same. Honestly, I don't see how this ship can work without heavy fanoning both characters. I wouldn't be surprised if many aggressive shippers haven't even watched Usagi Chronicles and ship leosagi because: a) they need to ship Leo with a male and Yuichi is an easy choice, b) they just look cute together. Because if past movie Leo would meet past season 2 Usagi they wouldn't stand each other. And in a relationship they would get bored of each other pretty quickly, because there would be no dynamic or chemistry. Good friends? Maybe. Partners? No.

I'm not going to talk about Miyamoto because as far as I know he has a canonical love interest and a child.

And all this led me to a question: is THIS what people want...? For creators to butcher a character so they could have their fanservice?

A meta on Yuichi Usagi

I know I make fun of Yuichi Usagi for wanting to be the main character so bad. But the truth is, he already has the elements of "The Hero" character: hope-believer, do-gooder, and outcast be-friender.

He kept his eyes on hope when the invasion was coming.

He was proactively optimistic with his friends, not foolishly optimistic, when the invasion came.

He made friends and allies in people who were ready to beat him up.

And that's what infuriates me about "The Hero" characters. They're not just characters who are too stubborn to go wrong. They're characters who are too GOSH DARN stubborn to go wrong. Because everywhere they go, they have this element of silliness that brings light to the other characters.

In what should be a tragic betrayal of student to master, Chizu changed her mind when she met Usagi, Kitsune and Gen.

A lonely orphan who became a thief found a support system that started with Usagi's disaster.

A bounty hunter haunted of his home without a family was filled again when Usagi brought them together.

As much as I enjoyed fanon Yuichi Edgey-sagi, I no longer found that version believable the moment I watched his show. Because Yuichi Usagi as one of those "The Hero" characters, has a way of bending the narrative towards hope as an answer.

About the Hamato family:

Splinter owns a plot of land in the village where he manages everything and his sons work for him. Raph takes care of the animals but also does the rough work when necessary as he is the strongest, Donnie is a mechanic, he is mostly fixing things in his own warehouse barn, he works with machines but he fixes all kinds of things. Mikey takes care of the plantation like the good cook he is but sometimes he needs Raph's help, so when that happens Leo is responsible for taking care of the animals and the garden at the same time, and he is the family doctor, Donnie is the second doctor in Leo's absence. ah! in this AU Leo is the younger twin :)

Human ROTTMNT AU:

Usagi is a medieval knight who lives his life doing his duties until one day he sees Leo, a mere peasant who is irresistibly attractive, working in a huge field of flowers (in this Au Leo is a florist and gardener) and since then there has been an attraction and interest on the part of the knight. But then after days of talking Usagi discovers that the sweet and innocent Leo was some kind of Robin Hood to the village alongside his brothers and he doesn't know how to react to that. But by time he accepts it and keeps the secret.

The two get closer every day, with more familiarity however... a Ball is scheduled by the King (who I have no idea who it would be) in order to choose a partner (male or female), this King does not cares about marrying a servant or peasant, so he calls everyone in the kingdom and to Usagi's unhappiness he ends up becoming interested in Leo.

They need to figure out how to make the King forget about Leonardo and the only solution they can think of is to run away. Usagi spends a period of 2 months traveling with Leo and things happen :) when they come back the king finds out bla bla bla Usagi confesses his love in front of everyone and the king just accepts..? Like in the meantime he falls in love with someone else so it's okay (he just gets mad because Leonardo didn't think to tell him he didn't want to marry him in the first place smh)

I couldn't think of a better ending considering this is a BIG summary that has lots and lots of context and construction considering it could be a 15-chapter story but anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if you want a better ending think whatever you want ❤️

Favorite TMNT ship? Uhhhh...

I don't have any other ships I like as much as Timatello. I know some of my friends' OCs that are shipped with the turtles (in a not weird way dw) but they don't technically count.

I like Leosagi, but mostly 2003 Leosagi and certainly not 2012.

Aprinardo in TOTTMNT is alright, I like them being a couple because they actually aren't weird towards eachother and it's wholesome, but I only see them as platonic.

Leochi (Leo and Yuichi Usagi) is pretty good, I love the concept of Yuichi working at the Run Of The Mill Pizza, or a crossover between dimensions.

Shellshocked is sweet, but it could never happen, unfortunately.

Donnie and Atomic Lass is just funny as hell.

Apritello is something I don't really enjoy, especially in 2012, because of the way they wrote it. If written correctly, I can see this ship happening from a platonic standpoint.

Mikey and Renet - Again, platonic.

Raph and Mona Lisa - 2012 did it and it was rather undercooked and he never actually called her by her actual name, which was odd. Overall it's very sweet but I wish they had more time to develop it. Again, I'd love to make them a thing in my Rise fanon, but my current storyline is incomplete.

Raph and Alopex - Yeesh, the age gap that some of the artists said they had was.. Odd, to say the least. But their relationship definitely did grow to be pretty good until they parted ways. I'd be down to make Alopex best friends with Raph, but the romantic aspects don't vibe with me.

Donnie and Bigfoot - Get the fuck out.

Any of the turtles in general x April - Depends on the way the canon version wrote it. (Aprinardo is currently the only good one.)

Donnie and Irma - We don't get to see much of them throughout the franchise, but I like their dynamic in 1987 (platonically) and I enjoyed their dynamic in 2012 as well.

Leo and Koya - I like it. Not much else to say.

I saw someone ship Sunita and Dale together once and cringed so 🤷

Sunita x April - I like it, it's cute, but I feel like it's pretty platonic. I'll think about it more as time goes on, but yeah.

Sunita x Raph - I once saw a friend of mine ship these two together and honestly, I liked it! Very good art, very good opinions on it.

Those are all the ships I can remember off the top of my head. But none of these compare to Timatello.
