”For the woman that asked what variation they were learning, Jonathan Still tells me it is the (“Variation de Mlle. Fanny Cerrito”) from Grand Pas De Quatre (Anton Dolin/Cesare Pugni).” - Ian Comer, Admin. of the IBMP Blog
Thank you, Ian Comer, for having Jonathan Still (whose blog on insights about ballet accompaniment is FIRE) identify the ballet variation for this curious dance history buff! Here’s the whole ballet work in full, here danced by Elisa Carrillo Cabrera, Yolanda Correa, Kristina Kretova, and Evelina Godunova. (The variation I queried about to the IBMP guys starts at 10:45.)

Paul Eduard Maximilian Burde (b.1819 - d.1874) 'The Dancer Fanny Cerrito (b.1817 - d.1909 also called Fanny Cerrito St. Leon) as 'La Esmeralda', oil on canvas, no date (est. 1844), for sale est. 6,500 - 8,000 EUR in Bassenge Gallery's Old Master & 19th Century Paintings sale, June 2020; Berlin, Germany.
Fanny is depicted in her role of 'La Esmeralda' in the ballet of the same name by Jules Perrot and Cesare Pugni. In the background is the Notre Dame, and the letters below her spell out ‘Phoebus’. Fanny Cerrito was the Prima Ballerina of La Scala Theatre, Milan, at the time; she may have only appeared as principal dancer in Antonio Monticini's 1839 version of La Esmeralda. (x)
In a lithograph published by L. Sachse & Co., found in the New York Public Library digital collection, the artist is written on the work as ‘Gez. von Burde’ and the NYPL attributes this to Friedrich Leopold Burde (b.1792 - d.1849), Berlin professor and painter, whilst the Bassenge Gallery auction listing gives Paul Burde as its artist, who was Paul’s uncle.
As Friedrich Burde was primarily a painter of animals, it is much more likely by Paul Burde’s hand.

A. E. Chalon, lithograph of Carlotta Grisi (left), Marie Taglioni (center), Lucille Grahn (right back), and Fanny Cerrito (right front) in the Perrot/Pugni Pas de Quatre, London, 1845
“The Romantic ballet... is typically considered to have begun with the 1827 début in Paris of the ballerina Marie Taglioni in the ballet La Sylphide, and to have reached its zenith with the premiere of the divertissement Pas de Quatre staged by the Ballet Master Jules Perrot in London in 1845. The Romantic ballet had no immediate end, but rather a slow decline. Arthur Saint-Léon's 1870 ballet Coppélia is considered to be the last work of the Romantic Ballet.During this era, the development of pointework, although still at a fairly basic stage, profoundly affected people's perception of the ballerina.” Wikipedia

Pas de quatre 1845, choreography by Jules Perrot, music by Cesare Pugni. It was performed by Lucile Grahn, Carlotta Grisi, Fanny Cerrito, and Marie Taglioni, four celebrated ballerinas of the time. Fanny Elssler was invited to take part in its creation but declined to do so. Young Lucile Grahn accepted without hesitation.

Marie Taglioni, Comtesse de Voisins (23 April 1804 – 22 April 1884) was a Swedish ballet dancer of the Romantic ballet era, a central figure in the history of European dance. She was one of the most celebrated ballerinas of the romantic ballet, which was cultivated primarily at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, and at the Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique of the Paris Opera Ballet. She is credited with (though not confirmed) being the first ballerina to truly dance en pointe. Taglioni was born in Stockholm, Sweden, to Italian choreographer Filippo Taglioni and Swedish ballet dancer Sophie Karsten, maternal granddaughter of the Swedish opera singer Christoffer Christian Karsten and of the Polish opera singer and actress Sophie Stebnowska. Her brother, Paul (1808–1884), was also a dancer and an influential choreographer; they performed together early in their careers. Before joining the Paris Opéra, Taglioni danced in both Munich and Stuttgart, and at age 23 debuted in another ballet choreographed by her father called "La Sicilien" that jump-started her ballet career. Taglioni rose to fame as a danseuse at the Paris Opéra when her father created the ballet La Sylphide (1832) for her. Designed as a showcase for Taglioni's talent, it was the first ballet where dancing en pointe had an aesthetic rationale and was not merely an acrobatic stunt, often involving ungraceful arm movements and exertions, as had been the approach of dancers in the late 1820s. In 1837 Taglioni left the Ballet of Her Majesty's Theatre to take up a three-year contract in Saint Petersburg with the Imperial Ballet (known today as the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet). In July 1845, she danced with Lucile Grahn, Carlotta Grisi, and Fanny Cerrito in Jules Perrot's Pas de Quatre, a ballet representing Taglioni's ethereal qualities that was based on Alfred Edward Chalon’s lithographic prints. Pas de Quatre was originally choreographed to be presented to Queen Victoria, who attended the third performance.

[VIDEO] Pas de Quatre with Carla Fracci, Margrethe Schanne, Josette Amiel, and Kirsten Bundgaard 1968
The ballet divertissement Pas de Quatre was choreographed by Jules Perrot in 1845 to music composed by Cesare Pugni, commissioned by Her Majesty’s Theatre in London. It was first seen on 12 July 1845 and was an immediate hit, mainly because it brought together some of the most famous ballerinas of the time: Carlotta Grisi, Fanny Cerrito, and Marie Taglioni. The great Romantic ballerina, Fanny…

Me: I need to change my url it's really trash Also me: *decides that 12:30 am is totally the appropriate time to research Marie Taglioni and other famous ballerinas of the romantic era*
#I really need to go to sleep#but dance history is so fascinating#also there's been a lot of unnecessary drama about who's performing which variation from pas de qautre at our next show and it's frustrating#I really want to do Taglioni's variation even though it's intense#but my friend is trying to switch variations because she hates Fanny Cerrito's#I realize literally none of you care about this but it's been bothering me#anyway if y'all wanna talk about the history of ballet or dance or cultural diplomacy hit me up
