Fanovember 2024 prompt list
(Written list below the line)
Tumblr media
We decided to go through literary genres this time, although you can fit the prompt however you please (by using the literal word in your piece, a small reference, or writing in the style of that prompt!)
→We'll be posting some ideas every day to spark creativity if any prompt in particular doesn't work well for you. Although you don't have to complete the challenge 100% (I won't, more on that later)
→There's no limit on extension at all, whatever you need will be fine. (At least 200 words was the initial idea, but I, for instance, sometimes need less)
→You can write in any language you want, we'll repost anyway. It's also valid if you mix languages! (I'll use Spanish since the media I've chosen is originally in that language)
→Arists are welcome too, of course!
→Some people suggested creating an Ao3 Collection for this challenge and we have listened carefully (also had some help from @prettysophist, tysm again!) So here it is! Fanovember 2024 Ao3 Collection is now available for all of you. Remember to tag and categorize your works correctly so people can find what they'r looking for/avoid anything they don't want to read. Be nice!
→Remember to mention this blog @fanovember and use any (or all) of these tags both here and on Ao3:
#fanovember
#fanovember 2024
#fanovember 24
→Needless to say, this event does NOT allow AI generated content of any kind. We want to see the most human of arts and writings
Personally, I don't think I'm completing the full list, as I'm absolutely surpassed by daily responsibilities. But since Softober went well, I'll choose 12 or 13 of the prompts that appeal to me the most and write those throughout the month. You can do whatever works best for you too, we don't want you to feel pressured by any means.
Choose your fandom (or fandoms) and start creating! Let's have some fun!!

This song got me thinking of a Magnus Archives AU (spoilers for the show's ending)
Something something after Ep 200 somehow we go back to an alternative time line where the staff of the Archive were not captured permanently by any entities (besides the obvious) and Jon and Tim are really getting along, Jon is more outgoing all in all and Martin is Bitter.
Everyone has foggy, dreamlike memories of the another time line, those who witnessed more, remember more.
Tldr: Martin was right, they couldn't be together in another universe but he is not happy about it.

Okay, so my brain has kinda been taken over by Overlord Husk AU’s, but I genuinely need a fic where Husk becomes an Overlord again
(like, Alastor owned his soul, and then somehow husk got control over it again, and now 💥boom💥 overlord husk is back in business) (also, if there’s HuskerDust in there too, that’d be amazing) (and it’s either I find this fic, I just write it myself, or I go insane ngl lol)

Not me, searching for gifs to find a face-claim with sufficient resemblance to both Adar, and my OC, Maethoriel, for the 'Adar was never taken by Morgoth' AU that still keeps tormenting my brain, insisting I write it pronto, and accidentally stumbling across a gif of Mae's face-claim that just screams inspo for a scene in Dúrnost for The Abhorred as a result.
...oops?
The feral screeching continues.

what is your writing comfort zone and what is an absolute "i will NEVER go in there" for you?
I love fluff and comfort with a bit of emotional angst, and I could never go terror or thriller

Tips for writing flawed but lovable characters.
Flawed characters are the ones we root for, cry over, and remember long after the story ends. But creating a character who’s both imperfect and likable can feel like a tightrope walk.
1. Flaws That Stem From Their Strengths
When a character’s greatest strength is also their Achilles' heel, it creates depth.
Strength: Fiercely loyal.
Flaw: Blind to betrayal or willing to go to dangerous extremes for loved ones.
“She’d burn the whole world down to save her sister—even if it killed her.”
2. Let Their Flaws Cause Problems
Flaws should have consequences—messy, believable ones.
Flaw: Impatience.
Result: They rush into action, ruining carefully laid plans.
“I thought I could handle it myself,” he muttered, staring at the smoking wreckage. “Guess not.”
3. Show Self-Awareness—or Lack Thereof
Characters who know they’re flawed (but struggle to change) are relatable. Characters who don’t realize their flaws can create dramatic tension.
A self-aware flaw: “I know I talk too much. It’s just… silence makes me feel like I’m disappearing.” A blind spot: “What do you mean I always have to be right? I’m just better at solving problems than most people!”
4. Give Them Redeeming Traits
A mix of good and bad keeps characters balanced.
Flaw: They’re manipulative.
Redeeming Trait: They use it to protect vulnerable people.
“Yes, I lied to get him to trust me. But he would’ve died otherwise.”
Readers are more forgiving of flaws when they see the bigger picture.
5. Let Them Grow—But Slowly
Instant redemption feels cheap. Characters should stumble, fail, and backslide before they change.
Early in the story: “I don’t need anyone. I’ve got this.”
Midpoint: “Okay, fine. Maybe I could use some help. But don’t get used to it.”
End: “Thank you. For everything.”
The gradual arc makes their growth feel earned.
6. Make Them Relatable, Not Perfect
Readers connect with characters who feel human—messy emotions, bad decisions, and all.
A bad decision: Skipping their best friend’s wedding because they’re jealous of their happiness.
A messy emotion: Feeling guilty afterward but doubling down to justify their actions.
A vulnerable moment: Finally apologizing, unsure if they’ll be forgiven.
7. Use Humor as a Balancing Act
Humor softens even the most prickly characters.
Flaw: Cynicism.
Humorous side: Making snarky, self-deprecating remarks that reveal their softer side.
“Love? No thanks. I’m allergic to heartbreak—and flowers.”
8. Avoid Overdoing the Flaws
Too many flaws can make a character feel unlikable or overburdened.
Instead of: A character who’s selfish, cruel, cowardly, and rude.
Try: A character who’s selfish but occasionally shows surprising generosity.
“Don’t tell anyone I helped you. I have a reputation to maintain.”
9. Let Them Be Vulnerable
Vulnerability adds layers and makes flaws understandable.
Flaw: They’re cold and distant.
Vulnerability: They’ve been hurt before and are terrified of getting close to anyone again.
“It’s easier this way. If I don’t care about you, then you can’t leave me.”
10. Make Their Flaws Integral to the Plot
When flaws directly impact the story, they feel purposeful rather than tacked on.
Flaw: Their arrogance alienates the people they need.
Plot Impact: When their plan fails, they’re left scrambling because no one will help them.
Flawed but lovable characters are the backbone of compelling stories. They remind us that imperfection is human—and that growth is possible.

NOV. 20, 2024
Dream I had last night-
It had a magical girl... well, magical woman because she was at least in her 20s.
It had an OLDER love interest. In the dream, it was an older man who was a teacher. Definitely had some age gap there. I can't remember if they worked together or she just came to the rescue. They were definitely dating/in a relationship by the time this last part of my dream happened.
She came to the school or was already there, I can't remember which it was, and had a fight with the "Big Bad". She had to literally run away from her love, which had him in a panic and wanting her to come back or to get to her, but she put up protective shields around his classroom and the others, the office(s), etc. Essentially she put up shields where there were any innocent bystanders at the school, and then she started fighting the villain.
I hate that I don't remember how the fight went, but I think it went that either the villain was "purified" or "defeated", but she (Lady Big Bad) left really banged up. Hero looks up to where she knows lover's class is and then she leaves, and she's also injured.
Meanwhile lover is trying to get to her, but by the time the shields finally come down, she's gone.
Does have a later reunion between the two. Did take a Mature rated tumble as they also discussed things like wanting to be together and wanting kids (biological, adopted, or both), etc.
That's pretty much the end of it.
Tossing this on here so I don't forget about it later on, so I'm rushing through typing this up. If anyone wants to use the idea, credit me please.
(Think I saw one too many fantasy/magical girl shows recently. 😂😅)
(Including trigger warnings for the age gap mention in the tags just in case, even if I didn't really expand on it.)
