21. most memorable comment/review?

I've been lucky to get some very lovely comments on my writing, but one that stands out is a comment I got on 'Gifted' (my favourite of my work so far). They yelled a little bit in caps about how much they enjoyed it, and that they had to reread a few lines because of how good they were. Then they ended with telling me to "never stop writing". I felt really warm inside after that. (I think they are on Tumblr, but I'm not sure if they would want to be called out so have left it anonymous, but if you see this and recognize it, thank you for my life :D)

23. fics you wanted to write but didn’t?

Broadly speaking, I had a few fic ideas knocking about that I ended up not attempting as I didn't (and still don't!) feel I had/have the skill to execute them well. Partly a confidence problem I suppose, but one I plan to work on - so maybe these ideas will see the light of day after all!

14. a fic you didn't expect to write - Addicted. I had never expected to write Max Phillips but I got him in @iamasaddie ‘s writing challenge and so I really had to challenge myself😅 the story didn’t come easily to me and the process of writing it was quite hard but I’m happy with the result😊

24. favorite fic you read this year - this year I’ve read so many wonderful fics that have stuck with me, touched me, amazed me and I hope I’ll make a rec list of those, but when I read this question, one fic immediately popped up in my mind. I’m going to reply with my heart pussy and say that it’s Puppy Lessons by @pedge-page 🥵 it’s so damn hot to me and I’ve read and thought about it so many times omg🫠🫠🫠

I actually don't listen to anything normally when I write. Occasionally, I'll notice that I left something on in the background it is usually Florence + the Machine and more often than not the album Dance Fever.

"FESTUS IS….BRO. THIS ISNT DISNEY THAT KISS WONT WAKE HIM UP!!!" from @persephoneprice's comment on Amor et Mors Omnia Vincunt still makes me laugh. ... Also very touched by this comment from @tumblingghosts on Allegory of the Cave (it's only the beginning of the comment): "i need you to know that i've been sat here for a solid five minutes just staring at the blinking cursor in this comment box because WOW the narrative you have made here for florus."

a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read

to be honest, a lot of the fics I like are probably a matter of personal taste, so idk, if I'd recommend them to everyone, but this is the most family friendly favorite fic for this year: felix ratvinstill, the patron saint of rodents by @tumblingghosts which of course will always be famous to me.

8. Shortest completed fic you wrote this year

I won't count the Tolna's smut challenge for the word count limits or one shot drabbles here, only my multi-chapter fics ... which means my shortest fic completed this year is 'They asked for no pickles', my He Who Was x Geraldus modern restaurant AU.

Service came in at a clippy 10,698 words. Proof that sometimes I can, in fact, stop blathering.

14. A fic you didn't expect to write

I have a few examples here because honestly, most of my works past 'The Harper & The Tower' have been unexpected... but I'm going to go with one I a) didn't expect to find myself writing and b) generally opened the floodgate to a bunch of other problems, which is 'Trusting, Trusted' - my original Klaus x Kar'niss one shot.

Klaus was happily canoodling with Lia over in H&TT, I had no intention of writing Kar'niss, - only a vague notion that it'd be neat if he ended up at the circus. I'd never written anything even remotely monster-smoochin' adjacent. One conversation with @littlemisscactus and a reveal Klaus was a draconic bloodline sorceror later and suddenly I was writing pedipalp action.

... and then said action got super real and full of emotions and now I'm 86k into a Klaus and Kar'niss extraplaner tour romance and I've adopted a whole circus and we're all rooting for Popper and Medrash right?

Wild.

24. Favourite fic you read this year

Confession zone - I'm an atrocious reader. I have so many things bookmarked or half started or sitting in my periphery I'm desperate to read. I'm hoping that come the holidays I might finally be able to actually get through some of them.

I'd like to shout out to 'Circus of the Last Love', by @adoenamedjane.

This fantastic story takes an unloveable sidequest - the search for Dribble's body parts - and makes absolute lemonade out of it, structured around a love triangle between Dove (an OC), Rugan and Zevlor.

Adoenamedjane has a remarkable talent for sharp, precise writing that strikes like a blade - no word wasted and chosen exactly so. I find it remarkable, and I envy it enormously - please do check out their wonderful work.

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year

Ohhh...this is difficult to pick. One of my very favorite scenes (I'm not sure if I have one favorite tbh) is the first part of Chapter 8 of Collateral, and one of my favorite lines is actually from the chapter right before it

She lifted the lid and saw a helmet, a blur of motion. The boot that cracked her cheekbone was the color of sand.

But I also really like this from Brief Shadow:

“You sure you’re adopted?” he asks when she finishes telling him about her father’s cunning strategizing and his undying love for his family, about her mother’s quick wit and stubborn kindness. “They sound just like you.”

i'm gonna cheat and pick two haha i would have to say Ghost of You and ready or not are my favs. they were just very fun to write and oddly enough both based off of songs. (ghost of you by 5sos and ready for it by taylor swift respectively)

okay this year i like reverted back to my elementary school girl self that thought the two screaming chipmunks should kiss and since it looked like they weren't going to, i did it myself and have now written 3 alvin and the chipmunks fanfics. and while naruhina will always be my home, it was really fun trying out new character dynamics.

28. longest fic you read this year

Plot twist! The longest fic I read this year isn't Jily!!

It's a L&C fic, Federal Disaster by my friend lovetvfan aka Canadian Sara xD which I also volunteered to proofread for submission to the fandom Archive. All 106k words of it!

Jily-wise (and without proofreading), the winner is Call It What You Want by @wearingaberetinparis, at almost 81k.

I would also like to give an honourable mention to Head Over Handlebars For You by @practicecourts, which is a whopping 137k but I've been following since the first chapters were published in 2022, so I didn't read it in its entirety this year!

#3 favourite line/scene you wrote this year

Hmm, it's probably from Mrs Bridgerton Again when Benedict and reader broke the news to their daughter that they were back together. I liked how that scene played out in my head, and I was glad I was able to get it onto the page in the way I envisioned it. My favourite line in it, which I think sums up the Mrs Brigerton series tbh, is the following:

“Do you love Mummy, Daddy?” Emilia cuts in, breaking the hypnotic trance, looking at him expectantly.

“I never stopped,” he confesses truthfully, the hand on your knee feeling weightier somehow, the lump in your chest appearing again, but this time it’s the furthest thing from anxiety. “We just lost our way for a little while, that’s all,” he says as much for you as your daughter. “Everything is working out as it always should have,” he ends, his tone wavering with emotion.

Wow, honestly, this is tough. I am so very lucky to get wonderful feedback and comments. @broooookiecrisp and @eleanor-bradstreet give epic feedback to their requested fics so definitely theirs. One time someone was so annoyed at me that they said fuck you and thank you for writing this, that made me laugh. The most memorable from this year might have been on (Be)Longing where someone reblogged it and said they loved it even though they had never even seen Bridgerton. That was special when someone who hasn't even seen the source material can enjoy the story.

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year:

i delayed responding to this ask because i had no idea what my answer was to this question. my favorite scene I wrote this year involved my FMC squirting on the MMC's face while he was eating her out and he got off on it. here's the link to the chapter, but here's a snippet: (NSFW)

15 Something you learned this year

Tagging your fics is almost as important now as writing a summary. I left fandoms over a decade ago when it was still, like, language, explicit sex, slash, voyeurism and so on. I don’t think I ever saw a story rated E (NC-17 back then) that centred around a male gay couple tagged with anal play or blowjobs or fingering. But yeah, that is something I had to learn. Abuse the tags 😊

23 Fics you wanted to write but didn’t

Not really. I have quite a few ideas that won’t get written because I don’t have the time. There is this one idea, though, that I probably won’t ever write because I lack the knowledge and the skill, which is about a Shepard who was born with CAIS. Does that count?

27 Favourite fanfic author of the year Gah, I can’t pick one specifically. I have some I come back to a lot. @cr-noble-writes, @swaps55, @mallaidhsomo, but there are also a lot of authors where I only read one or two one-shots like @commander-krios and @dandenbo which were fantastic. So yeah. I can’t pick one lol.

Oooh I have a few, but I think I'll go for the 'safe house' scene from 'Gifted', but these lines in particular:

She sighs, seeing him plainly. “I hope that you will at least knock when you come calling. As I’m sure you will, when your lack-witted Banite underlings tell you I am here.” He claps a hand to his chest. “Do you really think me so uncivilised?” “I think that you do what you want.” He studies her for a moment, then smirks, dark eyes glittering. “I will endeavour to respect your space.”

And:

These things he gives her—are they gifts, or the bars of a cage? With him, is there even a difference?

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write?

The honest answer here is: any of them!

But if I had to choose one in particular, I would go for 'Tailored', the fic I put in for day 1 of Gortash Week. The idea for it hit me as I was leaving work that afternoon (originally I didn't have anything brewing and I was sad about it), so I speed-walked home whilst hallucinating the scene, then typed it up and posted it. It did pretty well, and is the fic of mine with the most comments.

19. any new fics to start next year?

I have a few solid ideas for more Durgetash stuff. And very early thoughts for Dark Urge/Halsin and Gale/Tav things that I want to attempt.

I was hoping to finish one more Durgetash thing before we get into 2025, but being sick constantly and a crisis of confidence have stymied me a bit there, so it will end up being a 'next year' fic after all.

I've got over 35,000 words, spread across several documents, including published fics and WIPs, various drafts and completed scenes, but not including the drafts and scenes handwritten in a notebook. I do like to outline or full-out write my fics in a notebook.

19. any new fics to start next year

Aaaaa, so manyyy! Wow! Okay, so I want to write a series of one-shots depicting scenes from Bartlet history (college, Kennedy-style wedding, or that time Jed accidentally ran over their next-door neigbors). There's another short, winter/holiday fic that I just might end up finishing before the New Years and a 5+1 things fic I've talked about on discord. (I have no self-control). I've also been working on my "What Was Abbey Bartlet Doing" fic which is basically a collection of standalone post-eps, so I'm going to continue working on that one as well.

This summer, I participated in TWW Press' Wheel of Destiny Drabble Challenge and I wrote two ficlets. One is a little bit of self-indulgent fluff, the other's a post-ep which started the whole Abbeyverse fic madness. I'm finishing my fic for TBW holiday fic exchange and I'm having so much fun!

15. Something you learned this year

Scheduling creativity is a fools errand; whilst there's something to be said for learning the practice of sitting down and writing something, anything, even if it's just to develop the habit on a daily basis - at the end of the day, what inspires you will still just slap you round the face at 3am when you have to work in the morning, and when you have free time and capacity to write you can and will end up just sitting there staring at a blank page going BRRRRRRRRRRR

There's more than that, but the 80s Soup AU was one I'd really really love to write, but I know I most likely wont. I'm sorry boys - I'll write you an AU some time, when that WIP list is slightly less horrendous.

1. I think Brief Shadow, though I also really like Purpose of Heritage (obvs or else I would be losing my mind even more than I already do with that thing), Far Too Violently, Far Too Long, Reconstitution, and Confirmed by Sources Close to the Subject (I just really like Leia to be incredibly sad, apparently. Ha...)

2. Either Speak Louder or Terrified Without You.

Speak Louder I actually like overall, but there is one absolutely absurd scene where Leia's dressing down some anonymous Alliance member for ignoring Han and I think it's a little too over-the-top; I thought that when I posted it, but sometimes with my one-shots, what decides when I post them is less about them being perfect and more about me being like, "I cannot keep editing this. This'll have to do." It's been good for my crushing perfectionism, tbh.

And Terrified Without You was the product of me going, "I want to write the tropiest fic that ever troped" and...uh...I think it succeeded, but I just don't love it. I love certain pieces of it, and it gave me a place to stick the "You'll speak at my funeral, won't you?" conversation that got yanked out of Purpose of Heritage for a number of reasons, but it's just not my favorite fic overall. I mean, I've still gone back and read it because I never post anything I despise or that just isn't working for me, but the question was least favorite, so...
