general writing advice, actually: you don’t need an excuse beyond “BUT WOULDN’T THIS BE COOL” to write something into your fic. write things in solely because they make you cackle with the delight of a 12-year-old-boy playing with his dinosaur toys. it’s fun and there’s nothing stopping you or any of us at all any longer.

Reason to Continue

Kaidan stepped inside the captain's quarters and took a look around. He never had the privilege of being inside this room on the original Normandy. Even if he had, he suspected this one was double the size, if not more. His lip twitched up as he watched the fish swimming in the aquarium; the twitch turned into a full smile as he noted the ship models displayed above Shepard's desk.

“How did you have time to build all those?”

“They were already made,” Shepard admitted, making Kaidan laugh. He moved to stand beside Kaidan. “What do you think?”

“Well... It's a big place.”

“Oh?” Now Shepard's lip was the one twitching. “That's your official assessment, Major?”

“Yeah.” Kaidan grinned at the commander. He couldn't help the smile spreading over his face. He was pleased the other man remembered that interaction. Affection bloomed in his chest. He took a step closer, then caught himself and rocked back on his heels. Naturally, Shepard noticed.

“What's wrong?”

“Nothing. Just glad to be back on the Normandy.” That made Shepard smile. He reached out to touch Kaidan's arm. His thumb caressed just under Kaidan's uniform sleeve. The touch made Kaidan's skin tingle.

“How do your limbs feel?” Shepard asked him. Losing you was like losing a limb. So Shepard remembered that, too.

“They feel fine.” Kaidan wondered if his biotics were primed, or if there was some other energy crackling in the air. Something was making his skin buzz. Shepard's thumb continued to move along his arm. Kaidan found he enjoyed the touch.

He was being honest that he was glad to be back on the ship, but it was more than that. He was happy being back with Shepard. All the pain and grief he went through the past two years, all the conflicted emotions he suffered when Shepard showed up on Horizon, none of it took away from the bond they created back then.

“Kaidan,” Shepard began. “I'm going to ruin the illusion. Back at the hospital, I was flirting with you.” Heat surged through Kaidan's body, different from the heat of his biotics. “I can't find any reason not to be up front about it,” Shepard went on. “Not after all we've been through.”

There were actually a lot of reasons. Kaidan could think of several off the top of his head, and more than that if given enough times. He used those reasons plenty of time over the years. Not always directed at Shepard, but with the same result. So while there were plenty of reasons not to go this route, there was one reason to continue that made everything else meaningless.

“You're right. You and me... us. It's been long enough.”

Kaidan leaned in close and finally, finally kissed John Shepard.
