Excerpt:

Harry’s voice eventually came back to him, a shallow, croaking thing. “Hadn’t we better go out there, then?” he asked, gesturing somewhat half-heartedly toward the door.

Malfoy gave another jerking shake of his head. “You can’t say things like that.”

Realizing his gaze had wandered to Malfoy’s lips, Harry jerked his head back up to Malfoy’s eyes. They were hot and silver, liquid metal pouring into him.

“I’ve been good.” Malfoy licked his lips. “I’ve tried to be good. I’ve done everything I possibly . . .”

“You are good,” Harry said, and colour popped into Malfoy’s cheeks, sudden and hot.

“Things like that,” Malfoy went on. “You can’t say things like that. It’s not fair of you, to me; you’re not being fair to me, knowing that I—I never brought it up. I stayed away. I tried to stay away; I . . .” Malfoy turned away, teeth baring in frustration.

Harry felt badly. He shouldn’t say what he was about to say. He said it anyway. “Why did you break up with Rune?”

“Things like that,” Malfoy said, gaze swinging back to pin him, to bore straight through him like the round heads of hammers. “It’s not fair.”

“You’re right,” Harry said. “I’ve been unfair. I—I didn’t know what I felt.”

Malfoy’s gaze swept down, away from him.

Harry realized their positions were reversed, now. Malfoy had been standing here, by the window, three years ago at the end of term, just after graduation. Harry had been standing where Malfoy was now. “I know what I feel now,” Harry said again. “I don’t know if you still feel the same, or—”

“The same?” Malfoy’s voice was low, a little threatening. “You said we could never feel the same. Never . You said—”

“I know what I said,” Harry said. “I was wrong.”

Malfoy took a noisy breath, then another one, breathing hard. “But you . . . You can’t. You said you wouldn’t. You told me—”

“I was wrong,” Harry said again, stepping toward him.

Malfoy jerked back, almost violently. He seemed on the verge of hyperventilation. “But I had to—I had to rebuild every brick of myself, every cell, when you said you could never . . . I—I lost myself, all the things that drove me forward. I had to start over.”

“I think that’s why I—” Harry had to resist going to him, touching him. Malfoy looked like he was in actual pain, and Harry shifted his weight, shuffling. “I think that’s why I fell in love with you,” Harry said. “I didn’t mean to do it. I didn’t notice it was happening. You were just so—so brave, and so stubborn, and . . .”

“Brave,” Malfoy spat. “Stubborn. Have a Weasley, why don’t you?”

Harry shook his head. “I don’t want one.”

“Right,” Malfoy said, still sarcastic. “Instead you want someone who hurt you, who was a Death Eater, who hurt your friends—”

“You changed.”

“Too late! I’d already changed, when I joined the Academy! I’d already—I wanted to become an Auror so you would—I—I renounced my past; I defended Reveal; I thought it would be enough for you to—to—to want me, but you didn’t, Potter; you didn’t care about me at all!”

“I know,” Harry said. “I didn’t want you then. I didn’t want someone who would do all that for me. It’s when you started doing it for yourself, I—I don’t know, Malfoy. Draco. You made me believe we can change. I can change. And I did. You gave me hope, Draco. Hope I didn’t even know I needed.”

“Well, that’s bloody fine!” Tears sprang into Malfoy’s eyes, and Harry resisted going to him once again, still uncertain, still unsure. “That’s bloody fine for you!”

Harry’s hands twitched. “I’m not telling you this—I’m not expecting anything in return,” he ended up saying. “I’m not—I’m just—you said I wasn’t being fair.” Harry locked his hands together in front of him. “I thought you deserved to know.”

“Oh, thanks for that! Sure!” One of the tears actually made it out, dropping from a lash.

Malfoy wasn’t full on crying, but Harry thought if maybe Malfoy did return some of his feelings—or maybe was just remembering them, how intense they had been—maybe this would hurt a lot, or feel unkind. Harry regretted that, but he didn’t regret telling Malfoy. It took a certain kind of courage, he realized, to tell someone you loved them without expecting that they would love you back, but there was a freedom in it too. You could love enough that you could love any choice that other person made, and feel some solace in it as long as they were happy.

“Thanks,” Malfoy said again. “‘Not expecting anything in return.’ That’s a load of bollocks. I said forever, didn’t I? Did you think I was exaggerating?”

Harry’s heart leapt into his throat, and all thoughts of solace or freedom or courage left him. “Do you mean you . . .” He trailed off, then cleared his throat. His hands twitched again. “You did say you remade every cell.”

“Potter, you fool,” Malfoy muttered. “My body doesn’t know how to make a cell that doesn’t love you.”

“Oh,” Harry breathed.

“You want to know why I broke up with Rune? You want to know why I can’t have other romantic relationships? You want to know why my Pensieve is full of you and why I can’t sleep at night and why half of the time won’t come near you and why just a look from you, just a word, is something I live on for hours, days, weeks, why summer is torture and I don’t mind coming back to this Merlin-forsaken place year after year after year—”

“I thought it’s because you wanted to be an Auror.”

Malfoy threw up his hands. “I’ve been expelled! I’ll never be an Auror! Here I am!”

Harry swallowed, his eyes drifting back down to Malfoy’s lips. “Here you are,” he said, his voice hoarse.

“Prove it.” Harry’s eyes jerked up again, and Malfoy rolled his own. “If this was actually happening, he went on, “and wasn’t some wild gay fantasy borne out of exhaustion, you’d have kissed me already, and we would probably be—I don’t know—fucking over your desk—”

“I couldn’t before,” Harry said. “Not while you were still a student.”

“See, that’s another thing you’d say in one of my elaborate fantasies: you fantasizing about fucking me while I was still a student—”

“You were fucking me,” Harry said. “In the fantasies.”

“Potter,” Malfoy said, impatient now. “How am I meant to believe—”

He cut himself off when Harry came toward him, and the problem was that in all of Harry’s fantasies, Malfoy was the one beating him in the sparring match. Malfoy was taking care of him, in love with him, and it had been that way for so long—Malfoy bringing him coffee, Malfoy guarding his door, Malfoy pining while Harry just tried to live his life. Harry had been struggling for so long, just trying to make it through the days, that when he imagined himself with Malfoy, he imagined falling and Malfoy being there to catch him—but it worked both ways.

Harry could catch Malfoy too.

I would be working with you to create an in-universe story which can either be based on your own scary and/or supernatural experience, something you’ve made up, or real life urban legends/cryptids/myths etc. This fanwork’s word count will range from 500 to 2000 words, depending upon the subject matter and flow of the conversation between the host and caller.

State of the Muffin Report 2023-24

Happy belated birthday to my fanfics! Little Zuko turned six back in March. <3 

Behold, my annual roundup stats, because you can get fanfic from the math teacher but you can’t get the math out of the fanfic:

After not touching the birthday fic itself since 2019, Little Zuko v the World is finally finished! Woooo.

Otherwise, a slow-but-steady sort of year on the fanfic front.

Finished the second book in my original fic series, Fox’s Tongue; The Skin Stealer’s Son officially launched yesterday! (Affiliate link, so that if you happen to buy it, Amazon pays me extra money for the privilege.)

I also created a secondary tiny human, and she is a DELIGHT. She was last seen a half hour ago crawling after her brother like a particularly aggressive tripod, Hop on Pop in one hand, and slap-screaming at it until he read it to her. My children. <3

Year Six (2024-25) Goals

Fanfic: 

Gonna finish the new case of Dark Night in Ba Sing Se. Gonna finish it so good. (This is a donation fic for the winner of my Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction and is therefore due by the end of the year, so woo artificial timelines! Ah external motivations, how I missed you from my school days.)

I’m incredibly excited for Blindsiding Badgermoles, and have that same lovely external motivation in the form of my sensitivity reader, so planning to focus on that this year.

Finish the current book of Towards the Sun. We’re currently on the final field trip, so that should be very doable. —I say, using the exact same wording for the third year in a row. Honestly this one’s less a goal than a joke to see how many years it’s actually going to take me. And hey, I’ve been making progress! We now have the delight that is Lady Jun! Third year’s the charm?

Serious Face Writing & RL: 

Get a solid start on Fox’s Tongue Book Three, Face of the Wolf King.

Get out large print editions of the first two books.

Continue raising children.

Six(ish) Sentence Sunday

Remember a couple days ago when I said thanks to the people who tagged me in the WIP ask game but my list had just hit 62 and I couldn't be bothered writing them all out? Well, welcome to #62. I watched a film, realised how many fics I've read based on it across a ton of fandoms in the last couple of decades, entered some sort of weird fugue state, and then there was a Google Doc open. As usual.

2019 Outside Kensington Palace, with the car waiting to take him back to the royals’ private airstrip, Alex seriously considers taking Henry’s phone out of his hand and plugging in his phone number. It’s the same tug in his gut that led him across a Buckingham Palace ballroom to poke and prod at Henry’s perfect princely veneer; the one that dragged him across the room to introduce himself at Rio; the one that used to pull him out of his bedroom and into June’s to open a magazine.  But that’s not what’s happening here. They’re not friends, even if Alex did see a glimmer of something resembling a personality while lying elbow to elbow with Henry on the dusty floor of a cupboard. It’s a PR stunt, nothing more, and they both have people who are literally employed to make sure they both come out of this looking good. No point in complicating it. In the end, Alex only reaches out when it’s time to shake Henry’s hand in farewell, and then he climbs into the back of the car and ignores the nagging sensation of something left unfinished. 2029 Alex rolls out the crick in his neck as he steps off the plane in Austin, his shoulders relaxing with every step into the familiar terminal. A couple of months into his second congressional term, he’s only just starting to feel like he really has a handle on the House schedule and the punishing weekly commute back and forth between Texas and DC—but just because he doesn’t have a spouse and kids to come home to like many of his colleagues on the Hill, it doesn’t mean he’s not still spending as much time in his district as he possibly can. Even if it does mean he has an even heavier reliance on caffeine than he did during college and more frequent flyer miles than he’ll ever know what to do with.

i love a little ask meme. this is exactly what it says on the tin. inspired by oomf.

How many works on AO3?

THIRTY SIX.... wow. it adds up. in my head it's like. ten. there are also a couple fics floating out there on a different secret pseud.

2. Total word count on AO3?

167,219. again, wow... it adds up.... this number is kind of low considering that i have THIRTY SIX fics (<5k each), but i could have written a novel or two in the past five years. but i didn't want to. so i didn't.

3. Top five fics by kudos?

shen yuan and original luo binghe’s epic adventure in the modern world - 3541 kudos

sweet as honey - 3398 kudos

put me in, coach - 2621 kudos

white amaranth, purple eggplant - 2139 kudos

well i suppose that tracks. it's kind of funny to me that all my top fics by kudos were in the year i started writing. did i peak with beginner's luck. but realistically these all benefited from being written relatively early on in the fandom. actually i had been convinced that scum villain fandom had PEAKED in 2019 and no one was going to read my shit. oh how the tables turn. now I'M the hag.

4. What fandoms do you primarily write for?

scum villain! and a couple other random fics for mxtx. but THIRTY ONE out of thirty six. are scum villain. again also there's my disowned lovechild fics that aren't mxtx out there somewhere.

anyway it's funny originally i thought i would just write a couple of sv fics and then move on to like. naruto. or fe3h. or whatever else i was thinking about in 2020. but now the characters are like old friends to me and it's very easy to imagine them in situations. i should really push myself out of my comfort zone. well i'm doing that for my fandom trumps hate gift. so!

5. Do you respond to comments?

i used to! they used to be my only outlet for talking about fandom. now i have fan friends and it's not all repressed. but the main thing is that a lot of my popular fics were written five years ago, so i don't have much to say in response other than. THANK YOU I LOVE YOU MWAH. i respond a bit more right after i post a fic when all my thoughts on it are fresh.

6. Angstiest ending?

the ones that are canon compliant. isn't that funny? every road leads to an end is i miss shen jiu whump lowkey, as told through ning yingying's eyes. the qing jing ghostbusters and the ten great mysteries of cang qiong mountain sect is i miss binghe whump. and the good, the bad, and the terror of the unjust is also "goodbye shen jiu" whump. well this one was supposed to be a comedy but i couldn't figure out how to make shen jiu stop abusing binghe so i just made it canon compliant.

7. Fic with the happiest ending?

my post canon fics! white amaranth, purple eggplant is about being depressed and getting a happy ending anyway. and forever hold your peace is about getting MARRIEDDDDDDD. so i'm very dedicated to sappy bingqius.

8. Do you get hate?

nope! everybody loves me. for now.

9. Do you write smut?

yes! i love physical comedy and what is sex, if not the ultimate act of physical comedy.

10. Do you write crossovers?

does the failed collaborative attempt at a saw fusion count? check it - the saw villain's self-saving trap.

11. Ever had a fic stolen?

not that i'm aware of!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

yes! Saettore did with Шэнь Юань, оригинальный Ло Бинхэ и их эпическое приключение в современном мире !

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

the aforementioned saw fusion fic. and also an exquisite corpse style fic with the now defunct cumplane server - con men. i kind of want to write co write something now. damn!

14. All time favorite ship?

i don't.... think i have one.... i love all my ugly children. bingqiu by numbers, but they still only make up 19% of my oeuvre.

15. WiPs you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

get home safe, my wangxian modern au set in the bay area. my wangxian juices aren't activated, and also i wrote that while missing home. then i moved home for a while and all the hazy romantic nostalgia evaporated. i feel like between what IS written and grandmaster ranked in demonic cultivation, i've gotten a lot of the "let's put the mdzs guys in san jose" juice out of me.

16. Writing strengths?

i think i'm funny. i like my dialogue. i like my fast pacing and comedic timing i have. i joke a lot that my fic at its strongest is really just stand up comedy.

17. Writing weaknesses?

everything else :) no seriously, i have a hard time slowing down a scene, building a setting, or even describing anything.

18. Thoughts on mixed language dialogue?

at first i used to translate everything - e.g. Shizun -> "Teacher" but for the past several years, i just do fandom house style where titles are untranslated. especially for modern aus, the bits that you would say untranslated even in an english sentence, those stay.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

scum villain! well i do also have a fe3h fic i was writing about the same time as my earliest scum villains. it was a post black eagles fic, where petra returns to brigid and becomes involved in masses of political intrigue and an arranged marriage. it was going to be a long fic, so naturally i ran out of steam and full pivoted to yaoi instead.

20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?

atttt the moment. maybe because of recency bias. or because i've been thinking about it for literally five years, the entire time i've been writing fic. possession. she's my baby. this fic anticipated me going to grad school, and is so much fun to think about and theorycraft with friends about.

Well our fame came to an all time high so I suppose it's time to explain what's going on and I truly wonder just how many people will be reading this. Either out of anger or curiosity or those who enjoy drama.

Long time ago I joined this fandom with a few of my friends and we enjoyed art over the years. blogs came and went and so did artists. My friends and I thought "oh hey what if we just dumped a bunch of pics online and see peoples reactions." So we took a vote and put together this blog.(the nsfw blog was from a couple of us so we thought we would throw that in here as well) It really wasn't supposed to be coherent or stable. i mean hell we came up with writing very broken english on purpose. But what truly shocked us was the amount of shall we say feedback? we got on here. We laughed tbh. A few of you respectfully asked we take their stuff down and we were about to until the pure passion arrived! So we took votes and decided to just wait and see what would happen. And boy did we! i mean one person (I won't mention because you'll get your fame from us even more!) literally took who knows how long of their time to call us out. we took that time from you. Well i stole life from you (i was handling this blog that day). So many limited breaths and your life was shortened but, that's not the point. I posted those ss to show, not out of pride, but to call those who supported this blog out. I mean, look at those likes! and we took roughly 15 ss. but decided to just shorten to the better well known blogs. hopefully you're still reading this because of one reason or another. We could say we were ginger or the pro trump jim blog or tunafish or any one who was just some rando weirdo hiding in the shadows as the cult of the one fic which we shall not name haunted this fandom back in 2019. seriously it wasn't that good. i wrote that just now to see how many people got mad from it. changeling jim sucks. do original content people. and fanart of fanart? lame. be original. but hey, look at that. lots of artists and others banded together in a lynch mob to tear down this blog and new life from hate sprouted in the trollhunters fandom once more. we took a vote and decided we had our fun and if this post gets enough attention we will in fact take this blog down because lets be honest literally every blog on tumblr could report us and the staff wont do shit. we wanted to make memories and now we have and we or at least i feel pride for it. oh another reason for the art picked by hand was because it was from very ancient dusty blogs or ones just not alive anymore so we knew the newer fans would be made aware of them. and that about covers all of it. i could add in more of what my group decided to write but ultimately its just repurposed explanations of what i wrote. i had to cut this down tbh. and as a random side thing you should for absolutely no reason check out these archive links!

Hi, I'm Sam, your friendly non-binary neighborhood History Teacher. I've been on this hellsite since 2013. I've been a 1d fan since Little Things came out in 2012. I am now 29, and most of what I do for this fandom is for fun. I am also an Army for BTS, have been since 2019.

I kind of have been trying my hand at all forms or fan content for fun. I am currently writing my longest fic ever, with 4 others on A03, I make gifs, and I've done edits.

If you plan on sending me hate just know you are going to get that look and response you always hated from teachers just through the computer. Because I will question your sanity and existence.

I remember that u mentioned that BTG was much harder to complete for FTH 2019, but was wondering if u will be doing FTH this year! And if so, would there be any fandoms you’d be especially interested in writing fic for?

I think writing By the Grace was such an unhealthy experience for me that even though I feel a bit tempted by FTH, I should stay away. I think that if I'm in a real writing mood I might trick myself into doing it, but the fact is that if I'm really feeling like writing I'll be focusing on original work.

As for my interests, I mainly read fanfics nowadays but gaming-wise it's a tie between Minecraft, InfinityNikki, The Sims 4 and That's Not My Neighbour. I occasionally brave the depths of Roblox for 3008, Farmstead, or Bloxburg, but I'm not on there too often anymore. I'm mainly watching The Apothecary Diaries as of now, but Bungo Stray Dogs is also still on my to-watch list. Right now I'm trying to get my hands on the rest of the PJO books, I only have 1 and 2, but I'm not the most 'actual book' ready person ever so it's on a low-burner.

I'm a fanfic author too, although I have no works currently posted, just endless WIPs, and my focus is right now on a Minecraft story with OCs. Basic 'deposited into game, have to survive' concept. To be honest, I'm only working on characterisation, because that's my favourite part of any media, making OCs. Or OC'ifying existing characters, like I've done with my various Harry Potter fics. Because, well, those characters lack a lot. Mostly I like to make them various forms of queer, though. If I'm gonna write for that fandom may as well do it in a way the author would dissaprove, amirite?
