Summary:
Harry is an Auror instructor. Malfoy wants to be an Auror.
Excerpt:
Harry’s voice eventually came back to him, a shallow, croaking thing. “Hadn’t we better go out there, then?” he asked, gesturing somewhat half-heartedly toward the door.
Malfoy gave another jerking shake of his head. “You can’t say things like that.”
Realizing his gaze had wandered to Malfoy’s lips, Harry jerked his head back up to Malfoy’s eyes. They were hot and silver, liquid metal pouring into him.
“I’ve been good.” Malfoy licked his lips. “I’ve tried to be good. I’ve done everything I possibly . . .”
“You are good,” Harry said, and colour popped into Malfoy’s cheeks, sudden and hot.
“Things like that,” Malfoy went on. “You can’t say things like that. It’s not fair of you, to me; you’re not being fair to me, knowing that I—I never brought it up. I stayed away. I tried to stay away; I . . .” Malfoy turned away, teeth baring in frustration.
Harry felt badly. He shouldn’t say what he was about to say. He said it anyway. “Why did you break up with Rune?”
“Things like that,” Malfoy said, gaze swinging back to pin him, to bore straight through him like the round heads of hammers. “It’s not fair.”
“You’re right,” Harry said. “I’ve been unfair. I—I didn’t know what I felt.”
Malfoy’s gaze swept down, away from him.
Harry realized their positions were reversed, now. Malfoy had been standing here, by the window, three years ago at the end of term, just after graduation. Harry had been standing where Malfoy was now. “I know what I feel now,” Harry said again. “I don’t know if you still feel the same, or—”
“The same?” Malfoy’s voice was low, a little threatening. “You said we could never feel the same. Never . You said—”
“I know what I said,” Harry said. “I was wrong.”
Malfoy took a noisy breath, then another one, breathing hard. “But you . . . You can’t. You said you wouldn’t. You told me—”
“I was wrong,” Harry said again, stepping toward him.
Malfoy jerked back, almost violently. He seemed on the verge of hyperventilation. “But I had to—I had to rebuild every brick of myself, every cell, when you said you could never . . . I—I lost myself, all the things that drove me forward. I had to start over.”
“I think that’s why I—” Harry had to resist going to him, touching him. Malfoy looked like he was in actual pain, and Harry shifted his weight, shuffling. “I think that’s why I fell in love with you,” Harry said. “I didn’t mean to do it. I didn’t notice it was happening. You were just so—so brave, and so stubborn, and . . .”
“Brave,” Malfoy spat. “Stubborn. Have a Weasley, why don’t you?”
Harry shook his head. “I don’t want one.”
“Right,” Malfoy said, still sarcastic. “Instead you want someone who hurt you, who was a Death Eater, who hurt your friends—”
“You changed.”
“Too late! I’d already changed, when I joined the Academy! I’d already—I wanted to become an Auror so you would—I—I renounced my past; I defended Reveal; I thought it would be enough for you to—to—to want me, but you didn’t, Potter; you didn’t care about me at all!”
“I know,” Harry said. “I didn’t want you then. I didn’t want someone who would do all that for me. It’s when you started doing it for yourself, I—I don’t know, Malfoy. Draco. You made me believe we can change. I can change. And I did. You gave me hope, Draco. Hope I didn’t even know I needed.”
“Well, that’s bloody fine!” Tears sprang into Malfoy’s eyes, and Harry resisted going to him once again, still uncertain, still unsure. “That’s bloody fine for you!”
Harry’s hands twitched. “I’m not telling you this—I’m not expecting anything in return,” he ended up saying. “I’m not—I’m just—you said I wasn’t being fair.” Harry locked his hands together in front of him. “I thought you deserved to know.”
“Oh, thanks for that! Sure!” One of the tears actually made it out, dropping from a lash.
Malfoy wasn’t full on crying, but Harry thought if maybe Malfoy did return some of his feelings—or maybe was just remembering them, how intense they had been—maybe this would hurt a lot, or feel unkind. Harry regretted that, but he didn’t regret telling Malfoy. It took a certain kind of courage, he realized, to tell someone you loved them without expecting that they would love you back, but there was a freedom in it too. You could love enough that you could love any choice that other person made, and feel some solace in it as long as they were happy.
“Thanks,” Malfoy said again. “‘Not expecting anything in return.’ That’s a load of bollocks. I said forever, didn’t I? Did you think I was exaggerating?”
Harry’s heart leapt into his throat, and all thoughts of solace or freedom or courage left him. “Do you mean you . . .” He trailed off, then cleared his throat. His hands twitched again. “You did say you remade every cell.”
“Potter, you fool,” Malfoy muttered. “My body doesn’t know how to make a cell that doesn’t love you.”
“Oh,” Harry breathed.
“You want to know why I broke up with Rune? You want to know why I can’t have other romantic relationships? You want to know why my Pensieve is full of you and why I can’t sleep at night and why half of the time won’t come near you and why just a look from you, just a word, is something I live on for hours, days, weeks, why summer is torture and I don’t mind coming back to this Merlin-forsaken place year after year after year—”
“I thought it’s because you wanted to be an Auror.”
Malfoy threw up his hands. “I’ve been expelled! I’ll never be an Auror! Here I am!”
Harry swallowed, his eyes drifting back down to Malfoy’s lips. “Here you are,” he said, his voice hoarse.
“Prove it.” Harry’s eyes jerked up again, and Malfoy rolled his own. “If this was actually happening, he went on, “and wasn’t some wild gay fantasy borne out of exhaustion, you’d have kissed me already, and we would probably be—I don’t know—fucking over your desk—”
“I couldn’t before,” Harry said. “Not while you were still a student.”
“See, that’s another thing you’d say in one of my elaborate fantasies: you fantasizing about fucking me while I was still a student—”
“You were fucking me,” Harry said. “In the fantasies.”
“Potter,” Malfoy said, impatient now. “How am I meant to believe—”
He cut himself off when Harry came toward him, and the problem was that in all of Harry’s fantasies, Malfoy was the one beating him in the sparring match. Malfoy was taking care of him, in love with him, and it had been that way for so long—Malfoy bringing him coffee, Malfoy guarding his door, Malfoy pining while Harry just tried to live his life. Harry had been struggling for so long, just trying to make it through the days, that when he imagined himself with Malfoy, he imagined falling and Malfoy being there to catch him—but it worked both ways.
Harry could catch Malfoy too.

State of the Muffin Report 2023-24
Happy belated birthday to my fanfics! Little Zuko turned six back in March. <3
Behold, my annual roundup stats, because you can get fanfic from the math teacher but you can’t get the math out of the fanfic:
Tumblr media
[id: Screenshot of an excel spreadsheet showing my 2023-24 word counts. Important info is that over six stories, I wrote 104k words, for a monthly average of 8.6k and a daily of 284 words. End id.]
Fanfic:
After not touching the birthday fic itself since 2019, Little Zuko v the World is finally finished! Woooo.
Otherwise, a slow-but-steady sort of year on the fanfic front.
Serious Face Writing & RL:
Li’s Friends has now raised $4,206.21 USD for wildlife charity, not counting gift matches. <3
Finished the second book in my original fic series, Fox’s Tongue; The Skin Stealer’s Son officially launched yesterday! (Affiliate link, so that if you happen to buy it, Amazon pays me extra money for the privilege.)
I also created a secondary tiny human, and she is a DELIGHT. She was last seen a half hour ago crawling after her brother like a particularly aggressive tripod, Hop on Pop in one hand, and slap-screaming at it until he read it to her. My children. <3
Year Six (2024-25) Goals
Fanfic:
Gonna finish the new case of Dark Night in Ba Sing Se. Gonna finish it so good. (This is a donation fic for the winner of my Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction and is therefore due by the end of the year, so woo artificial timelines! Ah external motivations, how I missed you from my school days.)
I’m incredibly excited for Blindsiding Badgermoles, and have that same lovely external motivation in the form of my sensitivity reader, so planning to focus on that this year.
Finish the current book of Towards the Sun. We’re currently on the final field trip, so that should be very doable. —I say, using the exact same wording for the third year in a row. Honestly this one’s less a goal than a joke to see how many years it’s actually going to take me. And hey, I’ve been making progress! We now have the delight that is Lady Jun! Third year’s the charm?
Serious Face Writing & RL:
Get a solid start on Fox’s Tongue Book Three, Face of the Wolf King.
Get out large print editions of the first two books.
Continue raising children.
Special thanks this year goes to First and Secondborn, who blessed me with the ability to still manage over 100k in a year, which is way more than I anticipated at this time last year.
Cheers,
MuffinLance

Six(ish) Sentence Sunday
Tumblr media
Don't forget, Fandom Trumps Hate bidding opens 8am EST on March 5th! Details of my offerings are here, and a roundup of all the RWRB offers can be found here.
Remember a couple days ago when I said thanks to the people who tagged me in the WIP ask game but my list had just hit 62 and I couldn't be bothered writing them all out? Well, welcome to #62. I watched a film, realised how many fics I've read based on it across a ton of fandoms in the last couple of decades, entered some sort of weird fugue state, and then there was a Google Doc open. As usual.
2019 Outside Kensington Palace, with the car waiting to take him back to the royals’ private airstrip, Alex seriously considers taking Henry’s phone out of his hand and plugging in his phone number. It’s the same tug in his gut that led him across a Buckingham Palace ballroom to poke and prod at Henry’s perfect princely veneer; the one that dragged him across the room to introduce himself at Rio; the one that used to pull him out of his bedroom and into June’s to open a magazine.  But that’s not what’s happening here. They’re not friends, even if Alex did see a glimmer of something resembling a personality while lying elbow to elbow with Henry on the dusty floor of a cupboard. It’s a PR stunt, nothing more, and they both have people who are literally employed to make sure they both come out of this looking good. No point in complicating it. In the end, Alex only reaches out when it’s time to shake Henry’s hand in farewell, and then he climbs into the back of the car and ignores the nagging sensation of something left unfinished. 2029 Alex rolls out the crick in his neck as he steps off the plane in Austin, his shoulders relaxing with every step into the familiar terminal. A couple of months into his second congressional term, he’s only just starting to feel like he really has a handle on the House schedule and the punishing weekly commute back and forth between Texas and DC—but just because he doesn’t have a spouse and kids to come home to like many of his colleagues on the Hill, it doesn’t mean he’s not still spending as much time in his district as he possibly can. Even if it does mean he has an even heavier reliance on caffeine than he did during college and more frequent flyer miles than he’ll ever know what to do with.

Fandom Trumps Hate 2023
fandomtrumpshate on Tumblr
2023 will be my fourth Fandom Trumps Hate auction. I’ve found it the most difficult writing I’ve done but I have absolutely loved the experience of working with the successful bidders and in some cases, pushing out of my comfort zone. I’m offering either Harry Potter or Sherlock, any pairing, but my work is mainly Harry/Severus (snarry or severitis) and John/Sherlock. I’ve also done cross-overs and they’re always some of my favorites, and have written other pairings in both fandoms.
The results of 2017 was Where You Hang Your Heart, a rework and expansion of an earlier story in Sherlock’s point of view. In 2019, a name I recognized from the Sherlock fandom won my services and to my surprise requested snarry.  That work was also a retelling of a popular story in that fandom, this time from Severus’ point of view. PuesdoPrince follows ProtoSnape to complete a series.  And in 2020, I delivered Queer Like Us, a fic about Harry and Severus reconnecting after a long time apart and a lot of growth and change.  It
So - 2023. You can find me under the suitesamba tag on the auction tag page - there’s a Tumblr but the auction is officially hosted on Dreamwidth.  This link should get you to my auction page.  Bidding starts on March 1st and ends March 5th but you can browse now. You can check out the pub dates and lengths of my previous auction fics on AO3 - I’ll start working with you right away but want to take the writing time the story needs.
Suitesamba’s Fandom Trumps Hate 2023 Auction Page
And if not on my services - please support the auction in some way.  The supported causes are all timely and critical and this year I’ll match the winning bid and donate to the cause of the bidder’s choice.

I've been trying to hold my tongue and not jump to conclusions but this just takes the cake BPP.
twitter. com / chain_7_/status/1630439943750434816.
This is after Seulgi said she won't sing Hype Boy so she doesn't "get into trouble" and company execs unironically called themselves Pink Bloods. I'm just astounded that this is still happening in 2023. Have things really not improved since 2017?
The depths of hatred, cringe, and ignorance from adults who should truly know better makes me almost want to weep Jesus Christ. I've read about SM group stans filing petitions with the Blue House of Korea because BTS won a kpop award and thought those days of insanity were behind us, but it's still happening NOW. It's amazing to me how all the things you said about kpop cultures in different companies is playing out in front of my eyes. I thought you were lying or exaggerating and truthfully, I've seen questionable behavior in army fandom too, but to see this kind of rot, from the top of that company, down to the fans who just mirror that sick banal behavior, and then the idols caught in the middle who can't even dance along to a popular song trend out of fear of angering their fans AND company executives. We are in hell.
And the gall of these people to then turn around and try to police armys' behavior?? It's giving Trump and Republicans 2.0 istg BPP and I'm sorry for ranting about this again in your inbox but seeing them sending trucks to Hybe building when they sat on their hands for decades while LSM skinned that company and the idols dry angers me so much! Did armys do something years ago to justify this hatred? Did BTS do something in 2013 that explains this behavior? I really don't understand how even SM executives can act like kpop stans on Twitter. Can you please explain this to me BPP??
Honestly, I get armys' behavior now. SM stans are everywhere in kpop and if I was surrounded with that kind of madness, I'd give them that energy back as well.
No matter if Hybe gets that majority stake or not, the things they have exposed in SM just in the last few weeks has soured my mind towards so many things in kpop and this is me being 100000% honest.
Yes I'm that petty.
I think you ignored my last ask because I had no evidence but I've included the link now. Is there any history of something BTS did that justifies more than a decade of hate and vitriol from fans of SM artists towards Hybe and anything connected to BTS? Real question so pls answer BPP.
***
Hi Anon,
Your link.
I ignored your asks not because you didn’t include evidence Anon. I ignored it because I honestly think you’re getting sucked in way too deep and I’ve seen this all happen before. As people prone to ‘discourse’ are wont to do, you seem to be getting far more invested into matters over which you have zero control, while stoking your anger over how the system works. And while giving you an outlet here could make you feel better and rally likeminded people to your cause, I feel it’s a counterproductive exercise at best because that also just further entrenches animosity and makes the whole space just more toxic.
But I feel you won’t move on unless you get an audience, so here we are. To answer the questions you asked:
There is nothing BTS or ARMY did years ago to justify the hate from the rest of k-pop fandom and from SM corporate executives towards anything connected to them. Except disrupting the system to be massively successful despite often doing the opposite of what was expected for a k-pop group and fandom, and still leaving the rest of the competition in the dust. Funny thing is SM executives way back in 2014 actually offered to buy BTS from Bang PD because they saw in them what we all see now. Bang PD obviously refused, and k-pop stans kept doing what k-pop stans do, as did the industry. Now, ARMYs today (especially after the Burning Sun madness in 2019 and the Jungkook gay club witch-hunt in 2020) have unfortunately gotten as good as the typical k-pop stan in giving back the same energy as good as they get, as well as platforming solo or akgae-lite voices in the fandom, and the fandom culture suffers significantly as a result. But yes the fact is that the animosity and hate towards BTS started out as a purely one-sided affair, with BTS and ARMYs taking the brunt of that insanity for years, until the last four years or so when ARMYs had the numbers to overwhelm the hate.
The typical k-pop stan is filled with resentment towards anything concerning BTS because they feel the group and fandom deserves to have a reckoning that will humble them. It’s a hatred that will persist for as long as BTS is at the top of the k-pop hierarchy because the underlying belief driving that hatred is that BTS does not deserve their status as other groups or idols are more deserving of the recognition and achievements. It’s why most of the criticism around BTS is centred around comparisons to ‘better’ groups or idols that aren’t getting the same recognition BTS is (obviously), regardless of the context. Or criticism around how BTS and the fandom respond to the system they’re situated in.
It’s essentially competition. With none of the sportsmanship, no referee in sight, and a mass of people who care more about ranting day and night about groups and fandoms they hate, rather than developing a knowledge base of the music and art created (however imperfectly) in this space. And what typically happens when competition becomes toxic and supercharged, is that it becomes politics.
That’s why the dynamics you see play out in k-pop fandoms is more akin to the dysfunctional political system in the US, rather than what you see in the Premier League (though they have their fair share of politics too). The typical k-pop stan is looking for Collective Guilt towards the fandom they hate to justify their behaviour since by that logic, BTS, yourself, and me are responsible for perceived slights done by the fandom, to other k-pop idols those stans support.
It’s why a couple weeks ago, a fan of SM groups walked into my replies, disagreed with me about Jungkook, but started cussing out ARMYs and the tannies immediately. That’s the kind of logical leap you make when you hate the subject, understand next to nothing about the underlying context, view the entire fandom of at least 5 million people as a uniform bloc, but are spoiling for a fight anyway.
This behaviour is also influenced by how the wider culture is dealing with a breakdown in civic institutions and traditional remediation channels. It’s happening everywhere now, not just in k-pop fandoms, but the structures informing those behaviours in k-pop have been entrenched for a long time.
And so Anon, I read your asks on SM, Hybe, k-pop and BTS and saw you’re falling into the same thinking patterns and beginning to conflate things that have no business being viewed together. For example:
Yes Seulgi skipped covering Hype Boy, but she was unclear about her reasons and there is no reason for you to fill in the gaps for her. Yes SM executives are explicitly, even somewhat myopically, anti-HYBE because they’ve tied up their economic interests with Kakao based on what has been disclosed so far, but that doesn’t mean every SM idol is prevented from enjoying art made by HYBE artists. You’re right about the culture of older k-pop companies and the fandoms of groups under those companies, but it’s pointless losing sleep over it because those behaviours are structurally supported.
There is nothing special about the hate BTS and those who love the group face in k-pop spaces. That hate is a function of how the system has been structured since at least 2009. If there was another k-pop group that approached the industry the way BTS did, and fostered the relationship with their fandom the way BTS did with ARMYs, they’d be on top and they’d be just as hated.
If hate from k-pop stans is something that bothers you, I suggest you avoid ‘discourse’, spend less time in k-pop fandom spaces online and try to build more fandom connections offline with a focus on what you genuinely love about BTS. Keep this SM-HYBE deal and the rest of k-pop discourse related to it at arms length because you cannot influence the outcome, and HYBE can take care of itself. For one thing you shouldn’t think your interests are identical to HYBE’s, but even if you were concerned, from a purely business standpoint HYBE’s downside in this deal is limited because they already own a stake they can always monetize later.
Detach, detox, and focus on what you love instead. It will do you far more good than getting upset over how millions of people behave in a system established by 20 years of incentives and culture.

I’m enjoying the chat that the PWHL is getting, and that NWSL has gotten, but at the same time I can’t help but compare it to the way the W is discussed, and why the difference? Is it because the WNBA has been around for longer and more continuously, so hasn’t had the reset that the other women’s leagues have had? Is it because soccer and hockey in other forms aren’t as popular as basketball? Is it because the players are predominantly black and masc and gay? Is it because it’s not wholly independent of the male pro league counterpart? Is my perception clouded because people online have irrational hatred of the W? Is it all of the above? It seriously would make for an interesting thesis or something. I’m happy that other women’s sports are having success but seeing the wnba be constantly shat upon is always going to be disheartening because I love watching it, not for any altruistic reason but because the play is intense and gritty. But trying to tell people about it falls on deaf ears
NWSL and PWHL have some kind of viral internet power that the WNBA doesn't have. I've been trying to figure out why for a very long time.
A lot of soccer fans told me it was the 2019 world cup that made NWSL viral. Megan Rapinoe was America's hero against the Trump supervillain.
Okay. Haven't WNBA players done a dozen things like that? Don't people remember the 2020 bubble season when the WNBA helped Democrats win power over the Senate? Don't people remember the name Brittney Griner? Where's our viral internet following? Why is there still 200 NWSL blogs for every 1 WNBA blog?
Trolls say the same things about our female basketball stars as they say about Megan Rapinoe. But this only seemed to strengthen Rapinoe's internet fanbase. It made her a hero. But when our basketball players get the same treatment from trolls, there's no corresponding army of fans.
I can understand why male trolls hate women's basketball. But I don't understand why women are indifferent about the WNBA.
The viral power of female obsessive internet fanbases is what holds up half the global entertainment industry. TV shows. The Swiftie phenomenon. NWSL. Even crusty twitch streamers and youtubers get love from tumblrinas. There are huge tumblr fandoms for that stuff. I think it's a big deal for any entertainment product to get that female obsessive internet fanbase power. And that buzz just doesn't exist for the WNBA. The internet fandom girls are apathetic about the WNBA.
Why? What feeds these fandoms? What is the WNBA missing? Is it really just too black and gay? Drag Race is black and gay and everyone loves it. Then people peek through the windows of the WNBA world but they don't come inside.

Harry Potter changed my life and brought me so many friends both online and in brickspace. But between the anti trans lobbying of JK Rowling, and the blatant Anti-Semitic elements of the new video game, I'm not able to find joy in it any more.
I have decided to auction off my two Harry Potter Funko Pop Advent Calendars. I asked the mods @fandomtrumpshate if I could join their event and got the OK!
I will pay for domestic shipping and am willing to negotiate international shipping for a larger donation or a PayPal reimbursement. There will be two separate auctions, but if the same person wins both I'll combine shipping.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the 2018 calendar has the doors ripped off , is missing the outer sleeve and the pop up tree. There is a slight age warp to the top flap. All the figures are in good condition .

the 2019 calendar has the sleeve, all the doors and figrues.
If you would like an in depth photo of any part or figure feel free to ask .

Sherlock's Homes Foundation
Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund
I will also agree to a donation to The Trevor Project or another pro Jewish and/or pro Queer charity if you ask ahead of time and I can look it up.
Please share this around, I'm trying to get as much visibility as possible.

3, 15, 27!
3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
I've actually written a lot of fic I'm really happy with this year, but I'll say I especially love the past, the future, the doorway, a modern AU Sandman fic told entirely via a livejournal community. It has a workskin made by the incredible @stardreamerl0ve and I had a lot of fun putting it together with her. The fabulous @mandolinearts also made the book cover in there, so it was really just a gift to get to collaborate with friends and celebrate the internet fan communities I spend so much time in.
15. What WIP are you taking into next year with you?
I've been trying to avoid posting fics I'm not confident I'll finish, so I'm thrilled to say I have no recent WIPs that are languishing on Ao3! That being said, the fics I have in word docs that I absolutely do intend to finish are the eldritch!Dream Dreamling fic, a sequel to pie of birds and grief and ocean water about change and dancing, and a few Shadowgast fics (the Star Trek AU, first and foremost). Finally, there's always (may the bridges I have burned) light my way back home, which I wrote the eighth chapter of for Fandom Trumps Hate this year and will, I swear to god, someday finish. That one's been an albatross around my neck since 2019.
27. What do you listen to while writing?
Sometimes, nothing, like a psychopath! Often a massive Spotify playlist on shuffle entitled "Stuff" of every song I've ever liked since about mid-sophomore year of high school. Sometimes a single song on loop of whatever I've fixated on at the time (Dessa, blu eyes, and Rina Sawayama have been good for this lately). Finally, if I'm having trouble focusing and need music without words, I like Philip Ayers ("It's Not a Game" is a good track to start with if you're not familiar).
Lastly, writing this right now I've got my Spotify Wrapped on shuffle, and currently it's "Grade School Games" by Dessa.

A lot of what is said above is true in my opinion, but I think the driving force wasn't anything about the show itself, but the environment in which it landed, when Steven universe aired and how the world changed in that time, along with where a good deal of the audience started and how the audience changed. X main points:
Steven universe aired from 2013-2019, during a time of change for the political landscape of the USA, especially surrounding queer issues. Gay marriage was THE talking point for much of the USA, followed by trans issues. This meant there were a lot of christian raised (or heavily christian cultured) young people discovering their queerness or the queerness of their friends and flipping sides to pro queer without having to fundamentally challenge their world view. They thought like Christians before, they thought like Christians after, and one of the core thought patterns of cultural Christians is sorting things into good and bad with little nuance. These people were very loudly not christian without having removed themselves from the thought patterns that define Christianity, very angry at their families, and loudly gay/pro gay without having an ounce of understanding of greater cultural queer issues.
Around the same time, and no coincidentally in my mind, we saw the rise of fandom activism with a culturally christian bend - the obsession with consumption of media defining you as a person, ships chosen for their unimpeachable moral superiority, and, of course, the harassment of "bad/evil" people who shipped nasty evil things and watched bad shows. If you can't change the world, you can at least harass your neighbor/the person on tumblr who has evil bad ships. And, as is common with the culturally christian, the lines drawn were zero nuance, almost entirely emotionally driven, and often arbitrary. They even used the same arguments (Think of the children!).
Finally, we saw the rise of the alt right and Donald Trump in particular as big bads for these people to focus on. With such obvious enemies in front of them these kids, looking for something to anchor them as they tried to distance them from Christianity, ironically latched onto opposition of "the bad guys" as their primary moral motivation, which is of course an extremely christian thing to do (and one of the worst aspects of christianity), but it was different enough superficially that they thought they had succeeded in breaking away.
So we had a notable population of politically enthusiastic older teens that based their activism around the idea that the height of moral activism was attacking "the bad guys" (with targets often chosen in direct defiance to their family), focusing a lot of their attention on an emotionally driven fandom as politics ideology, and ranging from zero understand of to openly hostile to concepts of grey morality and nuance.
Along comes Steven Universe, a show about grey morality and nuance, how decent people can and will do horrible things, and putting in the effort to reconcile with family and enemies.
The actual quality of the show simply did not matter. The fact it embraced these ideas so unapologetically earned it enemies from the very beginning from people who craved a story about simple villains that got what was coming to them. A show literally saying "hey maybe your racist uncle can change" is the very last thing these people wanted and even the suggestion was offensive to them. So they picked it apart, took everything in the worst possible faith, etc. They had no real reason to hate it with the passion they did and it made them look like an idiot if they couldn't cite a properly severe reason, eventually resulting in absurd, lowest common denominator arguments like "Rebecca Sugar is a nazi".
Once the discourse started it was self sustaining as these people sought to elevate their moral high ground by punching down. Being "enlightened" enough to hate Steven Universe (and other shows), which was on its face a good, progressive show, because you were in the know about why it was evil bad was a badge of honor among this group. Railing against it was a way to signal your virtue, and judging others for liking it and the creators for creating it made you better than them.
people discovering steven universe in 2023 are always like "this show is really good why the hell were yall so weird about it"
