What's your favourite movie you saw in theatres this year?

I was just talking about this yesterday - time was I’d roll up at the Multiplex and have already seen every single film showing... Now I take my kid like once a year. The last film we went to was either Encanto or Addams Family 2, whichever one of those is newer.

What do you usually wear?

Oversized t-shirts, rockabilly circle skirts, and my beloved creepers usually.

5'5"

What's your star sign? Do you share a birthday with a celebrity or a historical event?

Leo. I was born the same day as Princess Beatrice, as my nan never fails to comment on each year.

Do you go by your name or a nickname?

My own name, and then whatever my current penname is for fandom.

Did you grow up to become what you wanted to be when you were a child?

I wanted to write children’s stories. Then to be a teacher. In secondary school I thought about maybe working in translation. I ended up in local politics for a decade instead and doing lots of very sensible stuff. Now I make dollhouse miniatures and am writing a book on UFO sightings. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Are you in a relationship? If not, who is your crush if you have one?

Yup, married about five years now. (my partner is very much the romantic date remembering one in our relationship!)

What's something you're good at vs. something you're bad at?

I’m far too good at focusing on the bad, unfortunately. And I’m bad at being organised and sticking with things long term. :(

Dogs or cats?

Dogs. I would like a cat one day though...

If you draw/write, or create in any way, what's your favourite picture/favourite line/favourite etc. from something you created this year?

My fave fic is pretty much always whichever one I’ve just finished writing - at least until I start writing the next one! In crafting terms I’m pleased with the (albeit slow...) progress of a few projects:

What's something you'd like to create content for?

There are so many fandoms I’d like to write for at some point. I always return to tinker with the Superman/Jimmy Olsen longfic I’ve had in drafts for years, but I seriously doubt it’ll ever end up getting posted.

What's something you're currently obsessed with?

I’m deep in a Star Wars fandom phase at the moment. :) Just, Anakin destroying everything he’s ever held dear with his own greed. I love it.

What's something you were excited about that turned out to be disappointing this year?

Tory party collapsing? They keep hanging on for grim death.

What's a hidden talent of yours?

Speed reading. One of the few things I learned at university that stuck.

Are you religious?

No.

What's something you wish to have at this moment?

Tea. It’s getting to the point where I might have to put the kettle on myself...

is that piece of media actually bad, or is it just not following the blueprint you projected onto it? is that work actually not good, or are you just demanding something from it that is absolutely antithetical to its themes, genre, tone, and narrative goal? is that story actually poorly written, or do you just dislike that it is not the specific things you wanted from it that it never set out to be, never was, and never is going to become? is it actually bad, or is it actually well-executed and you just dislike the story it chose to be because it isn't catering to your specific desires and expectations?

Please understand that there are cultural differences and language differences, if you see this happening let the person clarify what they meant, that person might just not be familiar with words the western side of the internet use

you know, you know. no gods, no masters, no kings on pedestals. everyone is fallible. death of the author. you know! you are balanced about your intake of media - you allow the wiggle room, the grace, the gratitude, the skepticism. nobody above criticism.

but still. a weird gut-punch feeling, something akin to betrayal. you read the article. surprise! an author you love is actually: a serial fucking predator.

well, shit. what now. no, you knew he was a person (all people are), but now you're wondering - what have i overlooked by accident? what messages have i internalized that are strange and cruel? and also, like, what the fuck?

his actions lay a thick glaze on top of everything. like each place is now ruined, opaque in a new way. but okay, fine, you've done this before. you knew better, right? you've been betrayed by many a cherished childhood author.

still, this stickiness. fuck. can you pick up that book again. will you read it to your children. you've recommended it to others - will you ever do that again? and of course, of course, no parasocial relationships. you were theoretically above this kind of sentiment. but the artist informs the art, right.

so it's not something as clear-cut as feeling he owed you, specifically (a stranger) better behavior - just that you kind of, in a distant and odd way... sort of trusted him to do better. it's not like a real trust or something speakable, just the faint hope that the product (good books) was a thin representation of the soul. now it feels like the product (good? books?) was a mask. in some small or insignificant way, your previous support of this person lent them power. your money and your time and your laughter.

and the thing is - you have this terrible, echoing sensation. how many times will this happen? over and over. you find out that the singer you love is actually a predator. you learn over drinks that your favorite high school english teacher is in jail for what he did to her. you listen to the news idly and suddenly discover that a woman you used to idolize has been abusing her kids for an actual eon.

what can you touch without the static melting off. you can't even really complain about it too much (you were supposed to know better, and besides, you don't want the same re-split "it's not your fault, love what you love" basic advice), but now it's here. somehow, it feels like - you let him into your life.

it's not that things need to be pure or an artist has to be like, endlessly perfect, mindful. demure. it's more just this terrible truth that has been replayed through your veins so often it feels criminally vain. power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. did you want any one person to be worth that power?

it's just that he wrote books where he seemed to understand that. he seemed to know about hierarchies and unfair systems and bigotry and privilege. you thought they were books about what it means to struggle. you thought they were about having power and still using it for good rather than for control. he spooned you a narrative of being a good guy, a kind soul. you fucking bought what that fucking monster sold.

maybe that's why they were fantasies, after all.

hey, just as a btw, a fic or a series not uploading for a year doesn't mean its abandoned.

Sometimes the authors have shit going on, other wips, or! it just needs to sit and marinate for a bit. Collecting all the flavor and details it wouldn't have otherwise.

it's okay for updates to take a while.

And if you're impatient? Why not leave a nice comment telling us (the author(s)) what you love about the fic or series? say that you love it, and are "waiting eagerly for the next chapter" and/or that you "would love to see x or y happen because it would mean-"

This could be a new fandom vibe because of all the "i have to drop this while people are still interested" energy, but its not universal, and i don't believe its good for the fandom ecosystem.

Have patience, and have compassion. Remember that authors are human and these fics? (or comics, animatics, whatever) This is our art. We care about it just as much, if not more than you.

They actually tried putting a bell on it once, but the quiet evasive predator didn't enjoy the idea of a loud obnoxious bell attached to it's neck.

I think it's really funny that everyone seems to be misinterpreting the recent Ratiorine crumbs we got, running with the idea that Aventurine thinks Ratio is actually a gentle scholar.

In the original video, Tingyun starts listing off people working with her group as models, but she only describes rather than names them: she has a lazy general (Jing Yuan), a gentle scholar (Ruan Mei), and a cool/laconic swordsman (Blade--how she got him, lord only knows).

Aventurine then gets visibly confused (that's what his "?" is all about), because the people that come to his mind for "general," "scholar," and "swordsman" don't remotely fit the adjectives Tingyun used. He thinks of Feixiao (the opposite of lazy), Sushang (the opposite of edgy), and, of course Ratio--the opposite of gentle. (As @hundredsspoons pointed out too, the Ratio emoji used is even the angry one where Ratio is throwing his e-chalk; this doctor is at his least gentle, lol.)

It's still definitely a Ratiorine crumb; Aventurine's first thought for "scholar who is hot enough to be a model" is Ratio, rather than any woman, but this is actually Aventurine thinking of Ratio as the dead opposite of Tingyun's description; he is not affirming Ratio is deep down secretly a marshmallow here.

Aventurine knows his man is a bit of an ass and accepts it as-is. 😂
