Follow the eligibility criteria regarding age, experience level, etc. (if mentioned).
4.  Work on the Floral Art You Would Like to Feature in the Competition
Are you tempted by any particular flower to work on? What are your favorite mediums for floral paintings on canvas? Do you prefer natural light or would rather go for a studio setup to end up with the desired effect? So many things can plague your mind before you can pre-sketch your artwork, because you always strive to be THE BEST! Follow the organizer’s guidelines and specifications to paint the floral masterpieces. Yes, take the call and some baby steps to turn all the acclaims and praises your way. 5.  Fill Up the Required Submission Forms for Competitions: Add Personal Touches
Conform to the norms as you fill up your name and credentials, apart from uploading artworks in the required format. Don’t forget to add a piece of story to your floral art, i.e., the title, medium, your motivation to paint, etc.
Often there are nominal submission fees charged by competition platforms and galleries. Pay them through a secure payment channel and links provided by the organizers. Check all the details before you hit the submit button.
6.  Circulate the News of Your Selection on Social Media Handles
Do some self-promotion and social media leveraging after your artwork gets selected for the competition, by sharing the details of the art platform, event link, details of your paintings of flowers, and your story behind the creation. Some online art galleries like TERAVARNA encourage artists with interactive Q & A sessions, live chats, etc. Stay tuned and respond to comments so that you get more people to know your art. Build connections with social networking and join artists groups sharing your passion for flower art.
7.       Follow Up with the Leads and Inquiries: Give a Portfolio Boost
It is very important to have genuine feedback from the viewers apart from the jurors of the events. Follow the leads and enquiries closely as it can generate sales for you. Take up your participation as a stepping-stone for the future competitions and events and add them to your portfolio. Yes, success matters! A sincere follow-up will sky-rocket your visibility and chance of potential buyers!
Conclusion:
Hurray! Just taking these few things chalked out, you can dash for any online flower-themed art event and grab the spotlight. Celebrate the aura of flowers through your artsy ways. Show up the flower power with remarkable flower art paintings and wait for your turn to drop jaws!

How To Create Beautiful Flower Art Paintings
Tumblr media
Creating flower art paintings is one of the earliest types of art most of us attempt. As children, these flowers are more animated in our sketchbooks, but they continue to become more realistic floral art paintings with consistent efforts and practice. However, fine-tuning your skills always requires a conscious willingness to improve and understand the nuances of art.
As a beginner artist, here are some tips you can utilize to improve your paintings of flowers and become a pro in your art.
Observe Real Flowers
Observation is the best teacher anyone can have. What you can learn from observation is not something others can teach you. Whenever you get a chance, observe the flowers that you wish to paint. Observe their color, the way they darken at certain places, their pollen, leaves, and other minor details.
Once you start noticing such details, you will be able to add them to your floral paintings on canvas as well. Moreover, it is always the small details that make a big difference in your paintings. A close observation of these flowers will also give you a better understanding of the colors and you will be able to create more accurate color tones for better results.
Take Photographs of the Flower Arrangements
If you wish to paint floral arrangements or flower still life paintings of real flowers, make sure you click multiple photographs of the arrangement as soon as you can. Do not wait for the flowers to start decaying. Also, check if you have clicked photographs in good lighting and from multiple angles. Once you are satisfied with the photographs, print them out for more efficient references. Having printed photographs is much easier to work with as compared to digital ones, but of course it eventually all depends on your comfort zone.
A major advantage of clicking pictures for your floral artwork is that you can then take time to create your artwork without having to worry about the decay of flowers. Some flowers decay really fast and completely change appearance, which can cause hindrance in your painting. Having photographs for reference saves you from that worry and prevents you from rushing the painting.
Use Brown For Darker Petals
Let me in you on a little secret — there is no black color in nature. Yes, you read that right! When you see a petal decaying, it turns to the darkest shades of brown which appears as black to us. However, it doesn’t change the fact that it is brown and not black.
So next time when you are trying to achieve a decaying effect in your flower art painting, use darker tones of brown instead of black. This will also help you achieve multiple effects in the same floral painting. Mix different quantities of black in your brown to achieve that darkened effect. With a variety in that browning effect, your painting will have a more realistic appearance because it is very rare to find the same color tones in different elements of nature.
Place your Focus Point Away from the Center
Your focus point in any painting is what first catches the eyes of the viewer. To add more depth to your flower art painting, it is best to place the focus point slightly away from the exact center of your frame. This also allows the subject of the painting, which in this case would probably be a flower, to get some breathing space in the frame.
Moreover, it lets viewers explore the overall painting and let the composition guide their eyes to the focal point. In short, a well-placed focus point in your painting will give your viewers more time to explore and engage with the artwork. This also allows them to engage better with your paintings.
Study the Famous Flower Paintings by Masters
As already discussed, others can seldom teach what you can learn by yourself from observation. Take this a step further to study the famous flower paintings created by famous artists. Study their brushstrokes, floral arrangements, choice of subject, colors, and the overall effect that they aimed to create with their painting.
Study how their color choices have affected the composition and how the placement of the subject and play with light has changed the mood of the painting. These studies will give you a generic idea of what you may or may not want to do in your painting. Even if you want to create abstract flower paintings, it is best to study the works of the masters first. Remember, you don’t always need to follow or like the works of masters and are always free to create your own style and art. However, studying their works expands your horizons and increases the possibilities of exploration that you may have not thought of otherwise.
Master Flower Art Paintings with PracticeCreating flower art paintings is not only an art style but also a very therapeutic process. It brings you closer to nature, improves your botanical knowledge, and also helps you calm your mind. If you are a beginner, take the creation process as easy or as fast as you are comfortable. Once you start getting comfortable, challenge yourself with more complex compositions. You can even take part in different flower painting competitions to test your skills and learn from other contemporary artists.

Self Portrait in a Straw Hat
Artist: Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (French, 1755-1842)
Date: 1782
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: The National Gallery, London, United Kingdom
Élisabeth Louise Vigée-LeBrun
Elizabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun’s life spanned a tumultuous period of French history. Born in Paris in 1755, she was the daughter of a portrait painter, Louis Vigée. His early death in 1767 left her without a teacher, so she was largely self-taught. Her husband, the art dealer Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Le Brun, played a significant role in her early career by providing her with important contacts and commissions. She adopted his name but eventually left him – the marriage was formally dissolved in 1794.
In the years preceding the French Revolution in 1789, Vigée Le Brun enjoyed great success, particularly at the Versailles court. One of the most successful society portraitists of her time, she was also one of only four women admitted to the Académie royale de la peinture et de sculpture during the eighteenth century. She became the preferred painter of Marie-Antoinette and painted over 30 portraits of the Queen and her family. A portrait of Marie-Antoinette wearing a simple white cotton chemise and holding a rose caused a scandal when exhibited at the Salon in 1783 because of its informality. Following the arrest of the royal family in October 1789, Vigée Le Brun fled Paris and did not return until 1802.
Self Portrait in a Straw Hat is a signed copy by Vigėe Le Brun of a very popular self portrait she had painted in Brussels in 1782. The portrait was exhibited in the same year at the Salon de la Correspondance in Paris and at the 1783 Salon of the Académie royale. It is now in the collection of the baronne Edmond de Rothschild.

April 20, Beijing, China, National Museum of China/中国国家博物馆 (Part 1 - Dehua white porcelain exhibition/德化白瓷展):
Aaand finally, the National Museum of China/中国国家博物馆! I was lucky enough to see the famed Dehua white porcelain exhibition/德化白瓷展 here. Some of you may recognize some of these pieces already, since pictures and shorts of them have been circulating online way before I went on this trip, but there are many many other pieces too. The pieces I post here are only a small portion of the entire exhibition, so if you ever get a chance to see the exhibition elsewhere in person, don't hesitate. This stuff is amazing.
First up is one of the two that has been gaining popularity online, the piece named 神话 or "Legend".
Tumblr media
The first time I saw a porcelain piece like this, I thought that the clothing part was made with paper? But no, the light fabric of the clothing, the hair, it's all porcelain. Keep in mind when looking through these pictures: every part of every piece is porcelain.
Tumblr media
This piece is the other one that was becoming popular, the piece named simply 纸, or "Paper". If you don't look up close and see the glossy surface, you can't tell it's actually porcelain. I cannot for the life of me imagine the kind of magic that was used to turn clay into this
Tumblr media
Anyway, this is a good point to introduce Dehua porcelain a little bit. Dehua porcelain is a regional specialty of Dehua/德化, which is located in Fujian province, and is known for its expressiveness and white color. For this reason it's also known in the West as "Blanc de Chine" (French: "white of China"), and this should be the reason why this exhibition is named 中国白, which basically means the same thing. The history of Dehua porcelain goes back to Song dynasty (960 - 1279), and it is still being produced today. Many of the pieces I'm posting here are modern pieces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Dehua white porcelain can be colored too (I imagine the color must be painted on later, because the white comes from the clay itself), and when it is colored, it looks like it came right out of a painting
Tumblr media
This piece is especially amazing to me. Look at the texture, look at those details. Zoom in and you will find that there are actually a bunch of porcelain ants on this porcelain tree stump. Porcelain ants. I never expected to use porcelain as an adjective when describing ants. Wtf. It's like a manifestation of a scene from an older animated movie.
Tumblr media
Peanuts are called 花生 in Chinese, which literally means "flower grow", and because it also has a long shelf life, it symbolizes longevity and a happy marriage. Also a fun fact: because Watson of Sherlock Holmes is usually phoenetically translated as 华生 (huá shēng) in Chinese and sounds similar to 花生 (huā shēng), you will find that many in the Chinese SH fandom refers to Watson as "peanut".
Tumblr media
This piece is titled 春色满园, or "garden filled with spring scenery". This is also a common 4-character word used to describe gardens in spring. I'm guessing the figure depicted here is one of the flower gods. It is one of my personal favorites because of its superb depiction of movement, it's as if the flower god will really fly away on clouds at any moment
Tumblr media
More depictions of traditional Chinese deities, specifically Chang'e/嫦娥, the moon goddess. That moon rabbit is too cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Depictions of what I'm assuming is the Four Heavenly Kings/四大天王, based on the items they are holding. The Four Heavenly Kings are Buddhist deities.
Tumblr media
Look at her clothing! That porcelain is so thin it's almost see-through! Also is it depicting Li Qingzhao/李清照, the famous female poet from Song dynasty? She does have a famous ci poem that's about paddling a boat in a lake full of lotuses while drunk
Tumblr media
The piece titled 锦绣前程, or "future as vibrant and prosperous as silk brocade". This is also a common 4-character word used in well wishing. The figure in this piece is holding a xiuqiu/绣球, a ball made of silk, which was usually seen as a token of love
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somewhat more modern-themed pieces:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Among the hundreds of amazing pieces, this one caught my attention for its unique texture. When everyone else was trying to turn the clay into these thin sheets representing fabric or paper or flower petals, this artist took the noodle approach. Not many visitors seemed to like it, but I think it's pretty cool
Tumblr media
Piece titled 运势如虹, or "fortune like the rainbow", also a 4-character word used in well wishing. Traditionally horses symbolize vitality and success, hence why many people use the words 马到成功 ("horse's arrival brings success") and 龙马精神 ("vitality of dragons and horses") in well wishes during Year of the Horse
Tumblr media
Stay tuned for Part 2 of the Dehua white porcelain exhibition!

The more I think about it, "I liked the framing device, but I would have liked it better if the art didn't depict something yucky" is such a fucking brutal thing to say, and I don't know if it's more or less so due to the fact that people who say that don't intend it as an insult. Like most people could not come up with something that hurtful on purpose.
Imagine going to an art gallery and looking at a world-famous piece of classic art and going "oh, some parts of this are pretty! I love the gilded frames and the little carved curly decorations! If only it didn't have that big ugly dark stain in the middle", and by the 'big dark stain' they mean the actual painting, that has been framed by the pretty gilded frame around it. Like the frame is the best part of the painting, and would be so much better without the painting.
Or going to a restaurant, ordering a dish and going "ooh, I love this dish! It's so pretty, the flowers painted into the porcelain and the little gilded edges, I love it. If only it weren't for that disgusting slop right in the middle of it."
You mean the fucking soup??? The whole point that the dish is there to serve?
