shame that a lot of people only know goya for his black paintings (mostly just saturn devouring his son, really,) because his works were really good in general and not just when he was going insane painting on his walls. here's one of my favorites, "man picking fleas from a little dog"
#^ not an art historian or anything in fact i know admittedly very little about most famous painters. i just vibe w goya#thought about this painting while picking fleas off my not-so-little dog#been said before but imagine being a prime court painter and the work you're most known for is sumn creepy you painted in ur kitchen#not intending for anyone to see... wild#like. if he hadn't painted something insane near his death he would have faded into obscurity#despite being FAR from underappreciated in his prime. art is crazyyyyy#francisco goya#fey rambles#*semi-obscurity i mean he would've still been in museums and stuff lol

Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.
In just over a decade he created approximately 2100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold, symbolic colours, and dramatic, impulsive and highly expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.
Van Gogh became famous after his suicide at age 37, which followed years of poverty and mental illness.

Pioneering paleontologist Mary Anning was born #OTD (21 May 1799 – 9 March 1847). Let's also take a moment to appreciate her beloved dog companion, Tray:
1. Detail from Denise Dutton's 2021 Mary Anning statue at Lyme Regis (love the little detail of the ammonite in the ear!)
2. Detail from the original portrait painting of Anning by an unknown artist, before 1842, now at Natural History Museum, London
3. Sketch by Mary! Part of her personal papers, now held by Natural History Museum, London.
