Lorck Edmundsen, Second mate. * summer 1762, Faaborg, Denmark - ………† summer 1771, Lost at Sea

Early life

The second of three sons in a hardworking, godfearing miller's family of long standing, Lorck had an innate knack for everything involving the trade of his ancestors. The family's stout windmill, one century old and situated in the hills near Faaborg on Funen, Denmark, made him ever so proud. He enjoyed the hard physical labour he was made part of from childhood on, loved to tackle the technical challenges and mysteries of the mill, and was always up for lively conversations with the people from all over bringing grain or collecting flour.

Last but not least he was greatly intrigued by the workings of the weather, the wind and sun, spending many hours of his spare time on top of a hill or on the footwalk of the mill itself, to watch the clouds form above land or sea, to see them speeding towards him, over him, around him, depending on the whims of the day. Already as a boy his father and uncle consulted him on weather predictions concerning the mill. The future of the familytrade was said to lay in Lorck's capable hands.

Career

When his father sent him to Copenhagen as a youngster, on the customary trip "to become a man", this all changed. At once deeply in love with the young lady of leisure he spent his time with, Lorck imagined a life with her. He proposed to Lovise Agger on the fourth night of their acquaintance, and she declared him a foolish dreamer, but accepted nonetheless. Forseeing that his strict parents would never welcome a girl like Lovise as his bride, Lorck needed to be financially independent to make their marriage happen. He applied as seaman on the Birger Jarl as the fastest way to do this, already rising to midschipman within the two voyages he had calculated on to bring in the money. Finding Lovise dead and gone upon his return, a life of rage and escape dominated his next seasons. Wanting to be as far away as possible, as unreachable as possible, as occupied as possible, Lorck never returned home and became a seafarer for good, though because of his destructive habits, forever stuck at the rank of midshipman.

Recruited by Captain Beaudard of the Marianna, winter 1766, for a journey half the circumference of the world, an understanding was formed between both men during the passing of Denmark, needing hardly any words. On the Marianna's second and third voyage, Lorck served as Second mate. With that position, he returned to his time-old fascination with weather and gained a thorough knowledge of the celestial bodies beyond the earth as well.

Death

Lorck Edmundsen, born summer 1762, was declared dead summer 1771, lost at sea three years earlier. Having barely stayed in touch with his family, who regarded his sudden change of heart as uncomprehensible and an act of betrayal towards the family, his death was taken as nothing more than a fact. Yet, every sunday at church his mother would light a candle for him, and his brothers kept retelling tales of him every time they were drunk.

I went to go see this guy when I was down in LA. I never met him, but my grandfather was a dust bowl kid from Missouri who made his way in Los Angeles (when there were still farms in the San Fernando valley) in early radio and film. I was 3 months pregnant with my daughter (my oldest child) when I dedicated to the coven/tradition I was brought up in. My coven was present at the births of both my children, with my HPS being my doula and my coven sister as her assistant. Both my babes had Witching ceremonies when they were a year old. I recall many rituals with them as infants, sleeping on my chest in their carriers. The kids of the coven have always figured into our magic, both in my original trad and in #americanfolkloricwitchcraft. To some rituals, they were welcome. Some were not appropriate for kids, and so we made arrangements for them. Within AFW, children of corded members are allows to take the green cord at the Age of Reason, the red adoption cord at the Age of Puberty, and the triple cord of a fully raised witch at the Age of Majority. My oldest was 11 when she took the red, and she was the first corded member of AFW aside from me and my ex wife Natalie (the founders). She turns 18 in two months. She won't be ready on her birthday to undergo initiation, but she is actively dedicated to the pursuit of that initiation. My son is 14 and took the green cord when he was 11. He hasn't officially asked to take the red, and we don't push. The choice to be a witch, to be blood bound as family to the coven had to come from the individual. At their Witchings, I made sacred vows to let them choose their own paths, giving them access to my own. I've done my best to honor those vows. The More the Merrier

It’s no surprise that every Christmas, families make sure that no space on the table is left unused, may it be the shape of a square, rectangle, or even a rounded one. All corners, gaps, should be filled with food and other treats.

That’s  Filipino culture: bringing out the best and liveliest table every holiday. To the point that some families go beyond their financial capability to seek for a happier holiday.

Likewise, my family follows this culturally-rooted trend as well as the others. I have two sisters and an auntie who plans and prepares the holiday meals. But unlike other households, mine like to experiment a lot. They tend to avoid typically-eaten dishes (spaghetti) while considering the plate preferences of each individual in the house. Picking out food isn’t tough at all if the cooking is tasty as hell. Which in my case, HELL YEAH! - no biases 

But last Christmas, I experienced something truly different with this household of mine: 

Watching a  Christmas-themed horror movie on the 25th. 

So how did that happen?

After preparing the dishes, alongside with the plates, glasses, and utensils, everyone was ready to have a feast. The TV was ON in the living room and my sister sparked an idea: “Let’s watch a horror movie!”. Upon hearing that, I felt the excitement rising within me as I just knew the perfect movie for that day. 

[A week before the 25th, my brother and I watched a movie called “Better Watch Out”. Vaguely speaking, it’s about a boy and his guardian, stuck in the house while his parents are away on the Christmas Eve. Sounds plain and boring right? But that’s because you haven’t gone to the 3 plot twists of the story. And trying to guess each of them will surely put you in a ride all night till you finish the entire movie.]

My auntie began to set up the table, whereas my brother set up the TV for the horror-movie screening. I was all psyched and pumped up with my black dress as I was ready to watch the show and chow. 

I glanced to my left and right, quietly observing the shocked, scared, and concerned faces of my relatives. Some are quite The Expressionist if u ask me, and some reactions come with unmatched pitches that eventually fill up the room.

A Merry Christmas indeed!
