I haven't done much art recently because I'm burning out a tiny bit, but thankfully I'll have some time off from the graphic studio soon. I'm looking forward to recharging, but I also want to try a thing I've been wondering about!

I finally understand how CMYK layer separation works and I want to see if I can screen print it! So I'm still going to the graphic studio lol, but now for fun, not work :3

I've got a small pile of unanswered asks, sorry for the wait! got myself busy again with other projects, like a christmas themed kids book I need to get done by thanksgiving.

I've been noticing that when my uncle has the books printed, they come out very dark and muddy, which is not great! I tried to research rgb to cmyk conversion and ran into all sorts of different advice on which profiles to use, found that most of the instructions rely on very specific art software, only to ultimately learn that many places used for printing art will just apply their own cmyk profile anyways. which can actually make the colors worse if you already converted the file yourself.

and furthermore, the problem is extra bad with these books because my uncle has been going through Amazon and they use a variety of third party printers! based on the results with the books, I'd say they're cutting costs with low quality cheap printers >:/ which means there's nothing I can actually do on my end to ensure that the illustrations accurately print with the colors I'm using.

However. I don't give up so easy. I've seen artists make all sorts of color choices just so the end results looks a specific way under specific circumstances. Like using negative colors so the image only looks "normal" when it's been inverted. or using blue and red so the image looks different based on whether it's under a red lens or a blue lens. making color illusions like that blue/black vs white/gold dress or the illusion of grey strawberries looking red when they're surrounded by cyan. I did a final project in college on the topic of color illusion, making my own example paintings.

So I know a thing or two about color strategy. and I am not losing a war against low quality cheap printers, not today. I spent a while looking for cmyk color charts and palettes, testing images through an online cmyk converter, and I have finally achieved my goal. the final test will come when the book is done and sent to print. essentially, I just ran a cmyk color chart through a converter to see how it might look after being printed, then set the original and the converted version next to each other on my file. I can now use the brighter original colors but base the colors I pick on how they'll look in the printed result rather than how they look on my screen. this means the version on my screen is far more pastel than I would normally go for! but the test results so far prove the method, and I think this book will print just fine.

by golly I am not going to let Amazon keep turning my hard work into muddied disasters. I get paid for these illustrations and I'll make them look good in print by any means available to me.

just figure out what the end result needs to look like and pick the brighter color accordingly. should make the low quality print jobs look at least passingly decent! sometimes you really have to plan ahead to make things look the way you want.

Powerpuff girls deserves the TMNT treatment where every iteration is wildly different from the last. Here ya go! Pulling inspiration from the original, reboot, and anime!

Before we start, I think I should state the most obvious and potentially controversial change: Buttercup's color isn't green.

I did this for three reasons: 1. It gives the girls the CMYK color scheme, 2. I thought it fit her dangerous but still 'girly' self more effectively, and 3. Her name is... Buttercup....

Ok back to your regularly scheduled notes!

Backstory:

In a world where superpowers are the next arms race, the government hired a small team of scientists working outside of Shichi, Japan to make superhuman soldiers. They agreed and so they, including one Professor Utonium (true name: unknown), bioengineered the triplet children of a young astronaut woman who wouldn’t be able to care for them. They injected her with a chemical concoction (including sugar, spice, everything nice, and the ever-mysterious Chemical X), manipulated some choice genes, and studied her thoroughly throughout her pregnancy.

As the months went by, the government became impatient for their weapons and displeased when they ended up being infants, scrapping the project and ordering the subjects to be killed. As Utonium had grown close to the woman (any romantic feelings went nowhere trust me), he stole the girls and ran away with them instead of killing them. 

Luckily for him, Shichi had a large and often untracked orphan population. There, he would give the three children to an orphanage so they could hopefully be raised normally. The girls, named Bubbles, Buttercup, and Blossom (after their signature colors by Utonium) were adopted by separate families.

Bubbles was taken in by a young mlm couple who wanted another child and sibling for their older daughter, Beatrix “bunny”. Blossom was adopted by a rather strict perfectionist couple who couldn’t have children of their own but loved the idea of raising a child to become something great. Buttercup was in the system for much longer, either running away or getting lost at the age of 5 and being found by a couple with three children. They loved and adopted her soon thereafter. 

It is by sheer luck that they all attend the same Junior High School (and in the same class at that). When their powers fully kick in on their twelfth birthday (days into the school year), they are rediscovered by Professor Utonium (as well as some less savory characters from their unknown past).

When Bunny goes missing, Bubble’s is sent on a vigilante path, coming across Utonium who tells her of her origins. She’s the one that finds and attempts to recruit her newfound sisters, to mixed reception.

Buttercup is ecstatic to be a superhero but Blossom declines, believing that her parents would kill her for putting herself in danger and throwing a wrench in her already incredibly busy schedule. She’s spent her whole life hiding what little powers she had (wearing tinted nonprescription glasses to hide her eyes and everything) and has no interest in parading around with them now. Little does she know she won’t have a choice for much longer.

There was another created much more successfully (though without the triplet telepathy): Bliss, who appears much older than the girls and is a local hero and celebrity. Her new mission is to hunt down her sisters in order to give them proper training to fulfill their purpose.

Powers:

The girls’ powers work differently to previous iterations.

1: They have always had some small amount of power (jumping higher and being just a little stronger than the average small child) but it kicks in fully when the girls turn 12

2: The girls can all fly, are exceptionally strong, fast, and durable, and can communicate telepathically (haha triplet telepathy). 

3: They can each form a colored energy that they channel through their respective weapons (Ex: Bubbles can blow bubbles of energy, Buttercup can surround her boxing gloves for a melee attack, and Blossom can shoot tennis ball-like projections that are smaller but faster than Bubbles’ but require more precision and concentration)

4: They are fueled by emotion, with their eyes turning their respective color when their powers are activated, fading to brown/ black when calm or suppressed.

Speaking of their weapons, each one was an ordinary object made into a conduit when their powers kicked in. Bubbles was doing an amateur bubble show in a park, entertaining a group of small children, Buttercup was practicing boxing with her brothers (she is the only one with family in the know because of this), and Blossom was playing tennis against her best friend Robin (who jumped over the net to catch her falling). 

Various Other Notes:

Their suits are plain, but I am fully convinced this is how Professor Utonium would design them. Don't worry, they'll spice them up later when they're a more fully formed team.

Bubbles would absolutely dress in Lolita whenever given the opportunity

Buttercup's younger brother is nicknamed 'Bullet'

Shichi is a combination of ‘Shiti’- city and ‘Ichi’- market/ town>> best equivalent I could come to for ‘Townsville’. If anyone that speaks Japanese has a better one, please let me know. Google was not my friend in this regard

I tried to find named for the girls in Japanese as well.... key word being 'tried'. I really want to keep their alliteration and tie them to their original names to keep them recognizable.

also can i just rant on color theory??? i tried eye-dropping from some official art and it’s all pink and bright blue???? i hate it. i hate CMYK. i would tear out my own eyes before abandoning the sheer amount of red i use in my art.

Marquis Fluff reference The Midnight Soirée chapter 1 to 5

It's Fluff's turn!

Kirby 1-2

A warning for spoilers for the Midnight Soirée. Please go read that first if you're interested in the story. Please enjoy

Colour Pallete:

All Fluff's colours are saturated, and compared to Kirby, who uses all colours - Fluff only uses the CMYK colour palette except the green for the leaves. (Cyan, magenta, yellow and key colour. The key colour is usually black or brown, with the latter fitting in here. And well, the cyan is more blue, but I ended up using it for Fluff's eyeshadow.) CMYK is known as print colours and are subtractive, which means the more colour you add, the darker it becomes. The opposite is RGB colours, which are additive colours. The more colour you add, the closer it becomes to white, with white being every colour. RGB is used in electronic displays like TVs, phones and computer screens, and eye cones are also RGB. Though very rarely, people are born with four cones rather than three. Animals like the mantis shrimp have sixteen colour receptors and can see in more colours than we do. 

Clothes:

From top to bottom: we have his wooden crown. In my extra trivia chapter from the Midnight Soirée, I explained how all fae royalty wear flower crowns when they marry and afterwards. But since Fluff is a bachelor, he does not wear a flower crown. So, he dons a crown of wood instead. A few small branches grow from it, resembling horns, as Fluff's true form has four horns. 

All the gems on his person are diamond-shaped. This is because the shape of a diamond represents perfection, which is also why I used the diamond pattern on his jacket. Although with the shading, the diamonds look like triangles, considered half or incomplete perfection. They also resemble cushions, which refers to Patchland being made from arts and crafts. 

The jacket of a concerto maestro with their long tailcoats inspired Fluff's overcoat. Fluff's coattails resemble broken clipped dragonfly wings; the top half is missing, and Fluff's pouldrons are very prince-like. Kirby never thought Fluff was a prince because his crown was humble compared to the royalty Kirby knew. Duke Dedede wears a singlet, which is normal for Dreamland Nobility. A passage in Chapter 1 explains this as crowns are passed down the aristocracy family tree from the head of the family to the next heir. 

Before designing the characters, I had already visualised the starlight tights, which fit well with Kirby's starry night cape. They resemble Lapiz Lazuli, which are some magnificent stones. They have these golden flecks in them and crushed are called Ultramarine, which is a very vibrant dark blue powder. It was believed that wearing lapis lazuli warded off bad spirits, and in Ancient Egypt, they crushed the stone to wear the powder as eyeshadow. 

Fluff's shoes are styled like flowers/vines that wrap around the foot and legs like boots but have the appearance of high heels. It is both elegant and intimidating. A fun detail is that they, from the front, resemble hooves from a bovine. Which is not the correct animal, but hell, why not? It is one of the few drafts I kept from the first sketch because it fits well.

Fluff's glamour is constructed out of many things. However, as a fae, Fluff has no hair shine as a human like Kirby does. Neither do Fae have eyelights. You can see it best in this close-up. The only light that reflects back is on Fluff's clothes or gems. This is why the only light is at the bottom of Fluff's hair, as it is a gradient. This is because the fae use an illusion to hide their true yet ever-changing eldritch forms. So Fluff's eyes and hair are fake, so his skin and really everything about him. It is all magic, which is why, throughout the night, he changes appearances so rapidly and why his expressions can go from warm to cold/deadly so quickly. He mimics human expressions and mannerisms while filling the rest with fae manners. The fae are an adaptive species that outwardly change like nature as nature, even if we don't see it, is constantly adapting for survival. 

As for why Fluff decided to adapt to his form - who knows? Partly, it is to resemble the portrait that hangs in the real world in the debilitated mansion's foyer.

All the features that have been added or changed are meant to lure Kirby in. Fae are said to tempt people with their magical beauty and, in some instances, transform to fit the human's preferences. In some myths, it is even said when someone casts their eyes on a fae they have already lost as they are that beautiful.

Fluff took something Kirby was familiar with and was already bewitched by. Or perhaps the portrait is magical of itself and was the first part of the curse. Who knows.

Chapter 3 & Beginning

Fluff with his hair done up and a few other things. Fluff looks more elegant/handsome with his pair-up. It might be because I've been staring at Fluff's reference model with his hair down, so putting up his hair is refreshing.

Fluff was sure at this point that he and Kirby would be together as husbands, so he felt more free to express himself and put more thought into his appearance. The diamond skin from Chapter 3 to Chapter 5 is not part of his makeup, as that was his glamour starting to slip. Luckily for him, it was something that could be considered beautiful. Although the lights can look creepy in the dark as they are essentially glowing freckles. The pointed ears are also from his glamour weakening but he does not feel ashamed to hide them since Kirby knows he is Fae. Fluff's first appearance was meant to attract and yet hide his true nature so here he is much more open. 

Also, diamond earrings = symbolise perfection. Fluff looks a lot more sheep-like with his nose. 

Midpoint Chapter 4 and 5

Here, Fluff is without his maestro jacket - seemingly vulnerable as he wanted to be left alone. Despite his obvious otherness, he seems more down to earth in his upset state. We also see his shirt and hands without his blue coat/gloves covering them, so that's neat. I had a lot of fun designing the ruffled shirt. I wanted to ensure it was not a stale design when I eventually disregarded the jacket for Fluff's angry/hurt role in those two chapters. 

Oh yeah, Fluff is pissed, alright. Well, he is more hurt, but he gets to be angry too. Even if he understood deep down, it was a misunderstanding. He was so close to one's goal, and finding someone who he could love and loves suddenly reject him stung. As did Kirby returning after they rejected him. Fluff did away with all the makeup and jewellery. Even his crown of wood/thorns is gone. His hair is messy, and his eyes and cheeks are covered in cracks. Yeah, Fluff does not care anymore how he is perceived in that moment. Still, he holds onto his glamour just a little longer for sentimentally. Because as hurt as he is, he did enjoy his time spent with Kirby. He also stopped glamouring his natural red peepers, and from this point, he never hides them behind the yellow lenses he conjured from the beginning of the night. They have horizontal pupils like sheep do. 

The pin in his bun is a button.

Kirbtober 2024 Companion Pieces - Week Three

Day 14: Miracle

About time we discuss the Hypernova ability in full detail.

In this AU, the Miracle Fruit is used more as a slight power booster. To other beings they grant a bump on all stats with no cosmetic changes (except glowing, colorful eyes), but to puffballs, oddly, that's a different story. This is why the Hypernova ability is indeed an ability, not a state - they change their appearance entirely when touching one.

Hypernova ability is no longer stuck to just "big ass inhale" because screw you, we can be a little creative than that. See those wisps-like things? They are called 'seeds' (I should've shown them as proper seeds but look I'm tired) and each of them creates a specific boost.

In fact, this ability's entire gimmick is boosting an aspect of themselves or allies. There are 4 aspects each user can amplify, albeit they can only amplify one at a time, depending on the seed color they pick:

Strength [magenta]

Sturdiness/Defense [blue]

Speed [yellow]

Personal Aspect (depends on user's bonded ability and the most mastered/favored technique of said user's bonded ability - pure puffballs who don't attune to any ability gets a huge inhale boost by default) [black]

Currently, at least for Kirby, he can only boost himself. He's not mastering it entirely yet, and it's not helped by the fact he doesn't attune himself permanently to it. Bonding with the ability can unlock neat things such as being able to boost two or more aspects at once at the cost of energy increase or being able to boost more than one person at a time.

And yes, the colors are a CMYK joke. Let me have this I learned graphic design.

Day 15: Cutscene Redraw

Learner grasping at straws to find an easy cutscene to draw moment. Seriously, had I have far more energy and time and persistent, I would've drawn the concept for Robobot Armor's activation scene but... *looks at how painful drawing this bastard is* No. Just. No.

Anyways, did you know that Kirby keeps the Rainbow Sword and some legendary final weapons inside the Fountain of Dreams. No, I will not explain further for now. Good luck guessing how and why.

Day 16: Overgrown

Another Hypernova ability-related picture? Anyways.

You may notice that Kirby here lacks a scarf. That's because the scarf was given to him 2 months before events of Planet Robobot, which happens a year after Triple Deluxe. Also, yes, that is a young Sectonia in her young royal dress. She was a decent princess actually, even when she made a second identity as Joronia so she can escape the castle and all...

It's just a shame that once she became queen and the mirror got involved, things got messy... and Kirby was, unfortunately, predestined to kill her. This too, was a long story.

Day 17: Galaxy

You know how Kirby has these starry-like eyes in Star Allies? Well, here in this AU it's… not something all puffballs have. In fact, most if not all puffballs have plain eyes. Either glowing or normal. Kirby's eyes ARE normal… but actually, whenever he feels happy, content, or just really high, good emotions in general, the blue part of his eyes has this whole galaxy/star look to it.

Apparently, this is also a trait that a certain lost legendary family has - apparently, their family were given these eyes, heriditary since birth, as a 'blessing' from the stars themselves for charting them as they were once astronomers. So maybe they are connected? Or is that family not the only one? There are seriously a lot of mystery about those…

Day 18: Mirror

Rare gijinka entry, this time, because I am paying my dues for @somethinginworl's gikabi server. You may remember Seikyo - yes, that is their name - from a past story... yeah, that's the gijinka being featured here. Due to some weird Mirror World rules (and the fact that Seikyo is, well, created not by the mirror specifically, it's by Shadow Kirby), you can consider them a weird outlier... or a mirror of the rest of Team Starstruck that isn't Kirby. Weird how there is no mirror of those two, eh?

The actual gijinka design doesn't look like this, they just... dressed, for the occasion. Don't worry about it!

Day 19: AU/Parallel

Not really something lore intensive or anything but... this is just a really fun bonus. I try to find mutuals who I remember to have Kirby AUs, and then draw their Kirbies just hanging out here, carrying their fav drinks and eating a full pan of strawberry shortcake which they demolished by the time this pic is captured. Madmans.

Warning for animal death mention;

We had to very suddenly say goodbye to one of our dogs a few days ago, who had a bleed on his heart that was most likely caused by a tumour, and untreatable. While me and the family are doing okay (emotionally and financially), the whole process has racked up a several thousand dollar bill and it’s still quite a hit, especially with the holiday season coming into full swing. Again, we’re not in dire need of money, but I’d still like to contribute and also have something to keep myself occupied.

How would Miles' powers for the NSpidRAU work though? Does he drain colors from one spot, then give it to another?

I was thinking he could just make literal paint out of nothing as long as he has energy, kinda like how Yinu can make musical notes out of thin air.

I do like the idea that Mile's powers are kinda like this special pen I saw a while ago (I don't know if it was actually real), but you could place it on a color and it would copy that color exactly and then you could draw. Pretty sure it was a digital pen but now that I say it out loud I think I got pranked by an edited video lol.

But I do like that idea that Miles needs to touch a specific color in order to use it, or at least be near a color (so if he's by a red wall he can use red, or if he's around grass he can use green). I don't think his powers would need to drain colors, but it could be something similar where he needs to hold onto a color and store it so he can use it but it doesn't literally drain the color of whatever he is "draining."

I feel like a lot of people would see his powers and initially think they are illusion powers (especially with Eve's popularity). However, Miles' powers are real and physically alter the world without being illusions. Eve can change the color of something but it will go back to normal when her powers are not longer active. Miles can change the color and it will stay like that forever.

Eve and Pav can change the way reality looks without having to put effort into making it look real because all they have to do is warp it. Miles on the other hand, if he wanted to do something like that, he would have to just be an insanely good artist, otherwise if he tries to use his powers it is just his style of artwork (I like to think of this like those Looney Tunes skits where Wile E Coyote would paint a fake tunnel and Roadrunner would run through it but Coyote would hit the wall. Eve's illusions could literally make that tunnel appear, Pav's would make it look extremely realistic but you might hit a wall if he isn't putting all his effort into it, Miles' would absolutely be a wall just painted really well/realistically).

There's probably some other stuff you can do with Miles' powers. Like he would never need a pencil or pen, just like a stick or even his fingers to write on a piece of paper. He could make different forms of paint and colors, from spray paint to gauche to oils. He probably has some light based powers that connect with his colors and electricity, meaning he could make light out of nothing and then change the color of that light or something.

If you saw my artwork for Neon J's parents, I kinda think Miles' powers would be like. Neon's father can make balls of light in his palm while his wife (Neon's mother) can make pictures of light in the air. Miles has powers similar to this but they are more based in just like standard colors than light based colors. I know that doesn't make sense but to me it does. It's like the difference between RGB and CMYK. One is for print and one is for screens. Neon's family with the light powers they possess would be better off with screens for their art/powers while Miles is better off in person with his art/powers.

I don't know if my rambling made sense, but this is how I would see Miles' powers working. Also like to think, depending on the form that he is placing colors (which doesn't have to be in paint form, it can just be in pure color) then water could be a real enemy for his color powers but that would also be a boost for his electricity powers.

Last Song: I Don't Like Myself by Imagine Dragons Last Show: The Amazing Race season 9 with my family! Currently Watching: I'm on a Food Network kick and rewatching all the shows I loved when I was younger so I just started Worst Cooks in America season 23 (at least I think it was season 23...) Currently Reading: I'm not reading an actual book right now (which I should be but alas) but I'm still working through Somnium by Rebouks and I don't want it to end so I've been reading really slow. Going to probably immediately start it over when I finally finish lol 😭 Current Obsession: I'm on an insane music kick right now because it seems like everyone's putting out new albums (yay!! 🥳) so I've had them on repeat. I think the one's I've listened to the most are CMYK by Circus P and It's All True by MALINDA, like nonstop.
