I like reminding myself of this quote from hpatootp:

“Like the person Sirius cared the most about in the world was you," said Dumbledore quietly.

And this quote from the film (it’s actually Dumbledore in the book) I think fits really well for Sirius:

Harry: And what if after everything I've been through, something's gone wrong inside me. What if I'm becoming bad?

Sirius: I want you to listen to me very carefully, Harry. You're not a bad person. You're a very good person, who bad things have happened to. You understand?

This part really hits hard.

Because it’s heartbreaking hearing Harry think so badly of himself and have such self-doubt. And because Sirius shows what a fantastic godfather he is and how much he truly loves Harry.

And because surely he’s thinking of another lost teenager who bad things happened to.

And a grey-haired elderly wizard with dark skin who said the same words to him many years ago after he ran away from home.

Kudos to The First Omen for being so good I went from “ugh they’re doing a prequel to the first Omen film 🙄” to “i’m gonna need about five more sequels with the characters/stories from this prequel 🤩.”

#the first omen #the first omen spoilers #i’ll admit to being intrigued by the haunting and unique trailer #but was still skeptical until i saw the damn thing #and now i’m kind of obsessed ngl #especially the ending left open for more stories #sometimes a family is: the mother of the antichrist #two girls that are also unholy abominations #and the excommunicated exposition priest that won’t leave them alone #i can appreciate some people being frustrated that the movie ends with a reminder that it’s a *PREQUEL* film #but as someone who has affection for horror sequels and believes there can be some damn good ones #i am ok with more- especially more in the vein of this film #horror #horror film

#soapbox #it's not a pragmatic career choice. i cannot afford to be in school until i'm 30. and so forth. academia is a bad career path. and so forth #but like i'm not gonna lie i come from a family of academics and i feel that in some way that's my destiny #my sister is clearly following in my dad's footsteps and is going to be an artist (she's a film student)#so i guess that leaves me to do what everyone else in the family did and be an insufferable humanities graduate. sigh

I didn’t realise until I went to the cinema that some parents seem to think Barbie is a film for children.

It isn’t.

It’s not that it’s inappropriate, but it’s just not made for the attention span or minds of children. For example, would you expect a seven year old to sit through, let’s say, Pride and Prejudice, pay attention the whole time and understand everything that’s going on? No? Well, the stereotypical P&P target audience is the same as Barbie’s. Don’t go into the film expecting your young child to have an amazing time when the film was not made for them.

#I was sat behind a family with two young girls and I didn’t hear them laugh once #I then saw multiple families leave seemingly unhappy at the end #I get how people could mistake it to be a kids film #it has bright colours and is about a toy #but it isn’t #and yes maybe pride and prejudice wasn’t the best example because language used would probably be a barrier for kids in that case #but I had to for the reference #Barbie

I really vibed with the imagery of the film #and the lead #but there’s just something not sitting right with me lmao #I think it’s because the satanism is SO on the nose it’s actually comical at the end #and it’s played #completely straight that the gender no conforming person is using Satan to come into good family homes #and destroying those families lmao #like what. else am I supposed to take away from the film other than that #at least the exorcist tries to leave things slightly ambiguous despite the whole narrative being (Christian) Good vs Evil #which is essentially also what this movie boils down to #all the imagery and cinematography amounts to nothing thematically #and it’s just a bit of a let down

I get that “the family that moves into the haunted house doesn’t trust each other enough to believe each other when one of them starts saying shit is haunted” is one of those genre tropes that’s like, it needs to be that way to make the story go, but I think you could do an interesting subversion/genre bait-and-switch by making a couple that pretty early on goes “no, okay, it doesn’t matter if you’re hallucinating or if the basement really did try to eat you, the person I love doesn’t feel safe so we’re getting the fuck out”. Idk it’s just really rare to see romantic relationships survive horror films and I think you could do something fun with it.

#I am still thinking about burnt offerings after it wrecked my shit last weekend #and like the context of that film is that all those people hated each other’s guts both in the story and irl lmao #so it would never apply there #but it got me thinking bc #‘would you leave for me? even if it was all just in my head?’#has the potential for incredible romance between characters for whom the answer is an unequivocal YES #I was ALSO thinking about that film #in the context of like. it Seemed Important that it was a nuclear family with a kid #so what happens to that story if the impetus is really #we’re renting this house out in the middle of nowhere in the country #so that when we quietly invite my husband’s FRIEND Dave to come join us #no one needs to know or be asking awkward questions about why Dave is spending the whole summer with us #this is partially me being like. mmm.#I think if I thought about it more you could Say Something Interesting #about the fragility of nuclear families and how the individualist mindset behind them #cuts you off from perspective and support #with this kind of story structure #and partially me being like #I think it would be funny if the house that eats you is defeated bc it doesn’t know what gay people are #just bamboozled. why is there another guy here. get rid of him. why isn’t he leaving #ALSO to be clear #in this scenario the wife is a beard #but that DOESN’T mean she’s expendable #it means she is these two men’s single most trusted friend and confidante #and that they are gonna fight tooth and nail not to let a house eat her #the house trying to sow distrust by manufacturing a scenario where it looks like the wife is cheating: WHY ISN’T THIS WORKING

I hate that I hate doing things in my own dude but it's so fucking boring !!!

#i dont go out to eat and i dont go to the movie theater so like the two biggest Default Hang activities are completely non-options for me #i dont like seeing movies in theatre 1) the local one sucks and 2) i cant sit still for over a half hour in a chair that makes me want to #become an arsonist.#ive been to Fancy Good Fun movie theatres and seen Incredible Higjly Rated films and still been like #20 mins in. is it going to be over soon? can i leave? please?#i like going to the library and shopping and walking down by the river and in the woods #but i also Dont Like The Beach because sand makes me want to become a fucking terrorist and the water safety index thing #sent me on a spiral sooo bad ♡ also im too body conscious to enjoy myself #the public pools okay excepts its expensive and over crowded 100% of the time #rock beachs are good i like swimming i just eugh #i also. dont like going to the gyms indoor pool.#its so fucking echoy in there i get a migraine thinking about it #i do like their sauna tho but. again. priced out of that experience! wahoo! also the stairs there are designed to torture me #i like eating outside i like picnics in theory i just cant get comfortable sitting in like 98% of places for more than like 30 mins.#at some point some part of my body is going to start hurting so bad i want to throw up.#i like playing video games and board games but i dont have any consoles or board games so like.#man. idk!#i hate doing things alone bcus i Was Alone for 3 years with my only social contact being my abusive family #i would speak to them maybe 3 times a month and get out of the house maybe 2 times and #idk! idk its just like! okay! im done being socialy isolated!!!#>every activity that you can do to hang out with people is unappealing to me or causes me physical damage #😭 okay nvm!!!
