“We’re glad you came home from college for spring break, Kyle! We love you, and love having you around. But I promised you the belt for not keeping your grades up! And there’s not a snow ball’s chance in hell that I won’t make you take your pants down, son! That wishful thinking just cost you some extras.”

These hot August days have brought back a lot of memories of when I lived back in Appalachia. Many good memories, some memories of things not so good back when they happened but that have special memories now.
I remember the works and sounds dreaded when I was going to get the belt. The old man would start calling me "Mr. Buddy" for some reason and then if things were really going south, I'd be told to "Get in the living room or smoke-house and get 'em off) and stand there with nothing on waiting for him to come in. Then a "bend over and grab 'em) and the sound of his belt coming off, the buckle rattling and the sound of him folding it in half. A second or two later the sound of that things cutting through the air and landing on bare skin soon following by a stinging burning pain that built with each impact. That was usually followed by many more of the same at high speed in high impact. Soon the main sound was me sobbing, apologizing, and more or less blubbering.
I am not sure what lessons I learned from all that except a belt on the butt hurt like hell and that I had to be more careful and not get caught the next time. Still, I did repent of some things partially due to those whippings. One was smoking. So for me, it wasn't all bad. Now it is just a memory that younger folks for better or worse won't have.

“Please stop crying, baby! I feel so bad! I wish I could’ve been here to stop him. Your father doesn’t like me very much anyway. Did he use that big leather belt you showed me? How many did he give you? Did he make you take your pants down? Can I see? No? Will you let me touch your butt? Jesus! It’s still hot! Are you hard now too, babe? This is really turning me on! Oh, I’m sorry! I’m being rude. Can I kiss it and make it all better for you?”

Imagine Jason coming back to the manor for the first time after the *all of it*, and Alfred just lays into him about how disappointed he is in him, and Jason is expecting a talk about love and family only to get the mother of all firearm safety lectures.

Laura: I've decided that I'm going to simply ignore the old people drama from now on.
Logan: What old people drama?
Laura, gesturing vaguely at her dads: Whatever it is that you two do all day!
Wade: Whoa! Hold on, child. This is unacceptable behaviour. Whose turn is it to lecture her about morals and values and being respectful, Logan?
Logan, already busying himself with a book: Yours.

Love and Boundaries

Aventurine stood near the doorway of the living room, his eyes carefully following the scene unfolding before him. The soft hum of the evening air mingled with the occasional scolding tone of your voice as you gently but firmly reprimanded your child.
“You know better than this, sweetheart,” you said, keeping your tone calm but serious. “You can’t just go around breaking things because you're angry.”
The child, their small face scrunched up in frustration, crossed their arms tightly over their chest. Their eyes flickered with defiance before they muttered, “I hate you! I don’t care about your stupid rules!”
Aventurine’s lips pressed into a thin line, his mind whirring through the possibilities of how to handle the situation. He could see the irritation and hurt in your expression, a look that immediately triggered a protective instinct inside him.
The child, in a fit of anger, stepped toward you, fists clenched, eyes burning with rebellious fire. Without warning, they swung their hand toward you, aiming to hit you in an outburst of frustration.
Your heart dropped at the sudden move, but before the impact could land, Aventurine was there, his presence a calming yet assertive force in the room.
“Enough.” he said, his voice low but commanding. His figure seemed to fill the doorway as he approached, his demeanor far more imposing than it had been just moments ago. His hand reached out, gently grasping the child’s wrist mid-swing, halting them in their tracks.
“You do not lay a hand on them,” Aventurine continued, his gaze unwavering, now focused solely on his child. His voice was sharper, colder, but still held that underlying warmth that only you could recognize. “That may be your parent, but that is my spouse, and you will not be disrespecting them like that.”
The child’s eyes widened in shock, their defiance crumbling at the sternness in their father’s voice. Aventurine’s eyes flickered with a mix of concern and disappointment, yet his love for you shone clearly through his words.
“You need to learn respect,” he said, kneeling down to meet the child’s eye level, his hand still holding their wrist. “This kind of behavior is not acceptable, not in this house, and certainly not toward your other parent.”
You stood quietly, your heart swelling with love and relief. Aventurine had always been able to maintain control, but his fierceness in protecting you, in teaching their child to respect boundaries, made you feel seen, cherished.
The child slowly lowered their gaze, their anger subsiding, replaced by a quiet sadness.
“I’m sorry
” they muttered, their voice barely above a whisper. “I didn’t mean it.”
Aventurine released their wrist, placing a gentle hand on their shoulder. “I know you didn’t mean it,” he said softly, his tone shifting to one of understanding. “But you need to understand that actions have consequences. Words have weight. We don’t lash out at people we love.”
The room fell into a brief silence, the tension easing as Aventurine’s words sank in. He turned to you, a soft smile creeping onto his lips, the playful gleam in his eyes returning.
“You’re okay?” he asked, concern lacing his voice as he reached out to cup your cheek with one hand.
You nodded, your heart warming from his unwavering support. “I’m fine. Thank you, Aventurine.”
His smile deepened, his eyes softening. “You know I would do anything for you, right?”
“Yeah, I know.”
With a soft laugh, he wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into a tender embrace. His child, now standing a little further away, seemed to be processing what had just happened. Aventurine’s hand gently rested on your back, a symbol of the unity that kept you all together, no matter how complicated things got.
In that quiet moment, you realized that, despite the challenges of raising a child together, there was no greater feeling than having a partner who would always stand by you—someone who loved you and your family, and who would protect you from anything that tried to tear you apart.

“The aftermath was brutal - not from his boyfriend’s thick rod, but from his father’s heavy belt! David ran a fine line in his late teens, one that his dad had to occasionally pull him back from. After a day or two in the house, all would be forgotten. And his boyfriend would be there to kiss it all better.”

There's speculation that Floatshimmer's kits are Graysky's, since one of the kits are silver like him, you know, the dude that was made a warrior when she was a kit.
To be fair, Graysky is ridiculously young as well. He might have been described as being ready to be a warrior at the start of ASC, but he was born in Lost Stars and is only a little over a year old at the end of the last arc.
EVERYONE got hit with the Time Travel Beam... in fact. Funfact: RiverClan actually has always had a weird issue with their allegiance cats aging really fast.
Anyway, digressing. If it does pan out to have Graysky as the father...
Eventually I like the idea of Floatshimmer and Graysky being a couple (their names make me think of bright sunshine on a cloudy day, making the waves of the lake twinkle with light), but absolutely not while they're so young. Both of them need at least another year or so.
(At the earliest, have their kits mid-arc, ideally later.)
That said, I'm still willing to shuffle them both a bit to be closer in age. I'm growing interested in the idea that they're like, the cat equivalent of 18 and 19-ish. Young, dumb, impulsive, ended up with kittens looong before they were ready and it's impacting their relationship negatively.
Still deciding, though.

Soap hc for your consideration:
When Soap has anxious or just angry energy that he doesn't know what to do with (and he doesn't feel like training it out) he'll hyperfocus on deep cleaning whatever space he can for hours. He's hardly aware of time passing as he's doing it too, he just stops when he feels all the energy fade away or become a more manageable level
some people joke that that’s how he got his callsign even though the name soap came well before anyone noticed his habit, but he doesn’t really mind.
because all that matters is that cleaning to him is calming; the repetitive motions, the smells, the instant gratification of stepping back from his work and seeing a notable difference in cleanliness. what matters is that even as much time as it may take, it’s draining in a good way and, in the end, the effort can be appreciated.
the 141 notices the habit when the common room is suddenly cleaner than it’s ever been—even the grout is white after years of being an ugly brownish-grey—and they find soap in the middle of it all, scrubbing at a particularly stubborn stain on the kitchenette counter.
after that, price, gaz, and ghost all chip in to buy supplies for soap on occasion, because it can get expensive, and they have to show they’re thankful anyhow. they don’t comment on the habit otherwise, and that’s just how things go.

Magolor: Trying to catch up on stuff you missed? Well, yaoi is a thing now. Along with uhh
Lor: What’s that?
Magolor: did not think she would ask a question that fast It’s. A genre centering around romance between men..?
Lor:
Lor: Do you actually think being gay is a modern invention? Do you think homosexuality hasn’t existed as long as love itself? That two men or two women never once felt happy just to be with each other until some arbitrary time after I was put away?
Magolor:
Sometimes there is only one bed
Lor: Magolor.
“>Do you think gay people are a modern invention?” Is definitely a sentence in my brain now.

I've always found Alexander Saburov interesting, especially P1 Rubin's take on him where he tells how Alexander in incognito saved people from burning house and went unrecognized for the deed (nor flaunted it). Wonderful and easy to miss characterization.
YES saburov's fucked up sense of performing duty by putting himself at risk... my favorite... have had thoughts brewing in response to this that aren't quite cooked enough yet but it's very much a gendered standard that he holds himself to IMO, of idealized masculinity as a responsibility. as an active role and as the way things must be done. making the choices that he thinks need to be made regardless of how bad they are for him. pairing beautifully with katerina's self-destructive attempts to conform to the extremely feminine-gendered role of mistress, pairing wonderfully with the two of them's catastrophic attempt to conform to the heteropatriarchal nuclear family archetype by adopting the changeling :^) and especially how this is a function of how saburov relates to his Job, a role that's been passed down in his family and Actually Is critical to the function of the Town, inescapably so as long as the system of rulers exists

I am once again asking people to stop assigning family roles to found family. It beats the point of having a found family in the first place
Also: "this character is a mom friend" ≠ "this character is the mom of the group"
One implies the friend is naturally caring, nurturing and thoughtful. While the other implies there's an assigned person in the group who gets emotionally burdened by people of their same age range to act like their mom

Spider is having fun at a sleepover party with the Sully's kids. Kiri brings up the topic to rant their parent, such as Neytiri and Jake having some nearly autistic habits. Spider speaks when they laugh it off, "my dad is pretty strict and weird, too. Once I--" Neteyam, Loak and Kiri's jaw almost drops to the floor from all the details of Quaritch's discipline on Spider. having expected some harmless, strange and funny stuff.
Spider is very confused by their reaction--they look at each other silently with eyes widened, mouth slightly gapped.
"You guys are no fun." He mutters, staring at his feet as if these Sully's kids subtly set the rules that they are the only ones who get to roast their parents at this party.

Heya, ask game attendee here! (This is Johnny, btw!)
For Hazel and Emmanelain, I'd like to ask: What are their relationships with each others' families like?
For Hazel and Zero: When did they first say "I love you"? What was the situation?
Hi Johnny!!!
Answers will be below the read more, since they got kinda long
like REALLY long
Ship Questions (Still Open!!) ----------
Tumblr media
Hazel had a...rocky beginning with the other members of the Fortemps family, Honoroit being the exception in Emmanellain's life as he was the first one to notice and push the two of them to admit their feelings for one another. Hazel especially had a rough start with Edmont de Fortemps, specifically. Similar to Emm, she grew up with a strict father with exacting expectations for her. First impressions of the man, drawn from stories Emmanellain would tell her (usually venting and complaining about something or other) did not paint the best picture. So when meeting the Count for the first time, Hazel was on guard and ready to jump to Emm's defense at any point.
It wasn't Edmont having high expectations for his sons that bothered Hazel, it was his attitude when Emmanellain failed that she took issue with. Baato, her own father, for sure became frustrated with her when she didn't meet his standards for her, but afterwards he made sure to guide her back to the path she needed to walk. It was tough love yes, but at its core it was fair. In contrast, Emmanellain was simply told to "be better" with little to no further guidance on how to properly be better. "Be more like your brothers" was what he was told many times. as if it was as simple as flipping a switch. Not to mention the story of Edmont striking Emmanellain as punishment made her blood boil, even if his mistake in that moment was severe. She was no stranger to receiving bruises or the uncommon cut from her father in training, but never as a form of punishment.
It was clear after meeting him though that Edmont was a changed man from the stories Emmanellain told, the ones from before the end of the Dragonsong War. Over the course of getting to know him more and more Hazel has since come around to the Fortemps family Count, even if she still harbors a small grudge against him for his previous treatments of Emmanellain. In a similar vein, Edmont didn't particularly seem to care much about Hazel before meeting her. As the second born and not the heir to the family as long as his partner did not harm the reputation of the Fortemps then it didn't matter to Edmont all that much who Emmanellain chose to love. Over time though he became grateful for her presence and the affect she had on Emm's growth as a person and a knight. Now he can say he is proud of who Emmanellain has chosen, and he truly means it.
Her relationship with Artoirel, on the other hand, was a much more smooth start. There was an initial hiccup when Artoirel began criticizing Emmanellain for "naively calling the first maiden who did not seem disgusted to hold a conversation with you your romantic partner" but Hazel quickly and loudly shut that misconception down. On the surface Artoirel didn't seem to mind much after that, until he pulled Hazel aside for a private conversation. There he practically threatened the woman that if she toyed with his brother's heart or hurt him in any way, that he would hunt her down no matter how long it took and exact just punishment. The threat didn't seem to have the desired effect as Hazel from then on had a strange sense of respect for Artoirel, knowing how deeply he does care for his family even if it doesn't always make it to the surface of his character. Likewise Artoirel has mutual respect for Hazel due to her impact on Emmanellain, happy to finally see his brother spread his wings and grow.

Up until their trip to the Azim Steppe, all Hazel’s parents knew of Emmanellain were from the letters Hazel would write to them. So upon meeting him for the first time they were
underwhelmed. Still, Janis came around to the young man rather quickly. Emmanellain likewise only knew the two from stories Hazel would tell of her time back home, and thankfully Janis felt almost exactly as how Hazel described her.
Being in her presence was calming, almost to the point of being unnerved by the stillness and quiet. A silent sense of judgement followed every glance towards Emmanellain. Nevertheless Emm gave his utmost to present and carry himself as any self respecting member of a noble house should, not once making any comment about the disparity between living conditions of his family’s Ishgard estate and the Steppe yurt he found himself in for over a week.
By about halfway into the trip, Janis admits to Hazel that while she had some doubts at first she sees how happy Emmanellain makes her. He brings out the same smile from her daughter that Janis would often see during their late night novel readings from when Hazel was growing up. She remarks a comment Hazel made as a child about finding her own princess like in her favorite book, joking around if Hazel would settle for a prince instead.
Emmanellain knew Hazel's parents would be intense, but nothing truly prepared him for just how intense her father would be. He thought he was prepared: A respected and strong hunter of a nomadic warrior people and Emm was the one taking his only child, his only daughter's hand. You could've cut the tension upon his first meeting with Baato with a knife. As quickly as the first handshake Emmanellain knew exactly how this was gonna go, once he felt the bones in his hand crack from the Auri man's death grip.
Much of Emmanellain’s time spent in the Steppe on this trip was spent either sparring or hunting with Baato. Emm never came close to beating Hazel’s father in a fight the entire trip, which Emm himself would be the first to admit he saw coming. He also never caught anything on his hunting excursions with Baato, also to be expected according to the Elezen. During the entire trip Emmanellain could not for the life of him get a read on what Hazel’s father was thinking, let alone what he thought of him
until he told him on the last day of their trip to the Azim Steppe.
Baato told Emmanellain that he was very unhappy with the warrior his daughter chose. He said Emmanellain was sloppy in technique and skill, physically weak and lacking in fortitude. Nothing Emmanellain had never heard before, but to hear it so bluntly was somewhat of a new experience for him. But, Baato continued, in terms of the person Hazel had chosen he could accept. Emmanellain was determined to prove himself, never backed down from any of Baato’s challenges, and most of all he saw how Hazel’s eyes shone like the sun itself when she lays eyes on Emmanellain. And her happiness trumps his disapproval of Emm’s capabilities as a fighter.

The first one to admit their feelings was Zero, as detailed here. But the first one to say the actual words "I love you" was in fact Hazel herself. It wasn’t long after the previously linked scenario, in fact. The two finished their meals in relative silence, stealing glances back and forth of one another.
Eventually it came that they could no longer hide behind their empty bowls, leaving the restaurant and moving back into the streets of Radz-at-Han. The two of them wandered almost aimlessly around the city, the quiet between them broken up intermittently by the odd question here and there.
They threw inquiries back and forth to one another, such as “how long have you known?” and “why wait until now to say anything?” and more. Hazel’s heart was racing a malm a minute, and color had steadily found its place on the pale Voidsent’s face by this point. Eventually the two come to a stop at Zero’s favorite place in the city: the airship landing dock.
The best view to see the stars at night, and tonight there was nary a cloud in sight to block the majesty of the shining dots above. It hurt Hazel to ask, but she had to go forward with one more question to Zero. “Are you
sure that what you’re feeling is love?” It was a dagger to her own heart to ask that question, but Hazel felt she had to ask it. For her own sake, to not truly get her hopes up just yet.
Zero takes a moment to respond. “It’s something I know I do not feel for any other individual in my life currently. It’s not dissimilar to that of friendship
but there’s something more to it.” The Voidsent takes a step forward. “A hunger, but not of aether. A hunger, a desire
simply to be close to you.” She moves her hand to her brow.
The Voidsent was once more attempting to use her hat as a shield, not remembering she was not wearing it that evening. She quickly adjusts and moves to brush her hair behind her ear. “If this is not love, then I know not what it could be.” She raises her eyes to meet Hazel’s, a small smile forming on her face.
Hazel quickly reaches out, grabbing Zero by the shoulder and just under her chin. The Voidsent’s eyes shoot open over the sudden movement and takes hold of Hazel’s arm. Their gazes meet, Zero just now seeing the Auri woman’s eyes begin to water over. Hazel’s lip begins to tremble as she breaks out into a deep smile. “I love you, Zero
I love you.” She admits, the pain in her chest subsiding as she lets go of the breath she was holding in.
“
I love you as well, Hazel.” Zero quietly responds, unconsciously pulling away from Hazel’s hands. Unfortunately it’s not quick enough as Hazel tries to pull the Voidsent in for a kiss. Zero feels her pulse quicken, fight or flight kicking in as she pushes Hazel away from her, the Au Ra stumbling into some boxes. The Voidsent takes a moment to steady her breath. “I
I’m sorry. I just
I simply-”
“No, it’s fine
I was moving too fast. I’m the one that should be apologizing.” Hazel cuts her off, sadness evident in her tone but a sheepish smile on her face. “Let’s just head back for the night, alright?” Hazel asks, but begins walking back towards the city without waiting for an answer. Zero looks on as guilt begins to form in her chest, but the Warrior of Light refused to meet her gaze.
