An excerpt from a fic ill never write

Fandom: Fallen Hero: Rebirth

Pairing: Julia Ortega/Cynthia Basri--Chargestep

The name sits on the edge of Ortega’s lips, but she hesitates. Once she speaks the illusion will break and she’ll just be standing in a crappy diner staring down some poor woman trying to enjoy a cigarette and some coffee. The scar on her left cheek will just be a trick of the light and not the one left behind from the exploding car that had trapped Cynthia all those years ago. The day Ortega has kissed her for the first time oblivious to the blood dripping onto her hand or the wreckage burning around them. Until she speaks the illusion can continue, but Ortega has always been a woman of action.

“Cynthia? Is that really you” She asks knowing it is idiotic to hope, but Ortega has always been an idiot when it came to Cynthia.

Surprise crosses the other woman’s face and her dark eyes rise up from the table top. Ortega’s breath catches at the spark of recognition in their depths.

The illusion doesn’t break.

You're limping along parallel to the highway.The sun's finally disappearing beneath the horizon, staining the line where the desert meets the sky bottle green and overhead a deep blue. You look up and-

Oh god, stars. You hadn't even realized you missed stars. How long has it been? There's so many more of them than you remember.

You're startled out of your reverie by yellow light sweeping away the shades of grey around you. Headlights? It hurts to reach out, like stretching an over-used muscle, but you brush fingers against their mind. She's headed towards the next town and it's miles away. Almost impossible for you on foot when you're already exhausted. But for her sturdy old truck?

It's not too difficult to tighten you grip a little, urge her to pull over to a stop next to you on the shoulder. She's a kind soul. But the ache behind your eyes tells you not to hold it too long.

"Not much to see out here," she calls out as the window crawls downwards.

"You're telling me," the forced chuckle sounds awful. Like you're years out of practice. You shift your grip on her just a little, debating how much you want to let her see.The decision gets made when she wonders what you're doing out here. It doesn't take much to tuck those questions behind thoughts of how awful you look, swaying in your struggle to stay upright.

"...You need a ride into town?"

"That would be awesome, actually."

The next thing you're really aware of is the feeling of cool glass against your forehead as you gaze up, head tilted against the passenger side window to try and keep the stars in sight from your seat. Later you'll sort this out, wipe your face from her mind and replace it with something unremarkable. For now though, you think you might rest your eyes for just a second.
