From @vince_junior - Can I share a little of my story? I came to #FAMU #Fall2011. Excelled,got active ,joined orgs,always on the scene etc etc. April 21st 2013- my big sister Shayln passed away. Went thru more obstacles that summer and by September 2013 I was hospitalized for over exhaustion. That semester I drank heavily and started findin Myself alone at home alot, stuck in my head. Started spending whole days sitting in the bed doing nothing.After an evaluation in January 2014 I was diagnosed clinically depressed.Never told anyone cuz as a Black man, we were never taught HOW to tell anyone. March 30,2014 I had my first severe anxiety breakdown. Was diagnosed with Severe Panic Disorder. This is not a typical panic or anxiety attack, during an episode my fight or flight ignites and my body reacts as if I am in total danger. At the time of diagnosis I could not sit in front of more than 4 people(no matter who) without an attack. I did not return to school that semester. Lost my full academic scholarship,my friends, my "status",everything.......But God. I began therapy at sunshine manor(free service for FAMU students). I procured an internship with @streetz945atl. After moving away I built my confidence back. Joined Orange Room Radio. Seriously pursued acting,took classes, got No after No at auditions,being broke lol etc. Came back to Tally summer 2015?? The anxiety came back. Nearly failed two semesters(always in the last few weeks) because the episodes would get so bad. Told myself I wouldn't end 2018 at anybody's school whether I had a degree or not......BUT GOD. Dad got diagnosed with cancer this time last year, so I went vegan. Began yoga and meditation daily. Began sitting in nature. reconnected to the innocent brilliance we all have as children. A wise professor(Benjamin A. Davis) told me "once a man, twice a child". I became a child again, and today let's me know that I have crossed the threshold to manhood. But God! Believing we have all the technology we’ll ever need, we seek to draw attention to its destructive side effects. This seems foolish now that we find ourselves saddled with technologies like Japan’s ramshackle 1960’s-vintage reactors at Fukushima when we have the possibility of clean nuclear fusion on the horizon. The imperative to develop new technologies and implement them on a heroic scale no longer seems like the childish preoccupation of a few nerds with slide rules. It’s the only way for the human race to escape from its current predicaments. Too bad we’ve forgotten how to do it.

This is definitely an interesting read, if a long one, and makes several good points. I especially like the sort of indirect call to action at the end of the quote above; we have to be more creative (or innovative!) if we went to keep going as a species. This creativity doesn’t just extend to innovation, though--it’s also important to be creative with what we have. I’m a big fan of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, and creativity plays a huge part in these. The more creative we get with the ways we reduce waste, reuse objects, and recycle things for new uses, the better. Make a vertical garden with cans or jars suspended from a wooden pallet. Buy sweaters from thrift stores and rip them to reuse the yarn. Use empty jam/relish/pickle/nut butter/etc. jars as glasses. The possibilities are endless; we just have to create them.

I created a collection for LA Fashion Week that was held at Ace Gallery in 2011. All the models cried beautiful tears for me. The tears I could not cry for myself during the year my father abducted my brother and I. The collection was called From Water To Ice by Anh Volcek. Since then, I have taken my grandmother’s name Vu. I feel her watching over me and watching me grow into being human again.
