Animal of the Day!
Falkland Islands Wolf (Dusicyon australis)
Tumblr media
Extinction Date- 1876
Habitat- Falkland Islands
Size (Weight/Length)- 1.6 m
Diet- Birds; Insects; Carrion
Cool Facts- The Falkland Islands wolf was the only native land mammal of the Falkland Islands off the southernmost tip of Argentina. These wolves were the first canine to go extinct in modern times. They excelled in hunting nesting birds and seals and may have scavenged washed up whale carcasses. When Charles Darwin visited the Islands, he predicted that the wolves would soon go extinct due to human interaction. The wolves were rapidly hunted for their furs and out of fear of them killing livestock, resulting in the last Falkland Islands wolf being killed in 1876. The closest living relative to these wolves are the maned wolves of mainland South America. Maned Wolves are near threatened due to habitat destruction but luckily conservation efforts in breeding, habitat protection, and the education of locals is keeping their population relatively steady.
Rating- 12/10 (Canis antarcticus is no longer used as a scientific name but man that taxidermy does the wolf dirty.)

The fossilized skull of a Falkland Islands wolf, a rare find given the islands’ often acidic soil, which makes preservation difficult. Found on the grounds of Spring Point Farm on West Falkland, the skull is now on display at the Falkland Islands Museum and National Trust, East Falkland. [ x ]

Cryptid of the Day: Falkland Island Wolf
Description: The Warrah, or the Falkland Island Wolf, & sometimes incorrectly called the Antarctic Wolf, went extinct in the 1880s, though soldiers stationed during the Falkland War claimed to have seen it. Cryptozoologist Dale A. Drinnon suggested they were insular Andean Wolf population

Britain truly one of the worst things to happen to the world, even moreso than the dutch, maybe not quite on par with the Spanish and Portuguese. truly a wretched history of death and extinction and misery. even to blame for the US. unforgivable.

These wolves are well known, from Byron's account of their tameness and curiosity, which the sailors, who ran into the water to avoid them, mistook for fierceness.
"Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World, 1832-36" - Charles Darwin

The artist drew that thing as if they thought it was gross. It looks like a sad little coyote stuffed.

Today I learned the story of the Falkland Island Wolf, and like many recently extinct animals, the story makes me sad and upset. This one is worse than normal though because, by all accounts, these animals were super friendly, and always approached humans with curiosity and trust.
The last one ever seen did just that, merrily walking up to a hunter in apparent hopes of making a friend, before being shot to death.

Could I request a moodboard for a coyote and maned wolf therian with a forest vibe (as a gift for my pookie, @homoguyzomby)? Thanks if you do!

Coyote and maned wolf board! Maned wolves are the sole member of their genus, Chrysocyon, and are not wolves are foxes but are still canines. Their two closest relatives are bush dogs and the extinct Falkland Island wolves. They are the tallest wild canids.

buckle up folks, its a long one
the Hatake turn into an animal during puberty, any animal and any Hatake-by-blood. after 24 hours, they turn human again and can then form contracts with bonded animals of their type.
adoption by blood is the Hatake's most coveted jutsu, though entirely unknown by other clans. the adopted lack the Hatake white chakra, but their children will have it!
Kakashi turns into a samoyed dog and this sparks great joy for Team Minato. this is why he has a bunch of dogs.
Sakumo is an arctic gray wolf and could bond with Fire Country's wolf packs.
Orochimaru is a blue coral snake. he adopted Anko, who is a boomslang snake, as well as his other kids; Kimimaro is a pangolin, Suigetsu is a leopard seal, Jugo is a tiger, and Karin is a giant river otter
Touka is a grizzly bear. she has several sun bear friends just to freak out the Senju elders.
Tobirama is a clouded leopard, and specifically took on missions to new places to look for leopards of different kinds, along with Touka for cousin-sibling bonding time!
if Kakashi starts using the blood adoption jutsu on his friends/students, well... that's clan business.
Sasuke turns into a nightjar! Itachi is a crow (obvs), and Shisui is a raven.
now, Kakashi didn't adopt Shisui. Shisui is Kagami's grandson, and Kagami was adopted by Tobirama, meaning Shisui has the Hatake white chakra! Kagami is a magpie.
Naruto becomes a maned wolf, which... well. Kakashi helps him find as many bush dogs and falkland wolves as possible, but they're rather rare critters.
Sakura becomes a lynx. she enjoys scaring the shit out of people with her calls.
Genma becomes a Komodo dragon, Hayate is a raccoon, Yugao a stoat
Sai is a burrowing owl, Iruka is an hourglass dolphin, Izumo is a sea eagle, and Kotetsu is a leopard shark.
Ino becomes a secretary bird, Shikamaru turns into an elk, and Choji is a giant salamander
Asuma is a gecko, Kurenai is a mocking bird, Tsunade is a bison, and Tenten is a porcupine!
Kiba is a borzoi and Hana is a newfoundlander
Hinata is a flemish giant rabbit and Neji is a badger

On April 4, 1406 King Robert III died.
King Robert III of Scotland has been described as a gentle and hesitant man, who lacked the ruthlessness of his devious and ambitious brothers, Robert of Fife and the notorious Alexander the Wolf of Badenoch.
Depressed and disabled by a kick from a horse, Robert III was unable to protect his sons against their wicked uncles.
The uncertainty surrounding John's legitimacy undermined his authority as King and even led to a bitter conflict between his descendants and the unquestionable legitimate descendants of Robert II Stewart's second marriage. If you remember my post about Robert II in March and the 20 plus children he fathered. Oh and the reference to John? Well Robert III chose his regal name himself considering John now to be unlucky, given the history of his namesake John I (Balliol)
Like his father before him, Robert was hesitant, weak willed, and ineffectual, nothing like his namesake the great Robert the Bruce. Anarchy reigned in Scotland during the years of his feeble rule; the country was beset by problems including rivalry between his brothers, the lords of the isles and the highlanders.
Again if you remember back to a previous post, David Stewart, 1st Duke of Rothesay was allegedly starved to death by his uncle The Duke of Albany at Falkland Palace and his brother, the future King James I was sent to France for his own safety, in case he fell foul to Albany and fellow conspirators. James however was captured by pirates and handed over to the English, this disastrous news was brought to the ageing King Robert at Rothesay Castle.
Distraught and depressed by the news and overcome with grief and despair he asked to be buried with the epitaph 'Here lies the worst of Kings and the most miserable of men.' He died soon after on 4th April, 1406 and was buried at Paisley Abbey, the second pic is my own from a visit in October 2016

not to weigh in on falklands island discourse but people really will be like "why on earth would Argentina want the falklands?" and then you look at a map and they're literally RIGHT next to Argentina
like genuinely way way closer than people would want you to think, like it's pretty obvious why they'd be upset about that hey?
Tumblr media
as a side note: the British settlers sent the Falklands wolf extinct, which was the only native land mammal on the islands. and it was actually really similar rational re. "they're getting the sheep" for sending them extinct to the thylacine. just an interesting fact

If you could revive and reintroduce and extinct species, which one would you chose, why, and where would you put it?
thank u 🥺 not gonna lie i had to look up a list of extinct animals and i still choose a breed of dog aka a falkland island wolf because i swear being mauled to death by wolf's is probably the way to go? but also like im convinced I'm a dog whisperer ✨ so i could just be like oh what a cute pupper ily and then they'd cuddle anyway 👁️👄👁️ so I'd put it in my bed to get ultimate doggo cuddles and have the best (realistically forever sleep but im in dreamland so)
