Animal of the Day!
Falkland Islands Wolf (Dusicyon australis)
Extinction Date- 1876
Habitat- Falkland Islands
Size (Weight/Length)- 1.6 m
Diet- Birds; Insects; Carrion
Cool Facts- The Falkland Islands wolf was the only native land mammal of the Falkland Islands off the southernmost tip of Argentina. These wolves were the first canine to go extinct in modern times. They excelled in hunting nesting birds and seals and may have scavenged washed up whale carcasses. When Charles Darwin visited the Islands, he predicted that the wolves would soon go extinct due to human interaction. The wolves were rapidly hunted for their furs and out of fear of them killing livestock, resulting in the last Falkland Islands wolf being killed in 1876. The closest living relative to these wolves are the maned wolves of mainland South America. Maned Wolves are near threatened due to habitat destruction but luckily conservation efforts in breeding, habitat protection, and the education of locals is keeping their population relatively steady.
Rating- 12/10 (Canis antarcticus is no longer used as a scientific name but man that taxidermy does the wolf dirty.)

The fossilized skull of a Falkland Islands wolf, a rare find given the islandsâ often acidic soil, which makes preservation difficult. Found on the grounds of Spring Point Farm on West Falkland, the skull is now on display at the Falkland Islands Museum and National Trust, East Falkland. [ x ]

These wolves are well known, from Byron's account of their tameness and curiosity, which the sailors, who ran into the water to avoid them, mistook for fierceness.

The artist drew that thing as if they thought it was gross. It looks like a sad little coyote stuffed.
This copperplate engraving of a Falkland islands wolf or warrah, titled âThe Wolf Fox of Faulklands Islands,â was published in âAn account of a Voyage Round the Worldâ in 1778. [x]
The species went extinct about a hundred years later.

Cryptid of the Day: Falkland Island Wolf
Description: The Warrah, or the Falkland Island Wolf, & sometimes incorrectly called the Antarctic Wolf, went extinct in the 1880s, though soldiers stationed during the Falkland War claimed to have seen it. Cryptozoologist Dale A. Drinnon suggested they were insular Andean Wolf population

Today I learned the story of the Falkland Island Wolf, and like many recently extinct animals, the story makes me sad and upset. This one is worse than normal though because, by all accounts, these animals were super friendly, and always approached humans with curiosity and trust.
The last one ever seen did just that, merrily walking up to a hunter in apparent hopes of making a friend, before being shot to death.

not to weigh in on falklands island discourse but people really will be like "why on earth would Argentina want the falklands?" and then you look at a map and they're literally RIGHT next to Argentina
like genuinely way way closer than people would want you to think, like it's pretty obvious why they'd be upset about that hey?
as a side note: the British settlers sent the Falklands wolf extinct, which was the only native land mammal on the islands. and it was actually really similar rational re. "they're getting the sheep" for sending them extinct to the thylacine. just an interesting fact

Could I request a moodboard for a coyote and maned wolf therian with a forest vibe (as a gift for my pookie, @homoguyzomby)? Thanks if you do!
Coyote and maned wolf board! Maned wolves are the sole member of their genus, Chrysocyon, and are not wolves are foxes but are still canines. Their two closest relatives are bush dogs and the extinct Falkland Island wolves. They are the tallest wild canids.

heartache maaaeeemmm
so, this is Vally, a 27 year old falklands island wolf nurse that heals it's patients back to health with love and affection, since she's often very sweet and gentle. but she frequently falls victim of the Florence Nightingale effect, maybe because she likes to see how helpless people are when they're sick or injuried. she never understand this and don't know why she feels this way when close to her patients, finding it very weird
and yes, in this animation she has no arms :| also she has 2 tails, but is only shaking one of them as the other tail is hidden
APPS USED: flipaclip (overall animation), ibispaint (that one image at the end), video maker (audio sync)
I was cleaning some stuffs from my gallery and saw i still had this. I wanted to delete it like everything, but i liked this animation so much i wanted to post it here (youtube always ruins the video's quality, i hope it doesn't do the same here)

If you could revive and reintroduce and extinct species, which one would you chose, why, and where would you put it?
thank u đ„ș not gonna lie i had to look up a list of extinct animals and i still choose a breed of dog aka a falkland island wolf because i swear being mauled to death by wolf's is probably the way to go? but also like im convinced I'm a dog whisperer âš so i could just be like oh what a cute pupper ily and then they'd cuddle anyway đïžđđïž so I'd put it in my bed to get ultimate doggo cuddles and have the best (realistically forever sleep but im in dreamland so)

It's always fascinating to uncover the mysteries of creation and the Biblical accounts of history. In this engaging article by Andrew Sibley, the focus is on the Warrah, or Falkland Islands wolf, and its presence on these isolated islands before the arrival of the first European settlers. The conundrum? How did it cross the ocean from South America, some 500 km away? Here's a summary of the key points:
â¶ïž The Warrah was present on the Falkland Islands when the first European settlers arrived in the 18th and 19th centuries. These settlers were mainly British, French, and Spanish, with some gaucho farmers from South America.
â¶ïž Unfortunately, due to hunting and the activity of the settlers, the Warrah became extinct by 1876.
â¶ïž Since the time of Darwin, attempts have been made to explain how and when the Warrah arrived at the Falklands. One theory suggests an ice bridge from Patagonia at the peak of the Ice Age.
â¶ïž Recent analysis of mtDNA from Warrah museum exhibits showed the closest living relative to be the maned wolf, and estimated the date of divergence to be between 4.2â8.9 Ma on the evolutionary timescale. However, this seems unlikely as it contradicts the evolutionary narrative.
â¶ïž Another mtDNA comparison with the extinct continental relative species, Dusicyon avus, leads to an estimate for isolation from the South American common ancestor at supposedly 16 ka, correlating with the evolutionary dates for the Ice Age.
â¶ïž Recent archaeological evidence suggests Fuegian Indians may have arrived in the Falkland Islands centuries (approximately 1275 to 1420 AD) before the Europeans, bringing with them their hunting dogs, potentially the ancestors of the Warrah.
The presence of the Warrah in the Falkland Islands aligns well with the Biblical timeframe, providing yet another example of the reliability of the Bible in explaining the natural world.
