Pity it's a fake.

It was a fake when I reblogged about it here in 2019, and it's still a fake now. (Check the two end-on piles of cut logs. They're mirror-images.)

The reblog includes some real examples of moose being draft animals, so there's that, also bison, ditto, then takes a look at how draft moose and elk might be used in fantasy fiction, a more honest form of making things up.

This guy raised an abandoned moose calf with his Horses, and believe it or not, he has trained it for lumber removal and other hauling tasks. Given the 2,000 pounds of robust muscle, and the splayed, grippy hooves, he claims it is the best work animal he has. He says the secret to keeping the moose around is a sweet salt lick, although, during the rut he disappears for a couple of weeks, but always comes home…. Impressive !! MINNESOTA CLYDESDALE

Fake baby birds.

For some reason there have been a lot of incorrect and even fake images of baby birds going around. Perhaps you saw the AI generated fake baby peacock? The baby crow is a real photo of a real young avian... but it's not a crow (Turns out this fluffy little one is a baby rail-- more info here at the "corvid research blog" which has been mad about this photo for like years. )

Over on the Fediverse (most call it 'Mastodon') there are a lot of people posting about science and nature. @ct_bergstrom@fediscience.org, Carl T. Bergstrom shared his photo of a (real) fledgling crow just a few hours out of the nest... just look:

This bird looks like the kind of kid who spends all their time talking to whatever adults will listen about their obsession with traffic light timing. At first? It's kinda cute and a little annoying, but then it

gets really interesting because it turns out some of the light timing problems are related to graph theory---(this got way too specific... But you know the type right? Always calls you Mr. ___ or Mrs. ___ even if you tell them not to?) If you love corvids you should follow Carl T. Bergstrom over on the Fediverse. Every day there's new drama with these guys.

WTF is Up Wid Dis?

Over the last 2 weeks, Tumblr has been sending me "followers" who have nothing on their pages, all using scantily clad females wanting to be my "friend". I block them all, but their numbers are ridiculous. Obviously attempts to spam/scam, so a word to those idiots doing this - I block shit like this. Go spam/scam a billionaire - that would help us all.

AIn’t Real

Take a look at the image above.

What do you see?

At first blink, from the clothes and hair it seems to be a photo from the mid-1970s to early 1980s.

Blink again.

I’m not a professional photographer but I do know something about the science and history of picture taking, and this doesn’t share either the tone or the texture of genuine photos from that era.

I’m not referring here to color faded snapshots but professional photos of the era.  I know something about the various film stocks used at that time; each one has its own unique color warmth and grain texture.

Old negatives create images on microscopic particles of silver suspended in the film’s emulsion.  Depending on how many and how fine the particles were and how sensitive they were to light, the resulting image would display varying degrees of grain from the very rough to the very smooth.  None of those film stocks look anything like this.

So that alerted my radar and I looked closer at the image.

Check the shadows at the feet of the two figures.  They’re almost jet black on a bright and sunny day.  Ambient spill light would lighten it enough to discern asphalt texture beneath it.

Further, not only do the shadows not match up with the figures supposedly casting them, they don’t match up with the shadow from the car itself.

Take a look at that car, particularly the license plate.  There’s a couple of readable letters and numbers on it, but there are also symbols that resemble letters and numbers but aren’t actual letters or numbers.

Finally, wot da hell is going on atop the car?  Some kind of Lovecraftian horror?

AI generated image.

Not real.

Now what’s the big deal about this, you ask?

Most people at first glance see the image, interpret it as a photo from the mid-1970s to early 1980s, ///accept it as genuine///, and scroll on.

I’m different because of my background and experience; I saw clues that tipped me this wasn’t real. 

So what’s the harm?  If it had been a photorealistic work of hand drawn art, would it be problematic?

Not if identified as such.

But this image was prompted to look as much like a genuine photo as possible.

As noted most people see it, register it in their mind, then scroll on.

This image -- in and of itself -- is harmless.

But imagine images that look real at a brief glance that shape you opinion and views on something.

Nothing extreme, no shots of celebrities doing outrageous acts, but let’s say a politician seen in close proximity of a person accused of bribing politicians.

The meeting never occurred, but you seen the image and without recognizing it was AI generated, you accepted it -- and the implied relationship -- as real.

See where that leads us?

This is not a new phenomenon.  Political campaigns have doctored photos for generations, hoping to trick viewers into believing something that didn’t happen…

…did.

Sometimes it’s accomplished by skillful editing, cropping out elements that entirely change the meaning of the photo.

Sometimes it’s accomplished by surreptitiously adding an element, adding a person to a photo who wasn’t there.

Sometimes it’s accomplished by overlaying the face of one figure over the body of another, creating the impression they did something they didn’t do.

Most people don’t pay close attention to what they consume.

The nice thing about poison is that you’ll see the results PDQ.

Fake photos can take a lifetime to kill you.

Genie Gave Me a Brother AU

Tim's parents send home an artifact that is said to able to grant wishes! While being curious about it Tim messes with the artifact and when he 'solves' it, according to legend one must solve it to get a wish, he wishes he wasn't alone anymore.

The object glows bright and as he shields his eyes he can hear.

'So you have wished it, so it shall be!'

He gets his wish in the form of a recently reincarnated ghost!King (who entered the DC world for a reincarnated vaycay... he should had known something was going to happen because CW was encouraging the break) Danny whose just a baby/toddler right now.

Basically, big brother Tim and baby Danny adventures in Gotham after that.
