Hey, quick question, do tumblr users not know that the general public have never heard of “the fae”
I swear, the way people on this site talk about the fae it’s as if their lore is as well known as vampires. Where did everyone learn this? Is this what that Fairyology book is about?

just remembered a dream from last night or a few nights ago idk. pokemon center added books in the style of those old Dragonology books except they had one for each pokemon type. so it was like these very fancy illustrations of pokemon with descriptions in that style. and there was a Fairyology (idk what it was actually called) and i wanted it SO bad but all the books were like $500

How I Became a Witch
I want to tell this story because I've never really thought about it until now and thought it'd be fun to share.
Now what I'm about to say is really unhelpful and cliche but it's simply the truth lol.
I personally think I have always been a witch, since the day I could think for myself honestly.
I grew up in the deeeep south in America, almost as deep south as you can be, and my state is primarily Republicans and Christians, which means we're always 30 years behind on progress, especially when it comes to different spiritualities. So, for all of my childhood, neither me or my mother knew witchcraft was real and that people practiced it, but I was still raised to think like one.
I could see spirits as a child and speak to trees, and my mother noticed VERY quickly that I was absolutely fascinated in these ways. My childhood was filled to the brim with books titled fairyology, dragonology, spiderwick chronicals, ect. I was so into the supernatural that my mother actually made up stories from her childhood about her being a witch. Once she told me that she learned to fly on a broomstick and showed all her friends. After hearing this I demanded that she teach me how, so she made up a ritual on the spot, with no knowledge of how magic works. She put this 2 foot tall cushioned stool infront of me and told me to stand on it. After I got on it she told me the squat slightly, with my arms stretched forward, and to pretend I'm as light as a feather, and to think really hard about it. When I was ready, she told me to jump forward. I ended up jumping 8 feet forward. So in my 7 year old eyes, that worked, and I now knew how to fly. Maybe this counts as an Initiation to becoming a witch.
In middle school I shoved down my beliefs and skills because I thought I was crazy, that was also a very dark time in my life.
But in high school I discovered people ACTUALLY practice REAL witchcraft. At first I was certain it was just a joke, but I was wrong. Apparently it was more common than I was lead to believe. So, I bought my very first book on witchcraft, and my very first spell candle. A love spell candle. I read the book, some parts over and over again. It was a bit of a culture shock to see so many rules, and theories and have magic so... organized. Any magic I did before was based of instinct, there were no correspondences, no gods or deities I contacted, no sacred circles. It was overwhelming. The first spell I did was using the candle to attract love. Not from anyone specific, just in general, and than after that, for the very first time boys started to flirt with me. I denied all of them but it was fascinating. After that I kept adding books to my collection and trying new things. Eventually I allowed myself to believe in what I believed in as a kid again, but that took many years of healing. It wasn't until this year I started going back to my childish roots, and now my magic is stronger than ever.
And I've just barely scraped the surface of what the world has to offer. Even after practicing kind of... all my life.
So yeah, that's my story. I'd love to hear any others if anyone feels like sharing.

The acuity of fairies’ vision
Tumblr media
— I thought… this is a fairy-tail...
— It is. But so what? Since this is a fairy-tail, what makes you think that the laws of physics stop working here? Imagine what would happen in a fairy-tail world if gravity would not work there. What about friction? Or if solar energy wouldn’t warm up Earth! Are aerodynamic laws any different in that sense?
Yury Nesterenko, “A Hero, a Dragon and a Princess”
The acuity of fairies’ vision Third Research
How clear can a fairy see? Can science help us with this question?
Yes, it can. And we don’t need to catch even one specimen for that. All we need to know is her pupil size. Thanks to our previous fairyology paper, we know that a fairy’s height is about 10 cm.
Easy enough. What now? Should we build a camera with such a tiny lens and take a couple of pictures? That would be great! Moreover, such cameras exist already. They are usually used for medical and engineering purposes. Take a look at this insect:
https://youtu.be/B3z5XV8iH9I
This is a clear hint that a fairy would see many microscopic details much, much better than a human. And it’s not a big surprise.
Tumblr media
And what about panoramic views? Unfortunately, no one bothers filming anything with it other than tiny objects. This is the best recording I found:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0j3Ca7xoYA
If you have a similar camera, please conduct such an experiment and film an open area using it.
In this example, we can see a tiny bit of the room. And to be honest, the clarity is not too bad. Notice how dark it is. And you may already know why. The lens is tiny, and the poor sensor just doesn’t receive enough photons to show us a clear picture. The smaller the camera, the more noise and worse image quality we get.
Does it mean that a fairy sees everything darker and with such noise?
Not necessarily! You might have noticed that photographs become noisier in low light conditions, while a human eye doesn’t see this noise (although human’s pupil might be even smaller than an objective of a camera). Two final pieces of the puzzle are the sensors and the processing of the image. We can only speculate how a fairy’s retina works and how the signals are processed. Instead, let’s take a look at this demo:
https://youtu.be/qWKUFK7MWvg
Tumblr media
Impressive? How is it possible to restore so many details from an almost dead photo? Well, one might hire digital artists (maybe from my team) and let them do the job, but in this case, we have something more interesting.
The new program benefits from the artificial neural networks, smart algorithms that somewhat resemble the human brain. First, the scientists show to the program a very dark photograph (a bad one) and the same image, but with the correct exposure (a good one). After showing several thousands of such bad and good pictures, the computer managed to “learn” how to restore dark, noisy images. Let me stress it: the machine could generalise the approach and use this “skill” to correct the new pictures never seen previously.
Source: http://cchen156.web.engr.illinois.edu/paper/18CVPR_SID.pdf
That means that slightly darker world is not a big problem. A fairy can theoretically process the image, so it doesn’t look dark and noisy. Hey, you do it daily and don’t even notice it!
However, no processing can defeat the diffraction limit.  Don’t panic and let me explain what it means.
Granted that we don’t know what crystalline lens might fairies have, but we can measure their maximum possible acuity just by knowing the pupil size. All thanks to the wave nature of light.
Imagine water waves hitting the small opening:
Tumblr media
Source: http://labman.phys.utk.edu/phys222core/modules/m9/Diffractionpictures/single.htm
Notice how parallel waves spread out and move radially. The smaller the opening, the more spread we get. Light behaves precisely like that with the only difference: the light waves are much, much smaller.
And how does the small opening affect the quality of the picture?
If we asked a photographer about small and large aperture (gap in the objective), he would start telling us about f-stops, exposure, depth of field and other stuff. However, almost everyone omits one important detail. Let me show you the diffraction limit in action. I printed out one page from the script of our next animated episode about Tink and Vidia. I printed the Russian version on purpose, so you don’t get distracted. Here it is:
Tumblr media
The number f/13 means that the aperture of the objective is half-closed. Take a closer look at the blurred background and compare it to the closed aperture (f/36). The background becomes sharper, and you may even distinguish my little Halloween figure. Does it mean that the smaller the opening, the better?
Not at all! Let’s take an even closer look at the text.
Tumblr media
You may need to download the picture to see it. Let me show it even closer.
Tumblr media
Notice, the small details become blurry, not because of the wrong focus. I focused on the image manually and kept the setting. Everything gets blurry because of the nature of the light itself. I encourage everyone to do this little experiment at home. To see the effect clearly, however, you’ll need a professional objective (mine isn’t great either, but just enough to see the diffraction a little bit).
Now let’s get back to the fairies’ vision. Using the Fraunhofer formula, we can calculate the angle at which the image details become blurry beyond recognition. As for the wavelength, let’s take a beautiful green light that’s about 540 nanometres.
Tumblr media
But what exactly means 0.057°? Let me illustrate it:
Tumblr media
That means that a scout fairy will NEVER see a 1.8 m tall pirate from 2 km distance—he will be blurred completely. While a human scout would spot such a tall target from 3 km distance.
Source: https://www.livescience.com/33895-human-eye.html
Conclusion
A fairy’s vision allows seeing the microscopic details much better than a human can with the naked eye. Small pupil means that the image would appear darker. Sophisticated processing, however, can mitigate this issue. The refraction limit makes the eyesight less acute in comparison to a human eye, which makes the observation of distant objects and scouting, in general, more challenging.
Think about it! We managed to find out so much about fairies’ vision just by using some physics and mathematics!
Stay tuned for move scientific adventures!

You know, I’d just like to say, I don’t know when we were all supposed to learn about the Fae.
Like years ago there were tons of posts making jokes about people giving their names to the Fae or eating Fae food or whatever makes them belong to the Fae, or finding loopholes to escape that stuff.
Hell, I don’t know if I even knew the word before those posts. I just had to infer people were talking about fairies and that they special rules and contracts and were malicious.
Like was there a folklore class everyone took that I missed out on? Was there a show or something with this stuff in it that I completely missed? Did I, by some sheer coincidence, follow a bunch of people who read Fairyology or whatever the -ology book for fairies was called?
People were making references as if they were as present in pop culture as vampires. Did I miss something?

Given the almost complete lack of quality control among occult publishing it can be hard to find good books on magic. Im glad we can all agree that the Wizardology books fuck though.

Madoka Ikaruga | [SSR] Wizard of April Fool’s | An Untimely New Student - Part 2
Tumblr media
Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3
Haruto: First off, here’s a magic classroom.
Haruto: As you can see, the students of the Spring Dormitory are practicing their magic right now. They deal with wind magic.
Madoka: (I’m curious about the magic practice… I wonder what kind of things they do.)
Citron: Ooh? Is that a new face I see?
Haruto: These are the late-arrival new students, Madoka and Shift. You guys should teach them a thing or two.
Tsuzuru: These must be the new students they were talking about. I thought they were supposed to get their dorms assigned tomorrow.
Sakuya: Hello. I’m the Spring Dorm leader, third year, Sakuya!
Sakuya: Nice to meet you! If you end up in Spring Dorm, we’ll all welcome you.
Shift: Nice to meet you too! It’s amazing that you’re the dorm leader even though you’re only a third-year.
Haruto: The dorm leaders are chosen by election with everyone in the dorm, regardless of grade or age.
Madoka: I see.
Citron: I’m fifth-year, Citron. Nice to meet you~.
Citron: I’ll show you welcome magic immediately! Tada~!
*Magic appears and wind blows*
Madoka: Eh… Wahwah…!
Madoka: (A gust of wind just blew around the classroom…!)
Sakuya: Uwaah! The magic books and stuff flew away!
Tumblr media
Tsuzuru: Wait, Citron-san, that’s overkill!
Citron: Oh, sorry. My welcome was just overflowing with feelings.
Tsuzuru: Sigh, jeez…
Citron: This is Tsuzuru, a fourth-year! Tsuzuru and I are a magical comedy duo.
Citron: Please look forward to the school festival, we perform together every year!
Shift: Ooh, sounds interesting!
Madoka: (Th-there’s a comedy duo at a magic school…?)
Sakuya: Over here is sixth-year, Chikage-san!
Madoka: Nice to meet you. What are you mixing up there?
Chikage: I’m testing an extreme concoction of magic spices with magical powers.
Madoka: (Magic spices… Seems kind of weird…)
Shift: Spices, huh? I wonder what it tastes like. Let me try some. …Awmph.
Madoka: Eh!?
Haruto: How can you just eat a random spice when you don’t even know what it is…
Shift: Ooh, this is spicy and delicious! It’d be good for seven-spice udon!
Shift: Please share it with me if you’re willing!
Tumblr media
Chikage: Of course.
Madoka: (They’re really hitting it off…)
Madoka: …Hm?
Itaru: …
Madoka: (!? Th-there’s a guy sitting awkwardly under a desk… And he’s got some kind of beeping device.)
Itaru: Oh, hell yeah.
Madoka: G-good job…?
Madoka: I wonder if he went under the desk to escape the windstorm earlier. What is up with this guy…?)
Tsuzuru: That guy is Itaru-san, a fifth-year.
Tsuzuru: Don’t mark him as just a delinquent student, he’s actually pretty competent, but he plays games instead of studying magic.
Madoka: H-huh…
Itaru: Can’t deny that. I’m only a wizard when I need to be.
Chikage: He’s only eager to do things like recreating things from games and manga.
Itaru: The technique I recreated the other day was majorly perfect though.
Sakuya: That magic was really really cool!
Citron: But he got absolutely destroyed by the gacha pull he did when he tried to use magic to summon the SSR.
Tumblr media
Itaru: Uugh… Stop putting salt in the wound…
Madoka: (Hmm, someone who’s just enthusiastic for what they love, I guess.)
Tsuzuru: Now, this guy over here, he’s delinquent student number two. Second-year Masumi.
Shift: Wow, he’s reading a really thick book.
Citron: It’s a book on fairyology.
Madoka: Reading magic books and taking notes makes him seem pretty serious about his studies…
Tsuzuru: Hear how he’s mumbling right now? Just listen to him closely…
Madoka: ?
Tumblr media
Masumi: Planning a date with a fairy… A good gift to give is…
Madoka: E-Eh?
Shift: He seems like he’s doing research in some kind of fever dream.
Tsuzuru: He fell in love with the sorting fairy that sorted him into the dorm when he was admitted to the school.
Itaru: Since then, he’s become a sharp student who only studies fairyology to make that fairy fall in love with him. He won’t study magic in other fields.
Haruto: That motive for learning is too impure!
Sakuya: W-Well, Masumi-kun’s fairyology grades are always the top in the school!
Masumi: Obviously. I want to know everything about her. I’d do anything to be her boyfriend.
Chikage: Overall, Spring Dorm has a free atmosphere where every student can learn in their own way.
Sakuya: Yeah! If you two get put here, I hope you’ll be able to do whatever you’d like.
Madoka: Thank you very much.
Madoka: (Spring Dorm seems like a fun place with a lot of nice upperclassman.)
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Haruto: This is the courtyard. Sometimes classes are taught here.
Shift: Ah, they’re doing some kind of magical hand-to-hand combat!
Haruto: The ones using fire magic are from Summer Dorm, and the ones using Earth Magic are from Autumn Dorm.
Tenma: Burn!
*Magic appears and fire roars*
Banri: That’s all you got? Hah!
*Magic appears and ground rumbles*
Madoka: (S-So cool… The flames flared up and went at his opponent and then the wall of earth appeared preventing the flames from hitting…)
Banri: Take this!
Tenma: I’m not done yet!
*Fire and earth magic swirl together and roar*
Shift: Oh man, it’s getting heated really fast!
Haruto: Oi, you two! Cut it out!
Tumblr media
Banri & Tenma: !
Muku: Ah, Haruto-sensei! And with you are…
Misumi: Madokaaaa!!
Madoka: Wah…!
Shift: Woah, that startled me! You just suddenly jumped on Madoka out of nowhere.
Misumi: Ehehe, Madoka, welcome~!
Madoka: It’s been a while, Nii-san.
Shift: Nii-san? I mean, you do look kind of similar… You’re brothers then?
Madoka: Yeah.
Misumi: I’m in Summer Dorm, fourth-year, Misumi! Madoka is my lil’ brother~.
Misumi: From now on, Madoka is a student here! I’m so happy to be with him~.
Madoka: Nii-san… I’m happy to be at school with you too.
Kazunari: Awesome! The brothers being super buddy-buddy has got me supes hyped up! Say cheese!
*Camera shutters*
Shift: Ooh, is that a magic camera!? So cool!
Tumblr media
Kazunari: You betcha! I’m Kazunari, a Summer Dorm fourth-year just like Sumi! Nice to meetcha~!
Misumi: Kazu’s a well-known influencer in the wizard world.
Shift: Seriously!? That’s like super, super cool!
Kazunari: I’ll teach you everything you need to know about trends in the wizard world ☆ Just ask me anytime~.
Madoka: O-Okay, thank you very much.
Shift: But still, brothers being enrolled at the same magic school, huh?
Shift: I have a younger brother too. I wonder if he’ll get to come to this school someday~.
Azami: Yo, you’re finally here.
Shift: A-Azami!
Madoka: Do you know each other?
Shift: Yeah, we’ve known each other since we were little. He started school a little earlier than we did.
Azami: I’m Azami, Autumn Dorm first-year.
Madoka: Nice to meet you.
Kumon: Huh, I didn’t know you were childhood friends with one of the new students, Azami!
Kumon: I’m a Summer Dorm second-year, Kumon. If you’re Azami’s friend, then you’re my friend too!
Shift: Yeah! Let’s get along.
Tumblr media
Azami: You guys sure seem to be on the same page.
Shift: Tell me some stuff about the school!
Kumon: Then let me introduce you to my big brother! He’s the strongest guy in the school!
Kumon: Nii-chan!
Juza: What is it, Kumon?
Kumon: These are the two new students.
Kumon: Guys, this guy is my big brother, Juza! He’s an Autumn Dorm third-year.
Juza: Nice to meetcha.
Madoka: …! L-Likewise…
Muku: Don’t worry, Ju-chan might look a little scary, but he has a really gentle personality.
Muku: I’m Muku, a Summer Dorm first-year. Kyu-chan and Ju-chan are my cousins.
Shift: Ooh, I see!
Madoka: (There are a lot of people who are related in this school.)
Banri: Strongest guy in this school? Oi, don’t listen to that bullshit.
Banri: As the third-year dorm leader of Autumn Dorm, my magic is obviously stronger than that guy’s shitty magic. My magic is a helluva lot stronger.
Banri: Hah? Who’s magic is shitty?
Banri: Hah, yours, asshole.
Juza: Fuck off, mine is way stronger.
Banri: Is that so? You wanna go then?
Juza: Let’s go.
Haruto: Wait, I don’t want to get involved in your stupid, petty quarrel…
Sakyo: You two! The hell do you think you’re doing in front of the new students!?
Juza & Banri: !!
Madoka: A-Amazing… Is that a teacher…?
Haruto: No, that’s seventh-year’s Sakyo.
Shift: Huh!? That guy’s a student too!?
Madoka: (Even though they’re still students, the seventh-years have such a presence… No, they’re just more mature…)
Madoka: (But I still wonder how in the world those two guys arguing and the seventh-year senior are gonna get it all sorted out…)
Omi: Whoa, whoa, whoa, hey guys, I’ve got freshly baked scones~. Here, take one, Sakyo-san~.
Banri: Mnph!?
Juza: Awmph.
Sakyo: Hm!?
Sakyo: Mmh… Oi, Fushimi, don’t just suddenly shove scones in people’s mouths…!
Tumblr media
Omi: Haha, sorry.
Madoka: (That guy is amazing, he just stopped a fight without physical force…)
Taichi: Here’s some for you guys and Haruto-sensei too!
Madoka: Eh? Ah, thank you…
Shift: Uwah, they look super good!
Taichi: If you end up in Autumn Dorm, you can enjoy Omi-kun’s super yummy scones every day!
Taichi: By the way, I’m Taichi, a second-year. Nice to meet ya!
Haruto: It is true that all of fourth-year Fushimi’s cooking and confections are delicious, but why is he so good at it?
Tenma: Hey, freshman. I’m Tenma, second-year, proud dorm leader of Summer Dorm.
Shift: Ah, you were the guy using fire magic earlier, right?
Tenma: Yeah. My magic was pretty powerful and cool, don’t you think?
Madoka: Yeah, it was really impactful.
Tenma: Fufu, naturally. If you’re put into Summer Dorm, I’d be happy to lend you my time to help you practice magic.
Tenma: Our dorm is pretty lively too because Kazunari and Misumi throw a lot of dorm parties…
Yuki: Or you could just call it what it is and say it’s loud and obnoxious every night.
Tenma: Ugh… I-It’s only a little noisy, not that much…
Madoka: Who are you?
Yuki: Summer Dorm first-year, Yuki.
Yuki: Hmm…
Madoka: (W-Why is he looking me up and down like that?)
Yuki: Well, if you get put in Summer Dorm, I’ll tailor you a robe to fit you perfectly.
Muku: Yuki-kun is a magical designer! He always makes us all kinds of robes and accessories.
Shift: Ooh, that’s cool!
Misumi: Hey, hey, Yuki! I want you to make matching magical triangle hats for me and Madoka!
Yuki: Hats, huh? Got it, I’ll start thinking up a design.
Tumblr media
Misumi: Yaay, thank you!
Madoka: Th-thank you.
Madoka: (All of the students have all kinds of talents…)
Sakyo: You’ll be welcome in whatever dorm you end up in.
Omi: Yeah. If you have any questions you can always ask us anything.
Taichi: Next time, let’s go out and ride brooms together!
Shift: Yeah!
