Anyone know if elflocks are made up to justify white “dreads”?? I don’t hate the idea of white people with a dreadlock-adjacent hairstyle (I’m white btw) but I feel like we shouldn’t aim to imitate a culturally significant hairstyle. From what I can tell the distinction between dreads and elflocks are that elflocks are Caucasian and the result of no brushing, encouraging your hair to form loosely into mats, very messy and loose, while dreads are a more clean defined look

Now, I want to preface this by saying: Larry doesn't have a canon love interest, and on this blog, we love and support any and all ships that involve people of legal ages. If you ship Larry with Saguaro, valid; Rika, valid; Grusha, valid; self-insert, valid; Geeta... don't get that one personally, but you're valid; Old Man Trio, valid. I love you, your opinion matters greatly, and I have happily read all of the above and enjoyed them.

... But me, personally? All about that vanillacupcakes life. And I thought for a while, despite Katy using an ace that is a Normal type, that that was as far as the symbolism went. It was more that I liked the idea than anything, y'know? Larry deserves a soft but fierce person who will step on him after baking him brownies, and she gets a nice battle challenge when Geeta makes her go soft on the students... it just works for me, honestly. Bi4bi. <3

... But, well... I've noticed a thing. Dangerous that, when you're me.

Yesterday, wandering around during my Fairylocke, I found this:

... Huh. You can find this lovely lady bear in Dalizapa Passage, up on some rocks, and... not only is it Flying, but it's also female, which Katy's Ursaring also so happens to be.

But, hey. Even though the odds of this are very low... easy to write this off as a coincidence, right? Well, you'd think... and then there's this guy.

Just up from the Secluded Beach, in a swampland area, is this Flamigo. A male Flamigo, in fact... just like Larry's.

... Would anyone care to hazard a guess as to what the odds of this being random, each with its correct gender, is?

It's 0.00077% (so my dear pal Han tells me, I'm not this good at maths) factoring in the eighteen types each of these could have been, with each Pokemon gender available to each species - or put another way, 7.7 in 10,000.

... Do you know what the random shiny odds are in this game? 1 in 4096, as it has been since gen VI, or 0.0244%.

This is only around twice as less likely to have happened than a full odds shiny post-gen VI, which is... huh. These are the only two wild Tera Ursarings and Flamigos in the game, and just in case you were curious...

There's only one other Flying/Fighting type in this game, Hawlucha. Guess what type it is?

... And there's also a Bug/Flying type, Scyther, who just so happens to be a Normal type.

May have to rethink that whole 'they've got no symbolism' thing...

Did anyone notice.. that I've been wearing contacts a bit more? I've got monthlies at the moment so I'm trying to get a good amount of use out of this pair. Aus dem Leben eines “Filzkopfes” – „Cultural Appropriation“ und andere Konfrontationen mit dem Dreadlockhairstyle

Mittlerweile schonwieder über ein Jahr trage ich meine geliebte Filzfrisur, auch Dread- oder Fairylocks genannt. Auch wenn Dreads oder Dreadlocks, die wohl gängigste Bezeichnung sind, versuch ich mich nun umzugewöhnen und sie „Fairylocks“ zu nennen. Der Begriff ist für mich viel positiver behaftet und es ist doch schöner „Feenlocken“ als „Schreckens- oder Grauenslocken“ auf meinem Haupt zu tragen. Darüber macht man sich aber nicht so schnell Gedanken, wenn der Begriff sich doch so eingebürgert und gehalten hat.

Jedoch stieß ich auf das Streitthema „cultural appropriation“, die kulturelle Aneignung des Dreadlock-Hairstyles und so begann der Gedankenstrudel. Es hieße nämlich, dass sich „die Weißen“ die Symbole und Trends „der Schwarzen“ unter den Nagel reißen. Das erste Mal war ich ganz perplex, empfinde ich doch, wenn dann, eher Zu- als Abneigung gegenüber POC (People of Color) und deren Geschichten. Ich geriet sogar eine Situation, in der mir von einer sehr empörten Frau vor die Füße gespuckt wurde. Schluss. Jetzt musste ich mich dahingehend noch besser informieren! Gesagt, getan.

Allerdings wurde mir meine Skepsis schnell genommen, da diese Frisur viele Kulturen seit vielen Jahrhunderten begleitet und keiner bestimmten Gruppe definitiv zugeordnet werden kann. So fand und findet man Dreadlocks in Indien, Pakistan, Ägypten, bei den Germanen, Wikingern und sogar schon seit dem Mittelalter auch in Mitteleuropa. Und auch die Ideologie warum jemand Dreadlocks trägt ist so verschieden wie es einzelne Dreadlocks auf der ganzen Welt gibt. Die sogenannte Black-Power-Bewegung trug die Haare als Statement verfilzt, weil sie sich nicht unterwerden wollten und mitunter so ein Zeichen setzten. Im Mittelalter hießen verfilzte Haare „Weichselzopf“ und wurde sogar von Königen getragen. Für mich heißt das, dass es verfilzte Haare, genauso wie normale Haare wohl schon immer und überall gab.

Trotzdem sind solche Spuck-Situationen wie oben erwähnt unangenehm. Ich weiß zwar jetzt, dass ich als Kontrastargument in Zukunft gleich die Wikinger hernehmen werde, aber die Tatsache, dass ich POC kränke ist schon genug Belastung. Denn nicht nur hier herrscht eine Stigmatisierung, sondern auch von so ziemlich allen anderen Menschen, denen ich auf meinen öffentlichen Wegen begegne. Nicht nur einmal wurde ich am Vormittag mitten in Wien nach Gras oder anderen Drogen gefragt. Erwidert man diese Frage mit Verwirrung heißt es oft „Ach, tu doch nicht so, vor mir kannst du´s eh zugeben!“. Was denn zugeben? Dass es mich unheimlich nervt aufgrund meiner Frisur als Drogendealer oder -junkie gesehen zu werden? Auf jeden Fall geb ich das zu! Natürlich war mir das auch bewusst, bevor ich mich dazu entschieden hab mir nochmals meine Haare verfilzen zu lassen (hatte ich bereits mit 12 das erste Mal Fairylocks wo es mir, trotz des jungen Alters, genauso ergangen war), aber diese Hartnäckigkeit von Neid, Vorurteilen, Verurteilungen und Stigmata macht es einem wirklich nicht gerade leichter.

Ich trage meine Fairys – sind sie doch auch von der Bedeutung her wie Feen für mich, die mich in meinem Wohlbefinden unterstützen – mit Stolz und werde meine Frisur nicht in Frage stellen. Denn im Endeffekt ist es genau das: Eine Frisur.

This costumer made her own locs, but wanted som help in the end, Because they didn't stay put and had trouble with sectioning. She asked to tidy up the existing locs and extend them with human hair dread extensions she brought herself. It's so satisfying to do these kind of jobs. I had to comb out a few or had to seperate so I could backcomb and crochet. She has a spot left for a loc in the middle.
