🎊 2-Year Anniversary! 🪅
I started the World Challenge around April 2022, so here's my little 2-year celebratory post with a bunch of stats that no one cares about!!
The stats:
Books read: 70
Countries completed: 66
Total pages read: 23,918
Average rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 3.9 stars
Average publication year: 2015
Average page count per book: 341
Native authors: 74%
Queer books: 24%
YA or MG genre: 68%
As you can see from the number above, it can be hard to find queer books for certain countries. I have also somehow managed to generally pick books that I like, as the ratings show!
Top Genres:
Sources:
Total spent: $41.39
Most of the spent is 2 months of Scribd, and some Kindle sale books. The "Other" is, ahem, when there were no affordable options, and thankfully that was low! Otherwise I managed well with libraries and free trials! (all digital)

Tag someone you want to get to know better! Or just check in with.
Favourite colour: A nice dark green. Or black as my cat :-)
Last song: "Roll to me" by Del Amitri. Which I am absolutely certain there was a fanvid of, but I can't remember the fandom and the Leverage one I can find does not feel right. *grumbles*
Last movie: I watched "The Blob" last weekend. Genuine 50s sci-fi horror. The effects were surprisingly decent, considering (fake, absolutely, but not breaking the suspension of disbelief), but the acting - honestly? I now want teenage Lille Per vs cosmic horrors, because that's the vibe I got. So 50s.
Currently watching: "The Legend of Vox Machina". It's okay. I'm never going to be in that fandom, but watching an episode every 2-3 days have been entertaining - once I got past the first two. If I hadn't been spoiled/osmosis'ed ahead of time, I would have gone no further, but once the plot starts happening it balances the alleged humour better - but honestly, as awful openings goes, it's right up there with "De udvalgte".
Other stuff I watched this year: Bit of this, bit of that. Good Omens, of course. A Korean Odyssey, where I enjoyed the side characters far more than the main couple. The Woman King, which felt incredibly US military movie, which I suppose is faif, as that's what it is. Wakanda Forever because Namor. Other things.
Shows I dropped this year: Not a show as such, but - I've finally dropped the MCU. As in I've stopped watching every movie in cinemas (honestly, I've mostly quit cinemas these days). I'll watch an individual movie if it interests me (*points to favourite angry merman*), but I doubt very many of them will.
Last book: "City of Bones" by Martha Wells. Which has a lot of the stuff you also see in her newest work - especially the non-human protagonist that does not fit in among his own kind. The novel itself is okay - post-apocalyptic high fantasy.
Currently reading: Since the publication of the last volume is finally within sight, I've started reading "Heaven Official's Blessing". So far so good, though the main character feels a bit bland. Also reading R.F. Kuang's "The Poppy War" and finding the parallels to Chinese history at once extremely heavy-handed and at the same time curiously - revisionist? Oh, it totally wasn't the fantasy!English they fought Opium Wars with, it was the fantasy!Japanese. But I'm only about 100 pages in. We'll see.
Tagging @calvinahobbes, @robininthelabyrinth, @kattahj and @daughterofscotland and anybody else who'd like to play

I literally remember Netanyahu praising Trump for his support for Isreal during Trump's first term. I know Netanyahu wants Trump to win because that orange fucker will shamelessly send even more weapons to Israel, send more soldiers, and hell I wouldn't be suprised if Trump would supply nucleae weapons to Israel.
Trump has already stated for Israel to "finish the job". Trump wants the total genocide of Palestinians. He wants Israel to continue to assault surrounding countries under the guise of "Hamas". He wants a Ww3.
And that's not even touching Project2025/Agenda47 and how many millions of people will be oppressed, brutalized, deported, and/or killed. Or the fact that the Supreme Court ruled the president to essentially be a King who cannot be held accountable.
I get why people are pissed about this election. People are sick of having to settle for the lesser evil, because it's between that or complete facism. They don't want to vote for politicians so blatently ignoring international law in favor of profit and power.
But until ranked voting becomes a thing, until the great revolution is actually feasible and not just some political equivalence to the great rapture, we are stuck voting between a facist and a politician.
Biden stepping down was the right choice. His blatant support for Israel killed his appeal, and it finally got through his head. Whatever good he did bring to this country, which to be faif he did more than I expected, means nothing in comparison to his support for the Palestinian Genocide. Or how he's STILL participating in the inhumane act putting immigrants into camps and depriving them of basic human rights before deporting them.
I have no idea how Harris will be as president. At worst, she's just another lackluster politician not doing nearly as much as anyone would want her to, and at best she's meeting the bar that's set at the crust of the Earth. But she is undoubtedly more appealing for the simple fact that she can be reasoned with.
Linked below is a form you can send to Harris is express what's important to you, what you expect, and what will cost her your support.
Make it clear that unlike Biden, you expect her to take a stance against Israel. That as president, she will stop the export of weapons and soldiers, and follow international law and rulings. That you expect her to live up to her promise to end mass incarceration, protect abortion rights, balance the courts and impeach corrupt judges.
one of my friends (also a leftist) said that because we live in utah, it doesn't matter who he votes for, and there's no way he will vote for a "fucking cop who was complicit in genocide."
he is telling his friends in utah that they have zero say in who is president, so they shouldn't vote for harris.
and, i love him, but i think that line of thinking is really damaging.
if the stakes were lower for this election, then sure! i'm all in favor of third parties, and i do think that should be more normalized. it would be great to get to a point where we have more viable options than just democrats and republicans.
but this election is against trump. if trump wins, we get project 2025.
this isn't your father's republican party that just wanted to lower taxes and have more free trade. we are looking at rights being taken away for several marginalized communities. major changes that will set us back decades. there is too much on the line, and harris needs every single vote she can get.
saying you won't vote for harris because you live in a red state and don't think your vote will count... like a vote for a third party will??
you're really just saying that you don't mind trump winning, or if you do, you aren't willing to actually do what it takes to stop it.
as for being complicit with the genocide, aren't we all? our tax money is going to the genocide. we are complicit, whether we like it or not.
and harris has openly advocated for a ceasefire! also, do you think trump won't be complicit in the genocide? do you not think he would actively support israel? i'd rather have a president that calls for a ceasefire than one who doesn't. i'd rather have a president who is willing to push back on israel than one who be pushed around by israel.
there's more hope for a ceasefire with harris than there is with trump, and that's worth something.
my friend said "when people look back at your history, don't let them see your name next to a war criminal's."
honestly? in this election, i would rather have my name seen next to harris because that shows i understood that the future of our country and the safety of its citizens was more important than my personal moral superiority.
i don't just vote to make a fucking point. i vote because it impacts people's lives.
it seriously feels like some people are okay with watching the country burn, as long as they feel morally superior.

Book Review: Tales from Faif (🇵🇬 Papua New Guinea)
[image 1: Book cover - a photograph of primary-colored baseball caps with logos "FIVE", "5", and "FAIF"; image 2: a map showing Papua New Guinea, on half an island north of Australia; image 3: a Papuan grandfather in t-shirt and shorts teaches two young children on a wooden bench outdoors, source: Viktor Pinchuk)
Tales from Faif
Author: Baka Barakove Bina, with Emily Sakepe Bina
World Challenge read for 🇵🇬 Papua New Guinea
Review
I was worried I wouldn't be able to find a Papua New Guinean author, until a search for story collections on Kindle eventually brought up this volume.
The stories are a mixed collection of modern life, village life based on the author's childhood, and three traditional legends transcribed from a local storyteller.
As a self-published book it's a little rough around the edges, but has a strong sense of humor, though at times it didn't translate across cultures or could be pretty crude (such as the story about the man's swollen balls 😅) Some stories demonstrate the reality of living in a country with over 800 languages. The legends are folklore tales of animals and mountains - I loved the vain dancing bird.
Overall, this was an entertaining collection. The humor and the modern bits keep it fresh, and serves as an authentic introduction to a complex and diverse country.
