On a dark and misty night Maomao and Jinshi (+ presumably some others) are travelling through a dark and misty forest (for reasons).

The mist grows thicker and thicker as they try to follow the paths through the forest. Things glitter in the gloom. Some of those might be hungry eyes.

And once the fog lifts - they find themselves on a path leading into a city that's not on any map and which answers to no emperor.

Aka that time Maomao & Jinshi accidentally stumbled upon Ghost City.

A little stumbling about (and Maomao having to be bodily carried away from three different food stalls and 2 herb sellers) they find themselves confronted a masked individual inviting them to join "the Lord Mayor and His Highness"'s banquet.

This night there is a party at Paradise Manor. A group of gilded skeletons are dancing a jig, ghosts wail in harmony, while around the room gods and old monsters are seated amongst each other, while ghost ladies carry platters and pitchers (a fair number ending up at He Xuan's table, of course).

The mortals are seated, food is brought - "for the lady, some of His Highness' Bright Moon Shining stew?" - and Jinshi really would like for his cat not to happily taste her dinner, pause, then devour a bowl of poison that could knock out a ghost king, and devour it with relish.

Maomao is a polite girl. She politely asks to thank the maker of such delicious toxins in person, and is escorted to the host couple, seated on a dais - a something in red that seems to like to look almost likd a man, and by his side? By his side is His Highness, a being so beautiful that even Jinshi pales by comparison - and when she politely asks for a cooking lesson?

Jinshi's a few steps behind, seething with jealousy and off his game at this strange, foreign court, while Hua Cheng watches his husband adopt yet another wayward human into his collection.
