"If parents call colleges freaked about their FAFSA data being leaked, schools may have to issue statements — which would reach a whole lot more families about how warped this is.
Organizing isn’t always calling electeds. Sometimes it’s just calling people with a bigger megaphone."
If you are a student or have a child who is a student who so much as applied for FAFSA Musk now has any information you submitted. You should call the schools and freak out at them about it.

Hey, student loans payments are coming back in October, you should know about the SAVE plan.
this is america-centric but pls spread this around if you think any of ur mutuals could use the info.
If you're currently shitting yourself thinking how you're gonna start making student loan payments again, I suggest taking a deep breath, first off. Get comfy, put on some music and strap in.
If you got your student loans through the Federal Student Aid program FAFSA, then you can apply for an IDR (Income Driven Repayment plan) called SAVE.
what is SAVE?
This got my $115 monthly payment down to $40 a month, if you don't work or you can't afford much, this has the potential to reduce your payment even further.
Alls you need to do is go to https://studentaid.gov/idr/ and log into your federal student aid account, there's a section for both first time applicants and returning borrowers who previously may have had an IDR.
Even if you've done an IDR before! Look into the SAVE plan!! It forgave about 10k of debt for me!
Anyway, first time applicants can click the first option, "Apply for an Income-Driven Repayment Plan" and just go through and answer all their prompts, make sure you have all your financial information on hand (tax returns, most recent pay stub, etc) and go through the prompts until it gives you the option to apply for the SAVE plan. CLICK IT!
It should let you know at the end exactly how much you'll be paying per month and you should get an email confirmation as well. Any account specific questions should be directed to their call center +1 (800) 433-3243
GOOD LUCK AND BE PATIENT, THE SITE IS SLOW AS SHIT.
DON'T GIVE UP! I BELIEVE IN YOU!!
if you have any questions feel free to DM me btw

Hello lovely bitches! I need some advice 🥲
Basically, the FAFSA fucked me over. They didn’t fix their algorithm to account for modern poverty and inflation, and I’m currently ineligible for Pell. This is an issue because—spoiler alert—I’m poor! I am financially eligible for Pell! I’m contacting FAFSA and my local senators about this really grave computer error.
Is there anything I can do financially to help save money in this time? Or at least anything I can do to freak out less 😅
Darling, we are SO PROUD OF YOU for contacting your reps and the FAFSA people. That is exactly what you should be doing, and it's not easy so good on ya. Let us know how it goes.
Other than that, this is everything we know about paying for school:

Also, the comments are open if anyone else has ideas!

So I spent four years of highschool doing everything I was supposed to do to get accepted to a community college, because I knew that even with federal grants I could never pay for a better one, only for it all to get taken away my freshman year?
cool.

Department of Education Website going down
Hello Tumblr
I realize this is just a rumor in a week full of rumors and worry, but through a friend in the Department of Education, I have been informed that the Dept of Education website is going down tonight and there isn't a firm answer as to when the website will come back up. Any grad students on this site might want to download their most recent submitted FAFSA application just to be safe.

On the Dept. of Education
So, I see two kinds of people arguing online against shutting down DepEd. The first are those who have little to no idea what it actually does — the ones hysterically asking how anyone could want to just close every public school in America, or such.*
The second are those who do know what it primarily does these days — Federal student aid for college (processing the FAFSA, distributing Pell grants, Federal student loans, etc.) — and defend it on those grounds. And the more those people go on about the catastrophe that would befall so many American colleges and universities were that Federal money spigot to be suddenly shut off**, the more I want to post that Krieger meme from Archer.
*For those who don't know, such as our non-American readers, US public schools are primarily run and funded at the local level, by local school boards with local taxes, mostly property taxes; secondarily by state level education laws and policies, and only a distant, tertiary role for the Feds.
**Particularly if the people, like those at Cato and Mises, who have been arguing for years that it is primarily said Federal grants and loans that have allowed universities to grow the tuition and fees they charge faster than inflation for decades, are right.

College Age Children of Undocumented Immigrant Parents. Why I'm concerned.
Hi friends. It's @perryavenue author of Sweet Dreamers the undocumented!Blaine AU fanfic from many years ago. I hope you're all doing well.
The article below comes from Immigrants List, an organization devoted to immigration reform and stopping anti-immigrant policies.
As the children of immigrants reach college age, many of them who are US citizens (because they were born here) are eligible to apply for need-based financial aid through the US government, local governments, and institutions. To do so, most have to apply using FAFSA (see below).
However there is a huge amount of fear in the immigrant community right now. Many worry that if either or both of their parents is undocumented, the act of filing a FAFSA risks revealing information about an undocumented parent to the federal government, leading to possible deportation.
Thus, they are put in the awful position of having to decide between their futures and potentially being separated from their parents, should Trump's deportation threats become reality when he takes office next week.
In the article, they're seeking donations. If this is something possible for you and if this is an organization you would like to support, great. If not, that's okay, too. Stay engaged, and I'll be posting updates periodically. Thanks!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
From Immigrants' List.Org
As the deadline to submit FAFSA, or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid draws near, students with undocumented parents are faced with a difficult decision. Filling out the application would reveal information about their undocumented parents’ immigration status that can put them at risk of deportation under a Trump presidency. While on the other hand, such mixed-status families are mostly lower-income and would benefit greatly from student aid.
The Higher Education Act “prohibits using data for any purpose other than determining and awarding federal financial assistance”. However, in the Trump administration, FAFSA data may no longer be protected under this act. During Trump’s first term, he expanded the surveillance and monitoring of immigrant data, which has allowed ICE and DHS to create a database of immigrant’s personal information.
Under Trump, ICE has obtained vast amounts of personal data, such as credit history, insurance claims, phone number accounts, wire transfers, driver’s licenses, etc., to be used for deportation cases. DHS has created a biometric database to aid in facial and iris recognition. FAFSA data might be the next to be harvested for Trump’s mass deportation plans.
Students who have undocumented parents shouldn’t have to decide between receiving federal aid and risking the potential deportation of their parents. Anything you give to Immigrant’s List will go towards ensuring no one’s personal data is being used to deport them, or their loved ones.
