so i was inspired by @rvbrarepairweekdos to see what the least common ships on ao3 are but i couldnt really find a good way to sort that so. i made a spreadsheet.
nothings really all that surprising, but theres some interesting stuff here! such as:
there are 194 ships with only 1 tag. the most surprising to me was lopez/simmons. youd think there'd more than just one, with the actually having a pretty interesting canon dynamic and all. the one that hurt the most is temple/tucker........ i mean i know im also not writing it but T-T
the highest ship that made me go "huh?" was delta/maine at 66th. i guess guns for hire was very popular, wasnt it.
wash is absolutely the fandom bicycyle; he has the most tags, the most ships, and the most unique pairings.
grimmons is 1st in terms of number of tags, which puts simmons and grif and 3rd and 4th, respectfully, but in terms of ships theyre all the way down at tying for 14th. grimmons makes up 94% of grif and simmons' tags. the next highest ship for grif and simmons after grimmons is simmons/wash at 49th and grif/tucker at 54th. people really dont ship those two with anyone else, huh!
tuckington makes up ~47% of wash's tags and ~73% of tucker's tags. he also only has ~64% of the amount of ships wash does. free my boy tucker he deserves to slut it up.....
andersmith has the largest discrepancy re: number of tags to number of ships, going from 49th to 32nd (+17). other notable differences are simmons going from 3rd to 14th (-11), allison going from 27th to 39th (-12), south going from 16th to 7th (+9), and caboose going from 14th to 6th (+8).
there are 210 M/M ships, 116 M/F, and 43 F/F. M/M has 8253 tags, M/F has 2481, and F/F has 659. the most popular f/f ship is south/ct, coming in at 13th, with kimball/carolina close behind at 14th. the next f/f doesnt come until 45th with carolina/grey. not a very sapphic heavy fandom are we...
this was gathered using this page on ao3 on 8/9/2024. the data i have is based on how many TAGS a ship has, not how many FICS it has. some people tag their fics with the same ship in multiple ways. i dont really have anyway to sort that out with the method i used. is there a better way to get data about ships? maybe! but this was made MOSTLY just because i had so much fun playing with the data and spreadsheets and organizing. im probably gonna keep playing around with the sheet bc i have fun with data but im not sure if im going to add more ships in. maybe like a year from now. i dont really have a good way to clean the data except semi manually so.

Rockstars - James Hetfield x F!Y/N
When two legendary bands collaborate the fans' theories appear…James and Y/N are the center of backlash and mystery at their band's new song. The countless articles and media posted by outlets are enough to drive a normal person mad..but how do they deal with it? but are they really that far off?? Do the rumors bring them together or tear them apart?
1996
Another paper with some bull on it, I throw it off to the side. The newspaper falls back on the page I was just frustrated about.
“Hetfield and Y/N Dating or friends?” The bold text displayed on the top of the page followed by a picture of me and James in public. I step on the Paper ruining it in my outrage. Why do people want to pry into our businesses!? We don't do anything to them and yet they still do this just because they feel like it.
Ever since our bands worked together on a song non stop rumors have been circling around about me and James dating. They piss me off every time! We just did one song and did a few interviews together. Nothing gave people a reason to ship us like we’re some sort of Barbie dolls in a playhouse. We’re grown people with our own lives besides our musical endeavors.
“Someone’s mad huh?” I hear his deep growly voice from behind me. I quickly turn around to see James leaning on the door frame watching my whole fit about the paper. I sigh walking up to him. I met his gaze. The gorgeous blue eyes looking me up and down. He gives a little chuckle still clearly seeing how mad I am wadling over to where he is.
“I can't take these stupid rumors anymore James! We are not Dating!” He knows why I was making such a big deal out of the newspaper now. His lips contort into an “O” shape. He runs his calloused hand through his short dirty blonde hair.
“You have to stop reading into that shit, Y/N we both know it's not true so why let other people judge you for it?” he sounds really reasonable. I sigh, walking back to pick up the damaged newspaper to show him. I hand him the paper so he can see.
“I'm not reading into it when it's shoved in my face 24/7!” His eyes widened at the detail the person went into when writing this. He gets a look of disgust, the blue irises widened.
“See!? I'm not deliberately looking at it. It's everywhere! You don't see Our guitarists or drummers getting this kind of treatment?” I get even more agitated. I pace around in small circles. This is my personal life! Not the world’s and I'm sure James thinks the same right now. He drops the paper back onto the ground shaking his head
“People are weird as hell man, ya can't trust papers like that anymore” he says walking into the room, sitting down on the stiff burgundy couch. This is kind of like a break room in our studio, we all go here to have a beer and joke around about things that make us feel like crap. Y’know like what friends do. My band and Metallica share the same recording building this is where we met back in 94’ and where we decided to work together. Our song went number one in the US for what seemed like forever. Constantly getting recognized and complemented on for the song, I thought it was an amazing opportunity. I still think it is and I don't regret it but the paparazzi and press have made such an enjoyable thing for us burst with hatred and anger.
I sit down next to him. A weird silence over takes us. He steals a quick glance at me before looking away.
“Yeah uh- i guess we’re not used to it” I roll my eyes trying to confide in him. Me and James have been the closest out of our mates. The frontmen and rhythm guitarist have a lot to relate to each other. I cross my legs, the subtle tension not leaving. Why did we go silent so quickly? I ask myself in my head.
“ it's alright, we both know the truth and that's all that matters” he gives me a goofy smile. I admire his perfectly set features again. Loving the way his muscles on his biceps contract at the movement of his arms. The black dress shirt buttoned down way too low exposing some of his chest hair and his exposed toned flesh. The sound of his cowboy boots tapping on the carpeted floor. The tension leaves my body still looking at his. Ever since Metallica had come out i always loved their music. The heavy downpicking as the dominating and crushing riffs played out. Thrash kings, they deserve that title. He takes out a cigar rummaging around his pocket for a lighter, eventually finding one he pulls it out lighting the cigar taking a puff off it. The gray cloud evaporates into the air.
“But still it hurts seeing all this about us” I rest my head on his broad shoulders. The scent of musk and wood comes off of his person. It captivates me and oddly wants to bring me closer to him. He puts his arm around me doing exactly what I wanted, bringing me closer to him. He opens his mouth like he wants to say something, nothing comes out though. Still that weird silence that we can't seem together over being this close to each other.
“Like i said before Y/N, this isn't our fault and we shouldn't be bothered by it” he squeezes me. I giggle, giving him a playful poke to stop.
“yeah i guess, sorry i had to bother you about it” I get off of the couch reaching out my arm for him to take. He takes it getting up, our close proximity still not falterning. Our eyes once again meet. He brushes his fingers through my hair, not looking away from my eyes.
“James i-” My words get interrupted by another male voice. This one is more soft and higher pitched.
“Hey I heard you guys were in here and-” Kirk walks into the room stopping dead in his tracks. I back far away from james giving Kirk a death glare. I feel the redness heat up in my cheeks. I look down avoiding both of their gazes feeling extremely embarrasses by this. Me and him were doing nothing! Nothing at all. I shouldn’t be panicking because nothing happened right? Fidgeting with my rings on my fingers usually helps me but even now that wont help.
“Oh! I did not think you guys were a thing”
“We’re not!” Me and James say at the same time yelling at poor Kirk. He has a look of confusion like were lying straight to his face. He raises an eyebrow at us not beliving the actual truth.
“We dont like eachother like that kirk, its just professional thats all!” I reassure him trying to not make attention to this. I dont want the rest of our bandmates to see us making a scene like this and blabbering to the people around them, that will definitely he;lp our case about the rumors.
“Yeah i believe you..what am i an idiot!? Its clear you guys have a thing for eachother but dont want to admit it” He looks at us with a stern expression “I dont care that much because its not my business, i was just wondering if you guys wanted to come with me and Lani to dinner”
“Dinner? Like today?” he nods “We got booked for this really lavish restaurant and we have two seats open for you and james that is if you want to go?”
I get the courage to look at james, he shrugs his shoulders kicking his feet with his hands in his jeans pocket.
“I mean i could go it depends on what the princess wants to do” He smirks teasing me. My brows furrow at his stupid remark. Princess? Really? Since when did he call me princess? I click my jaw grunting to myself.
“The princess will go if her servents going” I eye him. Pilfering his smirk to my face. God that look of utter despair makes me want to laugh at him so bad.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=
A couple of hours later…..
I look at the clock as I'm finishing up getting ready for the outing. It's not a date. Me and James and Kirk and his…wife… okay maybe it's a date!
I Put on my necklace the metal glistening in the dull light of my apartment. I sigh giving my dress a tug. The sage green dress falls all the way to my ankles hugging me tightly. The v neckline surrounded by intricate forest green lace with white beads scattered on it. The tool coming to the floor from my waistline. I do a quick twirl feeling so enchanted in the dress, like im a disney princess.
I Hear a knock at the door, its probably james. I eagerly open it. Theres james in an all black suit with golden cuffs. Holding a buquet of flowers. Specifically red and white roses some of my favorite flowers also my favorite scent to put on. I take them from his hands feeling a sense of awe. He didn’t need to do this and yet? He still did. I smell them loving the scent. I walk into my kitchen, he follows me in as i put a vase out to plop the roses into.
“You look really beautiful tonight Y/N..that dress really suits you.” He puts a hand on my shoulder.
"Thank you James uh- you look really good too. Very dashing" He smiles bowing In Front of me. his hand on his heart
“Only the best for m’lady” he reaches his hand out grabbing mine. “This is so stupid” He mutters to himself as i giggle
“Aww don't stop, you're so cute like this! I have my own knight in shining armor huh?” His smile never fades. He nods taking me out of my apartment
~
“So Kirk and Lani couldn’t make it?” He opens the door for the restaurant letting me go in. The smell of herbs fills my nostrils. The marble detailing on the ceiling with a gigantic painting. The lights on each of the tables glow with a warm tone, crystals adoring them. The rustic pillars separate us from the luxury dining hall. Members of the high class and their spouses are seen sitting in almost every single seat eating high quality food. The waiters dressed in black suits with a white undershirt and freshly combed and slick back hair deliver even more of the food to each and every one table.
“Nope they had plans i guess” He responds not making eye contact with me. We approached the host. He eyes us thinking why some rock stars are here to eat. Probably assuming we’re gonna trash the place throwing drugs and alcohol everywhere because that's a positive stereotype of us!
“Hi we have a reservation under the name Hetfield” He tells the man. The glare doesn't go away at all. Wait did' Kirk say he made the reservation? Then why is it James' name?
“Ah yes right here sir” His professional tone leads just into the dining hall. I feel all the dirty looks and scowls coming from the high and mighty. I ignore them just wanting to sit down and eat. The host shows us a table for two pulling out our chairs so we can sit. Me and James both sit down. The host is gone in one second already helping the next set of guests to their spot.
“Wow isn't this awso-”
“James” I cut him off in a condescending tone. “Kirk and Lani were never coming, right? You set all this up so me and you can be alone huh? Kirk was your wingman? “ James’s eyes widened before he turned his head away from me avoiding my gaze. I see the slightest hint of blush on his cheeks. He shakes his head laughing.
“You caught me, damn it. I thought this would have worked out” He looks back at me softening his features.
“That would have worked on a groupie not me..but its sweet thank you for taking me out” I put my hand on his, interlocking our fingers. I lean in giving him a quick but meaningful kiss on the lips. He just sits there slack jawed. I lift his chin up with my pointer finger
“Your quite a charmer hetfield, i like that in a man”
“Im glad im the man in front of you then”
“I'm glad too” The waiter approaches us asking for our drinks and yet me and James still never look away from each other. Our relationship will never be professional again. (and Thank God)

Ukrainians are making good use of those F-16s. A Ukrainian pilot flying one set a new record for shooting down cruise missiles.
For the first time in the history of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, a Ukrainian-operated jet shot down six Russian cruise missiles during a single mission in December, including two with the aircraft cannon, the Air Force claimed on Jan. 7. The interception reportedly took place during a mass Russian aerial strike on the morning of Dec. 13, 2024, which saw Russia deploy almost 200 drones and 94 missiles. "For the first time in the history of the Fighting Falcon, an F-16 fighter jet destroyed six Russian cruise missiles in one combat mission," the Air Force Command said on social media. Ukraine has received a number of U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets from the Netherlands and Denmark, deploying them multiple times in air defense roles during Russian mass strikes on cities and infrastructure. "They say that even Americans couldn't believe you did it," Air Force Command spokesperson Yurii Ihnat said in an interview with the pilot, whose identity was not revealed.
While F-16s are not practical for shooting down smaller drones, Ukraine has displayed skill at neutralizing larger missiles launched by Russia.
Real life in Ukraine makes Top Gun seem lame.
The aviator said that he approached a group of cruise missiles and, despite their electronic warfare countermeasures, managed to lock on to targets. The F-16 reportedly shot down one pair of Russian projectiles with medium-range missiles and then another pair with short-range missiles. Ukrainian F-16s are equipped with four air-to-air medium-range and short-range missiles. Without missiles and low on fuel, the pilot was then recalled from the area but spotted another missile heading toward Kyiv. He moved to intercept it and opened fire from his aircraft cannon against the projectile, which was flying over 650 kilometers per hour, a difficult and risky maneuver, the Air Force said. "A few bursts from the cannon — and an explosion... then another one! 'A secondary detonation,' I thought, but, as it turned out, there were two missiles," the pilot said, adding he did everything as taught by U.S. instructors. According to the Air Force Command, Ukrainian pilots have learned how to shoot down missiles with aircraft cannons in simulators in the U.S. but have never attempted it during actual combat before.
When a malicious dictator is trying to erase your country, you have incentive to get things right the first time.

1957: The number one song for the year was All Shook Up by Elvis Presley, who had just purchased Graceland. Wham-O released the first Frisbee toys for sale and the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 kicking off the Space Race.
Meanwhile, the folks at Eglin AFB, FL decided to create a display on the flight line of the U.S. Air Force’s operational aircraft. It’s a pretty crazy list of aircraft.
Counter-clockwise, the aircraft are (top center) B-36, B-52, KC-135, B-47, B-66, B-57, F-100, F-102, RF-101, F-89, HU-16, C-130, KB-50, C-124, in the inner circle are (upper left) RC-121, F-94, F-86D, T-37, F-86D, T-37, F-86H, F-84, and KC-97.
Just look at how big that B-36 is compared to the rest!

On Achilles and Patroclus Hail Aeacides and Menoetiades, ye twain supreme in Love and Arms.
Text of unknown authorship, it's number 143 of Book 7 of the Greek Anthology. This is the translation by W.R. Paton.
Something about being together in love and in war. Something about sharing your most vulnerable side and your most destructive side. Something about the love implicit in the idea of a loyal comrade-in-arms. Something about how it's not Achilles who is supreme, but Achilles and Patroclus. It isn't a greeting hail to Aeacides (Achilles, descendant of Aeacus), it's a greeting to Aeacides and Menotides (Patroclus, son of Menoetius).
They're one, Your Honor. Their ashes are one. Together in life, while they love and while they destroy, and together in death, forever one as, as Patroclus said, they were raised in Phthia.
NOTE: This extra part is just to avoid anyone coming to warn me about how I shouldn't use a modern lens on their relationship and stuff like that, so if you're not interested in it, ignore it. This is the Greek text:
ἄνδρε δύω φιλότητι καὶ ἐν τεύχεσσιν ἀρίστω, χαίρετον, Αἰακίδη, καὶ σύ, Μενοιτιάδη.
The word for love "φιλότητι" has a wider meaning than necessarily romantic/sexual love, although this is one of the meanings. According to the Cambridge Greek Lexicon:
φιλότης φιλότης ητος dial.φιλότᾱς ᾱτος f.[φίλος] 1 friendship (betw. persons) Hom. (betw. states or sim) Hdt. And. (personif) Friendship Hes. 2 love (betw. two people) Od. Sapph. Thgn. Pi. According to LSJ:

Th. 224 .(φιλία is the common prose form.)
Anyway, I don't really care if the author wanted to refer to friendship or them as a couple (they were known both ways in ancient times), I just care that they love each other. Friends, family, lovers, they are still one.
Also, I think the term for Arms is "τεύχεσσιν". Hence the "Love and Arms". At least, that's what it seemed to me searching online dictionaries.

Trying to add more information to the Maria Robotnik's Fast Track AU.
The first post didn't really have much information regarding the AU, so hopefully this next post can add more too it. A little justified since I just made the AU pretty much.
This one will attempt to... well... add more information to it, mainly ideas for the paint schemes, tracks and a few other characters as well.
Paint scheme ideas.
I orginally said ideas for the cars, but I actually ment to say paint schemes, since the cars themselves are 90s NASCAR stock cars.
I also headcanon that they're specifically based on the CES prototype cars seen here:
Yeah, they're pretty much the same as the cars from the regular arcade game, just with a more basic look and without the rear tires popped out.
Anyways, I don't need to explain Maria Robotnik's car, since I already mentioned that her car is literally the player's car in Daytona USA. Specifically the AT colors. You've all probably seen this car before, you know what it looks like.
Now... onto the others...
Melody [LAST NAME SPOILER]: #13, Scorpio Plasma
The sponsor is a reference to the one seen on the normal level car from Daytona USA 2, while the number is a refrence to the Hornet's number in Daytona USA Deluxe/CCE.
Helen: #67, Chaos Cola
Frances: #68, Chaos Soda
Just felt like Chaos Cola and Soda should be sponsors really. Plus, Sonic X is mostly based on the Adventure-era games, so it'd fit.
Princess Elise: #06, Balance
This one I brefly mentioned in the last post, but the car is pretty much one big Daytona USA Deluxe/CCE reference, as the #99 Balance car is one of the cars that you can drive in the game. The number is a pretty obvious nod though.
Sara: #93, SEGA
This catgirl's sponsor is the company that made Sonic themselves! I know that Sara is a gamer in some of the OVA's scenes, so I thought her sponsoring a video game company would fit. The number meanwhile is a reference to Sonic CD's release date (1993). The Sonic OVA does have Metal Sonic in there, so it makes sense to me.
Hope Kintobor: #14, SOAP
Hope's number is ment to be a reversed version of Maria's number, and the sponsor is based on the SOAP Shoes ad seen in City Escape.
Molly: #58, Emerald Notwork
Sponsor is just another reference to an ad seen in City Escape.
Merlina: #00, Phantom Full Force
The sponsor is a reference the one seen on the hard level car from Daytona USA 2.
Sage: #51, Eggman Empire
The number is a nod to Roudy Burns' number in Days of Thunder, and I figured that Eggman would definelty sponsor his empire on the car, he is a narcissist afterall. And to fit with the retro vibe, the Eggman Empire logo could be the same on seen in Sonic 2 down below.
Claris Sinclar: #16, Oriole
Helen Cartwright: #2, Max
Like Elise's car, these two cars are playable cars in Daytona USA Deluxe/CCE. Though, they actually have the proper numbers of course.
Hatsune Miku: #01, Greatsmirk Racing
I mentioned this one in the previous post, but for those unaware, the sponsor is a parody of Goodsmile Racing, something that Miku is commonly assosiated with. The number is a reference to to the number seen on Miku's shoulders.
Neptunia characters and paint scheme ideas (if they actually appear).
I'm still unsure if they will actually appear here, but Hyperdimension Neptunia was published by SEGA, so it's still a possibility. Regardless I'll tell you the ideas for their cars anyways.
Neptune: #91, Nep Bull Noire: #94: Lastation Racing Vert: #1, Leanbox Labs Blanc: #81, Amazoo Delivery Service (It's a FedEx-like company instead of an Amazon parody here) Uzume Tennouboshi: #7, Sleepcast Pillows Nepgear: #27, Gallop (Another car from Daytona USA Deluxe/CCE) Uni: #53, TSA Tools Rom and Ram: #3, Star BLUE and #4, Star RED
The Tracks.
The tracks are pretty straight forward, they're mostly existing tracks from Daytona USA and Virtua Racing. And while they don't really matter in this AU, I did mention before that this could work better as a fangame, so track list is as follows:
The tracks from Daytona USA and Daytona USA Deluxe. (Three Seven Speedway, Dinosaur Canyon, Seaside Sreet Galaxy, National Park Speedway, Desert City, and Silver Ocean Causeway)
The tracks from Virtua Racing. (Big Forest, Bay Bridge, and Arcropolis)
The Beginner Course from Daytona USA 2. (SEGA International Speedway)
Florida International Speedway (a parody of Daytona International Speedway)
Speedianapolis Motor Speedway (a parody of Indianapolis Motor Speedway)
Other Characters
Alright, time to introduce other miscellaneous characters.
The Mobians (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, Ray, Shadow and Amy Rose), Madonna, and Dr. Eggman.
The crew from Sonic The Hedgehog of course, as well as a scrapped human character from the Tokyo Toy Show build. They all utilise their classic designs to fit with the overall 90s vibe the AU is going for.
Currently, Shadow is the only modern-era mobian included in this AU. He will have a custom "classic" design to fit with everyone else.
Sonic and his pals (and Shadow) usually hang out and have their own adventures outside the race track, but they also hang out near the garages and watch the cars zoom by. Sonic and Tails also often help out in the garage or within the popcorn booths as well. While Shadow goes to see Maria.
Amy Rose and Madonna work as race queens, they do race queen stuff, nuff said. (And yeah, the idea of Madonna being one of the racers is retconned now.)
Dr. Eggman isn't really an evil mad scientist here, he's more of a goofy nuisance who likes to cause trouble while still being a self-centered narcissist like in canon. To sum it up, he's JP Eggman with elements of Dick Dastardly if he were the owner of a race team instead of a driver.
Tom West and Mr. Virt McPolygon.
The race announcers who work for SEGA Sports Channel, you can probably guess what they do.
Tom West comes from Daytona USA 2 while Mr. Virt McPolygon comes from Virtua Racing.
And that's all there is to this semi-extended post about the AU. Now I'll admit, there still isn't much here, but then again, like I said in the previous post, there isn't really a "story" for the AU by any means.
Anyways, like always, you can ask me things about it, or do the designs for the race outfits and cars if your interested in doing that.

Okay, so I finally got around to all the responses given for the Random Whump Questions google form I made! Everything is ranked from highest to lowest in terms of what was picked, and the number beside them is how many people chose that option:)
Also, to make sure it's not longer than it needs to be, I'm going to do the open ended questions in a separate post:) Let me know if you'd like to be tagged for that!
One more thing to keep in mind. The 'custom answers' section is where only one person has brought it up. If multiple people have said the same thing, then it will be included in the main answers :)

The Animorphs are planning a trip to the Yeerk pool! In Animorphs # 17, The Underground, they must dig a long tunnel in mole morph. Let's help them plan out their trip with math! Their tunnel is dug in shifts and at a downward angle. On their return trip, they must dig out a turn around point and then ascend to the surface. I will share my solutions in a week or so if anyone is interested on trying out a solution of their own.
Note: On pages 94 & 95, it turns out the Animorphs frequently encounter rocks they must go around and at about 25ft deep they luckily find a cave and can stop digging. For simplicity we will pretend they can just dig in a straight line to their destination.
a) Given their 2 hour time limit in mole morph, and assuming an average walk speed, w, what is the maximum length tunnel they can dig while being able to safely return to surface?
b) On page 93, Ax, Tobias, and Marco discuss how long it will take them to complete the tunnel. They estimate that the Yerk pool is 50 feet below ground and that for every 6 feet of tunnel, they dig 1 foot down. Assuming they can maintain this ratio, how much tunnel will they need? Hint: Sin(θ) = 1/6
c) Given the length of tunnel required to reach the Yerk pool, what is the minimum walk speed required for the Animorphs to be able to safely walk down the tunnel and come back in time to demorph?
d) Rachel is the first person to start digging. She gets off to a rocky start but for simplicity, let's assume she begins to dig the tunnel immediately and continues until it’s time to return to the surface. They decide to take one hour shifts (page 91). If Rachel digs at a rate of r feet per second and must walk back up the length of the tunnel in 1 hour, how much tunnel length can she create? Solve symbolically (don't put in numbers just yet).
e) According to various pest control companies online, moles can dig at a maximum rate of about 15 inches per hour. Using this rate, and the walk speed estimated in a), how long is the tunnel from d)? (Plug in numbers now :) )
f) Hardest (but most fun???) The Animorphs take shifts digging. They must descend to the bottom of the tunnel, dig for some time, dig a turn around point, and finally ascend back to the surface. If they must return to the surface in 1 hour, what is the length shift N can dig? Note that each shift spends less time digging due to the extra tunnel length they must traverse.
e) If nothing had gone wrong >_> and the Animorphs were able to dig in a straight line, how many dig shifts would it have taken for them to dig 50 ft deep?
I don’t expect anyone to attempt a solution but I’ve been thinking about this all week. This is the only way I can put my mind at ease.

With her book The Return of Martin Guerre (1983), the historian Natalie Zemon Davis, who has died aged 94, attracted a wide readership and inspired future historians. It came out of working as a historical consultant on a film of the same name released the previous year, starring Gérard Depardieu and Nathalie Baye, and directed by Daniel Vigne.
Martin Guerre, a peasant farmer in the 16th-century Pyrenees, left his wife Bertrande to go on a journey, only to have his marital role usurped by an impostor who “returned” pretending to be him. After some years of cohabitation, Bertrande denounced the impostor, her testimony seemingly confirmed by the return of the real Martin Guerre. The impostor was duly tried and executed.
The film-makers’ questions about period detail and behaviour intrigued Davis. But other aspects of the movie genre troubled her, so she went back to the archives and wrote up her own compact account of 120 pages.
A gripping narrative and a lesson in method, Davis’s book raised questions about the reliability of evidence and the motives and worldviews of peasant men and women from a faraway place and time. It is an example of a microhistory, where historians turn away from the big canvas of kings, queens and battles to understand ordinary lives, often through a highly localised case study.
The Return of Martin Guerre was one of a series of works including Society and Culture in Early Modern France (1975), Fiction in the Archives (1987), Women on the Margins (1995) and The Gift in Sixteenth-Century France (2000). Davis’s trademark was the longer essay or biographical study, often focused on marginal or misunderstood personalities, all spiced with a sharp attention to issues of religion, gender, sex, class, money and power. Historical records for her were never dull: she once described them as “a magic thread that links me to people long since dead and with situations that have crumbled to dust”.
Born in Detroit, Natalie was the daughter of Helen (nee Lamport) and Julian Zemon, a textile trader, both children of east European Jewish immigrants to the US. While studying at Smith College, Massachusetts, at the age of 19 she fell in love with Chandler Davis, a brilliant mathematician and socialist activist; they married in 1948 and went on to have a son and two daughters. Her first degree, from Smith (1949), was followed by a master’s at Radcliffe College (1950).
Her life with Davis was productive and fulfilling but also complicated her early career, as his principled stances against McCarthy-era restrictions on political expression led to both him and her being barred from a number of posts, and from travelling abroad. This she needed to do for her doctorate on 16th-century France.
After finally gaining her PhD at Michigan University in 1959, Davis went on to hold positions at Toronto, moved in 1971 to the University of California, Berkeley, where she was appointed professor, and in 1978 to Princeton, retiring in 1996. She became only the second woman to serve as president of the American Historical Association (1987), and the first to serve as Eastman professor at Oxford (1994). In 2012 she was appointed Companion of the Order of Canada, and in the US was awarded a National Humanities Medal.
Davis helped establish programmes in women’s studies and taught courses on history and film. Her AHA presidential address, History’s Two Bodies (1988), summed up her thinking about gender in history. It was also the first such address to be printed with illustrations. Her book Slaves on Screen (2002) was one of the first in-depth treatments of this topic by a professional historian.
In her last two books, Davis returned to the exploration of mixed identities. Trickster Travels (2006) was about the 16th-century scholar Leo Africanus, whose complicated Jewish and Muslim roots in North Africa she expertly unpicked. Listening to the Languages of the People (2022) focused on the 19th-century scholar Lazare Sainéan, a Romanian-Jewish folklorist and lexicographer who published one of the world’s first serious studies of Yiddish, but had to abandon his Romanian homeland for Paris in 1901.
At the time of her death, Davis was completing a study of slave families in colonial Suriname: it is hoped this will appear under the announced title of Braided Histories. In this way she continued to explore unconventional topics, going against the grain of Eurocentric history and looking instead at the boundaries of identity and belonging in very different settings.
Visiting many universities and research centres in her retirement, Davis encouraged younger scholars by conveying the potential of history to inspire empathy and hope for change. While at my own institution, the University of Amsterdam, in 2016, she made it her main aim to talk to students rather than to other professors. In 2022-23 she presented her latest work in online seminars, and wrote and corresponded actively until shortly before her death from cancer.
Chandler died in 2022. Natalie is survived by her three children, Aaron, Hannah and Simone; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Stanley.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that they allegedly shot down 81 Russian missiles out of 94 launched at Ukraine
Today, 13: 5853
https://en.topwar.ru/255640-vs-vsu-otchitalis-o-sbitii-81-rossijskoj-rakety-iz-94-zapuschennyh-po-ukraine.html
Today, the Russian Armed Forces carried out another massive attack on enemy targets deep in Ukraine's rear. According to Ukrainian media reports, the greatest damage was inflicted on the country's western regions. At the same time, the Kyiv authorities report significant damage to energy infrastructure, and Zelensky described today's attack on his social network as one of the most massive since the beginning of the conflict.
Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine published an official report on the results of repelling the above-mentioned attack. The report states that Ukrainian assets Defense managed to shoot down 81 rocket out of 94 launched.
It is worth noting that earlier the head of the Kyiv regime Zelensky wrote about the same number of downed missiles on his social network, adding that 11 targets were intercepted with the help of American F-16 fighters.
In turn, before the missile attack, the Russian Armed Forces carried out a strike on enemy targets using drones-kamikaze. However, in this case, the report of the Ukrainian command looks much worse.
Thus, the Ukrainian Armed Forces report that the Russian military launched 193 UAVs at Ukraine, of which only 80 were shot down.
It is worth noting that the results of the Ukrainian air defense against our Geraniums continue to deteriorate. This is probably due to the depletion of stocks of Western anti-aircraft missiles, which the Ukrainian Armed Forces command is “saving” for more serious and dangerous purposes.
At the same time, earlier сообщалось, that Ukraine has come up with a “cheap way” to combat Russian kamikaze UAVs. Kyiv has already asked the United States to transfer Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, equipped with 7,62 mm or 7,50 mm machine guns and capable of firing Stinger anti-aircraft missiles.

Victorian Railways T class
Deniliquin and Moama Railway Company No.1 with Mixed Train, at Deniliquin on the Opening Day, 4 July 1876.
The Victorian Railways T class, they were built from 1874 to 1885. The class started with 2 pattern engines from Beyer, Peacock & Co. in Manchester, England. Theses 2 engines where a passenger type 2-4-0, and a goods type 0-6-0, they become Victorian Railway’s (VR) numbers 98 and 125. No more of the classes where order from Beyer, Peacock & Co. by VR. The class in total had 23 engines.
continued below the cut
But the newly formed Deniliquin and Moama Railway Company (D&MR) order 2 of the goods class in 1875 and D&MR would order 2 more in the next 2 years. The 4 engines owned by D&MR would get larger timber cabins for crew comfort and given tenders with 6 wheels. They were fired by the local redgum instead of coal. D&MR was apparently fitted with a diamond shaped funnel with a screen in it to help reduce the chance of fires starting from the cinders.
A decade later would see Solomon Mirls the newly appointed locomotive superintendent of VR, suggesting that 18 more engines based on the design of No.125 with modifications. Phoenix foundry in Ballarat, Australia was appointed the contract for the class. Theses engines were given the odd numbers from 249 to 283, from 1884-1885. The class was given the classification of the T class. The class looked like the 4 the D&MR ran.
class T no.94 built as No.265, Newport Railway Museum unknown date.
Between 1901 and 1906, all of engines of both the T and F classes, except class T No.281, were reboilered with a new design incorporating Ramsbottom safety valves and a boiler pressure of 160 psi (1,100 kPa) increased from 130 psi (900 kPa).
The engines were withdrawn from 1915 to 1953, as newer engines were taking their places. 5 where scrapped in 1916, Two were sold; No.279 in 1915 to Baxter & Saddler for track construction in South Australia and No.267 in 1921 to the Kerang and Koondrook Tramway. On the Kerang and Koondrook Tramway, No.267 was unofficially named "Bucking Kate" until withdrawn in 1951 and returned to the Victorian Railways. the fate of No.279 is unknown. The 4 owned by D&MR were acquired by VR No.1, No.2 and No.4 were transported to the Bendigo railways workshops and broken up. D&MR No.3 was a part of the 1924 engine renumbering scheme becoming the new No.96. 6 other engines in the class were renumbered from No.90 to No.95.
Museum Collection – Newport Railway Museum
16 more of the class were scraped between 1926 to 1933. The last 2 engines of the class No.92 and No.94 where modified, had their central driving wheel flanges removed retaining the outer sets and had their tenders replaced with ones from Baldwin W Class engines. They were withdrawn from service in 1953 and No.92 would be scrapped. No.94 was saved and cosmetically restored for the 1954 Victorian Railways centenary and was displayed at Spencer Street Station in its original lined Brunswick green livery and with a funnel taken from a withdrawn NA class locomotive. After the celebrations, it was placed into long term storage. In January 1962, it was donated to the then new Australian Railway Historical Society Museum (now the Newport Railway Museum) at Newport, Victoria and become one of the first exhibits at the museum. Sometime after this, the centenary funnel was swapped with a larger one from NA class 12A, at an unknown time.

Okay, going through Tumblr's year in review posts for 2024! Let's see how things I like did!
Top 24 of 2024: The big hyperfixation of the year, Baldur's Gate 3 came in number 6! Also posted stuff for Doctor Who for the most recent season, in at 20. I believe since this is from October, it also includes last year's specials?
Ships: F for the lack of Bloodweave, which I was almost certain would place. The only BG3 content was Astarion/Tav at 40 (a rise of 48 positions) and Durgetash at 67. I did reblog some of the latter. Spirk came in at 33, reblogged a little. Griddlehark dropped two places to 42, we'll call that steady. Without a that-year release, poor Zelink dropped 33 places to 45. Korrasami clings on with its nails at 100 even.
TV shows and TV characters: Doctor Who rose eleven places to a very respectable 4, and... yeah that's all. For characters, the Fifteenth Doctor came in at 44, followed by the Tenth Doctor at 51 and Donna at 55 and Fourteen at 57. Ruby debuted at 76, and even Rose showed up at 83 despite not appearing in anything.
Movies and movie characters: Lord of the Rings made it to the top five, rising four places to 3! Goncharov dropped 27 places to 30th, which is still hilarious considering. Everything. Three Star Wars movies placed - Revenge of the Sith at 50, Rogue One at 84, and A New Hope at 98. The Lost Boys dropped 12 places to 88. For characters, Anakin was way at the pointy end with number 3, presumably thanks to Ahsoka. Luke was at 12, Leia at 29, Padme at 31. Darth Maul showed up at 60, Han at 64, Yoda at 90, and Cassian at 95. A solid eleven characters from Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit showed up too.
Celebs: David Tennant rose two spots took the top place! Ncuti Gatwa rose 84 places to hit 8, Catherine Tate hit 36, and Millie Gibson hit 73. Gillian Anderson hit 92, and Jodie Whittaker dropped 13 spots and just clung on to the top 100.
Books: "This list is brought to you by Tor Publishing Group, which you’re probably familiar with, given that this is tumblr dot com." Yeah... yeah. Locked Tomb dropped to 4, alas. Please, Tamsyn... Alecto release date... please... Dracula dropped 4 spots to remain in the top ten at 9. Animorphs dropped thirteen spots, but still picked up 36. Only a top 50 here, pensive emoji.
The only anime/manga I watched or read was Mononoke, and that was too recent for these lists. Ditto characters. For the Dungeon Meshi enjoyers on my dash, six of the top ten characters are from it.
Video games: OKAY NOW WE'RE TALKING. BALDUR'S GATE 3 NUMBER ONE. Take that, Genshin :D TS4 remained steady at 12. Tears of the Kingdom came in at 30, Breath of the Wild at 35, Echoes of Wisdom at 65, Twilight Princess at 87, and Ocarina of Time at 97. Flight Rising dropped a single spot to 41. Interestingly, TS3 rounded it out at 100!
Video game characters: "Honestly? We brought this list back out of our own need to know whether Astarion or Gale would come out on top." So many BG3s <3 Astarion did indeed hit number 1, Gale at 5, Shadowheart at 6, Karlach 8, Lae'zel 9, Wyll at 12, Halsin at 16, Tav at 19, Gortash at 47, Minthara at 55, and Durge at 67. For Zelda characters, Link was at 18 and Zelda at 56.
Web series: Dracula Daily dropped to 21, Re: Dracula to 38. Still solid results, considering this is the third year of Dracula Daily and a second year for Re: Dracula!
Web celebs: It was definitely Hatsune Miku's year. It's Miku's world, we just live in it. There's a bunch of TTRPG people here (will we ever get a new season of NY by Night? Uncertain), lots of Vocaloids, and Fucking Chocolate Guy at 39.
Musical acts: Hozier came in at 18, which is fine because I have not stopped listening to Too Sweet. Queen came in 28th, Pink Floyd at 94.
The 'Blrs: I think the only one I actively participated in was Simblr? Came in at 9th. Like I wrote but didn't consider myself part of Writers On Tumblr, etc. Some interesting ones here, will check some of them out later, I think!

HANDLER LOG
Main Handler: Westley Santana #30716
Other Handlers: Nathan Carrigan #10818 (BANNED from handling 032994's training as of 21/02/19, see Entry #8)
#1 Mentoring Nathan Carrigan #10818. Allowing Nate to oversee parts of '94's training, with supervision obviously. '94 bit me during medical examination. W. S. #30716, 11/08/18
#2 Wiped today, immediately after signing. Aggressive and violent behaviours still present, despite expected disorientation and memory loss. Somehow '94 still thinks something is wrong, though '94 doesn't actually seem to know what it is. Working on it. Will send '94 to be wiped again if necessary. W. S. #30716, 01/09/18
#3 Initial buyer dropped their offer because it's taking too long. '94 is still aggressive and violent. Waiting on the go ahead to train '94 as a Serv. Need more of those but mostly need to see the little fucker taken down a peg. W. S. #30716, 28/12/18
#4 Designation changed from Comm to Serv. Muzzle removed due to promisingly good behaviour. W. S. #30716, 03/01/19
#5 Wes got attached and decided to buy '94. I think he just likes the challenge. Additional notes made to info form by Wes. N. C. #10818, 05/01/19
#6 '94 managed to break Nate's pointer finger. '94 is now muzzled until further notice. Do not let '94 trick you into sympathy. '94 will bite. W. S. #30716, 17/02/19
#7 Wiped again due to violence. It didn't help. N. C. #10818, 18/02/19
#8 Nate nearly killed '94. Will no longer mentor him and will ban him from interacting with '94 in the future. Recommend extending Nate's probation, if not firing him outright. Luckily '94 is unscarred and should heal completely within the next month. W. S. #30716, 21/02/19
#9 Think the near-death experience scared '94. '94 is much more obedient and willing, and though still has bouts of aggressive behaviour, is no longer violent. Working on it. W. S. #30716, 07/03/19
#10 Emotional suppression training is going exceptionally well. Almost proud now that '94's stopped being a mouthy little fucker. Shock collar has been removed. W. S. #30716, 29/03/19
#11 Had a panic attack during training. '94 immediately responded and stepped up to assist. Unplanned, but shows how much progress '94 has made. '94 is extremely eager to be doing something helpful, though this means that leaving '94 alone causes anxiety and restlessness. However, as a side effect, '94 is consistently grateful to see me and has begun to ask for tasks unprompted. Useful. W. S. #30716, 14/04/19
#12 Training completed to my standards. Bringing '94 home today. W. S. #30716, 25/04/19
#13 Darling '94 remembered previous name. Had to bring in for a wipe. Unfortunate. W. S. #30716, 08/10/19
