something something time travel something something Extinction Avatar Jon AU
[ID: The first panel is of a man tilting his head up as if taking a deep breath, saying, "Ha." The second panel is of the man looking straight ahead and laughing, hence, "Ha ha ha ha ha HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!" The text becomes more jumbled and incoherent the more he laughs. The third panel is a view of the man from the front. He looks up menacingly at the reader, his right eye's sclera a blotch of red with a tiny scribble of white in place of his iris, and his left eye a bright iridescent green. An illusion of an eye hovers over his forehead, left cheek, and throat. He says, "Oh, Jonah. You just made a terrible mistake." End ID.]

*thinks about how I need to clear out my clothes so I can properly sort my new ones and take care of those I won't wear anymore*
*realizes Halloween is coming up and I have that whole week off*
*realizes I've got a lot of mix and match pieces I can put together for costumes*
I wonder if I can dress myself up as an avatar for each of the 15 Fears in The Magnus Archives...

oh tma is nipping at my heels. i miss the extinction
#admittedly almost all of my love of the show now is FOR the extinction and that is bc the idea of this nascent burgeoning embodiment of--#--the apocalypse seeping into reality and ppl walking into raw ugly glimpses into it is SO good. it is so interesting to me#like the way the extinctions influences from other entities is so much more obvious than the other fears bc it is still a baby and still--#--more Blended into them than the others which have established themselves enough in humanitys fears to have shit like avatars and--#--beasts. god !#gary boylan as this proto avatar where HE was not the victim but instead him+his obsession was the weapon wielded to obliterate others#<-- how freakyfun is that. he pokes around and ends up running w the cult of the lightless flame for a bit mistakenly thinking That is-#--what happened b4 both him and jude both have this epiphany and realize theyre dealing with something WAY different. if jon annoyed jude--#--just a tiny bit more she wouldve sent him to gary instead of mike lol#very funny that almost every extinction detail is crystal clear in my head but i just had to look up judes name bc i forgot it. all is ash-#--except for the extinction and a couple of funny jon moments in my memory#hope that tma2 has some extinction stuff in it bc the resolution for it in tma1 was SO boring. what do you mean a baby suddenly elevated--#--to the power of every other fear in The Change just became a fully formed and functional entity. so much missed potential there of the--#--eye not properly predicting the effect its ritual would have on the extinction bc it is a thing which CANNOT be known bc it isnt even in-#--existence yet. all seeing rather than all knowing you know. an inability to predict the future

Since I got into both The Magnus Archives and Vampire: the Masquerade, I found an interesting connection
Vampires in vtm are meant to be terrifying monsters that are the opposite of humanity, and there are 14 Clans, so it makes sense that the each could reflect a different primal fear that humans have, sorted into the 14 Entities (plus Thin-Bloods and the Extinction for fun)
Tumblr media
Banu Haqim: The Hunt - The Banu Haqim are known as “the Clan of the Hunt” and are known for being assassins, which mirrors the idea of chasing and hunting that this fear focuses on. The Blood Addition Bane also fits well with the addiction to the Hunt that its avatars often experience. The Hunt is also attached to law enforcement and often uses justice to motivate its avatars, which is a core focus of the Banu Haqim
Gangrel: The Slaughter - The Gangrel originate as a warrior clan from Ennoia, which relates to the Slaughter’s attachment with the fear of war. The Gangrel’s Feral Impulses also matches well with the blood lust and raw aggression that the Slaughter induces and feeds upon.
Hecata: The End - The Hecata’s obsession with Death makes them a clear connection with the fear of the finality of death and all things morbid and dead. The Hecata’s necromancy can be related to the items of cheating death such as the Catalogue of Trapped Dead and the animated cadaver
Malkavians: The Spiral - The Malkavians loose attachment to sanity and their visions that cause them to lose grip on what is real ties in very well with the Spiral’s themes of insanity and lose of reasoning. Their compulsion of Delusion aligns almost exactly with the Spiral’s twisting of perception and warping of what is real. Malkavians also have a symbolic attachment to mirrors and distorted reflections, which is also common with the Spiral
Nosferatu: The Eye - The Nosferatu’s habit for being silent observers and spies aligns itself to the passive, watching nature of the Eye and the fear of anyone being able to see you at any time. Their compulsion towards collecting secrets also fits with the Eye since it revolves around secrets known and uncovered, something the Nos specialize in. They themselves also experience a fear of being seen because their horrid appearances can often break the masquerade or lead to ridicule
Ravnos: The Vast - The Ravnos are travelers and wanderers that countless move across the world, which fits with the Vast and the idea of infinite possibles and expanse. Ravnos being dare devils also fits with the fear of heights the Vast induces since they will preform dangerous stunts and acrobatic tricks.
Toreador: The Stranger - The Toreador are often the most human looking out of all vampires save for their extreme beauty which is almost outside of what is humanly possibles, which is very similar to the Uncanny Valley and the “almost-human” quality of the Stranger. Toreador are also tied closely with music, dance and theater, which are all symbols used by the Stranger.
Tzimisce: The Flesh - The Tzimisce are the legendary Fleshcrafters, inspiring fear of horrible monstrosities of sinew and betrayal of the body, which is basically the definition of the Flesh. Taking a piece of someone’s body can also be used as an anchor or a grounding object (Jon’s rib), which aligns with the Tzimisce and their Possessiveness.
Venture: The Web - The Venture’s need for control and their constant politicking makes them a perfect fit for the Hidden Machinations, which deals with the fear of being controlled or manipulated. Them being (supposedly) at the top of vampire society also fits with the fact the Web always had the upper hand and was behind most of the events in TMA.
Brujah: The Desolation: The Bruja’s strong passion and Violent Temper align well with the fiery devotion of the Desolation and its avatar’s general disposition. Their compulsion of Rebellion and desire to “burn down” systems of control also fits with the destructive nature of this fear.
Tremere: The Buried -
(This one is the one I like the least and was a hard fit, so I may move stuff around in the future). The Treme’s pyramid smothers the people inside of it with hierarchy and leaves them trapped in the system, aligning with the metaphorical suffocation and entrapment of the Buried. Their Bane of Perfectionism also presents as a “crushing” expectation, which would fit with the Buried on a more conceptual level.
Lasombra: The Dark - This one feels pretty self explanatory but the Lasombra’s cold nature fits the descriptions of the Dark and its icy waters. The Dark also has a cult and ties to religious beliefs as it uses ignorance to control people, which is something the Lasombra have strong ties to. Their Bane of Ruthlessness mirrors how coldly cruel many Dark avatars can be such as Rayner trying to kill and posses a child.
Ministry: The Corruption - The Ministry and the Corruption both deal heavily with temptation, as the Hive sings its song of love, safety, and pleasure to its victims in the same way the Serpents do. One of the nicknames for the Ministry are the Corruptors
Duskborn/Thin-bloods: The Extinction - The Duskborn are the newest of the Kindred clans and the Extinction was said to be a new development as a fear. They both are signs of the end of the world, with the Extinction’s full manifestation being said to destroy humanity and the Thin-bloods connection to Gehenna.
Salubri: The Lonely - The Salubri being isolated due to propaganda and hunted to near extinction makes them a very Lonely clan. They also have ties to being slightly more peaceful, as the Salubri tend towards nonviolent hunting methods and the Lonely very truly killing its victims.
Anyways, once again feel free to critic this or pose any additional supports for any of these categories.

Some Magnus Archives fanfic ideas....
1, The Archivist was never a Beholding adjacent position - there's nothing about the Eye that demands it's servants to record their knowledge. Instead, the Archivist was an ancient, general purpose collector of fears, always meant to gather and immortalise them in stories. Jonah Magnus (like many avatars of many different Powers before him) just hijacked the concept for his own uses and now everyone assumes it's how things are supposed to be.
1.2, All Leitners are written by Archivists. After consuming enough stories about specific Fears, an Archivist has to get them out, expelling all the gathered fear and coagulating it into single point - traditionally, in books. Aka, unbeknownst to him, Jon's recordings work a little like Leitners.
1.3, Simon Fairchild is the only one old enough to remember a time when an Archivist had no special connecting to the Beholding.
1.4, A time travelling Jon resorts to drastic measures to make sure he can't be used for the Watcher's Crown again, and permanently mutes himself - and gains for his troubles an obsessive compulsion to write eldritch books.
2, Post ep. 200 Jon and Martin end up somewhere else - back in time, alternate reality, in another fandom, whatever. Jon is still the Archivist and he still has the urge to archive, to listen and to record. But knowing what they do now, both are of the opinion that using tape recorders is a Big No. Aka, Jon ends up using vinyl records instead (and thus courting the Spiral instead of the Web??)
3, Jon asks a very important question I really wished he had: why does Gerry, with all the experience and knowledge he has, get eye tattoos on all his joints? Do they do something? What do they do?? Which then leads Jon down a very different sort of path of Being Marked By Horrors. Aka, Jon starts getting magical tattoos to balance and counteract the various Dread Influences on his life. Aka, Tattooed Jon Being A Distraction To Everyone and Also Mucking Up Elias' Plans By Having A Closed Eye Tattooed On His Forehead Maybe???
3.2 Better yet, this becomes a Trend in the Archives and everyone outside the Archives comes to the conclusion that the place is ran by some sort of delinquent gang of tattooed hooligans. Tattooed Martin for the soul, anyone?
4, Jonah/Elias Sees everything there is to see and figures it all out long before Jon and Martin make it back to London. Total extinction of human race looms not in unfathomable distance but less than hundred years in the future, and it turns out that in absence of human free will, the Fears grow... quite boring and repetitive, really. Jonah wanted Immortality to See It All, and this... isn't it. So, time for a retry. Aka, Jonah time travel.
4.2, Jon, Martin and Jonah all end up back in time after episode 200, and immediately Jon and Martin scramble to stop Jonah - not realising that he's already changed his mind about the Watcher's Crown, and is, in his own way, on their side.
5, Mr. Spider's door is flung open and the Archivist stumbles out, right in front of traumatised little Jon Sims. Aka, Eldritch Eye Monster tries to raise his own younger self to make better decisions than he did and probably only makes things worse.
6. All the above.

Extinction martin sounds so cool?!?! I imagine he wonders a lot of ghostowns or places that have been struck with large scale natural/man made disasters. Might also add a bit of the Lonely because depending on radioactivity he could do some serious damage if he were to be around people :)

A crack theory appeared in my mind after listening to ep 20 and I felt the need to share.
The 5 OIAR empolyes represent Jon across the 5 seasons of tma.
Season 1 is Alice, playing the skeptic hoping that closing her eyes and stuffing her ears will make everything go away. Both her and Jon dismissed the stories they came across, making up excuses.
Season 2 is Sam. He's now accepted there's weird stuff going on, and he's determined to investigate and find out what's happening. Sam's determined to find out the deal with the Magnus institute, Jon wants to know if the people around him are safe and to be trusted. (I'm not super sure on this one*)
Season 3 is Gwen. Knows a bit more now, but isn't fully in on it yet. She's having run-ins with the externals just like Jon with the avatars, and I've seen some people drawing parallels between her encounter with Bonzo and Jon's with Nikola. (Also makes me think that Gwen will figure out what's mostly happening by the end of the season since we got full confirmation about the fears mid way through 3. It'd be cool if Gerry will be the one to tell us.)
Season 4 is Celia. She thinks she knows how everything works pretty well by now, except something unexpected comes along. She thought she knew the way the fears worked, but she might be realizing that things aren't exactly so simple, just like how the extinction came in and messed with the avatar classification that Jon thought he knew.
Season 5 is Lena. She's in on it, an insider. She's more cryptic, not making a lot of sense to those that don't know as much (so, basically everyone). She has a questionable morality, no one knowing whether her intentions are good or not, just like Jon who started smiting not for protection, but for revenge. Also if I'm remembering so many people are just..confused like 70% if the time Jon talks.
*Tbh Sam is the one I'm most hesitant on. Colin might also work for season 2 (he's def got enough paranoia), but we don't know if he's actively investigating. High possibility that he's the stand in for season 2 Jon, and Sam's just another thing entirely.
Anyway...good podcast

post-unknowing, martin took up smoking because the smell reminded him of jon :]
[also the whole correlation between cigarette smoke and lonely fog <333]
what if martin and peter were never actually avatars of the lonely and they just hit that vape all day every day and never actually did any work related to the extinction and the watchers crown or any of that bullshit

ASOIAF ATLA Au bc I saw a JJK one and was mesmerized
Dany is the avatar this is not up for debate. Born into the disgraced former imperial family of the fire nation, she shows signs of being able to bend other elements but never acts on them because her opinion of herself is too low and she doesn't believe she could be the protector of the world. After Drogo dies she fully unlocks her earth bending during his funeral ceremony while creating the pyre and everyone's like omg Miss Avatar. Then continues on with her heroes journey/bad roadtrip to take back her throne. The zuko parallels are everything to me. Yes she still brings back the dragons cause they were (thought to be) extinct in ATLA too
Jon who thinks he's a non bender (and Ned prays he is) until him and Robb are play fighting in the yard one day as kids and he accidentally burns his brother's eyebrows off. Still goes to the Wall bc could the fire and ice symbolism even be more in ur face. Most of the wildlings distrust him for his destructive abilities but he learns to control himself and becomes a symbol of light and life instead of destruction when he becomes a leader (Zuko parallels AGAIN babey).
Arya is a water bender who completely rejects learning about healing because she thinks it's so fucking boring. Syrio starts to train her and she starts to develop her shifty and quick fighting style that most trained benders find confusing. Learns ab blood bending while on the run and is Understandably Horrified. The faceless men force her to learn how to heal. They also force her to use her blood bending more so she's not having a great time rn.
Sansa is an incredibly talented healer for her age, but has no idea how to fight because "ladies aren't supposed to do that sort of thing." Forced to heal Lannister soldiers while stuck in the capital, though she just wishes she could let them die. ALSO unlocks blood bending due to this and is also quite unnerved. Forced to pose as a non bender in the Vale.
Bran the water bender who is devastated when it can't be used to heal him after his fall. Starts getting really into the spirit world, increasingly noticing raven spirits that no one else can see. Meera and Jojen (she's the swamp bender kind of water bender and he's a highly spiritual non-bender) take him north of the wall where the harmonic convergence takes place
Robb is an earth bender like his dad (Starks were originally a purely water bending family but started to marry a lot of earth benders) and he's well trained and good for his age, but that doesn't save him from being 15 and making poor decisions. Really heartbreaking as this desperate teenager tries to keep up with more experienced enemies as they attack him from all angles at the Red Wedding
Tyrion is now both a non-bender and a dwarf, which makes him doubly disgraced in Tywins eyes. Has to prove himself through his intelligence, being useful on the battlefield by creating the plans for benders and soldiers. Always has a lot of snarky comments about benders but always dreamed of being an air bender
Jamie and Cersei are both fire benders. Cersei used to spar with Jamie as children but Tywin quickly put an end to that and she was essentially forbidden from using her bending. Jamie is one of the best benders of his generation, and even years after the fact, Cersei still deeply resents him for being the prodigy she never had the chance to become
Cat is a water bender who was a pretty decent healer who patched men up after the war, but didn't really use her powers too much once she got married, because she didn't have much reason too. This bites her in the ass during the Red Wedding when she can't properly defend herself, and once Lady Stoneheart rises, she becomes a blood bender who is going to use her powers to their full extent this time around.

I got 2 friends into TMA and I’m slowly finding my reason for existence. Anyways hi, welcome back to “hearing a random persons thoughts on TMA S4” I’m your host, that random person!!
MAG 146: Threshold
I love it when TMA brings statements that have a different perspective on a situation or have a callback to something like 120 episodes ago (aka MAG 27)
Also is it just me, or is Helen’s laugh starting to sound more like Michael’s?
MAG 147: Weaver
Jesus Christ, hill top road is just cursed. Literally avoid it. Forever. Annabelle’s statement was chilling. Girls breaking the fourth wall and I support it!
“Can I call you Jon?” WHY does everyone say that, just fucking call him Jon. I guess it’s because his official title is “Archivist” by like everyone but still. Oliver Banks said it earlier. Nikola said it but towards Elias instead but still. It’s kinda funny that Jon seems to be the center of The Web in some way considering his childhood trauma with Mr. Spider and all that.
MAG 148: Extended Surveillance
YEAH BASIRA BEAT HIS ASS. Also is it just me or did he sound a lot more panicky? Like he usually sounds calm and collected but when Basira was beating the shit out of him, he actually sounded a bit different. Also, he calls her detective like other people call Jon archivist which may be important, I don’t know. Is she an avatar of The Eye? Is everyone who works at the institute an avatar of the eye or is it just Jon and Elias?
Jon’s mini monologue at the end got me rethinking my perspective on him and all the avatars like Jesus Christ.
MAG 149: Concrete Jungle
Brazil mention ‼️‼️ anyways, my first thought was The Stranger because y’know, vaguely human like things appearing as human but not human. Y’know? But yeah, The Extinction could also be it. I want to know more on Adelard Dekker. Was he an avatar?? is it The Web because he did use the table back then to trap one of the Notthem.
Also Georgie!!! Yay!!! I haven’t brought this up yet but it’s been floating around my mind: Georgie cannot feel fear. Like she can’t feel it. And there’s entities that feed primarily off fear. So. Is she gonna do some important shit? She has to
ALSO THE STATIC NOISE AND MARTIN DISAPPEARING I HATE THIS STOP. KILL ME.
Okay that’s everything! I feel so useless when ever I can’t connect anything but I guess I’m on episode 149 and we’ve already explained most of the major plot points throughout the podcast (keyword: most) so what’s left to connect? Still pisses me off. I want something to dig my hands in.
If there’s something I’m missing, gimme a hint so I can comb through transcripts like the good ol days

TMA POKÉMON CARDS IDEA MASTERPOST
So the Pokémon themselves will be the named avatars
And the types will be replaced with the fear, their associated color, and a lil icon
Eye - green - eye
Lonely - deep blue - ship/cloud
Vast - sky blue - parachute
Spiral - rainbow as fuck - spiral
Web - grey - spider
End - dark purple - chess piece
Buried - deep brown - the coffin
Stranger - ??? - theatre mask
Flesh - bright red - meat or something
Corruption - sickly yellow - hive
Slaughter - deep maroon - knife
Hunt - ?? - large cat or some shit
Dark - black - ??
Desolation - Orange - fire or Agnes’ headdress
Their moves will be associated with the powers that their avatar status gives them
Jon - Ceaseless Watcher (flip a coin for big damage, can be used once)
Martin - Good Cows (healing), Let The Fog In (debuff), Kill Bill (resets cooldown of another card OR deals big damage, long cooldown)
Simon - Enjoy Sky Blue
Prentiss - It Sings (general poison effect), So Very Afraid (hits multiple cards like the worm-splosion)
Agnes - Burning Love, Intertwined (siphon health or smth)
And like Pokémon cards, certain types are weak to others
The Eye is weak to the Dark (you can’t see in the dark now can you)
The Stranger is weak to the Eye (being perceived and known very much hurts the I Do Not Know You)
The Web is weak to the Desolation
Everything is weak to the Extinction (ultra rare master card or some shit)
The Vast and the Buried cancel each other out (they both do less damage to each other)
The Hunt is weak to the End (more theoretical, as the Hunt is everlasting and the End contradicts that)
But uh yeah I’m just gonna add more whenever I think of it, and if yall have ideas reblog with them so I can have more to obsess over

i think jon as the first fully fledged extinction avatar could be fascinating. the extinction wasn’t fully realized before the grand ritual, because it didn’t have enough time, so it was still kind of a growing baby fear that hadn’t truly branched off and become its own separate thing, but under the right circumstances it could have become its own fear. but jon’s final decision at the end of the podcast (ignoring the last minute switch when martin got involved because i don’t really like it) was to destroy humanity in its entirety. mass extinction. most humans who aren’t in an end domain are in a state where they would view their own deaths as a mercy, but with the eye’s penchant for beaming horrible knowledge into people’s heads, i feel like if jon did go through with his plan, people would be at least partially aware of the mass eradication of their species, and that’s very different from just their own deaths. we do also know that there are occasional extinction domains with nonhuman creatures feeding off the ruins. so, if jon did manage to execute his plan, he would be the catalyst for exactly the type of mass extinction event to cause the extinction to be fully realized.
