I wish I could like the direction taken with RWBY as a whole. Initially, it was pretty neat. I'd say I actually liked Volume 4 for several reasons. However...I have to admit that after like the second half of V5, I began to kinda feel that weight shift. I don't mind a "save the world" plot, especially since I'd say the first pieces of that were pretty neat. A little messy, but neat. But the more time passed and more volumes went on, the more I felt like maybe this wasn't entirely the best idea. RWBY and squad being the main pushers for the plot, I mean.
Don't get me wrong, the team gradually getting more direct experience and saving established cities and towns on the road feels like it could have been cool to keep on. While I don't mind the concept, it feels like the plot ended up way too big for what we had for a little while. It didn't feel like a gradual escalation to me, it felt like a very haphazard acceleration to get to the bigger things, and it ends up partially making some of the later volumes' priorities and motion feel off. Not to say the characters can't have any respite between victories or failures, but sometimes it leaves me feeling confused. Especially in the case of V7-9. Certain points speed up and others slow down to accommodate some decisions made (Ironwood being the final villain of V8 will always feel weird to me when Salem is literally there). Structuring issues, really.
It's like the plot wants to go fast and also take it easy at the exact same time, so character and plot priorities end up kinda screwy. Not to mention how it makes the characters, protagonist and antagonist, look when the volume goes on.
...Man, I wish the show was structured better.

We all know the semi-canonical ‘all the Robins know to hide/duck inside of Batman’s cape, even as adults’ thing.
We also know that Danny ‘is LITERALLY a ghost’ Fenton sucks at remembering his own intangibility while ALSO forgetting to look ahead of him.
All I’m saying is, Danny Fenton (or Phantom, if you’d really like) would absolutely SLAM into Batman on accident while running on roof tops and Bruce ‘Brooding Instinct’ Wayne doesn’t even think twice about letting the kid hide and scanning around for danger before there’s a record scratch of ‘wait who tf is this?’ kicks in.

Eternal Bonds: Tim and Danny’s Infinite Realms Marriage
In the Infinite Realms, marriage is an unparalleled commitment. Unlike the mortal world, where love can be fleeting and easily undone, marriage in the Realms is something far more sacred. It’s not just about vows or ceremonies—it’s about merging souls, creating a bond that not even the vast stretches of time can sever. The very idea of marriage in the Realms is rare, almost mythical, because it requires two beings to love each other so profoundly that they’re willing to bind their very existence to one another.
For the ghosts and entities that reside in this realm, eternity isn’t just a poetic idea—it’s a reality. Time is meaningless when you’re no longer alive, when your very essence is bound to the afterlife. And because of this, relationships are viewed through a different lens. There’s no such thing as divorce, no “time apart.” Once a couple is bound, their souls are intertwined forever. To dedicate your entire being—past, present, and future—to another means accepting that their joys, sorrows, triumphs, and failures will be yours too. It’s a partnership where breaking the bond is simply impossible.
It’s why marriage is such a rare occurrence in the Realms. The ghosts, who have already lived one life and often seen the frailty of mortal promises, don’t enter into this kind of bond lightly. It’s only for the strongest of loves, for the most steadfast of commitments. Because once you marry in the Infinite Realms, that bond holds through eternity itself.
And yet, despite the gravity of it all, Tim and Danny find themselves willing to make that very commitment. Tim, a mortal tied to a world where things end, where nothing lasts forever, steps into the unknown. His love for Danny is so deep, so unshakable, that he agrees to a traditional Infinite Realms marriage. He knows full well the weight of it—he’s not just vowing to love Danny in this life, but in every life after. In swearing to this bond, Tim is offering his entire being to Danny, for now and all of eternity.
For Danny, this choice means even more. As a halfa, he exists between two worlds, knowing both the mortality of the living and the permanence of the ghostly afterlife. His love for Tim is powerful enough that he’s willing to make this eternal commitment, knowing that there’s no one else in any world—mortal, ghostly, or beyond—he would rather be tied to. For Danny, the bond is as natural as breathing. It’s a connection that deepens their relationship in a way that transcends the limitations of their two worlds.
Their marriage isn’t just a declaration of love—it’s a merging of souls, a binding that makes them two parts of the same whole. It overwhelms them with the sense of safety and belonging that they’ve both craved in their lives. In each other, they find the kind of love that doesn’t just endure life’s difficulties but thrives beyond them. Their bond ties them together forever in a way that no one else could understand, but to Tim and Danny, it’s everything.
They are each other’s home. And in the Infinite Realms, there is no greater honor, no stronger connection, than to be bound by love for all of eternity.

I love how extreme found family is in one piece. Like they took supernatural line of "Family don't end in blood" and actually made good on it. Because it's not just that the crew found each other even before that only really very briefly Robin, Usopp and Luffy could say that anyone biologically related to them raised them.
Like Luffy had Garp and that's his grandpa but he also had Makino and Shanks and the red hair pirates and they were a family unit and he also had Ace, Sabo Dandan and the bandits and they were a family as well and it's never who mattered more to Luffy or who actually raised him cause they all did. It'd be hard to put him in a nuclear family structure because so many people fill the same roles in his life in different ways and that's great like Kung Fu panda said "that doesn't mean less for one parent it just means more for Luffy"
And that's the thing I think sometime fandom can get very obsessive with trying to pin down who is whose surrogate father/mother how do they fit in the nuclear family structure and while that's fun and there's nothing wrong with head cannon characters that way I also think it's important to remember that not every relationship needs a title or definition sometimes you are just family and that's valid too.
Ace had Luffy and Garp but he also had the whitebeard pirates and his pops same with Sabo and the revolutionaries
Zoro with Kuina and his old kendo master, that was maybe more of a rivals, mentor mentee relationship than whatever Mihawk Zoro and Perona had going on but it's all family none the less.
Chopper with Hiririluk and Kureha. Perona and Moria, Usopp with the little village boys and Kaya. Shanks and Buggy with the Roger Pirates. They might not all have had defined roles with each other but it was still family.
Just like Sanji, Nami, Franky and Law and their more defined Surrogate familes
And people like Vivi Robin Usopp and Shirahoshi who had/have their biological parents/family that love them and raised them.
It's nobody that I've just mentioned properly fitting squarely into any of these categories because it's all complicated family is complicated and its messy and it's big and everyone in your family might not have even met but it's family and it doesn't end in blood and for some people it never started there either.

Funniest thing I've seen recently, and not funny in a ha-ha way, more funny in a "the endless entropic void gnawing at my will to live" way, was somebody asking around for alternatives to Neil Gaiman, in the light of Neil Gaiman's ongoing fall from grace. As though what we're currently sitting through isn't the collapse of the carefully curated "Good Guy Neil" image that caused people to parade Gaiman as the same kind of preferred progressive alternative to, say, Rowling. As though we won't be in the same goddamn situation in a few years or months, with some number of the new progressive sci-fi/fantasy darlings- not all of them, to be clear, but at least some of them- when their impeccably-curated marketing implodes in on itself and they're revealed to be the same kind of sex pest or abuser. Can you not see the wheel to which you are strapped. The game of human pinball you are condemning yourself to with this mindset. Maybe you do see, and you're just resigned to taking it one soul-crushing disappointment at a time, one "I never would have guessed" after another. I mean I think we all need to get resigned to that one way or another, sun's gonna go out before it stops happening

IAN GALLAGHER + his journey with bipolar disorder
╰┈➤ “At times, being bipolar can be an all-consuming challenge, requiring a lot of stamina and even more courage, so if you’re living with this illness and functioning at all, it’s something to be proud of, not ashamed of." - Carrie Fisher
#happy world bipolar day to all my bp babies#(more thoughts at the end of the tags)#shameless#shamelessnet#shamelessedit#ian gallagher#cameron monaghan#*macygifs#bipolar disorder#hello pals how are we doin#i made this gif set in july of 2023 and never posted it because 1) i was terrified to share it and potentially see Bad Takes in the tags#and 2) because my hyperfixation was waning. and while both of those things are still mostly true (the fixation comes and goes)#i feel like it's really important to share as ian's bipolar storyline was not only so vital to his character it was a bit of representation#that isn't often given to the disorder and those (like myself) who live with it every single day#world bipolar day is a day where we can both celebrate ourselves and our resilience and also raise awareness of the reality of the disorder#which is both terrifying and beautiful at its core. this disease is not a death sentence or a sentence to an unfulfilled and miserable life#while there are challenges galore when it comes to balancing life with this disorder it IS possible to live a full and productive life#and i think it's really important to have representation of that in media - and while shameless dropped the ball on a LOT of storylines#over the years THIS is the one they really fucking nailed and i am incredibly grateful#i first started watching shameless while in the midst of a major depressive episode and i was later (finally) diagnosed during an extended#hypo/manic episode - this show and ian's storyline got me through so much and made me feel so seen and validated in my struggles#world bipolar day is also vincent van gogh's birthday (happy birthday buddy) who was posthumously diagnosed with bipolar disorder#and who experienced both depressive and hypo/manic episodes during his lifetime (and was regularly institutionalized)#it takes a lot of help and support to keep us going. it takes the support of our family and friends and *most* of all#it takes patience and kindness and understanding - which is so so so easy to give if you are willing to love and listen#so please. be willing. listen to our stories. be patient with us. show us love without conditions. support us in any way you can.#we are worth it#i promise#anyway. that's really all i wanted to say. happy world bipolar day to those who celebrate (me) and may all of us living with this disorder#go on to live happy fulfilling beautiful magical lives

Thinking about it, HOLY FUCK, Qrow's Semblance is wildly underutilized.
Bad Luck as a passive power can work, and it can work really well, but RWBY really decided to stick him with the most boring option of "depressed because the bad luck affects everything". It's so weird to me, since I've seen other characters with either a bad passive power or passive bad luck that still end up making their way around a situation or even using it to their advantage somehow. Qrow does neither of those.
Depending on when he even unlocked his Semblance, you'd think the years of experience with the thing existing would end up getting him to be more used to how it flows and how it works. It's supposed to affect him and everyone around him, and yet it sounds more like his semblance was unlocked maybe a year in and he's got no idea what to do with himself because of it.
On another note, the whole "bad luck" thing feels barely visible, if not visible at all. He says it's happening, he says he knows his semblance is always doing things, but it feels like there's no way to really discern if it's doing anything that wasn't already going to happen. The same thing would later be a little problem with Clover's semblance, but this ain't about him. To remedy it, why not have some kind of visual cue or subtle sound before something happens? Or better yet, have the "bad luck" be over the top or incredibly obvious in its spontaneity. Have stuff randomly break in his hands, he slips and falls for a bullshitly-placed reason, trees falling out of the blue, literally anything that's over-the-top enough to make it obvious that it's not normal per his Semblance. Maybe have him carrying multiple flasks, or knee pads, or anything because of how much random bullshit bad luck could hit him at any time.
Also, maybe put his drunken nature in relation to the bad luck. Maybe he could fight better in a drunken state so he could easily fight without having to think too hard about how to circumvent the random occurrence of events per his Semblance. The "Qrow tries not to be alcoholic" could be a later story for how he doesn't need to rely on the alcohol for him to work well with his semblance.
Dealings with luck-based magic, powers, or phenomena can be a lot more fun if you get creative in how the characters are still able to thrive with it in effect. It's just about how it gets used to their advantage. Milo Murphy is the first character that comes to mind, but regardless, it's fully possible for the luck to be fought against, weaponized, and lived with. Not to say you can't have a character be depressed about this development, but it feels like it's too late in the game for Qrow to be like this.
In short, Qrow's semblance isn't boring in itself, but it's boring and kinda disappointing that the only thing that'd been made of his semblance's existence is a depression.
.....wait, there was a Chibi episode that had Qrow's bad luck Semblance being obvious af.
The non-canon spinoff Chibi series has the most obvious occurrence of Qrow's semblance actually working outside of word of mouth mentioning that it even exists.
Fuck.

I've been toying too long with the baby girl scene it made me notice a little detail that has been heartlessly hidden from us.
Tumblr media
When Joel hugs Ellie and we only get close-ups of him pressing her against his chest, we don't know this, but we never really got to see how he, at some point, glances over her shoulder at the dead body of David with an evil eye.
Tumblr media
I guess this moment was most likely meant to be in the original scene but was probably cut out to leave the moment Ellie and Joel shared more "loving" and "soft", but damn. Looking into Joel's eyes, we can actually see just how much he's aware of what the man was capable of with such a little girl as he finally realizes what this fragile sweetheart had to go through all alone.
Tumblr media
The way Joel is stabbing David's dead body with his eyes. Knowing too well this motherfucker tried to r*pe a little girl, he regrets not making it on time to be the one to masacre him like that.

i don't think it's a coincidence that heroines and female protagonists in most entertainment franchises are depicted as extremely beautiful and a good chunk of their power is expressed primarily through their sexual prowess. it makes women correlate attractiveness and femininity with power without actually showing them what having and getting real power looks like. this "women can do both" femme-fatale shit distracts audiences from the fact that femininity actively disempowers women. it drains their finances, keeps them focused on appealing to men instead of overthrowing them (priming them to seek men's approval above their own well-being), and harms their bodies.
i promise you women being sexually attractive to men never helped get them rights or respect. not even an iota.
(also, i've noticed that these super smart, charismatic, beautiful women are always portrayed as exceptional while the women around them are flighty, crazy, stupid, helpless, dumb, hysterical and she's the one to help and liberate them from their bad looks, empty heads, and cowardice. because the narrative must show that she is an EXCEPTION and not the norm because most women really are "like that." they are an unachievable standard that is simultaneously used to bash women while pretending to lift them up. also, there's a lot of white supremacist rhetoric)
