ok i will just say this here lol. in my late teens/early 20s i had a multi year period of moderate immune dysregulation/suppression following a severe strep infection & at the time i didn't know that was the cause because i didn't know it could happen because my only knowledge of post-acute illnesses was 'chronic lyme' and the link between EBV and ME/CFS. and having now lived through four years of covid one thing i have internalised is that i previously had a massively insufficient understanding of these post-acute conditions & in fact they are a risk of virtually any acute infection (a recent study estimated flu rates around 3–4%, EBV is generally cited around 10%, novel pathogens will have higher initial rates and usually settle somewhere in this range, etc) & its sooooooooooooo fucking frustrating how many people Still do not understand this, seem to seek out zero information about it, & will reflexively call you a minimiser if you so much as state that covid is not unique for it!

if you're still boiling a character as complex as alistair down to anything along the lines of: himbo, idiot, soft baby without an idea of his own, haha funny cheese man i'm straight up burning your house down with lasers and sending you directly to hell.

if you genuinely believe that man is stupid, all you're doing is admitting that you yourself cannot see beyond the incredibly transparent veil he wants to put over your eyes.

what he is is insecure, and he wants you to think he's stupid so that he doesn't have to live up to expectations he fears he won't meet. shortly after meeting him you can call him out on using humor to deflect and make himself smaller and he ADMITS IT.

he repeatedly shows you just how intelligent he is and how aware of the ways of the world he is. his history knowledge, his understanding of the chantry and its control of templars and mages that goes far beyond nearly anyone else we as the player speak with, his emotional intelligence when it comes to understanding others' intentions and needs... and this is just a thoughtless little post with quick examples i conjured up in five minutes! i'm not even doing a deep dive here! how do so many people miss all of this?

this is not advanced reading of subtext, it's incredibly simple and i'm completely unsure how people don't understand this about him.

he's such a great character for so many reasons - his flaws being some of those reasons - but a lack of intelligence is simply not one of those flaws no matter how you spin it.

It's crazy how a completely random gentile can just lie and say "this Jew who talks about antisemitism on the left is a Zionist" and everyone just goes oh ok thanks and then dismisses everything you've said forever no matter how well thought out your posts are or how many hours you spend citing primary source evidence. One of the throughlines in a lot of Gillen's stuff is that genre shit is cool, but also awful. Wicked + Divine pairs the glory of celebrity-tinted godhood with a two-year shelf-life. Once and Future's plot is kicked off by the last monster hunters attempting to re-ignite monstrosity because they can't quit the lifestyle. Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt is a comic about how the superhero genre is still stuck endlessly relitigating Watchmen, although almost by design it's tepid in advancing a vision of what moving on from Watchmen would actually look like, and the ways in which it itself has to relitigate Watchmen in order to make this point are, again, really neat. We come to DIE, a kids-lost-in-fantasyworld epic that's about the inability to get away from our artistic forerunners, the way everything that's written is baked into the DNA of everything that comes after in a big inseparable tapestry that exists outside of time and wants to trap you in a tailor-made fantasy realm that will scour your soul with the terrifying knowledge of who and what you are as a person, or else kill you. Or something. Rapidly losing my grip on the thread of this paragraph.

Anyway what's at the core of a lot of this, in my opinion, is that we, as an audience, kind of know too much for our own good at this point. We can't unknow the inner workings of genre, we can't unsee the strings. We can't not know how incredibly bad all of this would be if it were real. We can't not know the miserable narcissistic self-centeredness of behaving like a protagonist, because we've all met someone in our lives who actually does think of themselves like one. If you meet King Arthur or Aragorn or Superman on the road, kill him. Above all you can't write anything new unburdened by all this knowledge.
