To be a cynical bastard for a minute- I like Terry Pratchett, I think Terry Pratchett was a good writer, and I think that Terry Pratchett can rightfully be claimed to have been deliberately pursuing empathetic and progressive messaging in a way that sometimes reads like straw-grasping cope when the claim is applied to other writers. But lets be real; the reason he's almost universally beloved on here, and the reason his corpus has dodged getting scrutinized to pieces in the same way as so many other nerd tentpole IPS, is that he died about a decade ago when many of us were children or teenagers, and the dead can't sully their own reputation. ok i will just say this here lol. in my late teens/early 20s i had a multi year period of moderate immune dysregulation/suppression following a severe strep infection & at the time i didn't know that was the cause because i didn't know it could happen because my only knowledge of post-acute illnesses was 'chronic lyme' and the link between EBV and ME/CFS. and having now lived through four years of covid one thing i have internalised is that i previously had a massively insufficient understanding of these post-acute conditions & in fact they are a risk of virtually any acute infection (a recent study estimated flu rates around 3–4%, EBV is generally cited around 10%, novel pathogens will have higher initial rates and usually settle somewhere in this range, etc) & its sooooooooooooo fucking frustrating how many people Still do not understand this, seem to seek out zero information about it, & will reflexively call you a minimiser if you so much as state that covid is not unique for it!

This makes me want to write a fantasy story where two characters being able to use the power of love to save each other is not a particularly cruel indictment of anyone else in the cast who died, because the narrative goes out of its way to demonstrate that everyone else involved in the story and maybe in the whole world absolutely hate each other and for very good reasons. Except these two, who actually get along pretty well in a work-friend kind of way, and thus have access to extremely basic friendship magic techniques denied most everybody else

Clementine (or Emmy when she's being especially adorable) used to be Ryen's horse, but he gave her to Peeta because she was just too much of 'a borin' dozy mare' and he wanted something more exciting. Peeta bonded with her immediately and under his care she's grown into a happy, perky little thing who's always up for a challenge. She's also a bit of a bin on legs and constantly snuffling pockets for treats - her favourites are peppermints, but she will eat absolutely anything she can get a hold of.

Though friendly with everyone, Clementine adores Peeta most of all. He dotes on her constantly and the two are rarely seen apart.

Funniest thing I've seen recently, and not funny in a ha-ha way, more funny in a "the endless entropic void gnawing at my will to live" way, was somebody asking around for alternatives to Neil Gaiman, in the light of Neil Gaiman's ongoing fall from grace. As though what we're currently sitting through isn't the collapse of the carefully curated "Good Guy Neil" image that caused people to parade Gaiman as the same kind of preferred progressive alternative to, say, Rowling. As though we won't be in the same goddamn situation in a few years or months, with some number of the new progressive sci-fi/fantasy darlings- not all of them, to be clear, but at least some of them- when their impeccably-curated marketing implodes in on itself and they're revealed to be the same kind of sex pest or abuser. Can you not see the wheel to which you are strapped. The game of human pinball you are condemning yourself to with this mindset. Maybe you do see, and you're just resigned to taking it one soul-crushing disappointment at a time, one "I never would have guessed" after another. I mean I think we all need to get resigned to that one way or another, sun's gonna go out before it stops happening

if you're still boiling a character as complex as alistair down to anything along the lines of: himbo, idiot, soft baby without an idea of his own, haha funny cheese man i'm straight up burning your house down with lasers and sending you directly to hell.

if you genuinely believe that man is stupid, all you're doing is admitting that you yourself cannot see beyond the incredibly transparent veil he wants to put over your eyes.

what he is is insecure, and he wants you to think he's stupid so that he doesn't have to live up to expectations he fears he won't meet. shortly after meeting him you can call him out on using humor to deflect and make himself smaller and he ADMITS IT.

he repeatedly shows you just how intelligent he is and how aware of the ways of the world he is. his history knowledge, his understanding of the chantry and its control of templars and mages that goes far beyond nearly anyone else we as the player speak with, his emotional intelligence when it comes to understanding others' intentions and needs... and this is just a thoughtless little post with quick examples i conjured up in five minutes! i'm not even doing a deep dive here! how do so many people miss all of this?

this is not advanced reading of subtext, it's incredibly simple and i'm completely unsure how people don't understand this about him.

he's such a great character for so many reasons - his flaws being some of those reasons - but a lack of intelligence is simply not one of those flaws no matter how you spin it.
