Anyway. These are some of the bits and pieces I highlighted while reading Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite for a variety of reasons.
The only constant thread running through my prison notebooks was a pervasive loneliness with no discernible beginning and no conceivable end. —Andrew Compton
I never doubted that ego was the last part of the organism to die. I had seen the last helpless fury in some of my boys’ eyes as they realized they were really going: how could it happen to them? —Andrew Compton
His dying body crumpled into a corner of the stall, wedged in between the wall and the toilet. His face was a red slick, featureless, blind. He was nothing but particles now, if he had ever been anything more. I had only altered the speed at which his particles were vibrating. Nothing in the universe had been disturbed. —Andrew Compton
Lush Rimbaud was a name he gave his heroin-induced self, a brain of utter clarity tethered to a body like an exquisite vessel brimming with pleasure, spiked with fury, a personality composed of liquids that could not mix. —Exquisite Corpse about Luke Ransom.
Luke began to see himself as if from a distance, a writerly part of his brain observing his own madness, storing even this for later. —Exquisite Corpse about Luke Ransom.
There was a certain diffidence I always looked for in my companions, nothing so obvious as a death wish, but a sort of passivity toward life. There have been offered in recent years a plethora of “murderer profiles,” a series of lists and charts meant to delineate the character of an habitual killer. What about the profile of an ideal victim? They exist as surely as we do, and they move as inexorably toward their given destinies. —Andrew Compton
This was how I actually did feel when they came [to arrest] me: a blind, shrivelling, sorrowful pain, the sort of pain a garden snail must feel when stepped on and cracked open, its spiralling home crushed to shards, now nothing more than a snotty smear of meat left to dry in harsh sunlight. —Andrew Compton
They’re always afraid at first. The ones who have never experienced terrible pain start out calmer, because they have no concept of how bad it can be. When they discover how much their bodies are capable of hurting, they’re astounded. When they realize it isn’t going to end quickly, they crumble under the weight of their own fear. The ones who have known pain are terrified from the start. —Andrew Compton
I always have to laugh at writers who employ the phrase Something snapped inside him as a prelude to violence. The only time I ever felt anything snap inside me was the day I decided to leave prison, a sharp immediate relief like the snapping of an elastic that had constricted my heart for years. But when I saw that first drop of blood—always, when I saw the first drop of blood—something melted inside me. Like a wall of earth crumbling and dissolving in a hard rain, like a sheet of ice breaking apart and letting a river run free. —Andrew Compton

I also bought "Exquisite Corpse" by Poppy Z. Brite (now William Martin, he's a trans man -- though as far as I can tell, his old work remains under his former name, and he doesn't seem bothered by that). I read it right after I finished "Maggie's Grave" this afternoon and this was my face basically the whole time I was reading:
Tumblr media
it's so gross you guys (affectionate). Seriously some of the most poetic, pretty, revolting gore I've ever read. Martin got into Compton and Byrne with an absolutely shocking clarity. It's awesome but it's not for anyone with a sensitive stomach. Like, if you're squeamish in the slightest, I cannot stress enough: do not read this fucking book LOL
anyway I loved it. read it in one 4 hour sitting (it's p short, less than 300 pages). great novel, it hurt my brain, Martin owes me damages. 10/10

Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite
To serial slayer Andrew Compton, murder is an art, the most intimate art. After feigning his own death to escape from prison, Compton makes his way to the United States with the sole ambition of bringing his “art” to new heights. Tortured by his own perverse desires, and drawn to possess and destroy young boys, Compton inadvertently joins forces with Jay Byrne, a dissolute playboy who has pushed…

Progress 6 // December 21st, 2023
I've been making very slow, but sure progress. And I finally got out of my reading slump. My mental health hasn't been great, but maybe if I read enough I won't notice.
Surprisingly, once I finished "Story Engineering" by Larry Brooks, I was able to read normally. In my opinion, the book was incredibly repetitive and it kept advertising the book to me, even though I'd already bought it? It just kept talking in circles, and it could have easily been half the length it was with all the same important details.
BUT, I will say that the checklists were actually quite useful, and that the last three sections were the most useful by far. And maybe this was meant for those entirely new to writing (plus, even though I knew most of it, it was nice to see it verbalized in front of me) (<- trying to figure out why it was so repetitive).
Regardless, I'd say it's not the best, but if you're new, then go for it. Skim until you get to the checklists or until you find information that's actually new to you.
Also, I devoured "Exquisite Corpse," by Poppy Z. Brite, and also learned that he is a fellow transman. I'd say it's a fun but tough read, but not for those uncomfortable with gore and heavy sex. (I'd say more but I wrote a literary analysis on this book for fun, and I am fried). I've also started reading old Batman comics from the 1940s, from the Golden Age Omnibus (vol. 1). Unsure why, but I am, so that's a thing I'm doing.
I'd also taken up reading the Bible for inspiration and things to reference. It'd be fun to incorporate symbolism (which I would have done anyway) specifically Biblical (maybe other religions would be fun as well?) So far, I've only made it through the Book of Genesis, and 2 chapters of the Book of Exodus.
I've gotten into (watching) ballet, and actually studying for my classes. Productivity!!!
As for the actual novel I'm trying to write, it's definitely slow, and I'm working through world-building and character-rebuilding (I decided that I didn't like it). I'm very indecisive.
I haven't been drawing much at all, lately :(

Oh man, I didn't know about that part of Backwards. Perhaps I should read that one first then, so I don't finish my reading of the novels on such a grisly note 😅
Backwards is such a dark novel 😭😭
I'm only halfway through. The only real bright point is Ace's homoeroticism, calling everyone affectionate, ridiculous names like Old Sausage, Old Sprout, Old Chumburger...
He calls Rimmer Old Sprout and it kinda suits Dave eara Rimmer. See below: Old Sprout....don't tell him that

Ikemen villian x Ikemen vampire collaboration of liar foxes and frivolous writers
Tumblr media
The translation can be wrong
This is the memory a little before I met Kate.
London, the capital of the UK, governed by Queen Victoria.
In this country, there is a crown, which is a loud life downstairs.
(That is us)
Last night was a bad night.
There is no protection subject under the mission. He was killed and was thrown away in garbage.
Of course, the crime is in the hand of the crown.
Therefore, it was erased from this world.
(... It's annoying now, it's sunny today)
I got a rest for a long time and hang around the city without any good.
(... Oh, this feeling again)
Walking through a lively city can be made into a feeling that only you are separated from the world.
Depending on the crown mission, you may have to take this way.
I have died more than once or twice while being cursed with curse words.
(I got used to it for that)
(I have no regrets on the road I chose)
It's not a lie.
I abandoned my dream for a "purpose".I abandoned my calm life and became a member of the crown.
I just decided to walk in the dark.
But-
Tumblr media
(Sometimes the darkness is too dark,I'm going to lose sight of myself)
I went to a familiar bookstore to deceive something.
This bookstore, which faces the passage in London, is quiet and reluctant.
(Oh, this book ... a new book came out)
(Hmm? This looks interesting too)
Tumblr media
???:"Yo, brother, do you like books?"
Harrison:"...?"
Looking at the person who heard the voice, it was in front of the bookshelf. There was a man who was there.
Tumblr media
The man's face is hidden in the shadow of the bookshelf and can only see the bright hair of London Blue.
London Blue Hair -colored Man:"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I was very seriously looking for a book, so I'm curious."
"So, do you like books?"
(What is this guy? Even though we met for the first time, he's getting really excited...)
I stare at the back of the man who is crouching.
(He's a weird guy that makes you mad, but...)
(This guy has a strange and unpleasant smell of lies that other people don't have)
That's why I ended up answering the question out of spite.
Harrison:“…I think you like books.”
Curse, I gained the ability to see the lies of others.
The world I saw with my eyes with a lie was just more lies than I expected.
Lies to commit people, lies to sell, betrayal lies, self preservation,i was painted on such a lie, and I gradually became exhausted.
In such a situation, I suddenly picked up a book that made me feel a little lighter.
I thought the world of novels, which are made up of layers of exquisite lies to entertain people, seemed kind to me.
Harrison:"That seemed like a good lie to me."
"Everyone who writes novels is a liar, i think."
Tumblr media
``But, I quite like that lie.That’s it.”
Tumblr media
london blue colored man:"Yes, that's good."
"Certainly, as you say, the writer is just a liar."
"But, I want to think that the lie is ... kind/gentle."
That’s what I want to think.”
Harrison: "....?"
London blue haired man: ``For those of you, yes! This book is super highly recommended.”
``Good-looking, sexy, and popular with girls. It’s like a book written by a popular author.”
"Oh, just be careful because the detective who appears in the work is a bad guy."
Harrison: "Huh? Hey, wait a little ..."
I was forced to hold a book and looked at the cover.
Harrison: " "Sherlock Holmes"? "
"Hey, this is..."
(That guy was ...?)
The moment I took my eyes off him, the man was gone.
It's like a summer bar.
When I returned to Crown Castle, Victor and Will were elegantly drinking wine.
Tumblr media
William: "Welcome back, Harrison."
Harrison: "Ah. You're both drinking so early.Isn't it rare for you guys to drink at this hour?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Victor: "I was considering the incident that has happened in the last few days."
"While tasting a dripping bloody wine,"
Harrison: "…event?"
Victor: "In the vicinity of the Regent Park, It seems that a corpse with a bite on the neck was found. "/"It seems that a corpse with a bite on the neck was found near the region park."
"It's multiple, named"
Victor: "Is there a bite mark in all of the corpse?
The police seem to be calling it the "vampire murder case". "
Harrison:"Vampire is a.... fictitious creature Isn't it? "
William: "It's too early to crush the possibilities with assumptions.
What is it? Life is sometimes something you don't think of. "/
"It's too quick to kill the possibilities with assumptions. Life sometimes happens to be unreasonable."
Harrison:"What do you think of?"
William:"I hear that vampires are creatures that live forever. Yes ..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"If the greats are actually vampires, do you think they would be optimistic if they were still alive?"
"If Da Vinci and Napoleon are still breathing somewhere in this world."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Harrison: "Don't be the biggest enemy in the crown"
William:"By all means, what you want to ask is"
As usual, sighing to the elegant and pleasant self -righteous king will change the air on the spot.
Victor, a queen assistant, opened his lips with one blink.
Victor: "So, Harrison. From His Majesty to you It's a request for a mission. "
The darkness spreads again, and the footsteps trying to swallow me echo.
Still, I can't stop here and not go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Until the day to achieve × ×)
Harrison: "Oh, good. But just ask the requirements."
"I have a book I want to read."
While laughing a lot, I re -held a book recommended by a man like a doubt.
It has become dirty, with this hand.
i try to put the picture in order but it doesn't go the way i want it too

Please, tell me your top ten most disturbing books you’ve read. I honestly need recommendations.
thank you very much for asking!!! <3 some of these are so nasty that i feel the need for a disclaimer; i read disturbing horror (sometimes. can't stomach it continiously) when i get bored of everything since i know for sure it'll be stimulating and never boring. these are those books in no particular order!
the troop by nick cutter is about a troop of boy group scouts and their scoutmaster who are camping on an island when a fucked up parasite starts spreading. the body horror and animal cruelty/death in this are beyond insane, the turtle scene haunts me. i gave it 5/5 stars.
any man by amber tamblyn is one of my favourite books ever but i've never dared recommend it to anyone. it's about the male victims of a female serial rapist and genital mutilator. it's extremely harrowing and disturbing but i knew after 30 pages this would be a 5 star read for me, some of the best writing i've ever read. i gave it 5/5 stars. fun fact: amber tamblyn is also the girl who dies in the opening scene of the ring (2002)!
tampa by alissa nutting is about a woman who starts working as a teacher at a high school just to seduce and have sex with (rape) preteen boys. it's written from her perspective and it is extremely unpleasant to be inside her head. absolutely disgusting but also very well written. i gave it 4/5 stars.
earthlings by sayaka murata is about a young girl who has convinced herself that she is an alien from another planet to cope with the horrific abuse she going through. this book goes places i couldn't explain if i tried. i expected this to not be that disturbing and insane since it's quite popular but i was very wrong! i gave it 4/5 stars.
exquisite corpse by poppy z brite is about two gay necrophilic cannibalistic serial killers on the loose and their victims. it's set during the 1980s aids crisis which is very interesting. not much else to say about this one honestly! lot of nasty things happen! i gave it 3/5 stars.
tender is the flesh by agustina bazterrica is about a world in which animal meat has become unsafe for humans so we have started breeding and keeping humans for consumption. maybe not as disturbing as the other books on here but really interesting portrayal of the meat industry and how society treats minorities aka people they deem as "less human" than themselves. i gave it 4/5 stars.
gone to see the river man by kristopher triana is about a woman who has started a relationship with an imprisoned serial killer and has agreed to go on a quest for him. i was stressed as hell throughout this because she brings her mentally disabled sister with her who has no idea what's going on and i massively feared for her wellbeing. it actually wasn't disturbing at all until about 80% through and then it starts smacking you across the face. yikes! i gave it 3/5 stars.
things have gotten worse since we last spoke by eric larocca is about two women who meet online and quickly get involved in a very intense and fucked up relationship. goes pretty hard on the body horror and animal cruelty and baby cruelty. jesus christ. i gave it 4/5 stars.
to be devoured by sara tantlinger is about a woman who becomes obsessed with the thought of being a vulture and finding out what rotting flesh tastes like. she goes further and further to try and find out the vultures' secrets. now THIS is real weird girl swag. i gave it 4/5 stars.
i ran out of novels help. the most disturbing manga i've read is brutal: confessions of a homicide investigator by kei koga and ryo izawa which is about a homicide investigator who secretly punishes the criminals he encounters. this is very brutal. for example he finds a guy who raped a woman and he shoves a stake up his ass. i gave it 4/5 stars.

i'm into horror for a lot of reasons, but one of them is that it has this capability for externalising a kind of violence that is often only felt, not seen. my favourite works of horror use experiences like mental illness or oppression as springboards - they elevate psychological terror into something you can actually see and fight against. like, yeah, depression DOES sometimes feel like you have a monster living in your cellar that nobody can see except you! puberty DOES sometimes feel like you're transforming into something weird and dangerous! that's why i often find horror movies so cathartic - even comforting, in some cases.
and that's why i originally started to explore splatterpunk - because i read exquisite corpse and loved it, because it was a queer novel by a queer author that took the political violence of the aids crisis and made it literal, blew it up to a monstrous scale that matched the monstrous pain felt by the victims and their families. it felt genuinely subversive. it felt visceral. and then i read a bunch of other splatterpunk fiction, and was disappointed to discover that most of it was just an excuse for men to self-publish their badly-written snuff porn.

I have such an eclectic bookshelf. I've tried to get a real mix of everything I read. Please don't judge me on Twilight. I went through a phase where I literally bought every single version of it that got released.
My Gishwhes book is from the year I took part. I'm not in the book but one of my friends/team mates is.

Love your reblogs, got any good book recs on cannibalism?
thanks, love! and yes, i do! i’ve got some great book recs for you 🦦
-> tw: the books i’m about to mention are 18+ and may contain graphic violence, toxic behavior, death, abuse, grief, animal cruelty, suicidal thoughts, vomit, necr—philia, gore, etc. if you’re sensitive to these topics, please don’t read.
monstrilio: a grieving mother who secretly keeps a piece of her late son’s lung, which transforms into a strange creature named monstrilio. as he grows, monstrilio forces his family to confront deep fears and desires, exploring themes of grief.
the spear cuts through water: two protagonists: a disgraced former general and a young fugitive with a mysterious power. they embark on a dangerous journey to stop a violent empire and prevent a devastating war. as they travel, they are pursued by a powerful and vengeful emperor while uncovering dark secrets about their pasts. the story has pretty graphic cannibalism.
the devours: dorothy, a food critic with an insatiable appetite—not just for food, but for violence. the book is written in the form of a confessional memoir, where dorothy recounts her life of indulgence, both in food and in her compulsive need to consume men.
sister, maiden, monster: a woman who has faced severe trauma, abuse, and loss. in a dark, post-apocalyptic world. the novel blends body horror, psychological horror, and themes of empowerment as she grapples with monstrous transformations and the struggle to maintain her humanity.
exquisite corpse: two individuals with dark, obsessive desires who form a twisted and disturbing connection. one, a former murderer who escapes from prison, and the other, a cannibal, share an intense fixation on death, violence, and taboo pleasures. (this one is the heaviest)
to be devoured: a protagonist whose obsession with another person spirals into a dangerous, consuming desire. as they struggle to control their primal urges, their fixation leads to violent and disturbing actions.
tender is the flesh: a world where humans are farmed and slaughtered for meat due to a virus that makes animal consumption unsafe. in this society, people are seen as livestock, and the protagonist, works in a processing plant. he begins to question the morality of the system when he is given a human “specimen” to care for, leading him to grapple with his role in the dehumanization of others.
sorry for the delay!

can't sleep so I'm thinking of all the analysis I want to write. anyway, nearly a month after reading it, I'm still thinking about Exquisite Corpse. I wanna write a little essay on Andrew and Jay as metaphors for the physical (AIDS) and societal (homophobia, the Reagan/Thatcher admins, racism) issues that murdered young gay men. like. Obviously they are based on serial killers (Dahmer and Nielsen respectively) but I think it's also very interesting to examine them as the Powers That Be made manifest. I know AIDS is a prominent part of the novel already -- but Andrew and Jay are like the disease: infecting, maiming, and ultimately killing young queer men. Eating those young men alive literally and metaphorically.
anyway now that I've written this down I'm gonna try and sleep again. gn 💤
