Larry Brooks’ Story Structure
The day the aliens arrived, my mother was having a nervous breakdown--
The Larry Brooks story structure is one that I have used several times and find to be very useful when planning a novel. It is a structure that I will detail here in depth because – to me – it seems to be one of the more effective methods of outlining a novel. Image generated using artificial intelligence. Brooks is a writing coach, author, and speaker known for his expertise in the craft of…

Progress 6 // December 21st, 2023
I've been making very slow, but sure progress. And I finally got out of my reading slump. My mental health hasn't been great, but maybe if I read enough I won't notice.
Surprisingly, once I finished "Story Engineering" by Larry Brooks, I was able to read normally. In my opinion, the book was incredibly repetitive and it kept advertising the book to me, even though I'd already bought it? It just kept talking in circles, and it could have easily been half the length it was with all the same important details.
BUT, I will say that the checklists were actually quite useful, and that the last three sections were the most useful by far. And maybe this was meant for those entirely new to writing (plus, even though I knew most of it, it was nice to see it verbalized in front of me) (<- trying to figure out why it was so repetitive).
Regardless, I'd say it's not the best, but if you're new, then go for it. Skim until you get to the checklists or until you find information that's actually new to you.
Also, I devoured "Exquisite Corpse," by Poppy Z. Brite, and also learned that he is a fellow transman. I'd say it's a fun but tough read, but not for those uncomfortable with gore and heavy sex. (I'd say more but I wrote a literary analysis on this book for fun, and I am fried). I've also started reading old Batman comics from the 1940s, from the Golden Age Omnibus (vol. 1). Unsure why, but I am, so that's a thing I'm doing.
I'd also taken up reading the Bible for inspiration and things to reference. It'd be fun to incorporate symbolism (which I would have done anyway) specifically Biblical (maybe other religions would be fun as well?) So far, I've only made it through the Book of Genesis, and 2 chapters of the Book of Exodus.
I've gotten into (watching) ballet, and actually studying for my classes. Productivity!!!
As for the actual novel I'm trying to write, it's definitely slow, and I'm working through world-building and character-rebuilding (I decided that I didn't like it). I'm very indecisive.
I haven't been drawing much at all, lately :(
