Erró‘s giant mural ftrc.blog/parque-das-nacoes/ Lisbon's eastern edge was once a landscape of factories and industry. But that all changed when the vibrant Parque das Nações burst onto the scene! This formerly industrial area was completely transformed for the 1998 World Fair – also known as Expo '98, and some locals still call it by that name. Today, it's a spectacular district of elegant, stylish architecture – a nod to the past with nods to the future. I was there for a few days in May 2022 for a design conference and decided to use my free time to explore everything Parque das Nações offers. Here, I will share some tips so you can enjoy this part of Lisbon as much as I did. by ftrc

Lissabon: Street-Art - die Stadt als Kunstmuseum - Fotogalerie
Tumblr media

Wanha Herra
Please look at him. He's known as the Old Gentleman.
Tumblr media
About two months ago I finally got to meet my idol (and future husband) The Old Gentleman. He’s the oldest surviving diving suit (early 18th century, such age wow) made from calf leather. He was donated to the Raahe Museum by Captain Johan Leufstadius, a mariner and ship owner, in the 1860s
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nobody knows for sure where he was built, but those more educated have suggested he might have been made in Finland because of his mittens and because the toes of the feet are modeled after traditional Finnish boots. I think one could dive as deep as 4 meters down in it. The diver would enter it via the belly (you can see the stitch right there and they would water-proof the suit with a mixture of tallow, tar, and pitch. The air would go into the suit via wooden pipes, which were attached to the hood of the suit and the air would be exhaled from behind (which I sadly don’t have any pictures of, but I mean, it’s rude to photograph people’s behind).
Tumblr media
The three holes in the front are for the diver to look outside and he has a wooden frame. The suit was used in short underwater work like checking the condition of the bottom of a ship without needing to dry-dock it, which saved time and money.
There is a drawing dating to 1727 in the Swedish National Archive that shows a similar diving suit, which has helped to date the age of the Old Gentleman.
In 1988, Raahe Museum conservator Jouko Turunen made a similar suit using the tools and materials one would have had in the 18th century to create a replica diving suit (it is called The Young Gentleman) and has done several successful dives with it, one even lasting for 40 minutes. Turunen’s main goal was to prove that the suit could be used for diving and he did exactly that. There is a video of one of his dives from the 80’s but I can’t find it right now, but here’s one of the Young Gentleman dancing: youtu.be/gYiprC8q2TA?si=GlbzmUN1yItSloDj&t=43
The Old Gentleman has seen the world. He has visited the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the Expo98 World Exhibition in Lisbon among other places.
Anyway, I just wanted you all to know that The Old Gentleman is really cool and I want to kiss him.
