frankly baffling as a sequel to The Exorcist, but there is a good movie in here, somewhere, buried under a lot of baffling creative choices and a tremendously bloated runtime. i can see why everyone hated it, it forgoes all of the exact specific things that were appealing about The Exorcist to go in the complete opposite direction and largely fails in doing more than some spectacle. there is an entire act/section of this movie that you can cut without any consequences. 30-45 minutes just straight up gone with literally zero impact or effect on the entire narrative in any way, it's just a pointless and exhaustingly boring side adventure. John Boorman is clearly a good visual director, there's a lot of fun visual stuff in here, but the visuals cannot save just how boring and scattered the script is.

Bad Horror Movie of the day: Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977)
Years after her possession by wind demon Pazuzu, Reagan McNeil undergoes hypnotic therapy under the supervision of Dr. Gene Tuskin. She doesn't recall the events per se but is plagued by nightmares. And when Father Lamont comes to investigate father Merrin's death during said exorcism, it comes to his mind that she might be a... faith healer. Anyway, as Reagan's visions lead Lamont to Africa, he meets another former possession victim called Kokumo, who is now a locust researcher. Since Reagan's innate goodness is apparently why she was targeted, Pazuzu prepares for the second round. But alas, she's not alone this time with the power of... mind connections.
Sure, why not.
Common sentiment dictates that sequels are never as good as the original, which is one I contend: There’s more than a few sequels that arguably surpassed the brilliance of their original film, be it Aliens or Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Needless to say, this is not one of those cases. If the metric of a bad sequel is the quality drop relative to the original, this is a frontrunner for the worst sequel in movie history.
Going from a fairly believable family drama that slowly ascends into powerful and twisted supernatural horror with some subtle and well executed psychological undertones to James Earl Jones spitting cherry tomatoes while dressed in a giant locust costume is a bit too jarring a tonal shift, to the point if it wasn’t for Linda Blair reprising her role as Reagan this movie could easily pass for a completely different series. There’s tap dancing, for crying out loud!
It’s a fascinating watch: on one hand you have some moderately interesting concepts with visuals that do have flair. On the other, the resulting storyline to which these visuals serve to can be only described as bizarre and unintentionally hilarious, some arguing it’s more akin to a superhero origin than a horror film. It’s THAT off the rails.

I think it goes without saying there's a reason I've talked about the original Exorcist and Exorcist III... while skipping this one. It's honestly a sight to behold. Honestly, they couldn’t have gotten a worse director for this project if they tried: while John Boorman’s resume does have some solid movies such as the wartime drama Hope and Glory(1987), his lowest points include the absolute train-wreck that is Zardoz(1974) from which he came fresh out of.
You know, this little gem:

Add to that a disdain for the original movie and the chances of this sequel being anything other than riffing material go kaput in an instant. The original film’s director William Friedkin once told a story that the executives got chased out of the cinema by an angry mob like 10 minutes during the premiere, and apocryphal as this account is… one has to wonder how accurate it is.
