frankly baffling as a sequel to The Exorcist, but there is a good movie in here, somewhere, buried under a lot of baffling creative choices and a tremendously bloated runtime. i can see why everyone hated it, it forgoes all of the exact specific things that were appealing about The Exorcist to go in the complete opposite direction and largely fails in doing more than some spectacle. there is an entire act/section of this movie that you can cut without any consequences. 30-45 minutes just straight up gone with literally zero impact or effect on the entire narrative in any way, it's just a pointless and exhaustingly boring side adventure. John Boorman is clearly a good visual director, there's a lot of fun visual stuff in here, but the visuals cannot save just how boring and scattered the script is.

James Earl Jones
1931-2024
It makes a kind of sense that James Earl Jones, one of the most revered actors of his time, was best known to most people for two voice roles, as Mufasa, the murdered and avenged sovereign in Disney’s 1993 The Lion King and of course as the voice of the masked Sith Lord Darth Vader in the Star Wars series (1977-2016), arguably the most iconic villain of all time. Hollywood racism had something to do with that, as did Jones preference for the greater opportunities of the stage (he would win three Tonys, one for Lifetime achievement). But there was the voice itself, a rich authoritative baritone that commanded respect if not deference, that could make the line “I find your lack of faith disturbing” both chilling and funny, that could turn his climactic speech in Field of Dreams (“This field, this game – it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be”) from sentimental kitsch to plainspoken poetry.
On the Stage he would perform the works of Shakespeare, Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Wiliams and August Wilson but in film he was more often used to lend gravitas and dignity to films like the Tom Clancy adaptations: 1990’s The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger (1990 1992 and 1994-- he played an admiral), 1993’s Sommersby (a judge) and the wrongheaded 1986 Soul Man (a distinguished Law Professor trying to school a white student who used tanning pills to turn himself black – it was the 80s). He made his debut as one of the bomber crew helping Slim Pickens destroy the world in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove (1964); was Oscar-nominated for reprising his Tony-winning role as Jack Jefferson, (a boxer not-so-loosely based on Jack Johnson) in Martin Ritts’s 1970 The Great White Hope; played a garbageman courting Diahann Carroll in 1974’s Claudine. He was a scientist/Demon fighter in John Boorman’s utterly bonkers Exorcist II: The Heretic (1978) and Thulsa Doom, the snake cult leading archenemy of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan The Barbarian (John Milius, 1982); A sergeant who loves the army but hates the (Vietnam) war in Francis Ford Coppola’s underrated Gardens of Stone (1987). Not a bad career for a side hustle. And that voice….

THE EXORCIST III is probably one of the more underrated great horror sequels ever made. Subtly strong direction by William Peter Blatty, a captivating mystery mixed with some memorable scares and visuals, and fantastic performances - especially by George C. Scott, Jason Miller and especially Brad Dourif. While it’s not a masterpiece like the 1973 original, this 1990 sequel is definitely a massive improvement over 1977’s THE HERETIC: EXORCIST II in every single way, making this the first real sequel [in my opinion] of the franchise. While I prefer the Theatrical Cut due to its final act, The Legion Cut is no slouch and offers something to those wanting a more grounded resolution. Either way, this is a mandatory viewing for any fan of this franchise.

The Parademons in Zack Snyder's Justice League(2021) and in its predecessor, Batman v Superman(2016), remind me of the locust swarms from Exorcist II The Heretic. Exorcist II(1977) is another John Boorman film and like Zardoz(1974) before it this sequel to the 1973 original is often malign and discarded but I think it deserves reappraisal.
A lot of the themes and ideas found in Exorcist II especially on the nature of good vs evil have made their way into Snyder's Superman films(Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Zack Snyder's Justice League).
