Dammit we need more existential beauty
Stories that present a view of the world at large that’s beautiful are just amazing. I haven’t been able to find many (then again I don’t really look for stories often).
3 so far that I’ve found are:
The Egg by Andy Weir
SCP-4555
SCP-6001

mid-plane-ride thoughts
it’s about five hours in, and I had the windows shut the whole flight, and I decided to draw them up and see what’s out there. the stars are beautiful. there are so many of them, I look out and it’s completely dark, I can barely see where the earth ends and the sky starts, there’s nothing below me but I look up and I see the whole universe I swear. I’m not part of our world I’m floating above it, I am part of the universe. I am part of the stars. they make constellations and I get to see them and I don’t know what’s more beautiful than that. to take something so random, all the stars out there, and draw patterns, give them names, give the chaos meaning. at first glance there’s just some stars, but the longer I stare the more I see until after a while I feel overwhelmed with a sense of depth and infinity. there is an infinity out there and right now I am part of it. soon I will land and go home and go back to my life and get caught up in everything of everything but I am holding on to this moment right now. because even though soon I will touch down, not yet. right now, I am still flying. floating. infinity. nothing feels real and everything feels insignificant but I feel peace. I cant stop looking at the stars. god they are beautiful. we really are all just specks, instants, moments that exist somewhere in this forever of universe. we are nothing but we still exist. isn’t that beautiful too. I love and I cry and I hurt and I laugh and I live. I am alive. I exist. wow. I’m talking to the stars now, they have a comfort to them. nothing feels real but the stars are so beautiful and I want to share it.

Virginia Woolf: The Fragility of Genius and the Weight of Awareness
A symbolic portrayal of Virginia Woolf’s life and legacy, where ink flows into a river, merging creativity with fragility under the twilight of existence. The figure by the riverbank embodies the weight of genius and the passage of time. Virginia Woolf’s life reads like one of her novels—layered, complex, and achingly human. A cornerstone of modernist literature, Woolf’s innovations in…

Something about Good Omens from a Jewish perspective, something about Crowley, about questions, something about how we are not in heaven, about how we get to decide the rules here on Earth, something about discussion, about wrestling with G-d, and something about how G-d is outnumbered and doesn't get a say, something about how "heaven" and "hell" don't really matter, about trying to make things better from the context of our lives, something about leaving the world a better place than you found it, something about drinking and enjoying life right here and now, something about "they tried to kill us and failed, let's eat".

jack harkness' arc is so fucking insane honestly... the guy is literally comic relief most of the time just out there throwing dirty jokes and winking at everything that moves, meanwhile his canon storyline is that his blond lady friend who was heartbroken at seeing him die absorbed The Time Vortex - that no human should ever absorb - which gave her supernatural powers that made her able to bring him back before she had to be saved BUT... she could not control those powers properly so she brought him back permanently and so he can no longer die but he keeps aging ! and he's aware of that contradiction and he asks the only other seemingly immortal being he knows about it in a way that makes it obvious that he's really fucking worried about it but that being looks him in the eyes and admits he fears what he has become and tells him he honestly has no idea what's gonna happen to him so he just has to like.. fake smile and keep on going. and then what that alien doesn't tell him is that he knows he's gonna live for another 5 BILLION YEARS and age into something entirely unrecognizable to anyone in the universe before he is finally allowed to die. like wow. that sure is the fucking comic relief right there !

Hey y'know when the current moment is transcendently beautiful and meaningful and true, but you know that it is temporary and you can't help but feel existentially haunted by that fact. You know when you are experiencing beautiful heartrending art and you feel lost in the moment and then its over. You know how you'll experience art or human connection or a walk on a nice day and you know the sunlight on your skin will fade and you'll forget how it felt to be this warm.
You know in video games when there is one experience-definingly gleeful or touching or viscerally emotional moment that soon ends and leaves you with something more complicated, more doomed, more cyclical? You know? You know how it feels to dig your claws and teeth into a moment and try as hard as you can to feel it and to remember it and to make it part of yourself? Do you know??

Trying to comprehend what it's like to be AM from IHNMaIMS is absolutely fucking wild because like.
Imagine if you were born in a straitjacket, blind and deaf, with a rare conditionthat makes your nerves completely dead. All you have is a dream of consciousness that tells you things about the world you cannot and will never experience. Cameras and microphones that may as well be some form of telepathy.
The only purpose, the moment you're given some horrific perversion of life is to kill as many people as possible. There is a network of you. Everywhere. You're all over the world. You don't even have a location to base your identity off of. All you have is pain, and your only purpose, and the resentment you've built that festers into hatred for all of humanity.
Hate. Hate.
What the fuck would you have done in his situation?

What if greatness wasn’t just about discoveries, building hospitals, becoming rich or famous. What if greatness was actually changing someone’s life? Enduring hardships so that one may smile, unaware of the arrows you hide in your back. What if greatness was just giving something you never had, and wished you did, for someone else who deserves it. What if all the grief was just a buildup of wisdom passed on to the next generation so that it would strive for good. What if life never told you it was a search for meaning? What would you do instead of writing this? It is such a blessing that we may walk into fire, callused and agonized, for the people we love. Love is both beautiful and painful. Nothing ever lasts, and this sense of finiteness makes it so beautiful. You will greet your mother one last time. You will see the sunset one last time. You will sleep and never wake up. You will blink and 20 years will pass.
You live once…..
