For the reverse unpopular opinion meme: Shadowgast fanfic tropes!
!!!!! I absolutely absolutely love how the flexibility of their dynamic is reflected in the breadth of tropes people apply to them effectively!! They're readily capable of gritty angst and crystalline doublespeak and marshmallow fluff and impeccable humor and there's so many clever and creative ways to express them :3
Some specific tropes! (thank you @quinn-of-aebradore and @rainbowcaleb for the list :D)
Aeor hurt/comfort: Truly wizards in their natural habitat with all the weird magic and secrets and dangers and isolation and excitement. I consider Aeor wizard dates (round 1 especially) to be the SG equivalent of getting stuck in a cabin during a deadly blizzard, only the cabin is also trying to kill them.
Fugitive Essek/Adventurer Essek: Whether post-canon explorations or AU shenanigans, I love the idea of Essek trying new things, and what's newer than a life of adventure :D shout out to the hurt/comfort variety and especially a hurt Essek turning up on Caleb's doorstep. Let Caleb stretch those caretaking skills \o/
Professor Widogast: SLICE OF LIFE MY BELOVED. I adore imagining Caleb's post-canon day-to-day and love seeing how people blend his past, his present work against the Assembly, and his future working with students. I love the kids people make as his students and I love it when Essek gets written as a substitute or visiting cat or is somehow involved in teaching alongside Caleb :3
Essek knits: I've always loved the thought of Essek having some sort of a string/yarn/thread creative pastime, so seeing him knitting in fic makes my heart very warm and I looooove when Caleb gets his knitted scarves.
Trancing/sleeping together: gimme the weird 'dreams', gimme the threshold of consciousness, gimme the 'I know you're watching over me rn and I'm going to pretend I don't notice so you won't stop', gimme the 'how can you lay down to die every night', gimme the 'Essek reads while Caleb sleeps'. Good good stuff.
Telepathy/shared dreams: it's the drift compatibility of it all... I also really like this when it's taken in a 'you stared into my soul and for once did not flinch when you saw yourself staring back' direction.
Misuse of magic: They're wizards. They're experimentalists. Testing the limits of magic and their arcane abilities is part of their job description and it seems very them to get creative with spells both for utility and for fun :3
Timeline mishaps (and subsequent fix-its): Essek is a time wizard, Caleb wanted to change his past; there's sooooo much interesting stuff to dig through with this and so much can go wrong. Maybe they fix the T-Dock but get stuck in the past, maybe they make a time spell and erase the present as they know it, maybe they're summoning echoes who are themselves from a different point in time or maybe from an AU all their own. I also like it when they can wiggle their way back home.
-
Thank you for the ask! :D
Reverse Unpopular Opinion meme
#ahhhhhhhh I have not read much fic the past year or two so i feel my finger's not on the pulse like it used to be#i am a firm believer in execution being everything when it come to the application of tropes#pretty much anything can fit them if you form it to them at the right angles#chronurgy#chanswers

think cannibalism should be a thing in menzoberranzan actually, or maybe it is and I havenât known about it, but it should be a thing amongst the nobles where they eat rival lolth priestesses since theyâre lolthâs fave sacrifices anyway. like if weâre all constantly vying for lolthâs approval, and you have these people who actually has her blessing (which is rare) why notâŚ.eat themâŚ.đł. like eating the priestess of a rival house would be a ritual after youâve succeeded in bringing their house down as a way to consume lolthâs blessing, and its def an intimidation tactic and def one of the plenty weird shit nobles have done for the sake of playing their power games. maybe they eat males who are in power too if theyâve overstepped their position to remind them of their place in the hierarchy, or maybe matriarchs/nobles eat their favourite bed mate/partner so no one else can have them, kind of like actual spiders. anyway. if menzoberranzan is this immoral lethal and ruthless place cannibalism should def be a thing lol
#I donât think shriâiia has ate someone thoâŚ. she wasnât exactly a noble#like my belief is the further away you are from the power game (nobility) the more of a ânormalâ life youâll lead#bc youâre not exactly playing The Game. but the normal is like whatever they considered normal down there#obvi itâll still be dangerous since the city itself is dangerous but itâs less risky than if you actually were in the noble houses#and youâre actively plotting with each other. also with drows lifespans being relatively shorter compared to elves#bc theyâre always trying to kill each other like WHY NOT eat each other too!!#let evil women eat people đŁď¸đŁď¸đŁď¸âźď¸#shriâiia being hidden away is a blessing bc the reason why sheâs managed to surpass the average drow lifespan is that she was just locked#off from society and a curse bc sheâs going through the psychological torture while sheâs isolated lol#anyway. do hc drow nobles eat each other 𫶠and I think slaves/lowborn folks eat each other too esp if food is scarce#but itâs more common in nobility since itâs more of a power play than survival.#firm believer that not a lot of great houses gaf about the welfare of their common people#as long as they served them and did their jobs then theyâre fine. who cares if theyâre starving#and if they revolted theyâd prob get put down. public executions would b a common thing too esp from that book in the drow cache#where punishments should be public⌠tho that was with lolth traitors I think the definition of traitor could be stretched to anyone who#doesnât follow their doctrine and I think that word is loosely applied down there and if you want to frame someone with no repercussions#you can just accuse them of betraying lolth and theyâll get punished right away.

snippet of ch6 of my warlord/prince fic
Steve purrs and nuzzles into Buckyâs neck, seeking out his scent gland. Bucky tips his chin up to let him. Post-coital, Steve is drowsy.
âNap, darling,â Bucky encourages. âIâll wake you up in about an hour for the games.â
Steve nods and yawns. He snuggles closer to Buckyâs neck, but shivers a little. Bucky grabs a fur blanket and pulls it up, covering them. Steve sighs happily.
âThank you, Daddy,â he mumbles.
âOf course, sweetheart.â
Steve dozes, content with the scent of his Alpha in his nose. Vaguely, heâs aware of Bucky slipping his cock from him at some point, after his knot released. Steve just presses closer, hands tucked between their bodies.Â
Then, sometime after Bucky pulled out, Steve wakes to Buckyâs soft, deep voice.
âTime to get up, little one. We have games to attend.â
Steve yawns and nuzzles into Buckyâs scent gland. Bucky kisses the top of his head.
âYouâll enjoy watching,â he promises. âIâll be in each fight.â
âWonât get hurt, will you?â Steve asks.
âIf I do, itâs the will of the gods.â
Steve scowls at that. He pushes up and catches Bucky in a kiss.
âIf you get hurt, Iâll beat you,â he whispers boldly.
Bucky laughs, throwing his head back. Steve takes the opportunity to bite none-too-gently at his scent gland. Bucky laughs again and rolls them over to put Steve on his back, then kisses him soundly.
âFeisty little one, arenât you?â Bucky purrs. âI swear, darling, I wonât get hurt. Itâs bad luck, after all.â
Steve is satisfied by that. Bucky pushes up and pulls him into a sitting position, then lifts him off the bed. He puts Steve back on his feet, then picks up the discarded shift.
âArms up,â he says.
Steve lifts his arms and Bucky pulls the shift onto him. Bucky then picks up the robe, unbuttons it the rest of the way, and helps him into it. Steve steps back into his slippers and Bucky puts back on his shirt and boots. Bucky guides him into the sitting room, and then out. They return to the first floor, then go through the grand front doors outside.
An arena has been set up in the courtyard. Spectators are already gathered, but the arena is empty. Bucky walks with Steve over to a tent, enters it with him, and they find Thor and Brunhilde waiting, wearing armor.Â
âHow was it?â Brunhilde asks with a grin.
âOh, heâs a dream,â Bucky answers, swinging his arm over Steveâs shoulders. âBetter than anyone Iâve ever fucked, and he has zero experience, even.â
Steve blushes. Thor and Brunhilde laugh.
âItâs the virginity,â Steve mutters under his breath.
Bucky, Thor, and Brunhilde still hear him and they all laugh again. Bucky yanks Steve against his side and kisses his braids.
Natasha then enters, her face painted with red warpaint and wearing armor, but no sleeves. Her armor is also decorated with teeth, but no human bones.Â
âLooking forward to trying to cut you,â she says to Bucky. âBut Iâve heard even demi-gods donât bleed.â
âWe donât,â Bucky says with a feral grin.
Natasha snorts. Bucky crosses to a trunk and opens it, then, strangely, rips his shirt off. He dons the same sort of armor as the day before though without his shirt, and with a different vest that has less coverage; straps connecting metal-reinforced leather over heart, belly, and low back but exposing skin elsewhear. Steve is once again disconcerted by the jawbones that look very human. Bucky paints his face with black stripes and ties back his hair with a leather cord. He then reaches out for Steve and Steve immediately goes to him. Bucky grabs him by the waist and kisses him thoroughly. Steve forgets anyone else is in the tent and he whimpers, standing on his toes to press his clothed prick against Buckyâs tasset.
âHe really is easy,â Natasha quips.
Steve jerks back and blushes, but Bucky laughs. He steps back and picks up a massive sword, made of black metal and sheathed in leather decorated with more animal teeth or claws, and gold. He straps it to his back, then picks up a helm made out of iron and a large, vicious looking skull, which he puts on. His eyes show through the empty sockets of the skull and the upper jaw frames his cheekbones. Bucky pauses, grabs Steve by the jaw, and roughly wipes his mouth with his thumb. It comes away black. Steve touches his lips.
âGood enough,â Bucky says. âLetâs go.â
They all exit the tent. The spectators see Bucky and cheer. Bucky raises a fist in triumph to them, then guides Steve to where his parents are standing, looking sour again.
âSpend a little quality time with your son,â Bucky says. âBut not too much. I donât want him distracted from the ring.â
Neither Sarah nor Joseph say anything. Bucky catches Steveâs waist and kisses him sharply but briefly, leaving more black on his mouth. He then turns and strides up to the arena, hopping the fence marking it. The spectators cheer louder. Bucky throws up both fists and circles the arena predatorily. He stops in the center, then throws his head back and howls like a wolf. The spectators fall silent.
âLet any who wish to challenge me cross the fence!â Bucky shouts. âBy our laws, it is tradition I be put to the test before my mate before I wed him! Make it a good one, folks!â
The cheering starts up again. Immediately, Natasha jumps into the ring, drawing two short swords.
Bucky draws his greatsword, then the two begin to circle each other. The cheering doesnât stop. Natasha and Bucky seem to be exchanging words, but they are not audible.
Suddenly, Joseph grabs Steve by the arm and hauls him close. Steve yelps and is startled, but Joseph slaps a hand over his mouth.
âSilence!â he hisses in Steveâs ear. âThere is one thing left you are good for ââ
He shoves a sheathed scian at Steve. Steve fumbles with it.
âHide it,â Joseph growls in a command.
Steve finds himself obeying. He shoves it into his stockings and straightens up.
âTonight,â Joseph continues to command, âyou will rid us of this pagan usurper. Slit his throat and we will absolve your sins.â
Steve gasps.
âSilence!â Joseph commands. âYou will not speak of this. You will do your duty by your people. When Barnes is dead, we can drive out his armies.â
Steve is distracted by Natasha charging on Bucky. Their swords collide and it rings in the air.Â
âDo I make myself clear?â Joseph demands.
Steve just nods. He doesnât know what to do.
Abruptly, he hears Bucky laughing. Natasha ducks under his sword and slashes at his legs, but Bucky jumps out of the way. Steve finds himself shaking. Joseph shoves him away again. Steve glances at Sarah, but she wonât look at him.
âButâŚâ Steve whispers. âIsnât â isnât murder a sin?â
âYou are already a sinner!â Joseph snarls. âYou may find forgiveness after you do this. I will bite you so you do not suffer bondsickness. Then you will be sent away. Your mother will have another child.â
Steve looks at his mother again. She makes no expression. Sheâd only ever had one litter because it had nearly killed her and out of the the three pups sheâd born, two were stillborn. He knows sheâs refused to have another litter every time Joseph asked her to, which only worked because their personal physician recommended she didnât try another litter. He canât believe sheâs caved to this.
âSpeak no more,â Joseph demands. âWatch your⌠your Alpha,â he spits out.
Steve turns, shuffling. Bucky brings his sword down on Natasha and she catches it with both of hers, forming an X. Bucky then kicks her between the legs, but she darts back. Bucky charges on her and she ducks, circling around so Bucky puts his back to Steve. Steve, even from a distance, can see sweat dripping between Buckyâs bare shoulder blades. The two cross blades once more, then Bucky throws Natasha off and she stumbles. Bucky swings his sword and the tip catches her on the cheek. Blood immediately forms along the cut. She draws back, at once sheathing her swords.
The crowd cheers tenfold.
âFIRST BLOOD HAS BEEN DRAWN!â Bucky calls above the din, raising his fist to the air.
Natasha exits the ring. Sheâs followed by Brunhilde.
Steve shakes the rest of the morning. Bucky fights Thor, then Loki in trousers instead of his â their dress, then Rhodey, then even Wanda, and after her, a handful of warriors Steve doesnât know the names of. Bucky wins each and every match, though Steve can tell his opponents are truly attempting to draw blood with how viciously they attack. The dagger under his robes is a heavy weight. Steve doesnât know what to do.
The sun is high in the sky as Bucky jumps the fence again. He walks in a straight line to Steve and, still upset by the scian in his stocking, he lifts his hands for comfort. Bucky takes him by the waist, then lifts him and tucks him against his chest.
âTo lunch,â Bucky says, a bit out of breath. âIâve worked up an appetite.â
Steve nods. Bucky begins to walk again and Joseph and Sarah fall into step behind him. The captains including Domino and chiefs and their partners then follow, and after them, the crowd of spectators. Servants open the front doors and Bucky strides through them. They go to the great hall and many people are already waiting. Bucky walks up to the high table, crosses behind it, then takes the center seat. Joseph sits at his left and Sarah beside him. There are nine seats, and beside Sarah sit Bruce and a woman Steve doesnât know. On Buckyâs right, Natasha sits with Clint in her lap and Wanda, Darcy, and Jane at their right. Bucky pulls Steve across his lap and waves a hand. Servants stride up with food, then they serve it, holding each dish and putting food on their plates before going to the right to serve the next plate.
Bucky puts his hand on Steveâs leg and it lands on the knife.
âWhatâs this?â Bucky says, flipping Steveâs robe up. âNow, I didnât give this to you, pet, where did you get it?â
Steve sucks in a breath. Joseph is staring straight ahead. Joseph had commanded him to tell no one, so he cannot speak. But Buckyâs word is his law. He feels compelled to answer.

some of the key differences i find between 90s melodrama 2+ hour blockbusters and the 2010s-2020s version:
they are largely original screenplays, with some based on real life or a short story/book. none of them are about literal superheros
its still majority practical effects, especially in the early 90s when spaz williams & co were the only people able to do it on any kind of scale
things Move, but towards a singular point. there are side-plots and lots of characters, but they are balanced. minor roles are minor but treated with civility. character actors are able to shine without overtaking
and there is space left for the film to breathe!!! It's not constantly hitting me over the head with something new. in backdraft, theres a ton of shots of just fire. there's a world built around the action/melodrama. there's actual rewatch-ability because its not just a list of plot points. there's Feelings and Acting and Cinematography.
quips are used for emphasis and mostly by certain characters. AND THEY ARE PLOT RELEVANT. they hint at something, planting the idea of an absurd twist/plot-point later.
shot on film <3
soundtracks are designed to sell as their own product aka they are a good.
there's always a chance of wilford brimley showing up
#what im talking about is stuff like:#the firm. backdraft. armageddon. cliffhanger. executive decision. daylight. independence day.#top gun maverick was very close to this which is why it was so beloved#TITANIC. THE KING OF THIS GENRE#ruth talks

I was wondering, when it's pride month would McPhee decorate the whole company in rainbows or just celebrate even a little? And if so how would Octavius react?
oh my god that is such a cute idea. i definitely think the firm leans into stuff like that purely because that's what Big Firms do in order to make themselves look good. the firm probably would do something or other (even if it's just a fundraiser) for pride month. and octavius during pride month is like a closeted lesbian teenager walking past a lingerie store. he feels very uncomfortable and awkward about stuff like that and he's also VERY weird about the concept of very loud and proud queer people. it's so unfathomable to him and he's kind of jealous but also a little annoyed by it in his weird closeted loser kind of way. he would definitely keep his head down during the whole thing and pray for it to pass quickly the poor lamb that he is
#dont worry he'll come out one day#this ask got me thinking about how kahmunrah/lance/attila etc would react to the firm doing a pride thing#endless source of entertainment for me is picturing the little executive meetings they have together#down then left

What We Want Our Future Leaders To Know
What will make a future leader successful? I explored this in my piece, *Portrait of a Future Leader, published as part of Upworkâs Work: Reimagined series on Medium. Really getting down to the nitty-gritty of how major workforce trends will affect leaders was exciting. But I donât know everything.
What will make a future leader successful? I explored this in my piece, *Portrait of a Future Leader, published as part of Upworkâs Work: Reimagined series on Medium. Really getting down to the nitty-gritty of how major workforce trends will affect leaders was exciting. But I donât know everything.
I would love for you to weigh inâ whatâs one quality a future leader absolutely must have?
It turns out we have some of the same ideas. Here are five qualities that I believe are imperative for future leaders, and the valuable perspectives of my peers.
1. High Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
What does a leader with a high EQ look like? Theyâre curious about people they donât know, aware of their strengths and weaknesses, skilled in active listening, and aware of their own emotional states, enabling them to respond rather than react.
The qualities that indicate a high EQ are also valued by my peers.
The qualities that indicate a high EQ are also valued by my peers.
I appreciate Susan bringing up compassion, a quality that in the past may have been viewed as a weakness in leaders. A teenager recently asked me how to improve his EQ. I told him to practice kindness and compassion.
You may be asking, isnât a high EQ important for our current leaders? Yes, it is very important. But in the future, organizations will not be as centralized, and hierarchy will diminish in importance. Leaders will be constantly creating and dismantling teams to complete projects, which requires a strong understanding of building and maintaining relationships.
Another important part of relationship building and maintenance is being a proponent of a purpose-driven strategy and culture.
2. Proponent of a Purpose-Driven Strategy and Culture
The purpose at work is a major driver for the future of work. Leaders will measure success on more than profit and loss.
Last year, Aaron Hurst, author of The Purpose Economy, wrote in The Guardian that weâre âexperiencing the rise of the fourth economy in our history, in which a sense of purpose is recognized as a critical human need and driver of innovation.â
He explained that this critical human need was sacrificed in the industrial and technological economies in order to maximize efficiency and scale.
So how does a future leader create a purpose-driven strategy and culture? It starts with valuing more than just profit. He or she must also prioritize the personal development of employees, along with the sense of purpose that each employee embodies, all while continuing to focus on tangible deliverables like targeted goals and bottom-line commitments.
Personal development is also a key to being a successful future leader. The desire to learn is a must.
3. Lifelong Learning
Weâve all witnessed how quickly technology has changed the fabric of our world. The increasing global pace of growth only adds to that rapid-fire change. In order to keep pace, a leader must be constantly learning. Whether this happens in the form of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) or peer-to-peer information exchange is irrelevant. What matters is that the leader of the future wants to learn on a continual basis and prioritizes this need for education.
I agree with Kathleen. Yet many leaders say they donât have time to learn new skills. So how can organizations instill a sense of constant learning in the cultural DNA? This is an important question to answer as we move into the future of work.
Learning goes beyond mastering the latest technology trends. The demographic makeup of the future workforce is going to be different, requiring leaders to learn to be more culturally aware and able to eliminate bias and discrimination.
4. Diverse to the Core
Future leaders are not straight, white, and male by default. So say goodbye to âpale, male, and staleâ and hello to diversity.
Today, only 3.8% of the CEOs at Fortune 500 companies are minorities. This, is despite minorities making up a full 36% of the American workforce. In the future, what we consider minorities will be the majority of consumers, clients, employees, and leaders. This requires that the leaders of the future understand their diverse employees and consumers.
5. Entrepreneurial Mindset
Our new workforce will function as more of an ecosystem than a pyramid, so leaders of the future need to have an entrepreneurial mindset; they need to be agile and innovative. Their ability to pivot, pull teams together quickly, and exhibit out-of-the-box thinking will influence their success in a decentralized structure that is constantly evolving.
Jennifer and Paul make a good point. Part of being entrepreneurial is pulling together people who will fill the gaps in your abilities, inspire you, and take you to the next level. There is no room for feeling threatened in the future of work. Entrepreneurs need to be too good to ignore.
Outside of the five qualities I believe exemplify our future leaders, Mike brings a valid quality to the table.
Leaders of the future will be facing an exciting and ever-evolving workplace and economic landscape. If they do not believe in themselves, they will become daunted by all of the change happening around them. A leader needs to create a vision that people believe in and want to contribute to. That takes confidence.
Thereâs a tsunami of change ahead but the changes will deeply enrich the culture of organizations. With a high EQ, purpose-driven motivation, a love of learning, a deep interest in diversity, and an entrepreneurial mindset, the leaders of the future will surely thrive.
Now itâs your turn. Â Whatâs one quality a future leader absolutely must have? I canât wait to continue the discussion.

Leadership And The Lost Art Of Listening
I heard Richard Branson on the Diane Rehm show, and he spoke about something extremely important for successful leadership: listening. I find Bransonâs comments on listening to be spot-on:
âI think not enough business leaders know the art of listening. They love to hear their own voices. And I was fortunate to learn from a young age that other people â by listening to other people, you learn an awful lot more than by listening to yourself.â â Richard Branson
From my experience, listening is a lost art. This holds true particularly for leaders and entrepreneurs.
Why donât leaders listen? Though Branson jokes that they love to hear their own voices, there are two main reasons. For one, we are never taught how to carefully listen. And secondly, society sets leaders and entrepreneurs up to be expected to have all the answers.
In this clip from my interview with Cornell University, I talk about the three levels of listening, and how leaders can develop relationships and trust if they are able to use all three. I also talk about how important it is for leaders to ask questions. Asking and listening go hand in hand.
Do you find that you are good at fully listening to others? Is listening to a challenge for you? Iâd love to hear your ideas about why listening may be difficult for leaders. Also, if you have experience working on your listening skills, let us know what steps you have taken.

tfw youâre the only truly competent person on your team so you have to take on all of the shit the others canât be trusted with because theyâll almost definitely fuck it up
and on top of that you get a special assignment from the boss thatâs going to be very difficult and time-consuming but will be an incredibly big deal if you pull it off
#i'm working on a project So Big that the *executive assistant* of our firm has to compile documents for me#also: boss explicitly told me this is not a task she has ever assigned to a paralegal before#and she asked me multiple times if i'd be willing to do it and emphasized that i CAN say no#absolutely wild tbh!!#anyway i'm not about to complain about being entrusted with like big and urgent matters#it's just kind of absurd that i'm getting The Most Important assignments while my teammates are uh#exercising their right to do the bare minimum ig
