You had been running around with the group all day

By the end of the day, you were completely beat and just wanted to rest

Ok hmmmm fake dating art school au with Malec, Claia, Lukemaryse and (platonic, obviously) garrowbane where hmmm magnus is with an ex at the start and tries setting up Luke with people

well this got really cracky really fast

okay so im gonna go ahead and say that i have no idea how art school works in the US so for the sake of My Convenience™ imma go with the way it is in Brazil, which is "there are numerous kinds of arts going on in the same institute/college"

so im thinking..... clary obviously is doing visual arts, painting, whatever its called (this is probably where i should warn you that i know nothing about visual arts). maia is not really an arts major, but she's doing a course on technical/scientific drawing since shes a biology major and that's useful for her field studies. magnus is on the same course, except hes like an engineering major really. im a slut for inventor Magnus so yeah he wants to be an engineer to develop new kinds of technology so technical drawing is important for him. meliorn (watch me slip meliorn in literally everything i can) is a theatre major, and Luke and Maryse r both studying music

Luke and Maryse r older and like idk how common that is in the US but here in Brazil some ppl (spec retired ppl) come back to college to study something they have Always Wanted To but that wouldnt bring them money. i know that the whole "no free college" thing makes that harder but they can be post-graduates i guess. or Luke is and maryse is a regular major but shes a super rich hotshot lawyer who after the divorce decided to be less stuck up and dedicate herself to things she enjoys, and since shes rich, she has the money to do a major or a music course just for fun

anyway! Magnus is the kind of guy whos friends with everyone from all ages and courses. he quickly becomes friends with maia (shes on his course after all) and meliorn (who is a theatre major but takes classes in everything they can because.... they can)

i just realized maia/meliorn has a LOT of brotp potential but ok anyway

magnus and maia bond greatly over their shared interests (yeah shes a biologist and hes an engineer but magnus' interests vary a lot and also hes a fan of biochemistry. they also have relatively similar life stories and a similar sense of humor, even if maia is sharper at the edges - which is something Magnus likes, really. she's fierce and fun and unafraid and he wishes he were more like her sometimes. they have a mutual admiration and kind of protection pact). meliorn on the other hand is kind of the local queer cryptid in a way, which of course means magnus immediately befriends him, and Maia is just delighted at how much of a trickster they are. magnus also likes meliorn a lot because they're so... chill and easy and unbothered by social conventions to the point of being nearly unaware, which makes Magnus feel so comfortable. and meliorn thinks Magnus is interesting, and they all get along.

maia kind of brings luke into the group. luke is kind of maia's adoptive uncle. she lives alone but once she ran away from home luke was super nice and helpful and also one of the ppl who most encouraged her to go after her major like she wanted

luke and maia are clearly close and have each other's backs, but they also tease each other a lot. so when one day luke teases maia over her crush on clary, she retaliates by looking DIRECTLY at meliorn and being like "he's just jealous. did you ppl know he hasnt been on a single date in years" and meliorn, who thrives on the chaos, is like "oooh we should set him up" and magnus of course jumps at the opportunity

so the three of them keep trying to set ppl up with luke, and it just ...... never works. like doesnt come even close to working. its kind of a disaster actually. its awkward, it never clicks, and at this point luke is begging them to stop but you know thats not gonna happen. so as a last resort, luke lies that he's dating a woman from class. cue him asking maryse, whom hes never talked to in his life but is the only eligible woman his age at class, to like, please do him a solid. and maryse is just so shocked by this random (but handsome) man's life, shes like. lmao sure. look shes a post-divorce woman she wants to be free and cease giving fucks

and maryse kind of has fun pretending to date luke, but she's a busy woman and she doesnt hang out with them often, and they are like [BANGING POTS AND PANS] WE WANT TO ACTUALLY MEET HER

and luke is all like "well maybe if all of yall singles got dates we could have a date together otherwise get out" so maia asks clary out purely out of spite and turns out it works, but Magnus and Meliorn are like "uuuuhhhhh,,,,,,," so meliorn is like "what if we pretend to be together lmao" and Magnus is like shit we're gonna do that aren't we

i know its not exactly Magnus having an ex but look im struggling to put all of this together okay udhdhdbd also im not big on the whole "breaking up because of someone else" trope ya feel

god this is just the setup for malec to meet, im,,,, a mess

so anyway Magnus and Meliorn are determined to totally sell this to luke (maia knows its a scam of course, she can smell bullshit from miles away). and luke and maryse are also totally determined to sell this cuz everyone is an idiot. so they keep having, like,,,,, dates together, until eventually they kind of become a solid group of friends. they all welcome maryse and are really impressed by how critical she is of her pre-divorce self and how it did wonders for her, they think shes really strong. she even shares about how she struggled with her son being gay and her daughter deciding to become a forensic pathologist instead of a lawyer like her, you know. in short they all become good friends

so now everyone (but maia and clary who are happy and drama free and laughing their butts off at Magnus and Meliorn) is in a difficult situation because now theyre all friends! what are they gonna do, confess it was a scam all along? pretend to break up and make the whole thing awkward? they're trapped in their fake dating and it looks like they're just gonna have to, like ... deal with it

and in luke and maryse's situation it's even more complicated because they are kind of getting into each other, and theyre like groaning because theyre grown ass adults they shouldn't be living this trope. and yet

anyway as they become closer they start going to maryse's (shes the only one with a large enough place) and that's when Magnus meets Alec and meliorn meets izzy

which,,,,, despair

because they had been doing a great job of fake dating so far, excuse you, they are partners in crime. they're a well oiled lying machine and they work together flawlessly. magnus is not even a good liar but shit if meliorn didnt teach him every trick on how to not technically lie, and also they are very close and the kind of ppl who are comfortable with sharing affection, so yeah they drape their arms on each others shoulders and hold hands and kiss each others cheeks NO PROBLEM but now theyre both interested in someone else

okay so! shina woud def be fairytale au. as them being royalty, and probs betrothed… or maybe shiro saving tina from a dragon? except tina actually befriended the dragon that was just lonely and sick of being attacked and shit, and explained so to shiro, so shiro didnt harm the dragon, the dragon just became their friend and pet and everyone truly lived happily ever after

tince coffee shop au!! lance works at the coffee shop, tina is there often because she likes the coffee and its a cute quiet cozy place she feels comfortable in so she comes in whether to do work or just spend some time, esp when shes in a bad or depressive mood and she needs to be away from home but somewhere she feels safe. lance always cheers her up and he always knows what to say without going overboard and making her uncomfortable! lance doesnt want to be too bold so he never gives her his number but one day she comes in and she tries to be chill but its obvious shes crumbling from depression and whatever happened at home so she just slumps over an armchair and orders the usual with a weak voice and just keeps her head down and just kind of tries not to cry and breakdown there and then, and lance gets it and does super cute latte art and gives her her favourite pastry even if its not her usual because its more expensive, and he pays everything for her, and asks someone to cover for him for a few minutes (and uses up his break for that, pretty much) and joins her and likes the way she lights up at the sight of the pastry, and when lance tells her that the bill is already been taken care of, and he tries to ask her whats wrong and she doesnt reply but she folds up a little more and looks away so its obvious she doesnt want to talk about it, so lance casually changes subject like “you know whats wrong in my life?” and dramatically retells of like something super stupid that happened, probably with his siblings, and makes her laugh and cheers her up and never leaves her alone, for the entirety of his break (that his coworkers make as long as they can before they need him back or theyll die, but their coffee shop isnt usually busy so thats good luck), and just takes her mind off of stuff and makes her feel better and she? appreciates it so much. and when hes like “ah man they need me back, theres not enough lance for everyone! ill see you later, sweetcake” but before he can leave she calls to him and just thanks him and hes like, “im always here for a cute girl like you” and winks at her before going back to work.

she finishes her coffee and before leaving she writes her number on a piece of paper and when she brings her cup and plate back she also leaves the paper, making sure lance sees it, and leaves.

(or… alteans whatever) and shes told repeatedly to not contact the humans but she decides to take secret trips to the beach anyway ofc. she sees from far away allura, sitting on the beach humming and enjoying the dawn with her feet in the water and she looks so calm and so pretty that tina decides that, since no one else is around, she wants to try and get closer! allura is at first confused about who would be out in the water at that time, but she then sees her tail and is so excited?? and tina at first is scared but allura still has a calming aura so she explains with a soft voice that she wont hurt her, shes just never seen someone like her, is she a mermaid? so tina slowly gets closer and nods, and they end up talking a lot about each others kingdoms and cultures because theyre both curious people, and tina never gets caught and allura is smart about how to avoid being caught and respects tinas wish of not being known to anyone else so she keeps it to herself, but they meet most nights at the beach and sometimes they play around, but mostly they talk. and they never end up married or anything, in my idea of this au, but they do end up having really strong romantic feelings for each other, so they decide to start dating. and its all a secret and all, but they meet often, and tina gives her a special seashell they can literally call with whenever they cant see each other or alluras on a trip or if they just want to hear each others voice during the day, and they definitely have good morning calls!!! and allura is a princess so she needs to marry for her kingdom, but it is always clear to everyone in the kingdom - and to alluras spouse - that it is not a love marriage, just a marriage for the good of the kingdom, and her spouse is a good friend and confidant (although theyre never told about tina either) and they respect it and alluras such a good queen anyway that no one doubts the ability for her and her spouse to be good rulers without being actually romantically involved. so allura still secretly dates tina and tina knows of this and shes?? so touched that allura still wants to date her and didnt want to forget about her to have a love marriage?? tina loves her so much. she just peppers her with kisses so much for a good deal of nights. theyre happy and in love and dating is enough for both of them

Outdoor Voices Comparison Review + Q&A

I had you guys send in questions for my Outdoor Voices review and whew were there a lot!! Thank you guys so much for sending those in. I hopefully covered everything you need to know about the different styles of tops and bottoms of OV I own!

In Red: TechSweat Crop Top / TechSweat 7/8 Leggings

In Grey: Athena Crop / 7/8 Warmup Leggings (high rise version) 

I'll be the first to admit that I don't like paying a lot of money for workout clothes. And for some reason ALL of them are so expensive! So I was introduced to Outdoor Voices during one of their sample sales in the city. I had heard all the hype so I wanted to check to see what it was all about. I kind of went in blind and picked up anything that was in my size and walked out. Tried out a size M in everything except for one pair of leggings I bought in a L (which were too big for me).

I went home and tried them on and over the next few weeks tried them out in my workout classes. I had two TechSweat crops (which are the same as the red padded bra above) and two pairs of the 7/8 warmup leggings (like the grey above). And almost instantly, I was pretty hooked.

Then came the holidays and they had their Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale and I snagged some more goodies and in the new year they had one last sale and thats when the obsession really became real. OV had taken over my workout wardrobe and I found myself constantly reaching for them and eventually getting rid of a ton of other leggings!

TechSweat Crop (bra): I get why they want to call it a crop top but really it's a long bra. And it's my favorite thing out of all my Outdoor Voices. It's inanely comfortable, it fits in all the right places and has cups! There are some cons as well, which we'll talk about below, but overall I give this an A!

Sizing: I wear a M but could probably go with a small. If you're in between sizes, size down. It is very stretchy so you'll be good! I personally don't like my tops too tight so the extra room is what I like. I'm a M/6 in tops and a 34DD in bras.

Great For: Lounging, Barre, Yoga, Pilates 

Pros:

High Neckline -- I love how high this part is. For the larger chested girls you'll be with me on this! The last thing I want is to be worrying about overflowing or popping out during workout. Now I can do planks and mountain climbers without issue.

Coverage -- The way this bra is cut around the front, top, sides and back is flattering for any body type (IMO) -- especially for mine! I find my back is much more likely to roll over than my front and this bra does a great job of covering all of that up!

Comfort -- Like I said above, this bra is really comfortable. It's very stretchy and breathable which I like a lot when working out. This also becomes my go-to bra when I'm lounging around at home because it gives me just the right amount of support without being too much. 

Cons:

The Cups -- So this only happens in one of my three TechSweat bras but the cups can get rolled up in the wash and become indented (or heavily wrinkled) so it looks weird through the bra. It shows through and can just like you have winkled boobs lol. But again, this only happens in one of them so to be safe I just take out the cups before wash!

Not For High Impact -- I know this is a bra and it has cups but it is not for any high impact workouts like running or jumping. At least not for girls with a larger chest. But I may be a bit biased in this department because I need really supportive bras (like my go-to wacoal bra)

Arm Holes -- I will admit these are large but I'm not sure if I think that because I could size down or if they are really too large. I find myself pulling them up in yoga (when I'm moving upside down a lot) and in Barre but never enough to the point where I'm annoyed by it.

TechSweat Leggings: (2018 version) So when I went to link these I found that they came out with a new version that has a different waist band. I'm reviewing the version from 2018 that doesn't have a back pocket and has a small white band you can adjust (that I don't) in the front.

Sizing: I wear a M (my normal size) but could probably get away with a small because of how stretchy these are. I'm a 29/L/8 in bottoms.

Great For: High impact, Running, Lounging, Barre, Yoga, Pilates, Dance

Pros:

Comfort -- Like the top, these pants are insanely comfortable. They move with you and very breathable. The bottom two pros kind of fall into this category (or at least help it!) so you can get what I'm saying.

Cooling -- The TechSweat material makes it very cooling for when you're hot and sweaty after workout. It will never over heat you or trap in heat during workout. Not ideal for commuting in winter because it's cold but will be especially great in the summer and hot yoga!

Stretchy -- I just love how stretchy the material is. Going back to the comfort aspect, you can do any move in them without worry and without restriction. In the colors I have, they all pass the squat test but can see how if they are already tight they may not (I've gotten messages saying they don't).

Cons:

Thin -- this goes with the cooling and stretchy material, but these leggings are thin in material. Not as in they are see through but more in the fact that they show lines from underwear. All of the undergarments I wear are hanky panky style and you can see bumps and lines through the pants. Something that annoyed me at first but I eventually got over. A few lines wont stop me from wearing these pants!

Waistband -- This style has a bit of a wonky waistband (which, I assume, is why they updated it for 2019) where it kind of puckers around the top. It has this weird white stretchy band inside (pictured above) that I think doesn't help the situation but I assume is there to help the pants stay up. Because they are so stretchy, and possibly because I could size down, the waistband does fall some. Not an annoying amount but there will definitely be times where I need to readjust during class.

Short -- These are the only leggings from OV that are shorter than the rest and I'm not sure why! It's not end of the world short but they are a couple inches shorter than the 7/8 leggings. 

Athena Crop (bra): This is their most popular style and I can see why. It's a great material that is thick so you don't show through and feel supported but thin enough (read: not lined) so it doesn't feel heavy. In terms of support it's MUCH more supportive than the TechSweat but still not something I would personally wear for HIT or dance classes where I'm jumping around a lot. But again, I'm very sensitive to that and require heavy duty support!

Sizing: I wear a M and think it fits great. I'm a M/6 in tops and a 34DD in bras.

Great For: Lounging, Barre, Yoga, Pilates 

Pros:

Comfort -- Again, very comfortable and a bra I like to wear around the house when I'm home. It's a different kind of comfort from the TechSweat as the materials are so different but it's still super comfortable. It holds you in and makes you feel secure without trying to suffocate you.

Length -- Like the TechSweat above, I like the length on this bra/crop. It comes down low enough that I feel good about the amount of coverage I have between the top and the bottoms. Less skin to roll over is always a good thing!

Thickness -- This material is a compression style material and with that the thickness makes it feel very heavy duty. Not in the sense that it's hot or heavy (it's very light!) but in the sense that you'll feel totally fine and comfortable wearing a bra without any cups. No headlights peeking through!

Cons:

Not For High Impact -- Again, not for high impact for me at least. Nothing with jumping (like my 305 classes) but when I do burpees or mountain climbers in my other classes I have no issue. It is more supportive than the TechSweat I believe because it doesn't stretch as much so there's really no where for them to go. I think in terms of high coverage support, these would be great for girls with smaller chests.  

Tight (not in the way you think) -- The material, like the leggings, is a compression style. So they will hold you in and not move much. With this, it will flatten your chest. This can be a pro for some and a con for others -- honestly I'm in the middle on this. I don't mind it because I'm not trying to be super curvy in class. It doesn't hurt or make anything uncomfortable, just something to note!

Armpit Cut -- the armpit cuts are kind of low on the front. It doesn't bother me personally but I have friends who complain about some armpit fat hanging over. Just felt like I needed to mention it!

7/8 Warmup Leggings: I feel like these were really the leggings that got me into Outdoor Voices. They are so different than most of the workout leggings I own and I really like them for that reason. They hold you in and I just feel good when I wear them. They come high waisted and stay high waisted which I very much love. 

Sizing: I wear a M (my normal size) and they are tight. If you are in-between sizes, I would suggest sizing up. I'm a 29/L/8 in bottoms.

Great For: Lounging, Barre, Pilates

Pros:

Compression -- If you want a legging that will suck you in and keep you put, these are them! The compression is so good (almost too good, see below) that when you're in - you're in. Not moving shaking or stepping out of place in these which I love. Especially around the tummy area!

Stays Put -- Like above, they stay in one place once you have them on. I don't ever feel like these really fall down since they can be so tight and compressing. Really great for classes like Barre and Pilates.

Squat Proof -- The opaqueness of these leggings are great. You can't see through them no matter how far they may stretch! 

Cons:

Compression -- Sometimes they can just be too tight. I don't like wearing them to yoga because I need to be able to move more. Same thing to bed, I don't like wearing them to sleep because they can be too tight over time. There is a time and place for compression and I don't think those are the times!

Hard To Put On -- Because of the compression aspect, they can be difficult to put on -- especially when you first get them in. I feel like they do stretch out over time which helps but it's very minimal. I feel like it's the same kind of stretch you get with shoes. They stretch to your body and shape but never go past that. They really only get better with wear!

Can Show Sweat -- One of the biggest concerns I got from my Q&A is if any of these show sweat. YES they all do! All workout clothes show sweat and sweating, especially during workout is NOTHING to be ashamed of. No one is judging you for sweating during a workout. I do believe that a lot of it has to do with the color of item you're wearing but just wanted to note that of these and the TechSweat, the warmup leggings show sweat more. 

FAQ: (answered all of them above, but for a quick hit here are the most commonly asked questions!)

Squat Test: I have never had any issues with either styles! They pass the squat test for me (the warmups more so than the TechSweat)

Sizing: I'm a M in all workout clothes and an 8 in Lulu. I wear a M in OV but for more in-depth details, please read the sizing blurbs above!

OV compared to Lululemon: I don't own anything Lulu so I can't compare, I'm sorry!

Sweat Test: Lighter colors will show sweat no matter what you do. The TechSweat is better about not showing than the warmups/athena but all will show sweat (hot yoga makes everything show). Compared to cheaper brands (like Old Navy), the OV do a good job at hiding it than most.

Reacting to Sweet/Vicious

Part I: Remember Fondly When 4th Meals Were a Thing and Breakfast at Night Reigned Supreme

The Setup: It started, as much does, with a tweet. That tweet was followed, as many are, by regret. Fortunately, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is a generous sort.

Robinson’s glorious but short-lived vigilante dramedy Sweet/Vicious was always on the list of candidates for an all-hands Reaction -- Miri started watching a day or two after Kris did, back in the fall, so Liz and Marchae added it to their (lengthy) to-watch lists -- but we didn’t put a timetable on it until our loyal reader @crazyhannibalthedaisiesslayer suggested it.

In this post (and its continuation, on Friday), we cover the first three episodes: “The Blueprint,” “The Writing’s on the Wall,” and “Sucker,” and many thoughts and feelings about campus sexual violence and related topics.

LIZ: I am IN LOVE. I thought episode one was amazing and I am pretty much hooked. I am here for the message and the premise and i think every college campus needs these 2 ladies!

MARCHAE: however the characters are 100% engaging and you want them to win so hard...

I called my mom after episode one and was like should i feel bad for wanting to see the guys get beat up

LIZ: The way they show the victims of sexual assault and discuss their stories is just so real even though the show suspends our disbelief in other ways so much

MIRI:  Marchae, I don’t think you should feel bad

How do you feel about how stylized it is? I love it, but I feel like it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea

LIZ:  Rapists who are getting away with it 100% and ruining their victims lives? no I would not feel bad

KRIS: When I first saw trailers for it (while my old roommates watched MTV reality shows) I was like oh, man, I don’t know, this seems like it might be trashy and exploitative

MARCHAE:  I do agree Lizzie... it’s weird because my brain wants this to be a straight drama

yet i am oddly satisfied with the moments of comedic relief

LIZ: I didn’t think the stylization was OVER THE TOP

MIRI: Yeah, it’s a hard show to sell but SO GOOD

LIZ: right, but that kind of mentality and characterization of college aged women who are friends with other women in the form of a sorority is so widespread

MIRI: The pilot honestly does SO much to characterize Jules, Ophelia, and Harris so quickly

KRIS: I do really like how they initially lean into the less generous expectations about sororities and then flesh out I think all of those characters in great ways

Mackenzie was a sleeper favorite for me

LIZ: this gives them facets.. like fuck what you thought about me and also.. I don’t have to not like to do my makeup or sometimes dress up for me to be a smart or valid female.

MIRI: I feel like Kennedy takes a little longer, but not in a bad way

LIZ: i don’t know many shows that give girls that kind of credit.. very legally blonde of this show..except Elle Woods was the exception there

MARCHAE: They have to save Kennedy (I say this not Having seen more than 4 epi)

LIZ: Visually, I am impressed with the shows set designs, makeup, and wardrobe

MARCHAE: I feel like they have to hold her close because of nick and Jules

have such amazing looks and their hair is bouncy like they are comic book drawings, but their makeup isn’t like that (bc that would be fucking bizarre) and I love how the fresh rosy-cheeked and bright eyed look of Jules is enhanced with her makeup and Ophelia’s brows and eye makeup are dark and defined/ grungy at times, but she is also kind of sweet because they don’t cake her up or give her a heavy lip.. idk if that makes sense to anyone else

and then they’re important because of the ninja outfits

MIRI: That all makes sense to me and I would never have thought of it at all

KRIS: it is right on the edge of my comprehension

MIRI: Sidebar: SUPER excited for you to see more Orphan Black and discuss that makeup

LIZ: but I am pleased with the fine line between real world and cartoonish that the MUA on this show kind of stride beautifully to give them unique looks that foil one another and bring out their strengths and sometimes their faults

MARCHAE: but you get a lot in terms of wardrobe via colors that they use for these characters... Ophelia is almost always in darks, Jules in pinks and pastels

I mean she did a shit ton of research, and the producers watched The Hunting Ground and stuff

MARCHAE: But these choices are interesting because they are almost opposite to the characters we meet in the show

LIZ: and the fact that Jules keeps her identity even as a vigilante with her pink backpack

MARCHAE: so Jules we meet as the original vigilante and she’s the one in the brightest colors ALWAYS in the show

LIZ: and then Ophelia has that car!

MARCHAE: that backpack is definitely our hint

MIRI: Because she’s trying SO hard to still be that girl

KRIS: Oh that’s so interesting. Jules is super dark and “damaged” and Ophelia’s ultimately a sweetheart.

MARCHAE: and Ophelia is always in darks

MIRI: I like that even when they put Jules in the Spitters are Quitters shirt, it’s light colored

MARCHAE: so its totally the opposite of what we see

in terms of how they are portrayed in their “normal life”

LIZ: I find Ophelia to be much more innocent.. not because of being sexually assaulted, but because she is kind of playing catch up and barfs when she kills a guy and Jules obviously took this mission upon herself to become a kick ass fighter and to start doing something

LIZ: they are all different and some are even charming (most are) and they have different personalities and hobbies.. like Nate is acting like a really good boyfriend to Kennedy so if we didn’t know what he’s capable of, we’d forgive his jerk reaction to her missing his football thing bc of his super sweet apology

MIRI: Well, it’s Darlington University, right?

KRIS: Well A) that doesn’t actually strike me as unrealistic but B) I got the sense of a “backlog” of assaults -- they’re using that wall, which was started who knows how long ago

MIRI: So it’s at least big enough to have masters programs

KRIS: not responding to like the student weekly or something

MIRI: True

LIZ: i mean i know so many people in so many schools (large, small, medium and very small) who all have sexual assault stories

MARCHAE: thanks for the wall reminder

MARCHAE: I think maybe again its the dissonance of this being a drama/comedy that has me a bit jarred

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa tfw u have another game idea AGAIN i think my brain hollowed itself out for more idea space at the expense of everything else like ability to actually create my ideas or ability to remember to eat :P

this kinda isnt a NEW idea, its just something floating around in my brain that ive now got more of a concrete idea for, i guess? playing Oxygen Not Included reminded me of it and made me feel maybe people would actually be interested in it, yknow? and its probably not something i could ACTUALLY make, cos it’d require like.. a lot of my own programming. not really easy to just make in a helpful gamemaker enginey thing like rpgmaker. tho it is an rpg... kinda...?? ehhhh im not feeling very good today, sorry my writing is... bad

ANYWAY WHAT WAS I SAYING

Well the idea I has was for kind of a roguelike tower climbing rpg, like Azure Dreams or Persona 3 The premise would be that there’s a mysterious underground civilization, trapped for generations with no memory of the surface world. Between them and sunlight is this potentially-infinate magical labyrinth that nobody has managed to make it through. (At least as far as anyone knows. Everyone wants to believe that friends who dissappeared in the labyrinth actually made it to the other side, rather than.. well.. the other side.) So the game would be about tackling this labyrinth in multiple short sessions. My favourite genre: roguelikes that actually have some form of progression in them! Even though you’re dying a lot, you retain a small amount of what you gathered each time in the form of townbuilding progressyness and ~friendship routes~ and ~ETCETERA~!

But then after playing Oxygen Not Included I kinda have a burning desire to see a game that has the good bits of that and not the... Frustration. To say its a roguelike without progression is understating it, gahhhhhhhhhh! Roguelike sim game of 8 hour game sessions that get destroyed cos of one stupid mistake and you have to be all perfect and lucky and YOURE ALWAYS STARVING and gahhhhhhhhh THIS IS MEANT TO BE MY GAME IDEA NOT VENTING ABOUT THAT GAME Anyway I was thinking how it’d be really cool if a game like that actually DID have a sense of progression. And an actual end goal. Like.. if you were actually digging towards the surface! With periodic savepoints and characters that dont die so easily and have more personality to them and you get all attatched! I already got all attatched to my dumb sim characters and then just got really upset how they kept dying and the game seemed to not give a shit :P

But yeah its not like I can just completely copy that game, lol. Even if I wanted to, I dunno how to program a simulation type engine thing from scratch! So i was thinking like.. a regular roguelike randomized dungeon generator actually IS possible in Rpgmaker, so I dunno.. I could find a way to make that work with some kind of ‘you are actually creating the dungeon’ type thing. i really like the idea of being able to dig your own path through the thing and have it permenantly etched there forever. I was thinking it could be an awesome idea if in the postgame you could come back to the now-empty labyrinth after everyone’s escaped to the surface, and be able to walk through it and have a big ol nostalgia trip. One that’d be unique to every player! And like.. maybe even be able to see changes, like it being reclaimed by nature and flowers? And you could upload a dungeon seed for your own personal dungeon, so that other players could play it, and that could be the postgame replay value~!

and I was thinking the protagonists could be two kids and be a grumpy older sibling who’s a jerk to their well-meaning-but-immature lil sib, but loves them deep down, and has to learn a lesson about becoming a more responsible sib, and etc like.. yeah.. basically inspired by over the garden wall i didnt really like that show, and i felt bad about it cos everyone was telling me it was a masterpiece. alas! :P aaanyhoo they’re not very developed yet, except older sib being a bit of a comical greedy coward type of person and lil sib actually being quite wise but always underestimated. Like, they have more common sense than their big sib even though they are a lil naive sometimes cos theyre so optimistic. Both sibs get each other into trouble pretty often, but they balance out perfectly to save each other each time! And lil sib is kind of a pushover who just obeys big sib unquestionably and can never stick up for themself when big sib is being all ‘ugh ur so immature im totally better'. They’re just like... the sort of person who’s so scared of their friends leaving them that they let anyone hurt them as much as they want as long as they stay. Very relateable to Bunni! Also they sorta try and pretend to be the dumb sidekick and class clown. Cos again theyre worried if they disagree or try and stand out too much then their sibling will hate them. Quite often their ‘dumb mistakes’ are actually the older sib’s fault, and they’re stuck like ‘AAAA I CANT TELL THEM TO STOP COS ITD BE OUT OF CHARACTER. I NEED TO BE THE CUTE BABY.’ And its all super complicated cos older sib acts like they resent them for never growing up too, its like.. cant ever win. This whole thing has kinda turned them into an anxious mess deep down. part of big sib’s whole redemption arc would involve them having to realise that their actions arent harmless, and treating such a young child this way actually has a permenant effect. And like... big sib doesnt know how to take care of little sib on their own because they’re immature themself! Being able to admit that instead of trying so hard to be all fake ultra mature and infallible, thats another big character arc. As well as aknowledging that lil sib is indeed growing up and becoming someone intelligent and independant. And realizing that the reason they keep putting them down is so they can try and deny that, and the reason they’re denying it because theyre JEALOUS! Jealous that little sib might have their emotions more alltogether than them, scared that their emotionless facade of perfect big sibness will be broken, and scared that without that they’ll have nothing left. Need to become more comfortable with trusting and relying on your lil sib, need to actually talk to them about this stuff, yo! Ideally I’m gonna try and write it in a way that doesnt make big sib seem like a completely hateable villain. Their backstory is gonna involve being from not exactly the nicest family, and both struggling to escape what they’ve been shaped into. And trying to learn how to take care of each other as a real family, when they have no real frame of reference for what real love looks like. And also climbing a bigass tower to save humanity from being entombed underground, but that’s comparatively easy, lol! But yeah the idea is that big sib kinda absorbed more of their bad parents’s ideals, and like... they love their sibling so utterly and deeply because they just did not know what family love felt like until they came along. And it really REALLY hurts them whenever they realise they’ve been subconciously being neglectful or hateful towards the lil fella, but theyre so distracted by like.. the greed of being free now. And doing anything and everything, drunk on that freedom! And not really being capable yet of caring about other people when they havent even learned how to care about themself. They keep being all decadent and delinquent and it seems like theyre egotistical but still deep down they HATE themself and this is all just like a ‘fake it til you make it’. And its so easy to get caught up and go too far to try and put on this facade, and they feel they cant really vent their real feelings to anyone. Cos they’re super cynical dont trust anyone except sibling loyalty like. Only way to survive! And like... cant talk about it with the sib either, because little kid wouldnt understand, and if they do then that means theyre not little anymore. They dont wanna ruin lil sib’s childish innocence cos like.. that innocence is their only reason to live. Innocent stupid bastion of family love, came into their life and gave them the courage to deal with those shitty parents gahhh! And part of them ‘knows’ that the only way to love anyone is to be deluded and innocent. You have to be too stupid to realise that the world is awful and everyone sucks and loving people just gets you hurt! And big sib is toooootally smart cos they know that life is meaningless. But they’re entertained by seeing a stupid person stupidly believe in optimism. Totally. Thats the only reason they wanna protect that innocence. Totally. sooooo basically imagine a very mentally ill mess of a preteen that’s curled up in the corner crying perpetually within their own mind, while on the outside they’re all HA HA I’M AMAZING, BITCHES And also imagine that bunni is able to write good enough to explain these damn characters aaaa im very tired im sorry

anyway summary: protagonist is a jerk, Character Development: The Game, you will cry for little sib whom is basically like penny from inspector gadget also I was thinking maybe this could be the one and only time I do the Amnesiac Protagonist Cliche Setup. eeeexcept not really?? well i mean I think it’d work cool if these characters were new to this setting, but I wouldnt actually do 100% amnesia thing I was thinking more like... they are the only two people who came from the outside world. And they just can’t remember how they got here, they wake up trapped in this place and everyone thinks theyre crazy for talking about being from somewhere aboveground. So you have an even more desperate motivation to escape compared to everyone else! I mean of course everyone wants to return to the surface, but its been so long that no-one remembers what it’s like, and so many attempts have failed that they’ve all given up. So you can act like a beacon of hope and lead the people even though you’re just a child. Like, this is about a morally bankrupt trash protagonist being dragged kicking and screaming into heroism, lol And of course we can have some good ‘ol mystery amnesia reveal type plot thingies! But without having to have a protagonist who’s COMPLETELY clueless, and a game beginning with no direction whatsoever. Its more like a ‘trapped in another world’ story except its the same world just a few thousand miles underground, lol. And revealing how exactly they got there and what they’ve forgotten is gonna be a plot, yes, but also there’s the bigger mystery of what on earth this doom labyrinth is and what caused these poor people to be trapped in it! And what they’ll even find when they finally reach the surface again, will it really be the sort of paradise they’re all hoping for? also many tears for sad dysfunctional tiny family of awkward childrens, ye also (hopefully) fun dungeon gameplays

My car was stolen on Saturday. >I recently met up with Paris Visone, a Boston-based documentary photographer who for the last seven years has traveled with several rock bands shooting live performances and the behind-the-scenes of life on the road. She’s currently touring with New Found Glory, half way through their NFG 20 Year Tour. We talked backstage at the House of Blues in Las Vegas, Nevada.

–Where are you from originally?

“I’m from Boston, but I lived in Florida for a while. I moved back to Boston for college, so I’m a hybrid. I’m in Boston now, and I like it except for the snow.”

–How did you get started in Photography?

“This is a weird story - me and my mom were watching Entertainment Tonight, I was 11, and I was super into Hanson. they were doing a day in the life of Hanson, and they were at a show, doing a photo shoot… They were having such a good time at the photo shoot, I was like, that’s it! I need to become a photographer so I can hang out with Hanson and have a great time. I began taking pictures of my sister and cousins, posed like Hanson. That’s when it started. I just got little disposable cameras and started taking pictures. That kind of turned into a documentary photography thing, and then I took it in high school. I went to college and got into the more documentary side of photography, then sort of went to the band side. So, a mixture.”

–Did you learn to work in a darkroom (before digital)?

“I did all of that. Right when I finished school is the year that they got rid of the darkroom, so it was perfect timing. I learned all of that stuff, which I think is important, and it’s kind of a bummer that they’re getting rid of it. It’s kind of a hipster thing now. I still have a 4”x5” (large format) camera that I use sometimes.”

–So you studied documentary photography in school?

“Yeah, it was my major. I was basically documenting my family the whole time, and I still do. I should have a book coming out this year. I’m starting to get it together now, which is a process. So many photos, it’s insane. Thats my full time job when I’m home.”

–Where did you go to school for photography?

“I went to the Art Institute of Boston, at Lesley University. It was cool because I didn’t have to do a foundation arts year, I went straight into photography, which is why I chose that school. I got out of school in 2008 - technically 2009 because I might have failed an art history class or two that I had to make up…”

–How long have you been shooting bands?

“I’ve been on the road since 2010, so seven years. My first real tour was with Blondie, which was awesome, it was really sick.”

–So pretty soon afterward college you were on tour

“Yeah, I was trying to figure it out for 6 months or a year, and then… boom”

–Did photography come first and then rock music?

“My dad was super into rock music and we were always listening to the radio and watching MTV. I was going to shows when I was young because he would take me. My first show was Hanson. We were living in Florida at that point. He took me to a bunch of shows with bands I work for now, which is really funny. I actually have pictures of me with the bands, because we used to stand out by the bus. It’s awkward now to look at those.”

–Have you shown them to the bands?

“A couple, but it’s embarrassing. I wish I could have told myself then, ‘just don’t worry, you’ll be awesome. They’ll be your friends.’”

–How did you get hooked up on your first gig with Blondie?

“That was actually through going to shows. When I was 16, we went to a Papa Roach show, they were my favorite band.”

–Did you used to sneak cameras in?

“No I didn’t, actually. I was just there as a fan, I loved the music. My stepmom took me, and her friend started dating one of the guys who was on the tour. He started a company that did meet-and-greets and photography, and I kept in touch with him all the time because he was into photography too. He called and asked if I wanted to go on tour with bands and take photos, and I was like ‘yeah dude, of course!’ That was the thing. Everyone’s like, ‘how did you do it?’ and it’s like ‘I was at a show when I was 16, and I kept in touch with this guy…’ Everyone thinks it’s a quick thing, but so many things have to line up to make it happen. There’s not a ladder to climb.”

–You can happen into it, or you can work your ass off. Ask anyone on the crew how they got there, they each have a different story, from “my brother got me in” to “I went to college for audio engineering”

–Do you have any mentors in this, or did you figure it out on your own?

“The music side, not really. I was doing the meet-and-greet stuff, and then I started taking behind the scenes photos without anyone telling me to or asking me to. I didn’t really even ask if I could, I just let it flow. I feel like I snuck in the back door to be able to do that sort of thing. As far as a mentor… I like documentary photographers in general, that’s my thing. Music photographers, I don’t know. I kind of like to not look at other music stuff because I feel like I have my own style, and I don’t want to mimic other people. I want to focus on what’s going on.”

–Who are some of your favorites?

“I’m on Instagram, and I just follow people there at this point. I love David Carol. I just like old school documentary street photography sort of thing. I remember pictures more than I remember photographer’s names, that’s my problem - I have a photographic memory, literally.”

–How did you hook up with New Found Glory?

“My boyfriend was friends with Ian the bass player a while ago. I saw them a few times, and then I was in Australia with Godsmack, and New Found was playing a block over. So I hit up Ian, and I had never hung out with him before alone, just through my boyfriend. I’ve always liked New Found Glory - spoiler alert, don’t tell them. When are you ever in the same place at the same time, and it was in Australia, down the street. My boyfriend’s band, Protagonist, went on tour with them last year, and that’s when I really hung out with them more and got to know them. They saw what I was doing with my boyfriend’s band - promotion, social media, all that stuff. So they asked me to go out on Warped tour that year.”

–What’s next after this, do you have something lined up?

“I’m working on my book when I get home, and I’m shooting a couple music videos. As for tours, nothing yet. Next year should be crazy with Godsmack. So, I’m kind of trying to stay home for a bit and doing some freelance work. I like making music videos, they’re fun, because you feel a big sense of accomplishment when you’re done with it. The book is a whole big project too. If something pops up, I will be doing it, but right now I’m liking that there’s not anything.”

–What is your market for the music videos, the band’s website, or promotion, both?

“It’s mainly Youtube, I think for most people, even huge bands. They have millions and millions of views and make some money off of that. It’s weird because everyone’s creating so much content now for the internet, and there’s no real payback to it, it’s all sort of marketing. It definitely shifted what content creation is used for. I think it’s cool. Content and music is free now, and the only thing that people are paying for is a live experience or merchandise.”

–It’s funny because five, ten years ago people were saying that the concert industry was dying. Now, if bands want to make money, they have to tour. So there is some expansion in the industry. The internet and free music has made it a necessity.

“It (touring) has the added expense now that you need a ‘Me’ on tour now. If you’re not showing people what you’re doing, you might as well not be doing it. You know what I mean?”

–Do you post during the shows?

“Yeah, I’ll do live streams a lot, which are really cool. You’ll have a thousand people in an actual room, but then another five hundred watching it live (online). You could be doubling your audience at some point. Obviously it’s just on a little screen, and it’s not the same, but people love it. You’re there, it’s live.”

–Do you set up a static camera on a tripod and keep shooting still photos?

“No, it’s just on the phone, I hold the phone up - it’s kind of the only way to do it right now until they come up with a better way.”

–So you do one or the other

“Yeah, I plan out my set like that. I’ll take the set list and switch it up every day. I’ll just do one song. You can’t give it all away.”

–Do you livestream through Facebook?

“I’ll do Facebook and Instagram, both. Facebook is cool because it stays up, Instagram goes away. But that’s cool too - If you were there, you were there. If not, you missed it.”

–Do you schedule your livestreams, do you publish times in advance?

“No, I just let it flow. They get a notification, and if they’re lucky enough to catch it, boom. If you want to see the whole thing, go to the show!”
