I am an ann defender 4 lyfe. I do think she's actually really critical to how the phantom thieves navigate literally the rest of the story because of her decision to let Kamoshida live. I wish her anger and the way she deals with it was explored more in her SL. I know people thinks she drops off after the first arc and I understand but you can literally never make me hate her. I played p5 and that first arc in a really vulnerable time in my life and ann has been the thing that's stuck with me since the damn thing came out. nobody knows how much i love her except for me

bully akechi. i love my little rat so much. somebody put him in a better wardrobe. he needs to be studied. put in a blender. quite possibly destroyed. sure does he suffer enough in the story? yeah plenty. but i think he should suffer more and be nursed back to health.

okay as I recap this I am gonna try to navigate my emotions

Oh its the Fortune Arcana boss from Persona 3 but not as good! But the whole point is Sae's cheating anyway so it's not supposed to be fair or fun, that's fine. After proving she's cheating, she turns into her monster form.

She looks like if the SAW movies were a person, jesus christ.

Anyway, lets get to the meat of the situation; the big escape.

Even though Sae's treasure was stolen and the Palace Ruler has been defeated, the casino is not coming apart like normal. (Which is because the treasure they're taking is a decoy, but more on that later.)

And finally we return to the cold open, which admittedly: I fucking loved this. I love that nothing is changed at all, it's just the same sequence again, but now you have context for what the fuck is happening. Now the face the player can use their persona makes sense, now the presence of shadows in a 'real' location makes sense, everything comes together.

No matter how I fall on my opinion on this game, I have been convinced that Joker is the best protagonist of any of these games. With the unfortunate exception to the lack of Gay Options he gets, he is an enormous improvement from P4MC in every metric. I know who this character is, even absent my own input, and he's weird and funny and kind of a huge bitch and salty as the Dead Sea.

This sequence becomes such a victory lap. Like, I'm still figuring out how I feel about the Whole Thing, but this moment of handing the player control and going "Hey, remember this?" and letting them fucking RACE to the end in the hopes of finally figuring out what the fuck is going on, it's a pretty clever trick. /slow claps for the devs

Also: Kasumi has the worst mask of everyone in this game by far. Every time i see it I wanna give her literally anything else.

That's really fucking smart honestly. Like, I sussed out Akechi because I'm the audience and I know tropes and story structure so it absolutely had to be Akechi. (Also there were a lot of other hints.) But I'm happy there was a hard piece of evidence for the characters that was more concrete than "have you MET him, he's a murderer."

As everyone and their dog guessed, when Futaba grabbed Akechi's phone, she slapped one of her wiretaps on there. That part's easy.

After that is where things get tricky.

The last thing Reverie does as Sae leaves the room is convince her to take his phone with her and to show it to Akechi.

I am completely convinced that no one in this game has met the real Goro Akechi. Not Sae, not Shido, not anyone. That facade is made of four layers of reinforced cement and the windows are all mirrored glass. He's kind of the inversion of Adachi, who looked like there wasn't a since thought bouncing around in his vacant gaze. Akechi is nothing but loud thoughts, but the container is soundproofed.

Also, it occurs to me right here that someone is directing Akechi, someone has a hand on that leash, and I wanna know what the hell keeps Akechi from spinning around and killing that guy.

Anyway, Sae shows Akechi the phone, he's like ?????? whatever? and they part ways.

Akechi waltzes in, deep-sixes the guard with his own gun, and shoots Reverie in the head.

The funniest part of the P4 Akechi AU is he’s really good at following the breadcrumbs of the mystery because he starts watching the Midnight Channel a day or so before Yu arrives, thus he sees Mayumi Yamano there. And then since he’s stuck being Yu’s roomie at the Dojima house, he sees that hand go into the TV. And he gets both jealous and super motivated to figure out WTF is going on, has already told Kanji about the Midnight Channel so he starts watching before Yukiko even gets kidnapped, and the two of them are kinda trying to make sense of it all independent of the main investigation team while Akechi is very salty Yu won’t take him to the TV world for his safety and shit (don’t patronize him, Narukami, he isn’t helpless and he can handle this ‘dark side of himself’ just fine)... And he figures something out that the others don’t even realize until much later- how to GET the power. Where it comes from... because you don’t get headaches from handshakes and a similar headache preceded Yu sticking his hand in the TV so he connects the dots. ....yet he views Adachi as so incompetent that he doesn’t even consider how sus it is that he was Yamano’s bodyguard and thus dismisses Adachi as a threat. Scrungly tween Akechi gets so much right, but his own bias about Adachi prevents him from a very early deduction. He’s gonna be so mad when the truth comes to light. But god, I am having the time of my life planning this fic. I’m near the end of April in the outline, and setting up for the next dungeon arc and things are gonna be derailed like whoa due to Kanji’s early involvement, more positive relationship with the Dojima fam by virtue of being the one to catch the signs of the shitty child abuse Akechi was going through and reporting it, and Kanji just knowing a lot about the TV world through secondhand accounts. He, Naoto, and Akechi are gonna do some fun stuff. I can’t wait to get to planning that... as well as Akechi prying into the life of a weird gas station attendant who only shows up on rainy days except the ONE TIME they shook Yu Narukami’s hand. Wtf is your deal, mystery gas station guy? Give him a handshake. >:( Do it. Let him prove that Yu Narukami isn’t special and that he needs to stop acting like he’s the only one qualified. Grr.

Akechi and Adachi are very funny characters to me because they're set up to be essentially like you, except instead of relying on and helping others they used their powers for themselves and were weaker for it.

But you know what? They were probably also weaker because they didn't get a goddamn velvet room. i'd be grumpy too if I went into the battle with my true rival and all I had was my fucking starting persona/s while he pulls out Surt, The Blazing Giant.

- I have found the True Killer At Last. was like “I’m not going to use a guide for everything” but I sure did use a guide for this. and I’m glad I did because no way would I have gotten through that Questions Gauntlet without it

- I forgot literally everything namatame did sorry dude. also a little disappointed we didn’t get to see nanako’s shadow though I get why she didn’t have one. want this little girl to be a little bit more upset about things she should be upset about sometimes

- ANYWAYS I maxed out every party member’s social link except for rise (and of course teddie but that doesn’t count). I want to max out rise as soon as possible since she’s also probably got the best navigator skills, but I still want to do a friendship only game and I don’t want to make her sad :( I will have to romance someone eventually on ng+ to get some Achievements, might pick rise so I don’t have to make her sad twice?

- turns out I was missing out on a lot of social links I forgot you have to like. talk to people. and stuff. so I’m probably going to have to do a ng+ to figure out what those people are up to. plus I missed out on a lot just not taking jobs? I took on the hospital janitor job just to get courage up (to talk to naoto) and was NOT fond about how that particular social link started.

- so it’s funny the only other social link I maxed outside party members (and the dojimas and marie) was uhhh kou ichijo who I spent time with because he shares a last name with kay. so then when they had the “remember all your friends!” it was like one guy. which was kinda funny

- also managed to max all stats which is nice

- still was only at like rank 2 at adachi because he said something that made me go :/ and then he was so low on my priority list after that I completely missed out on the rest of his social link. so that’s also a thing I want to do in a ng+ since he’s uh. a significant character.

- looked up the bad endings and accomplice ending is FUN even though I still don’t give a shit about adachi yet. because like I forgot what his whole deal was except it had something to do with being a misogynist? I know people compare him to akechi who I really like but I’m not feeling anything for him yet. like I said I don’t remember a lot of the details of this part of the game so if there was something cool I forgot. well.

- as for characters I DO like: naoto my best friend naoto!! I’m not inherently against “woman feels the need to present as male because of some societal pressures but then grows to accept femininity” or whatever, like I’ve been there, but something about the way they go about this just leaves a sour taste in my mouth? like going “I wish I was born male :( well nothing I can do about it guess I’ll have to learn to accept being a woman” isn’t really. encouraging? kind of like with kanji’s “guys can have “feminine” traits without being gay” like. that’s true! but also! in the way you’ve presented this story I think he’s just gay! 

- think it would be extremely funny if naoto goes like “that’s it... I’ll have to accept being a woman. I’ll have to learn to work through my internalized misogyny and assert myself as a successful female detective” and does that and then five years later is like “wait. I might actually be trans.”

- while we’re on this depressing note, absolutely everything with the school festival beauty pageants was horrific to sit through. aside from the sheer relief I felt when naoto just refused to participate in the swimsuit part

- I did max out dojima and nanako social links just before nanako got kidnapped so it was hard to watch. dojima finally won me over and was a decent father and then all this happens. which I think is how we’re supposed to play the game anyway

- ??? idk what else. maybe I will be able to finish this game soon and maybe p5r will come in some day. what even IS in the winter months I don’t remember a single thing about marie

Heaven’s Crimson Assistant follows Akiren throughout the events of Persona 5 but something is off because as soon as A teammate gains their Persona they get killed off instantly but still appears in the cutscenes except with their eyes and mouth blurred out by a red and yellow halo, this continues until Akechi confronts Akiren and the phantom thieves as he looks unnerved seeing Red and yellow halos over the other teammates Eyes and mouthes, once in Sae’s palace Akechi and Akiren have a duel because Akechi knows this isn’t the Akiren he loves, But Akiren reveals himself to be a being created by Yaldy to help carry out his mission to reform the entire world, his true form is him with white hair streaks in his black hair golden glasses with red dots on the lenses wearing a white tuxedo with coattails and a red tie and a black and white mask disembodied golden wings with red highlights hovering over his back area along with his signature weapon a futuristic heavenly Gun, he then summons his persona Orwell which looks like Arsene but more heavenly and chained by shackles, Orwell’s signature attack: Deadly Sin: Despond kills Akechi as he lays in Sae’s palace bleeding out as he sees the other phantom thieves with red halos on their faces and mouths being controlled like zombies as they feast upon Akechi’s corpse.

To be honest. I have tried to read your AU college but I don't really understand it. And I wanted to know if you could explain it to me please.

Heck yeah I can try! I’m assuming you mean the council because I’ve only done one college shuake pic (but I might do more in the future who knows :3)

Ok so the Student Council AU! It’s built off of my Uncle Adachi AU, which is where Adachi is Akechi’s uncle who adopted him when Akechi’s mother (Adachi’s older sister) died.

In the normal Uncle Adachi AU, Akechi is taken in by Naoto after Adachi is arrested so that Akechi can be trained as the Second Coming of the Prince Detective. Eventually, he falls into the hands of Shido, and Persona 5 continues as usual. (I’m a sucker for trying to keep things as canon as possible haha)

The Student Council AU is the Uncle Adachi AU, except that it takes place in a timeline where Adachi is never arrested. This AU specifically takes place in the Accomplice route from Persona 4 Golden, where the Protagonist burns the evidence that would convict Adachi.

Because Adachi is never arrested, Akechi goes to Yasogami High. He grows up completely different. He’s a lot more self-centered and spoiled. But, due to the trauma with his mom’s death, he still has a strong desire to be liked and to be wanted, and he believes becoming Student Council President will accomplish this.

That’s the simplest way I think I can explain things without going really in-depth on some story elements I haven’t revealed yet! I really hope this helps!! And thank you so much for reading 💕‼️

allegedly when Akechi was following the Thieves around, he ran into Black Mask, who shot at him, and the confrontation awakened Akechi to his persona.

Did I not say that we wouldn't see his awakening? Because he's deffo had his persona for longer than a month.

All of Akechi's testimony is contrived as fuck and has nothing to back it up, but because the Thieves are panicking (and are kinda dumb) they don't question any of it. Instead, Akechi just lays out his ultimatum: either they help him uncover the true identity of the "real" killer, or he turns them over to the police.

i wanna crack open his skull and read it like tasseomancy, what the fuck is even going through his head, what is his morality, what are his goals. I have no fucking idea.

I KNOW HE'S THE KILLER. Like, the thing about Persona games (or at least 4 and 5) is that you reach a point in the story where the story narrows things down until there is only one option left. As with Adachi, Akechi has been suspect for a long fucking time, but eventually the branches of the story get trimmed until there is only one option remaining. And it is Akechi.

.... Hm. And like with Adachi, I have no idea what his motivations are. Funny, that.

hang on, after the meeting, everyone leaves except Reverie and Morgana, and things go hazy and weird for a sec before the scene abruptly ends. And Morgana's little icon there is the "talking" icon, not the "surprise" or "confusion" icon.

What is happening? Is something important occurring that the story is obfuscating or is Reverie-In-The-Framing-Device getting woozy?

The School Festival is over, Akechi bails on the rest of the interview without answering who the Thieves are.

There's an extended animated cutscene where Kasumi dances at the post-festival dance? But uh. I don't.... care. Sorry, Kasumi, you are suffering from how tacked on you feel to the story.

The Thieves meet up the next day to go over everything they know before giving Akechi an answer. Makoto lays out that all of this, the hacking, the manipulation of the media, the way Okumura was placed in their path, the hype cycle around the Thieves, it was all a huge set-up and set-ups like that take money and resources to happen. Ergo, the person they're up against is no Republic serial villain, they're either an extremely powerful individual or a whole organization.

Also there is a 30 million yen reward for details about them now.

It's deeply satisfying to see the rubber band finally snap back as the weight of his actions falls on him. Yeah, he's like 16, 17, but he's been toying with people's hearts and minds like it's a game to win. It's turned him into a kinda terrible dude, so the clarity hitting him this hard is actually reassuring. Somewhere in that brain, he knows the gravity of this fuck up, he knows he's gone astray. Not even led astray, he was hyped for fame all the way back before Madarame. First a desire for recognition, sure, but it grew into a ravenous monster appetite for infamy and all the perks that come with it.

I'm just relieved that the fucking hours upon hours of dealing with his horseshit was actually building to something. That doesn't make me like him, but it makes me feel satisfied that all of that was intentional.

Because of reasons, here is a list of all the Persona playable characters that are adults, in canon, and who have an official adult design (as of March 2022).

P2 Inocent Sin: Tatsuya is 18, Maya is 23, Yukino and all the returning characters from the first game are 20-21. I added this image because the most popular wikis say they’re 20 but the game says 21.

P2 Eternal Punishment: literally all the party members are over 21, except Tatsuya who’s still 18.

P3: Mitsuru, Akihiko and Shinjiro turn 18 mid-game. They’re already 18 at the start of P3 The Answer.

P4 Arena: Mitsuru and Akihiko are 20-21 now; Yukari, Junpei and Fuuka are 19-20. Adachi is 28-29.

P4Golden:  Yosuke and Chie are already 18 when Yu returns at the end. Yu himself is possibly 18 because we don’t know on what month he was born, only the year.

P5: Akechi, Makoto and Haru turn 18 mid-game. Rise has a cameo and is now 21-22.

P5 Strikers: starts the summer after the events of P5. Makoto is 19, Haru is still 18 until December. Ryuji is 18 now, and possibly Joker too (we don’t know on what month he was born) Zenkichi is a dad lmao.

Almost all Persona-users except a couple of the Phantom Thieves are canonically over 18 by the time of Persona 5 but some are only ever mentioned in text, we don’t get to SEE them so I didn’t include those. I wonder when Atlus will have some of the Shadow Operatives return for another spin-off lol... I hope Mitsuru and Akihiko are still h0t as f0ck BYE.

okay but you got me thinkiing about akechi was suppose to be the hero/protag

my main reasoning is like joker is our trickster archetype which typically more likely then not take the villain role

(even going back to p4 adachi the jester arcana)

ok you just unlocked a topic i am incapable of being normal about so sorry in advance for possible unhingedness (<-has a whole video essay planned about characters who are/think they are/want to be heroes but can’t do it in the story they’re forced to be a part of)

akechi’s prince persona is all about being a hero, robin hood is even designed to look like a common old school superhero, his whole theming being around heroes, whatever the fuck is happening in proof of justice certainly serves to hammer this point home: goro’s rebellion is about being a hero of justice

but that’s what it is, unfortunately - rebellion. he knows the cards he’s been dealt won’t allow him to be one, so at least in a place like the metaverse he’s allowed to live that dream his mother gave him. he has to go against society and its expectations of him in order to do it. (i’d say shido’s work requiring him to use mostly loki is another way for shido to kill remnants of akechi’s mother inside him if you wanna get very metaphorical with it)

but if we go to the meaning of protagonist, then i do firmly believe goro’s a wildcard (i mean that part’s p much confirmed in the game) and my personal hc is he was supposed to have a velvet room but yaldy prevented him from entering it, tho that part’s not backed up by anything just smth i like to think about hehe

there’s even the line in his theme song, no more what ifs, “my story will be starring me just like yours” - he is still, at the end of the day, the hero of his own story, just like his inner, younger rebellion wishes for

i think that while goro wishes to be a hero - or at least, his younger self wished for, i think at this point he knows it’s unrealistic - in a story with him as the protagonist he’d be forced to be an anti hero if anything. there’s no version of his story where the audience will see his actions and say “yeah this is heroic, selfless and just” no matter how they’ll be framed. even on a meta-textual level goro can never get what he wants 😔

but this is why i think we can’t judge him through heroic terms or standards. i also won’t call overconfidence his weakness bc i think his confidence is at least 85% fake and more of a survival thing at this point of his life lol (if he’s not confident in his plan, he virtually has nothing else to live for)

BUT TO GO BACK TO AN EARLIER TOPIC THAT I GOT OFF OF, SORRY ABOUT THAT, i want to see him go through the fool’s journey so bad. he may not be a clear slate but like,, neither are most persona protags honestly (most prominent example imo are the p3 protags). you can also read his emptiness - the sin of his scrapped palace, but also how he’s always putting on masks and there’s not much behind them anymore - as the blank slate of him being the fool. either way i think he deserves to go through this journey, i think it can be really interesting to see too

like. the game really insists that he and joker are the same except that joker has bonds and goro doesn’t, so i really want to know what goro with bonds would be like; would he be more of a classic hero? would he use robin hood more than loki (or throw them both away altogether, if we assume he has a velvet room)? would he be someone else altogether, removing his masks, at least for a bit?
