Horizon to Horizon AU Masterpost!

(And some Saints of Eyes and Ears AU too!)

*this is a work in progress, updates will occur sporadically as I find motivation in drawers and under my bed*

A guide to my fantasy worldbuilding alternate universe built around the Hermitcraft, Empires, Evolution, and Life Series SMPs.

Questions are always welcome, and my ask box is open!

The elevator pitch:

The sun rises, and the moon rises, and the sun sets, and the moon sets, all between the Four Horizons of the world. One to each cardinal direction, and each with it’s own continent: Equinox to the North, Solstice to the south. Sunrise to the East, Sunset to the West. Civilizations rule the Land of the Sunrise, the Birthplace of Day and Night. Empires rule the Land of the Sunset, the Resting Place of Day and Night. Hermits and Emperors make peace and war, trade and explore, live and die and make merry in this First Dimension. The Second, the Nether Below, and the Third, the End Above, are lands of danger ripe for discovery. The lands to the north and south, however… who knows what’s over there, leagues past the vanishing point of plain sight?

What is the Horizon to Horizon AU?

The Horizon to Horizon AU, or more simply Horizons AU, is an alternate universe fusion containing the characters within the Hermitcraft SMP, Empires SMP, and Evolution, or Evo SMP. It is a high-to-mid fantasy setting, with some sci-fi elements when it comes to redstone.

Fics set in this au, in-universe chronological order:

- Among the mountains of everlong, a story about the Stronghold War (3,451 words, unfinished, on hiatus)

- Cracking like a dry branch in a westward wind, a story about newcomers and old debts (24,980 words, finished!)

- A kindling, of sorts, fluff and banter and all that jazz (3,423 words, unfinished)

- Legend has it that the moss grows on the north side of the trees, or, 2023 Hermittober Chapters, a story about crime and conspiracy (12,875 words, finished but I haven’t uploaded them all yet)

- Give me back my heart, you wingless thing, a story about prophecies and past tragedies (25,025 words, unfinished, a good ways along, currently working on this one)

- We’ll sing a song of days gone by, a story about the forgotten history that ties Horizons to the Saints of Eyes and Ears (unpublished, hammering it out in private at the moment)

Who’s who in this universe?

Between the Horizons, there are two major groups: the Hermits of the Sunrise, and the Emperors of the Sunset. This AU was made during Season 9 of Hermitcraft and Season 2 of Empires, and more specifically was born from a question that came into my mind during the crossover event: What would happen if the Hermits were tasked with ruling nations, like Emperors?

The emperors are pretty much doing the same thing they usually do: ruling empires. But the hermits are split into two main camps: those active in the crossover, who I arbitrarily chose to rule their own civilizations (as having a civilization for each hermit would be… some nonsense), and those not active in the crossover, who live among the civilizations, but do not rule. And what is the Saints of Eyes and Ears AU?

The Saints of Eyes and Ears AU is… sort of its own thing, and sort of a part of Horizons. It is a retelling of the events of the Life Series SMP through a semi-historical, semi-legendary lens as the cosmology/history of a religion known as Livolutionism. It is mostly based on the history-legends of Christianity, more specifically Catholicism, as that religion is the one I am most familiar with.

The elevator pitch:

In the time before time, when the world was small and the gods were close, an endless line of descendants of descendants lived and died under a sky full of eyes. Saints and sinners, lovers and enemies, bitter rivals and soulbound comrades have lived a thousand lives beneath the watchful gaze of the angels above, and demons below. But what an angel or devil is up to interpretation, as are their opaque intentions.

This will probably get its own post later down the line.

Okay, what are those legends?

The events of the various installments of the life series are collected into various books, which are self-contained tales that each follow a specific Saint, the winner of that particular installment, and the world and people that grow and flourish and crumble and die around them. The books and their Saints are as follows:

- The Book of Thirds, surrounding the life of the Saint Grian of the Desert Sun and the Red Winter War

- The Book of Lasts, surrounding the life of the Saint Scott of the Endless Stars and the Trickery of the Boogymen

- The Book of Doubles, surrounding the life of the Saint Pearl of the Shadowed Moon and the Bonds of the Soulmates

- The Book of Limits, surrounding the life of the Saint Martyn of the Stained Mars and the Chaos of the Clock

- The Book of Secrets, surrounding the life of the Saint Scar of the Blooming Earth and the Keeper’s Whispered Words

- The Real Book, a disputed scripture, surrounding the life of the Saint Cleo of the Fading Comet and the Repeating Lives

- The Book of Cards, surrounding the life of Saint Joel of the Turning Wheel and the Luck of the Draw

I FINALLY DREW CREATURE FEATURE STUFF LOL

It only took 14 years

Was super busy but since I'm on break I finally got the chance to draw some visuals for the Creature Feature AU!! Thank god!! If you allow me, let me explain my design choices!!

HERMIT!Grian vs EVO!Grian

1.) There's quite a few differences between Hermit!Grian and Evo!Grian. For starters, quite obviously, HC!Grian's big ol' bird wings. As previously stated, these are traits that he carries into Hermitcraft from his time as a Watcher, as alluded to by the purple feathers that grow on the tail end of his head wings. Since EVO!Grian has yet to be taken, he comes across as fully human! Additionally, Hermit!Grian has a series of markings under his right (viewer's left) eye that is a direct connection to his Watcher-status over the Life Series.

2.) Hermit!Grian's hair is noticeably darker and a lot fluffier, as opposed to the messy, almost pin straight blonde nature of EVO!Grian, whose rugged and disheveled nature reflects his mischievous behavior. Hermit!Grian also has more heart motifs in his bangs and his hair flyaway! Partially as a design homage to the Life Series. Since the Life Series hasn't yet happened for EVO!Grian, he doesn't have those elements.

3.) Hermit!Grian obviously has his signature red jumper, while EVO!Grian has his VERY bright, VERY eye-catching green hoodie. EVO!Grian almost always wears the hoodie with the hood up, which is really funny because Hermit!Grian will be caught DEAD before he's seen in a hoodie.

4.) The eyes. EVO!Grian has very blue, very unnerving eyes (on purpose!) with small pupils and a constant, crazed look in his eyes. Meanwhile, Hermit!Grian's eyes are pitch black and noticeably rectangular. Though he never talks about why this change occurred, it happened after the Watchers took him in. His time as a Watcher shattered his soul, slowly hollowing him out in a way that he's still learning to reverse. Eyes are windows to the soul, after all. This also explains why his mischief, though still present, grows more mild or dormant in Hermitcraft. Sometimes, if he pulls a prank that's too grand or has an emotional response that's too strong, a flicker of blue will flash in his eyes before fading away again. It should also be noted that Hermit!Grian's left (viewers right) iris is outlined with a purple color, which drips and melts inside his eyeball.

HERMIT!Pearl vs EVO!Pearl

1.) Both Pearls don a big, crescent shape birth mark over their left (the viewer's right) eye. They both also have a similar white to dark gray segmentation in their hair. That is, however, where many of their similarities stop. Hermit!Pearl has moth-like modifications, which she (unknowingly) gained during her time in the Life Series. Due to EVO!Pearl's existing prior to the Life Series, she is technically "human" (well, as human as a Watcher Spy can get).

That being said, since EVO!Pearl is made aware of her eventual participation in the Life Series, she is driven mad. She makes a makeshift headband with flimsy antennas attached to the top and something that looks similar to an elytra (which do not fly since they're very poorly made) to mimic the look and feel of the moth wings she will eventually gain. It was around this time that the village of EVO deemed her too far gone.

2.) Hermit!Pearl's hair is noticeably lighter and much more well kept, while EVO!Pearl's hair is shaggy, shortened, and much darker in comparison. It makes it easier for her to hide in the dark.

3.) Though Hermit!Pearl is depicted in the white button up of the main service uniform, her wardrobe is obviously much more diverse in comparison to EVO!Pearl, who wears a hoodie that is designed in the same style of EVO!Grian's, except just in a grayscale colorway and moons on the sleeves instead of hearts.

4.) Again: The eyes! Similar to Hermit!Grian, Hermit!Pearl's left eye (the viewer's right) has a hint of purple in it due to her status as a Watcher spy. Meanwhile, EVO!Pearl's eyes are nothing less of strange. Though not depicted, there are times where her eyes will switch to a purple colorway rather than the green one (specifically when she's actively communicating with the Watchers or tracking down Grian in EVO). Her eyes weren't always this way. They used to be light blue, like depicted on Hermit!Pearl, but after being driven into madness, EVO!Pearl dropped part of her "spy" cover and decided it was better to be feared than hidden.

Hopefully that all made sense LMAO! Now that they kinda have designs, I hope to be able to draw them more frequently!!

I’m really interested to hear how this whole lab thing even got started? How did the Watchers chose who to kidnap?

The first group of people the Watchers took were a group of nine people: Grian, Martyn, Netty, Jimmy, Bigb, Salem, Mini, Tom, and Zee. Most of these people didn't know each other very well before they were brought to the lab, with the exception of Martyn and Netty, who were engaged at the time (they later held a wedding ceremony in the lab, on the date they had already decided)

A little while later, the Watchers kidnapped another person, Taurtis, and then someone else many months after that, Pearl.

These eleven subjects were the only subjects for a while. This was before the Watchers decided on renting their subjects. They would just have them do challenges in the lab. Various things depending on the day, most of them sadistic experiments. They weren't concerned with damaging the subjects. If one of them got too hurt they would simply fix them with magic.

Of course, magic healing is expensive, and the Watchers would rather feed off of the struggle for recovery, so they only used it in extreme circumstances (like if a subject might die)

Most of those original subjects have disappeared. The subjects don't know where they went, and, after many months, started to assume they had died in one of the Watcher's experiments.

When the Watchers choose a new subject, they spend a long time gathering information on them beforehand. They like to pick people who know each other already, or people that know someone already in the lab. For example, the Watchers considered Lizzie purely because of Joel and Jimmy's relationship with her.

It's wonderful food for the Watchers, when they drop her off in the lobby and Joel sees her. They can taste the horror and dread radiating from him: Not her. Anyone but her. She doesn't deserve to go through this torment too.

Meanwhile, Lizzie is first relieved to see her missing husband and younger brother, but then reality sinks in: This is how you've been living? This is how they treat you? I can't believe you've been fighting for your sanity in here, while I've been free

And then the rest of the situation is realized too: This is how I will live. This is how they will treat me. Forever. I can't get out anymore than he can.

If they're picking someone new and unrelated to the other subjects, they pick quiet people. One's who won't be noticed if they just vanished one day.

Etho doubts anyone has noticed, even now.

Everyone on, or well, from Evo has feathers on their ears.

It's expected for Grian and Jimmy as bird Hybrids, Avians, but the others definitely get looks once people realize they all have them despite the lack of Avian traits, it's easy to realize it's a weird thing when they all have them despite all odds of genetics or luck.

Nobody will ever know the panic the members went through, both the ones the reconnected and the ones that scattered to the winds, when they first came in before they got Out. That the feathered ears (and for some, in other places too), actually predated Jimmy and Grian presenting as Avians so many years later.

That the others, before Grian knew they were alive, before they knew Grian was alive, held with bated breath until Pearl presented into a Moth hybrid of all things. So it wasn't a premonition of a change to come…. But then they didn't really know what it was then, other than a reminder, or maybe just a marker of what they all went through.

Later, when Grian is informed his players have been found and alive and there's tears and fights and screaming and hugs that bruise, they will notice the wings, and he will notice their lack of and the feathers that are still there, and they will talk, but nothing will come of it.

And if later, during SMP's and Life series, if someone questions their feathers, they will all exchange secretive, searching looks with each other before saying It's nothing important.

If you ask Grian he'll look off into the distance with a plastic smile and say it was a side effect of something from a while back, and will change the conversation, but if you're observant you will see the sliver of guilt that haunts him.

If you ask Jimmy he'll clam up and stutter but will just say he doesn't know, that he's an avian, but maybe it's a confidence of genetics, who knew really? Before distracting and distancing himself from the topic.

If you ask Pearl she'll stop and stare with suddenly cold eyes and say with a polite, smiling voice that's all teeth that says that's sort of rude, isn't it? Her tone will be harsh or teasing depending on who asks and how much she cares about them, but her eyes will still be cold, and her words pointed that she will not be answering.

If you ask Martyn, he'll freeze for just a second before his face darkens, even if his tone is light or aloof. He'll say that's a story for a different day (one that will never come) but say that there was an… incident awhile back, and it left its mark, and that's it really.

If you ask BigB, he'll spout something different every time. His face never wavers, his smile never dips, his tone light and teasing, his words are confusing and lead you in circles of the story, until later you realize nothing he said made much sense, and confused on how he seemed so truthful despite the fact he was obviously lying.

As for the other survivors of Evo, well, they disappeared into the winds the moment they got Out, and nobody makes connections with them because why would they? They have no clue they aren't just normal people who just happen to have feathers on their ears, with nobody to compare or connect to.

And the Truth? The Truth is something they will likely never tell, events and secrets kept close to their chest because they're trying to move on and the feathers, while a reminder, don't mean anything more than that to them. After all, they just grow back, so it's easier to just let the pain they cause fade.

After all, Evo left its mark in many more ways in one for the players trapped there for however long, and the feathers are honestly small potatoes compared to their other scars, both mental and physical.

Memory’s of the Moon

Pearl: one of the latest addition to Evo, yet also one of the last to leave.

Pearl is a Moon Goddess or more accurately she was, however when she was brought to Evo the Watchers suppressed the memory’s of her past life and trapped her in a mortal body to ensure she couldn’t appose them.

In the past her mortal form is a moth hybrid, however in the present her mortal form is an avian.

Due to her undiscovered divinity she has a Goddess form that is unaffected by time and space, meaning she can vaguely remember the previous timeline after every reset.

The more resets that happen the more vividly she remembers and the more she risks prematurely discovering her true form.

Her dynamics are mostly the same as they are in the original timeline, when it comes to Mumbo however he knows he has to be careful around her. He is her friend In the future, but he can’t act like it too soon so he wont raise suspicion during the timelines where he try’s to hide the fact he’s from the future.

The main difference come in later timelines, when she starts to remember more clearly things that never happened. Salem is usually the first person to catch onto the fact Mumbo is hiding something, but this just gives her more reason to suspect something is wrong.

So in later timelines Pearl, Big B and Salem form a secret alliance to try and figure out what’s going on.

Gods and Goddess:

In this AU Gods/Goddesses are less like how most major religions see them and more like the Deity’s from Egyptian mythology or even Norse mythology. They aren’t all seeing all powerful entity’s, they are powerful of course but can still be killed/depowered, they are also less the rulers of a domain and more so the manifestation of their domain with their power and influence reflecting the state of their true selves (for example when the ocean dried up in empires, leading to Lizzie forgetting who she was)

Also in the past Pearls Goddess form is pale and blue to resemble a new moon, but when she rediscovered herself in the original timeline at the end of empires her Goddess form changed to resemble a harvest moon.

Also, also Salem is a Pegasus hybrid that idea was inspired by @fallow-foot Salem design go look at their art it’s great.

Sorry I just really love IT (Currently reading the book) and I enjoy the Life Series they are probably my top Hyperfixations currently

Like Pennywise/It would be the watchers and the Loser Club can be your choice.

For me, I'd do Eddie=Jimmy and Richie=Scott or Tango. (I'm sorry I love Jim /p I also enjoy solidaritek, Flower Husbands and Reddie.)

I can see Grian being Bill and Stan being Scar or vice versa (Stenbrough and Scarian ship)

But at the same time I could see an Evo SMP vibes, besides there wasn't really ships unless you played a little with the ships in IT
